Chapter Sixteen: Injured Heero
"What in the hell is wrong with them?" Heero asked, banging his hand harshly down on the kitchen table. "Wufei has no right telling Duo that he has to leave." Heero growled and sat down on a chair backwards, his head resting on the back of it. "What am I supposed to do with the two of them? I can't tell one of them to move out otherwise the other one will hold it over the other's head and I really don't want anyone to move out anyways."
"Listen Heero-" Quatre said with a sigh. "You're going to have to side with someone whether you like it or not. And right now you need to pick someone to side with because if you don't Duo will move out anyways because he'll think that you want him to! You're going to have to tell him that you don't want him to move out if you don't or just leave it if you do."
"I wil tell him that I don't want him to move outl." Heero answered simply. "I already knew that! I'm not going to make him move out. No matter how difficult he is being right now, I don't plan on making him move out. He's my best friend and who knows what would happen if he had to move out." Heero sighed. "He may sink into a depression and commit suicide or something." Heero buried his face in his arms. "I refuse to be the one that caused something like that."
"I don't think that Duo would go that far but you're probably right with the depression." Quatre commented. "So, when are you going to tell Duo that you're not going to make him move out?"
"As soon as I figure out what I'm going to do after that." Heero replied.
"Well then, I'll tell you." Quatre tapped Heero on the head, which made Heero look up at him. "You're going to go upstairs, talk to Duo and then go to bed. You need your rest. You've been pacing this kitchen for the past four hours trying to figure out what to do with Duo and Wufei and it's not working because you're overly stressed about this situation at the moment. You need a good night's sleep and to remove yourself from the situation for a while and then you can figure out where to go from there." Quatre smiled warmly. "You can't fix everyrhing in one sitting."
Heero nodded and stood up, then he flashed a sad look at Quatre. "It's just stupid that they both think that only they can have me!" Heero slammed his hand down on the table. "I haven't had any problems spending time with both of them before so why do they have to think that it will completely change now?"
"Maybe, and this is just a suggestion, Wufei thinks you'll find something in Duo that you can't find in Wufei. Duo is more girlish in a way, for example and maybe Wufei thinks that you might find more suitable for you." Quatre offered, massaging his temples. "After all, Duo does act more like the person someone like you would like rather than Wufei."
"That's stupid!" Heero exclaimed.
"It was just a suggestion." Trowa reminded Heero. "Besides no one ever said that you have to be smart to be jealous."
Heero shrugged. "I guess you're right." Heero sighed and got up. "I'm going to go and talk to Duo."
"Alright. We'll be down here if you need us." Quatre assured Heero and turned to Trowa and began to talk about what they should do about their next vacation break.
Heero took a deep breath and then headed on upstairs. He wondered if Wufei would get upset if he went to talk to Duo first instead of trying to go and see what happened from Wufei's point of view. Heero almost turned to Wufei's door and then shook his head. No! No matter what happened it couldn't have been that bad otherwise Heero would have been able to hear the whole conversation. Besides, Duo was the one hurting the most right now, so Duo was the one that needed Heero the most.
Heero knocked on Duo's door, waiting for a response. Nothing happened so Heero sighed and turned the knob, surprised to find that it was opened and Heero walked ih the room, looking around for Duo. He found him next to his closet, stuffing clothes in a random suitcases.
"You're here to tell me that you've decided that Wufei was right, aren't you?" Duo asked without even turning around. "Well don't worry about it, I'm already packing so you can just leave. After I get a good night's sleep I'll be out of your hair."
Heero didn't reply, not really knowing that to say. Finally he crossed the room and picked up the clothes that Duo had just thrown in a suitcase and hung them back up. "Unless you're going on a mission soon, you have no reason to be packing anything."
"Huh?" Duo asked, looking up at Heero with a dumb look on his face.
"Duo no Baka!" Heero plunked down next to him on the ground, moving close so that their legs were touching. "I'm not kicking you out of the house. Quatre and Trowa aren't kicking you out of the house. If Wufei wants you out of the house, that's his problem, not yours! You don't have to leave just because you and Wufei are having problems right now. I'm sure you'll work through them and if you don't, then we'll think about spliting up." Heero said. Duo sniffled at that and turned away. "And if someone has to move, it will be Wufei and me, not you. You can stay here as long as you want."
"It's not the house I'm afraid of losing." Duo muttered.
"Yeah I know." Heero said, shifting so that his legs went around Duo and then he pulled Duo in for a hug. "It's me that you don't want to lose and as long as you trust me, you won't. I'm not going to leave. You were my first friend Duo. You pulled me out of wherever Prof. J had put me and taught me how to find out who I was. I'm not going to leave you just because I have a boyfriened." (1)
Duo shifted closer, burying his face in Heero's shirt. "I know that, really I do. It's just hard to remember it sometimes."
Heero sighed and grabbed the end of Duo's braid and fiddled with it for a second while he thought before releasing it. "I know that it's hard for you and that Wufei isn't making it any easier but you have to just learn to deal with it. You guys were always bickering right after the war, but then you got over that so this can't be much different. I think that you just both need some time to get used to it. We've only been going out for a month or so now and two weeks of that I spent on L3."
"Yeah." Duo said, a small smile in his voice. "You promise you won't just leave me one day because Wufei decided that you two should go and live closer to his ancestors?"
"Promise."
Duo sniffled and then pulled away from Heero and looked up at him. "I'm going to hold you to that. I try to be nice to Wufei."
"I know."
"Wufei's going to be mad if you don't go talk to him." Duo said softly, pulling away from Heero.
"Yeah." Heero stood up and brushed the back of his pants off. "So you're going to put this stuff all back in the closet, right?"
Duo nodded.
"Good. I'll see you in the morning then."
Duo nodded again.
Heero sighed and then started out of the room. He looked over his shoulder and smiled reassuringly, he hoped, at Duo and then left. Heero closed the door and gently fell against it, he never knew that making someone feel better could be so manatory. Duo hd been prepared to leave because Heero hadn't already been up to tell him that he didn't have to leave. As if by Heero's inability to deal with it, Duo had reasoned that there was no hope for himself.
Heero sighed and crossed the hall to Wufiei's room. He knocked, got no response and rolled his eyes. "Wufei? Are you in there?"
"Yes." Came the short response.
Heero entered the room and went straight for the bed where, as he predicted, Wufei was sitting reading a book.
"Duo's not leaving." Wufei stated firmly.
"No." Heero agreed as he sat down on the bed and crawled up to the top so that he was sitting next to Wufei. "I'm not going to lose my best friend because of my boyfriend or my boyfriend because of my best friend. I shouldn't have to get stuck choosing between you two. Otherwise you both will end up with the short end of the stick because I'll end up having to get rid of you both and there's notthing less I want than that."
"Hmph."
Heero sighed, realizing he wasn't going to get anything more out of Wufei. Quatre had been right, there was no way he was going to fix everything at once. "Fine. I'm going to head to bed, I'll see you in the morning."
No response. Heero wondered if Wufei was going to be like that for a while.
"Duo and I have to accompany to the dog training facility." Wufei told Heero as Heero was about to walk out the door. "So we will all leave together tomorrow instead of you just leaving us before we wake up."
"Acknowledged." Heero replied and then walked to his room.
After this, he needed as much sleep as possible. If Quatre was right, than maybe that would help him start to figure out what he should do about his friends.
-----lalalala-----lalalala-----lalalala-----lalalala-----lalalala-----la lalala-----lalalala-----lalalala-----lalalala-----lalalala-----lalalala---- -lalalala
Heero growled. This was not fun at all. He had woken up at six o'clock in the morning, ready to go to the training site and figured by the politeness that they were showing each other, that there wasn't going to be any bickering, or at least not much, this morning.
Heero had been proved wrong one hour, fifty-three minutes and twenty seconds ago and hadn't been proved otherwise since.
"For pete's sake! Would you stop it! You're confusing the dog! When you do that the dog doesn't know it should attack me or if it should just yawn and lay down to sleep. You tell it green and yet you're yelling. It doesn't work like that!" Wufei snapped at Duo for the fourth time in a row, in the past two minutes. "You're ruining Heero's training."
Heero rolled his eyes. At this rate, it wouldn't matter who trained the dogs, they would ruin anyone's training with their yelling. Nothing could concentrate with someone screaming next to him. Not even dogs trained to work in high danger situations. Especially when the someone hasn't stopped snapping and picking fights for the past two hours.
"Oh yeah? And you're doing so much better? You're yellng at me more than I'm yelling at you!" Duo exclaimed angrily.
"At least I haven't told my dog that you're green."
"Well you should judging by the fact that I'm your PARTNER!" Duo growled.
Heero sighed and sat down on the ground. Instantly the two dogs headed over to him and stared at him questionly. He was sure they were trying to ask him what they were supposed to do about their argueing masters.
"Don't ask me." Heero muttered to the dogs as he stared at his watch. "I don't know how to deal with them myself."
The dogs whimpered and layed down next to him. They had already established that Heero was the one they should listen to instead of their real partners. Heero was sure it had something to do with the fact that he was the only one not yelling yet, not to mention that they had seen him first.
"Alright guys." Heero got up again and spoke loudly to get their attention. "Lets go for a run. There are a bunch of targets in the woods. I've trained the dogs so that they should know what to do without too much command but you do need to tell them who to attack. Old ladies are not good targets, guys." Heero joked around and then stopped when he realized that his audience wasn't paying much attention to him anyway, too busy glaring at the other. Heero figured they'd make this a competition but at least that would give the dogs something to do. Plus he always wanted to know how fast the dogs could work.
Wufei and Duo nodded in agreement, still glaring at each other, and Heero rolled his eyes.
"On your mark, get set, go!" Heero yelled and watched as the two pilots raced off into the woods, their dogs following close behind. Heero rolled his eyes and raced after them. Since he wasn't on an andrenaline rush, Heero realized that it was probably going to take him longer to get to each target but he didn't mind. Besides, he was supposed to be marking how well each dog did with its owner, not playing referee.
Heero watched Duo and Wufei slid behind each tree in pure stealth mode and rolled his eyes. They didn't have guns and they were supposed to be attacking cardboard boxes so why they were doing that, Heero wasn't sure but if it kept them slower than it was all good. Not to mention at least Heero would be able to check how well his training was holding up.
Suddenly Heero felt something catch his foot and before he could do anything about it, he was falling forward and pain shot up through his leg. Duo and Wufei heard him fall and turned around to find him on his knees with one leg stretched behind him.
"Heero!" Duo yelled as he rushed back towards him. Wufei followed on his heels, the dogs racing past them. "Are you okay?"
"I think I twisted my ankle." Heero muttered as he rolled over so that he was sitting on his butt and examined his foot.
"I can't believe you, the perfect solider, actually twisted his ankle because you weren't watching where you were going." Duo said between laughs as he looked down at Heero. "I mean, the root was in the middle of the path. It wasn't even hidden or anything."
"Duo-" Heero growled.
"What?" Duo asked, leaning closer to Heero. "Want me to kiss it better?"
Wufei tensed at that and he looked like he was about to hit Duo for the comment. Heero merely rolled his eyes.
"Duo, shut up!" With that Heero hoisted himself up by grabbing onto Duo's shoulder and started to try to hobble back to the main building. "And if you two hadn't been fighitng I wouldn't have had to watch you so closely and not pay attention to where I was going."
Duo and Wufei hung their heads in shame but Heero didn't apologize and just kept going. This was getting to be too much and with a twisted ankle, it wasn't getting any easier. Then he turned around and sighed, as they both continued to hang their heads, not looking up or moving to following him.
"Would you two hurry up, I'm not going to wait all day." Heero called back, realizing they were both going to hang back there for the next five minutes if he didn't say something and then they would launch into their speech of 'it's your fault'.
Duo looked up and beamed, rushing after Heero like a rewarded puppy. Wufei on the other hand just continued to look at the ground while he slowly made his way up the path to where Heero was waiting.
Heero shook his head and returned to his struggle up the path. Duo reached for him, probably to let Heero use him as a crutch but Heero just slapped his hand away. "I can walk by myself. It really doesn't hurt all that much." Heero gritted his teeth from wincing as his foot actually touched the ground and slight weight shifted on it. "Just follow me so that if I end up falling again I have someone to make sure I get help."
Duo nodded and walked beside Heero. Heero could tell though, that Duo's hand were reflex ready to catch Heero incase he fell. Heero closed his eyes in relief but kept walking anyways. At least he knew if he fell someone would be there to catch him.
Heero made it back to the main building in one piece and this time didn't complain when Duo moved to help him through the crowded hallways. Wufei walked ahead of them, making sure that as many people as possible got out of the way.
They reached Sally's office in record time, with the state of Heero's foot, and got Heero seated on a couch while Duo went up to the receptionist in charge of schedulizing appointments (2). Wufei sat down next to Heero and grabbed his hand hesitantively. Heero squeezed it back reassuringly and watched as Duo animately talked to the receptionist.
"Alright Heero, you can go and talk to Sally now. She doesn't have any appointments for the next ten minutes so you can get in right now." Duo said as he walked back over to Heero.
Heero nodded and let Duo help him up and then headed into the office.
"What's up Heero?" Sally asked as she watched him come in the room and then frowned. "What did you do to your foot?"
"I tripped in a hole." Heero answered simply.
Sally looked at him for a second to detrimine whether or not he was telling the truth and then shrugged and began to examine the injury. After a couple of minor exams and a few winces from Heero she nodded. She headed over to the phone, made a quick phone call which she whispered into to keep Heero from overhearing. Then she grabbed her kit and began to tightly wrap Heero's foot.
"You're going to have to keep off of this foot as much as you can for a couple of days, just to make sure that it heals properly. You probably won't have much of a problem though, judging by the fact that Wufei and Duo have nothing they need to be here for, for that time. They can do all of their work from home until you're better and then we have a mission for them." Sally said as she patted Heero's knee. "Why they didn't carry you in here so that you didn't have to walk on it the whole way here I will never know but maybe it was because you were being too stubborn." She gave Heero an evil look that reminded him of how mothers looked at their children when they caught them doing something bad.
"Hn." Heero snorted. Actually it had been because he hadn't wanted to hear them bicker about which one was doing more of the work or whether or not they were moving too fast or something equally stupid. And to think that Une and Sally had actually arranged for them to be with him twenty-four hours a day until he was healed enough to run away from them was irrational, undeserved, complete and total torture with a capital T.
"What's wrong?" Sally asked as she looked over at Heero as he hoisted himself up on his one foot and grabbed the crutches.
"Nothing." Heero snapped and then sighed. "It's not you. It's just Duo and Wufei. Their argueing is troublesome."
"Hm." Sally said and then put down her clipboard. "You know what I think?"
"What?"
"You need to remove yourself from the situation. If they were alone and you were not there to bother them, they may not fight. Prehaps you should try to sleep more during the day, see if it improves your housemates' relationship. If not, then maybe you should consider dumping Wufei and avoiding Duo. It is not healthy emotionally to be in a relationship that causes you more stress than happiness."
"Hn." Heero nodded his head. "Yeah, I guess you're right. That doesn't make it easy though."
"Never said it would." Sally pointed out.
"So I've noticed." Heero mumbled.
"Mhm."
Heero looked at Sally for a second and then decided that he might as well ask her his question. "Why do people search their whole lives for a relationship if half the time it ends up on bad terms?" Heero shook his head. "I just don't get it."
"Prehaps because no one wants to die alone." Sally suggested simply and then waved him out. "Come on, shoo, I have other patients that don't heal in a day."
Heero rolled his eyes. "I don't heal that quickly anymore." But Heero still made his way out of the doctor's room.
Wufei and Duo were sitting in the waiting room and, with the way they were 'reading their magazines', Heero was sure they had been told to stop argueing by someone and were now pouting by the fact that this person did not side with either of them.
"Lets go." Heero said, tapping Wufei's foot with one crutch. "I can't drive so one of you will have to drive my car home."
"Alright, I'll drive you." Duo said, jumping up. "After all, Wufei has the keys to the other car and I don't think that he wants me to drive that car anymore, after all, he might have to drive a car that has been touched by Shinigami."
"You can drive it." Wufei said without a second thought. "I should probably drive with Heero, judging by the fact that I actually have a first-aid certificate, unlike some people."
Oh great, Heero thought. Here we go again.
"Well I did more of the bandaging during the war anyways. So I don't really need the first-aid certificate, don't you think?" Duo retorted, seething at Wufei's comment.
"Yes well why do you think we have more scars than necessary?" Wufei snapped. "Besides Trowa happened to handle most of our injuries."
"You have more scars because you were in more danger than necessary." Duo growled.
"Rock, paper, scissors it!" Heero interjected, wanting to get out of the hospital wing as soon as possible.
Duo and Wufei looked at him with a weird look and then held out their fists in a non-violent form of combat.
"Ready?" Heero asked.
The two ex-pilots nodded.
"Rock, papers, scissors!" Heero called and the two of them 'attacked'. Wufei had scissors and Duo had rock. Therefore Duo won.
"Yeah!" Duo shouted, doing a little dance. "I won against the all-mighty dragon!"
"Great!" Heero snapped, and then booked it out of there faster than most people could after just getting the crutches. "I want to go home so if you don't hurry up, you'll be going with Wufei and I'll get someone else to drive me home. Or-" He turned around and shot Duo a look. "I'll just call Trowa to pick me up."
Duo raced after Heero, leaving Wufei alone to debate why on earth Duo was driving Heero home and not him.
"Hey Heero, come on, you can't just walk away like that." Duo said, throwing an arm around Heero's neck. "That's just rude!"
"And you two fighting is just so polite." Heero snapped, as he continued to walk as best as he could.
Duo stopped in his tracks. "Hey we're not even argueing about anything serious."
"But you're still argueing." Heero pointed out and then sighed, turning towards Duo. "Listen, just lay off of Wufei while my foot is injured, okay?"
"He starts it all!" Duo exclaimed.
"Duo-"
"I'm not going to promise anything." Duo stated.
"Try."
"I will." Duo finally said, defeated. "But if Wufei starts it, I'm not going to hold back. That guy can say some really mean things when he's in a pissy mood."
"I know that Wufei can start things too." Heero reminded Duo. "I've been listening to it for the past month."
"Oh yeah." Duo scratched his neck sheepishly. "So you want any help?"
"I can walk to the car."
"Right."
"Here." Heero handed Duo the keys. "Go unlock the door before I get there."
"Righty-o." Duo saluted Heero and then headed for the car. "By the way, if I don't bug Wufei, that means you owe me big time!"
Heero just rolled his eyes and decided that the second he got home he was going to sit down with his computer and not look up for a very long time.
-----lalalala-----lalalala-----lalalala-----lalalala-----lalalala-----la lalala-----lalalala-----lalalala-----lalalala-----lalalala-----lalalala---- -lalalala
"Hey Heero?" Duo asked, poking his head in the living room. "Do you want anything to drink? Want me to massage your foot? I have a new movie that I just picked up from the video store, it should be cool to watch. Want to watch it with me?"
"No." Heero answered, looking up from his laptop as he continued to type out the letter to some editor of the newspaper. When he saw Duo's shoulders droop he sighed. "Alright, maybe later. Why don't you ask Wufei to join us?"
"Nuh uh." Duo clucked his tongue. "I don't want to watch the movie with Wufei. He'll spend the whole movie telling me how unrealistic the stunts are, even though I know that myself." Duo shook his head. "Sometimes it's just cool to see what kind of things they can do with computers nowadays. With all our techology it has to do something to amuse us."
"Tell Wufei not to talk."
"And start an arguement?" Duo raised his eyebrow. "I thought you said that I wasn't allowed to fight with Wufei for a while."
"I'll tell Wufei to keep his comments to himself." Heero said simply.
"Nah, he'll just get mad. Maybe you should spend the whole time playing with his hair or something so he doesn't pay attention to the movie. Or-" Duo wrinked his nose. "You could just watch it with me and we could not invite Wufei to watch the movie with us."
"That's not fair." Heero exclaimed simply, sighing as he typed his initals and pressed send. "We should really try to include Wufei."
"Wufei doesn't always include me, besides-" Duo flopped down on the couch next to Heero and sighed as he looked at Heero. "I want to hang out with just you for a while."
"Hn." Heero said and then frowned and looked over at Duo and then nodded. "Alright, go and get the movie and we'll sit down here and watch it right now, k? But that means that you have to give and Wufei alone time after dinner."
Duo nodded enthusiastically and then headed up the stairs. "Thanks Heero!"
Heero grinned and got himself comfortable, pulling his injuried foot up on the couch, stretching it out fully. His other foot he crossed under the injured one and kept it on the floor. Then he waited for Duo to come back downstairs with the movie.
"Here we go." Duo said, speeding back into the living room with the movie. Duo rushed over to the VCR and popped the movie in and then looked back at the couch and stared at it for a moment before looking over at the lonely chair. "I'll go sit over there."
"You don't have to." Heero said simply. "You can sit over here without hitting my foot."
Duo grinned and practically jumped on Heero while he attempted to find a position to sit on the couch. Eventually Duo ended up with his legs draped over Heero's and his butt on the part of the couch that wasn't occupied by Heero's body yet. Heero smiled reassuringly at Duo and patted his legs and then turned his head over to the television as the movie started.
About half way through the movie Heero was aware of eyes boring into the back of his skull. Heero turned his head around and was surprised to find Wufei standing there, his arms crossed leaning against the doorway, watching the movie. Heero glanced over at Duo and saw that he had also noticed Wufei standing there.
Duo however sighed before sitting up a little and turned over to Wufei with a smile pasted on his face. "Hey Wufei, that looks uncomfortable! Why don't you just sit down with us. Heero's lap is still empy, ya know." Duo smiled extra wide at that part and Heero realized that he was just putting on an act for Heero's sake. Heero also realized that he was touched by Duo's actions.
Wufei however didn't realize that Duo was just putting on an act or if he did, didn't care, so he headed over to Heero and sat down in his lap, wiggling as close to Heero as possible. Heero wrapped his arm around Wufei to support Wufei's weight while his other arm slipped around Wufei and reached for Duo's braid which he held tightly.
'Thank you' Heero mouthed to Duo and Duo just nodded sadly. (3)
-----lalalala-----lalalala-----lalalala-----lalalala-----lalalala-----la lalala-----lalalala-----lalalala-----lalalala-----lalalala-----lalalala---- -lalalala
"This piece goes here." Wufei said as he picked up a random puzzle piece and pointed to the piece he figured it connected with.
"No, it goes here." Duo replied, pointing to yet another piece that he was sure it went with.
"Here."
"No, here!"
"Here!"
"No!"
"Yes!"
"No!"
"Yes!"
"It goes with both!" Heero exclaimed as he snatched the piece out of Wufei's hand and placed it down and connected both pieces to it. Trowa and Quatre looked over at the three of them from where they were sitting, doing the sky of the puzzle and shook their head. Heero merely growled at them. "This was a bad idea!" Heero stated as he stood up from his chair and grabbed his crutches. "You guys can finish it if you want but I'm going to go to bed now."
"Want some help up the stairs?" Duo asked.
"I'll help you Heero." Wufei said as he stood up with Heero and moved to grab Heero's hand.
"No." Heero snatched his hand away and looked at the both of them. "I can make it up to my room by myself." Heero shook his head at the both of them sadly and then walked towards the stairs and slowly began his way up them.
It actually wasn't that bad, he was pretty good at getting up and down the stairs now, probably because he couldn't ask either Wufei or Duo without the other standing right there, ready to point out what they were doing wrong. Heero just wished that the two of them could go back to being friends again without being constantly on each other's tails.
Heero had called Une up yesterday to ask her when the mission was supposed to start. She had said in two days, which meant that tomorrow the two of them would be going down to the office to get briefed on what they were going to be doing. Which meant that starting tomorrow, Heero wouldn't have to spend the entire day listening to Wufei and Duo fight and bicker about every little thing.
Duo had kept his promise though, Heero had noticed. And didn't pick a fight with Wufei at all until Wufei started it. If Heero had only been able to convince Wufei that he shouldn't pick a fight with Duo, than maybe they could have had the past week of nothing more than silence instead of constant bickering.
Heero leaned his crutches up against the wall and looked down at his foot. He had gone to see Sally about it the other day and she had discovered that it was actually out of place and had to push it back into place. Which meant that it had only been healing for the past two days rather than the past week. Sally had said that it was so minutely out of place that she hadn't noticed it the first time. Heero was sure that it was true since it wasn't like Sally to make mistakes.
However it caused the two partners, Wufei and Duo, to have to be in close parameters longer than usual. For the most part, lately Heero had been taking walks to get away from the two fo them before his foot had ended up injured so one would usually follow him while the other stayed home. But now Heero couldn't do that and with them both taking the week off, they had no reason to not be near each other.
Heero didn't know how well their mission was going to go either judging by the way they always snapped at each other. Maybe if Une made it up so that they were half brothers it would work. After all, brothers fought all the time, right?
Heero shook his head and fell down on the bed, being careful to not hit his foot. Heero was just tired of the fighting. Maybe if they were forced together for so long without having Heero there, they would be forced to deal with their problems. And if not...well then Trowa and Quatre were coming with something to make it easier for Heero.
The door opened and Heero looked over his shoulder to see Duo standing in the light from the hallway. "I'm going to go to bed so good night. We'll be gone before you wake up, hopefully so I wanted to say bye now."
"Good night Duo." Heero said with a smile. "Good luck."
"Thanks." Duo said and then headed out of the room with a smile on his face.
Next Wufei came in, heading over to Heero and kneeling by the bed. "I apologize. I should have known not to yell at Duo, you're still injuried and it's not fair to you since you can not remove yourself from the situation."
"Mm." Heero said, sitting up and pulling Wufei down to him for a kiss. "It's alright, I'm starting to get used to it. The house will be quiet with you and Duo gone for that mission." Heero smiled.
"Our mission will be loud. I hope Une has found a way to work around us argueing." Wufei admitted.
"I think that you two should be the ones to find a way to work around your argueing." Heero stated and then affectionately played with the bottom of Wufei's ponytail. "I'll see you when you come home tomorrow, k?"
Wufei nodded and then kissed Heero on the forehead. "See you."
Heero pulled his blanket over him and fell asleep instantly, only to wake up two hours later by his door openeing. Heero reached under his pillow and fingered the gun that he always had there when he slept, unable to get a good night's sleep without it. Then Heero turned towards the door and was surprised to find Duo standing there, an empty look in his eyes.
"You're not going to leave while we're gone, are you?" Duo asked, so softly that Heero could berely hear him.
"No, what makes you think that?" Heero asked, letting go of the gun and shifting upwards so that he was sitting straight up in his bed. The only light in the room came from street lamp outside his window. "I'm not going to leave you, I told you that."
"I know." Duo said and slipped further into the room, sitting down on the far edge of the bed. "But I had a dream and it just felt so real and it scared me. I hate to say that something that wasn't even real scared me, but it did."
"I'm not going to leave you." Heero promised as he shifted closer to Duo, taking his covers with him and hugged Duo close. "I promise I will never be more than two minutes away at all times. You can always come and get me. You know that right?"
Duo nodded and turned in Heero's embrace to hold him close. "I just don't know how long that will last. Solo said something like that once to me-"
Heero closed his eyes, knowing all about the story of Solo. "Well I mean it." Heero smiled and shifted them both backwards. "If I can self-destruct without dying, I figure I'll be around for a while." Heero pushed them down and caused them to both be lying flat on their backs. "Come on, you have a mission you need to be ready for. Lets go to sleep."
Duo nodded and shifted closer to Heero, his breath warm on Heero's shoulder. Within a minute it was regular and Heero presumed that Duo was asleep. Heero however, stayed awake for a while after that, trying to figure out what he should do about Duo and Wufei.
Was there anything he could do about Wufei and Duo without breaking his promise to either of them?
