Chapter Ten: A long way from home

Heero pulled into the driveway of one of Quatre's mansions on L3. Quatre had quite a few here, Heero figured it was because Trowa prefered to come here on their off time if he knew they'd be gone in a few days anyways.

Heero didn't mind. It didn't really matter where he had to stay, it wasn't like he was into the whole 'big house' scene anyways. Though this house was noticable smaller than most of the houses Quatre had.

Heero grabbed the key Quatre had had someone deliver to him at the airport out of his pocket and slipped it into the doorknob and turned the handle. There wasn't a single sound from inside the house and Heero closed his eyes, wishing that there was.

You never realize how much you miss those little noises that Duo and Wufei make as they walk around until you don't have them anymore, Heero noted. He dropped his only bag next to the door and decided to do a quick survey of the house. Old war habits died hard.

Heero looked in the kitchen first and was pleased to find a note on the table that described the security system and how it worked and how to turn it on/off. Heero went to doing that right away and then, feeling more secure, went to the bathroom to take a quick shower.

When he got out with just a towel wrapped around his waist, he headed for the video-phone. He dailed his home phone number and it rang only once before Wufei appeared on the screen. "Heero?"

"Hai. Hello Wufei." Heero was standing up and realized that he was only in a towel.

"You had a shower." Wufei observed.

"Hai. I needed it." Heero looked around the room. "Well, I'm here and I'm fine."

"Right."

"I'll phone you when I'm ready to come home."

Wufei nodded. "I'll be awaiting your phone call.'

"Wufei?" Heero said as Wufei moved to turn off the phone.

"Yes?"

Heero closed his eyes and shook his head. "Nevermind."

"Goodbye."

"Bye."

Heero turned off the connection and then fell on the bed. Why had that been so hard? He had wanted to tell Wufei that he missed him already and that he wished that he was here. But something wouldn't let him. Something in the pit of his stomach said that it wasn't appropriate at the time.

So then when was it supposed to be appropriate?

Heero looked up at the ceiling and studied the bumps on it for a second and then sat up. Alright, why exactly was he here for?

Because you don't know what you should do about Duo, his conscious answered him.

Heero sighed. Right, Duo. What on earth was he going to do with Duo. Obviously Duo liked him more than Heero had known and now, with all these feelings surfacing that Heero didn't know before, it was confusing. He had gone out with people before but he had never actually had feelings for them at all. Sure, at the end of the night he usually had the feeling he never really wanted to repeat this situation with them again but Wufei and Duo were different.

Wufei was someone that Heero actually liked kissing. Someone that Heero actually missed when they were apart. Someone that Heero actually respected when it came to most things. Wufei was a person that Heero had found the urge to, at five o'clock in the morning, run into his room and make him come out and watch the sunset with him. That was something new for Heero.

Yet, Duo was someone that Heero actually liked spending time with. Someone that Heero wished he could protect from certain things even though he knew that Duo could do a good job protecting himself. Someone that Heero also respected in most things. Duo was a person that Heero found an urge to just sit with at odd times of the day, watching a movie or something and feel that he could let down his defenses and just be himself around Duo.

So which one of them was better for him?

Heero had heard about people that got together and it was really passionate and meaningful in the beginning, like his relationship with Wufei sort of, and then it got boring and stupid closer to the end. And there was always an end with those kind of relationships.

However, Heero was also aware that people who developed relationships out of friendships usually lost those friendships if it didn't work out the way that they wanted them too. What if that was going to happen to him and Duo? He didn't think he could live with the idea that if they broke up he wouldn't have anyone to do the things with that he did with Duo.

Heero got up and walked through the house and came to the living room and found a bunch of pictures arranged on the fireplace. There was one of just Quatre and Trowa, hugging as they looked down on a waterfall that they had found somewhere on one of their 'vacations'.

There was one of all five of the pilots when they were together for some sort of picnic thing that Quatre was throwing. One of the hired photographers had found a time when Duo and Heero were playing basketball against Wufei and Trowa and Quatre was standing on the sidelines jumping up and down in excitment and cheering both teams on.

If Heero remembered correctly, Duo and him had won.

The next one was one of Duo and Heero sleeping together in a bed while they were at one of Quatre's many mansions. That had been about three years ago when they were just getting used to not having to go to war ever again. It was different and Duo had had many nightmares, mostly about having to go back to L2 and be an orphan and all alone again. So Heero had constantly woken up in Duo's bed, after a night of comforting Duo and letting him know that he would never be alone.

Which was a promise Heero wanted to keep for a long time. And if having a relationship with Wufei was making Duo think that they were going to abandom him, then he needed to do something to convince him otherwise.

The next picture was one of Quatre and Trowa again, sharing a kiss on what Heero assumed was Valentine's Day judging by the amount of heart shaped balloons but then again it could also be an anniversairy or something. You never know with those two.

The last picture was of Wufei, Heero and Duo as they sat on the couch watching tv together. Wufei's head had been resting on Heero's shoulder, Heero's arm wrapped around Wufei and Duo's head had been laying in Heero's lap. Heero's other arm was holding Duo's braid and Heero remember idly playing with the braid for most of the movie.

Why couldn't they go back to that? The way all three of them had just been comfortable with each other. It had been a three-way relationship and none of them had been hurt at all.

Heero picked up the picture and sighed. If only things could be that simple again....

------------------------------------------------------------------------ --------

Duo took a deep breath and opened the door to the house and paused, not hearing anything and sighed out in relief. Obviously Heero wasn't waiting at the door to try and talk about what had happened earlier yesterday.

Duo kicked off his shoes and softly padded into the kitchen and found Wufei sitting in there, with a coffee staring out the window.

"He's gone." Wufei said, turning to Duo as Duo started to eliminate where in the house would be dangerous to go if he was trying to avoid Heero.

"What?" Duo said.

"He left for L3 yesterday. You can't run into him unless you have a way to get there." Wufei raised his mug to Duo in a mock toast and then turned back around to stare out the window. "So you can stop searching for him and just go and take a shower."

"What do you mean he left for L3?" Duo sat down in a chair. "He ran away to L3 because of what happened?"

"I guess so." Wufei said with a shrug. "He told me that you said something to him and it made him have to go and think."

"He had to go and think." Duo repeated dumbly and then stood up and punched his fist into the table. "DAMN!"

"What?" Wufei asked, his eyebrow raised. "It couldn't have been that bad."

Duo shook his head. "I'm going to go and take that shower."

"Clean towels are in the bathroom. Trying hanging them up this time." Wufei dismissed Duo with a wave of the hand.

Duo nodded and then ran up the stairs to the bathroom, closing the door and slided down to the ground. What in the hell? Heero never ran from anything, not once in his life had he ever done so. But now, because Duo had kissed him, Heero had chose to go off-planet to think about what he was going to do about it.

Duo's head fell into his hands and he slowly rocked himself back and forth. He knew that that stupid kiss was going to ruin everything. This was proof of it, Heero had gone to figure out what he could do without Duo being there to figure it out before Heero did and try to get Heero to change his mind.

He didn't want to lose Heero's friendship, he couldn't lose Heero's friendship. Heero was one of the only real friends Duo had and he didn't want to lose any of them. Not Quatre, Trowa, Wufei or even Hilde. He had been alone for so long and to have all these friends for once, that was great!

But he just had to go and screw things up.

"I always screw things up." Duo declared to the empty room. "Why do I always have to screw things up?"

No one answered him, not that Duo expected anyone to answer him and Duo got up. He turned on the shower stall and stripped quickly, stepping into the stall and going under the water's spray.

Duo reached behind him and idly unbraided his hair and let it flow out behind him. He sighed and grabbed the shampoo and began to wash his hair, figuring it would at least keep him busy for a while.

So he didn't have to think about the fact that he had ruined the best friendship that he had. With nothing more than a kiss.

------------------------------------------------------------------------ --------

Wufei sat in the kitchen and continued to stare out the window long after Duo left the room. Then he sighed and set his mug down and got up and went to the living room. Heero was gone because of that braided baka but Wufei couldn't bring himself to ask Duo what exactly they had been talking about that made Heero leave. Heero hadn't wanted to tell him so Wufei figured that it was none of his busiess

But then again, wasn't Heero is boyfriend so something that sent Heero away had to be his business, right? Wufei shook his head, no it was none of his business. If Heero wanted to tell him, then Heero would. If not, well then Wufei would just have to live with that. Heero wasn't going to do anything to hurt him.

Wufei looked over at the video-phone and wished that it would just ring. He wished that Heero would phone him.

Wufei shook his head at himself again. What on earth was going on? Why did he care so much what Heero was doing and wondering whether or not Heero was thinking about him. That had never happened before so why did it have to happen now? What gods had decided that he needed to be punished now?

Wufei listened as the shower droned on. Duo was probably washing his hair which meant that Wufei was going to be alone with his thoughts for a long time. If not all night because Duo hadn't acted like he wanted to talk to Wufei.

Another night of having to think about Heero.

Wufei thought that having Heero as his boyfriend now would have eliminated the nights where Wufei just lay in bed, staring up at the ceiling before he went to sleep, thinking about Heero and how he wished that Heero would extend his hand and welcome Wufei deeper into his life. And yet, he was still thinking like that.

It didn't seem like a lot had changed with Heero and in some ways that was a good thing but in others it wasn't as welcomed. Sure he was happy that Heero still treated Wufei as someone he respected and someone that he knew could take care of himself but at the same time, the lack of absolute adoration that his other relationships had had was missed.

Wufei paused and looked at the phone. He needed to tell Heero all of this and he would. When Heero wanted to come home, Wufei would pick Heero up from the airport and tell him all of this the way home. And then Wufei's wants would be sent to rest, or at least start to.

Wufei got up and went upstairs, passing Heero's door he paused and opened the door and pecked inside. He stepped inside and his eyes widened a little bit as he looked around.

Heero didn't seem like the kind of person that would have anything on his walls but obviously that had changed since the last time he had been in here. Heero had a bunch of pictures of Wufei on his wall. There was even one from the bar on their date. How Heero had gotten that was unknown but it was there.

It seemed Heero had more boyfriend quality that Wufei had given him credit for. Wufei looked on the bed and saw two notes on the bed and went over to them. One was addressed to Duo and the other to Wufei.

Wufei opened his own note and smiled as he read it. Heero had definitely more progress than Wufei had given him credit for.

{A/N: We are NOT killing anyone...not Heero nor Duo (this is because my reviewers were suggesting we murder Heero and/or Duo) ..but that's going to happen, though I pleasantly note that you guys decided not to kill Wufei ^^ which is a bonus
