Chapter 3
"I don't have time for this. I'm meeting Relena to go shopping. But, before I go let me tell you one thing, honey. If you continue down this path, you're going to lose Relena. She loves Heero and if it came down to choosing, I don't think you'd be the one she picked." said Noin, as she slammed out of the front door.
Milliardo watched from the window as his wife angrily marched over to her car without a second glance. They'd been fighting day and night ever since Relena revealed her pregnancy to them. He was doing what he thought was best for her. He'd failed to protect her before, but he wouldn't again.
******************
It took Noin least than a half hour to get to Relena's manor. After the Mariemaia coup, Milliardo and she had taken off for Mars. But wanting to keep in closer contact with Relena, they'd bought a second home on Earth. At first it had been hard for the Peacecraft siblings to get close like a family should be. Milliardo wasn't the warmest man you'd ever meet, but Relena had made the effort and they were now close. Noin was afraid this pregnancy had created a rift that might not be so easliy overcome.
After getting pass security clearance, Peygan was there to greet her on the steps of the mansion.
"Good morning, Mrs. Peacecraft. How are you today?" He bowed and gestured for her to enter. Ushering her down the hallway, they made small talk.
"I'm fine and you?" Noin said.
"I'm quite well."
"How is she today?"
"Hmm. You should see for yourself." Peygan said, as he took her into the study. Relena was positivly glowing in a baby blue dress that was loose enough to hide her growing waist line. She was sitting having a conversation with...
"Heero?!" Noin was blown away. There was Heero Yuy casually sitting on the couch in Relena's study. Milliardo had agents practically scouring the universe for him and the hunted prey was right under his nose.
Relena and Heero stopped talking when Noin came into the room. Relena could see the questions in Noins expression and quickly jumped from her seat to grab Noin's hand.
"Lu, Heero's staying here with me for a while. Please, don't tell my brother. He can't know Heero's here. It'll only enrage him more. Please?" Relena begged, squeezing Noins hands softly. She stood with her back to Heero, so only Noin could see the pleading look in her eyes.
"Relena, I know you've told us Heero isn't the father, but how can I believe that with him here. You said you've had no contact-" Noin questioned skeptically.
"Noin, Relena wasn't lying. I got into town last night and came straight here. I know about what's going on with Relena." Heero leaned forward, leaning on his elbows.
"So, you're not the father?" She gave him an intense, searching look.
"No." stated Heero, who got up from his seat to drag Relena back to the couch and made her sit down. He'd never dealt with a pregnant woman before, but he was sure she shouldn't be stressed.
"Damn. Well, even if you're not the father, Milliardo thinks you are. He's out to get you and he's dead serious, Heero." Noin continued to stand with her arms crossed, worry clearly on her face.
"Hm. I can take care of myself, Noin." Heero said, not in the least bit worried about Relena's stupid brother.
"I know it's wrong to keep this from Milliardo, but I promise not to say anything. This is afterall your life, Relena." Noin agreed.
"Thank you." Smiled a relieved Relena.
"Well, this is all a big surprise. I don't think I can take any more surprises. So honey, are you still up for some shopping?" Noin asked.
"Yes. Heero, you're more than welcome to...uh, right! We'll see you later then." Relena cut herself off when she realised who she was talking to. Heero shopping for baby clothes? It was laughable.
But not half as laughable as the expression on Heero's face when Relena kissed him on the lips as she said good-bye and left with Noin. Heero blinked for a second, then grunted. Peygan suddenly found a lot of lint on his uniform as he dusted at his suit. At least Peygan had the decency to pretend he wasn't grinning.
***************
"I'm telling you it's true. Vice Foreign Minister Darlin is pregnant! And one of those Gundam pilots did it." whispered a voice into a phone. The screen was cut off so not to allow the speakers identity to be know.
"If you can bring me proof, I'll pay you the money we talked about." said the reporter.
"Hell, I'll do better than that. I'll get a picture of her. She's cancelled all of her public appearances and meetings so the public hasn't seen her in months. She can't be that far along. Maybe a couple of months. Listen, she's going shopping with her sister-in-law today, so I'll go and get that photo. You just pay me my money!"
"Bring me the photo and I'll make you rich."
"Got it." And the line went dead.
"Vice Foreign Minister pregnant? That would be the scandel of the year. And would make this paper world famous if we break it first. Heh, heh." The reporter happily sighed. It would be an even bigger story if he took the pictures and cut out the annoying middle man.
********************
Heero patiently kept far enough back as not to raise her suspicions. He might not have cared to go shopping, but he'd still watch over Relena's safety. Not that he didn't trust Noin. He just wanted to be sure. Her personal body guards trailed behind the two women and he trailed behind them. He never knew one baby would need so much stuff. They'd been shopping for two hours and didn't seem to be slowing down anytime soon.
Relena handed another purchase to one of the bag ladden guards with a sheepish grin. Thankfully, the mall was almost completely deserted since a newer, larger mall had opened only a few blocks away, stealing most of the business from this one. Shopping was a guilty pleasure she never had the chance to do anymore with all her duties. Yet, shopping for the baby made it all seem more real. In a matter of months, she'd be a mommy. It was all so disconcerting.
FLASH! FLASH! FLASH!
Relena snapped out of her musing as an unknown person jumped into her path with a camera. They were dressed in a heavy jean jacket that was out of place for the summer season, and a baseball cape lowered down to hide the face. The camera's flash disoriented her as Noin jumped in between her and the camera man. Two of body guards moved to block the way from anymore pictures being taken of Relena. One started forward, reaching to wrench the camera away. The person with the camera turned and took off for the nearest exit. Smaller in stature than the gurads, they were able to get a huge head start and ran out of the shopping mall.
Finally after running for what seemed like forever, the person stopped and hid behind a van in the parking lot. Looking around to see if they'd been followed, the person gave a sigh of relief. Easy money!
"I'll take that."
In a blink of an eye the camera was wrenched away and smashed to the ground by Heero. Picking up the remains of the broken camera, he open it to be sure and exposed the film to light.
The person could only cower in fear. It was Heero Yuy! The only man the rest of the Preventers feared more than Wufei was him.
"You ever try that again and you'll be in the same condition as your camera." Heero glared coldly. As much as he wanted to stay behind and hurt the person, he had to go back and check on Relena. "I know you work for Une as her secretary."
"H-How did-" the person stammered in shock.
"I never forget a face, Ms. Mason. And don't bother coming into work tomorrow. You're as good as fired. Commander Une won't be pleased her secretary is using confidental information to try to hurt the VFM." And with that he walked away to check on Relena.
Taking off the cap, a swoop of long black hair comes down as the camera man is revealed to be a young woman. Former secretary to Commander Une. "No photo, means no money." she sighed. Maybe it was for the best. No one wanted a pissed Heero Yuy after them.
A little further away from from the scene, the reporter smirked. While that unknown man had chased after the gulliable fool, he'd been able to descretly capture some pics of his own while the VFM body guards and sister-in-law rushed her away. She did indeed look pregnant and he'd watched as she bought only items for an expectant mother. Yeah, he'd make a fortune when this broke.
*****************
"I'm fine. I was just a little frightened, but I'm fine now." Relena smiled, but it didn't quite reach her eyes. She looked tired and stressed.
After the stranger took off, Relena had been shaken up. She was now resting in the back room of the security station of the shopping center. Security guards and her own personal guards milled around in protection.
"Even so, I think it's time to go home. We bought enough already. The rest of the items we can get another time. We have months to get everything." Noin stated, nodding toward the many bags.
"I agree." a voice rang out behind them.
"Heero?" Relena looked past Noin to see Heero striding toward them. A small part of her wasn't even surprised. "Following me again."
"Hm. The camera was destroyed." He stated bluntly. "It's time for you to go home and rest."
Not taking no for an answer he went over to Relena and bent and picked her up.
"Heero! What the hell are you doing?" screeched Relena in surprise. It would have been kind of romantic if she wasn't pregnant and subconscious about her weight!
One of the mall guards seemed to take offense to this and stepped aggressively torward Heero, but one evil look from him was enough to make him hesitate. Heero glared at him and the older man backed off.
"Door!" snapped Heero, nodded his head to the entrance. The guard rushed to obey the command and opened it for Heero, who almost plowed the man aside in his haste to leave.
"Don't take offense. He's always like that." Noin said, patting the man on his shoulder, as she and their guards trailed behind the couple.
**********************
They argued all the way back to the mansion. Relena was a little angry at Heero's heavy handed tactics, but secretly pleased he cared so much. Just like at the mall, he swooped her up before she had even exited the car and without a word to anyone, took her inside and up to her bedroom. Slamming the door behind him, Noin waited for a bit for him to return. And waited. By then it became apparant, Heero wasn't coming back. She lifted her eyebrow at Peygan, who smiled in return.
***********************
Heero awoke with a start when Relena accidently smacked him in the face with her hand. She mumbled in her sleep and turned her back to him. He unconsciously smiled. He'd been staying/hiding out at her home for days now. And no one knew. Noin had kept her promise or else he was sure Zech's would have been over with a gun. He put his arm around her and held her close. They'd been sleeping together every night since he'd arrived, just not sleeping together. Not from lack of want either, but he knew she wasn't ready and he wanted it to be right between them. Their relationship was new and he didn't want to screw up again and hurt her. He enjoyed just being with her. Holding her now, he couldn't honestly remember how he had stayed away from her so long. His hand slipped to her rounded belly. She would be a mother in a matter of months. She'd bravely told him she'd raise it on her own and he didn't doubt she could, but she deserved better than that...she wouldn't go it alone.
The sound of soft knocking at her door quickly turned Heero's attention. Quietly easing out of the bed so as not to wake Relena up, Heero went to answer it.
"What's wrong Peygan?" Heero asked, opening the door wide enough to keep from showing Relena sleeping in bed. Exiting the room silently, he stood in the hall with the butler. Bare chested, only dressed in his standard spandex shorts, Heero leaned against Relena's door.
"I have some distressing news, Master Yuy. I wanted to give it to you first before Ms. Relena sees." Peygan whispered, thrusting a newspaper at Heero.
Taking the paper, Heero quickly scanned the headline. The only indictation of anger was the narrowing of his eyes.
KNOCKED UP: VICE FOREIGN MINISTER PREGNANT! WHO'S THE DADDY?
And under the tasteless headline was a picture of Relena taken from the side to show evidence she was clearly pregnant. It was from the day of the shopping trip. Damn! He's been tricked, giving another person opportunity to take Relena's photo. Reading through the story in disgust, the reporter goes on to say Relena was rumored to be pregnant by one of the ex-Gundam pilots. And that she'd slept with them all, so anyone could be the father. The story was a slanderous, untruthful account of orgies, drugs and partying on tax payer money.
Heero made sure to remember the name of the stories writer and photographer. He'd make sure to have a visit real soon. But right now, he had to break this to Relena. The shit was going to hit the fan and he had to be ready to take care of it.

Elsewhere...
"What the hell?" The headlines screamed for attention. Picking up the paper and reading through the contents left him angry and appalled. He threw the paper aside in disgust. It knocked over one of the many empty beer bottles scattered around the kitchen table.
"Bastards! How dare they treat her this way!"
It was his fault this happened. He had taken advantage of her and now she was paying for it. He was paying for by not being there for her like he so desperately wanted.
"She's carrying my child, but I'm too cowardly to do anything about it. I can't! Not with him back."
*Heero thinks he was so clever hiding out at Relena's place, but he isn't. I'd known he was there all this time. Winning her back after he hurt her for the hundredth time.*
"He doesn't deserve you, Relena. I do."
Okay! Glad that's done. All this angst has got me crazy. Yup, old daddy is feeling a little guilty and he should! But fear not, it'll get better for poor Relena. After all she does have her man. Right? See ya next time. ^^
