Chapter 3

(A/N): okay here is chapter 3. sorry I took so long but I don't get much of a chance to get on the computer anymore. and I am very disappointed with the number of reviews I'm getting. What was that number again? Oh yeah. 0 My story isn't that bad is it. Come on. I am begging for a review here. Okay enjoy the story.

Duo, Trowa, Quatre, Wufei, and Andrew just passed the flamingos and were headed toward the `cat-walk' area of the zoo. Something wasn't right. This was supposed to be the more popular area of the zoo but there weren't that many people around. Out of the few who were around, some were talking about leaving and maniacs on the loose.

As they approached they noticed a group of policemen, paramedics, and zoo security personnel all huddled in one spot.

`Somebody must have had a serious accident.' Duo thought seeing and ambulance parked near the scene.

Wufei and Trowa walked forward to investigate only to be stopped by a policeman.

"Excuse me sirs, but I can't let you come any closer. Only authorized peoples."

Wufei reached inside his jacket pocket (just so you know Heero's the only one without a jacket because… well… he's Heero and the only reason the others have jacket is because it's a little windy.) and brought out his Preventers badge to show the man. "This enough authorization for you?" He asked.

"Sorry sir I didn't know. And your friend? He's a Preventer as well?"

Trowa just nodded and they both walked pass to find out what happened.

They approached a very beat up and bloody man. Wufei flashed his badge before anyone could say anything.

"What happened here?" Trowa asked.

"As far as we can tell, this guy has been beat out-cold. He's got a broken jaw and a few broken ribs. He's not dead but he came close." Said one of the female paramedics. "The police searched the area and found a gun not to far away. It was missing a shot. A witness claimed that this guy here shot at a young woman only to have a young man knock her out of the way and taking the bullet in the arm. The man, even with the injured arm…"

She was cut off by one of the zoo security personnel.

"I was told there were two Preventers over here."

"That would be us." Stated Wufei.

"My name is Jerry." He said shaking hands with the two. "I am Head of Security here at the park. We were just reviewing the camera recordings and thought we should bring to your attention one of the identities. Or at least the only one we could find."

"And who was it?" Trowa asked when Jerry hesitated.

"It was Miss Relena."

"The man who beat up Mr. Unconscious-to-Hell over there wouldn't have been dressed in a green muscle shirt and spandex shorts would he?" asked Wufei.

"Well… yes actually he was. You know the man?"

"Yeah, I know him. He's a friend of mine. We're not needed here. Inform the police of the attempted murder of Miss. Relena. We'll look around for her."

Before Wufei and Trowa could leave Jerry asked them what they found an odd question.

"Did this friend of yours and Miss. Relena have any… any kind of… of a close relationship?"

"Meaning?" Trowa asked.

"Were they in love?"

"What does that have to do with anything?" Wufei asked.

"Well… after the fight the young man walked over to Miss. Relena and… well… they… he… he kind of kissed her."

"Guess he liked her more than he admitted." Wufei said.

"I KNEW IT! I knew he liked her." Duo yelled when Wufei told them everything they heard.

"Hear I told you someone tried to kill Relena and you're not even the least bit concerned.

"Well, why should I be concerned? Heero beat the hell out of the guy. It's not like he's going to wake up anytime soon. And when he does he'll be in jail. If he escapes and tries again Heero will kill him. Relena is perfectly safe. The fact that Heero likes her is and just an added bonus for her. Not only does she now how have a boyfriend, but also a full-time, never fail, walking, talking, living, breathing, security system. What more could the girl ask for."

"I'm not sure that's what he meant but okay." Said Quatre staring at the looking at the cheetahs as they passed by.

"So where do you think they went?" Trowa asked.

"I'm not sure but if someone just tried to kill Relena I defiantly do not want to get on Heero's bad side right now."

"Can I have a piggy-back-ride?" Andrew asked.

"Sure can, little man." Said Duo as he bent down to let Andrew on his back.

Heero took Relena far away from the scene. They now sat quietly on a bench, on the bridge over the fishpond. (you know those bridges with the quarter machines for feeding the fish.) Or at least as quiet as you could get with Relena crying into Heero's shoulder.

"Oh my gods… `sniff` why… why today. The one day I want to be alone and… and… god I'm so stupid `cries harder` thank you Heero, `sniff` thank you so much."

Heero wrapped a comforting arm around her and held her close.

"Shhh, don't cry Relena. I'll admit it was stupid what you did, coming in here alone, but I'll always be here to protect you."

Relena quieted down a little and they sat in an eerie silence. You know, that kind of silence where you just wish something would happen or someone would say something.

Heero was fine with the silence. Relena, however, with all the things on her mind, had one thing stand out above the rest.

"Heero."

"Hmm?"

"Is it true?"

"About what you said?"

"What I said?"

"Yeah. You know… when you said… said you loved me."

Heero was a little shocked at the question but couldn't blame her. A small little smile fell on his lips.

"Yeah." He paused for a second. "It is."

"Hey! Hey Heero!" yelled a familiar voice.

`Oh no. And it was just so quiet. And I liked where the conversation was going. But then Duo had to come and ruin it. And who in the world is the kid on his back.' Heero thought.

"I heard you laid the smack down to some creep. I can't believe you didn't kill the guy." Said Duo.

"I should have." He glanced up at the kid on Duo's shoulders. "Who's he?"

"Me? I'm Andrew. Are you a friend of Mr. Duo?" Andrew asked getting off of Duo's shoulders.

"You could say that." Said Heero getting up and dragging Duo off to talk to him on the other side of the bridge.

"Cute kid. Where did you find him at?" Heero asked.

"Near some freaky looking bird close to the entrance. It wasn't to long after you ran off. He's been with us most of the day. Says he's an orphan. He's snuck in the zoo somehow. He's a sweet little kid really"

"Do you believe him?"

"Yeah. As far as I'm concerned he is innocent until proven guilty."

"You always were soft when it came to kids."

"And the only soft spot you have is Relena."

"And what do you know about it?"

"Dude, you gotta be kidding me. You had your arm around her when we were walking up. Not to mention you were caught on security cameras giving her a kiss. It so obvious you like the girl, and from my point of view I'd say it's not one-sided. You and I both know it. But I have to tell you, I never thought I'd see the `Perfect Soldier` go soft for any reason at all, let alone just one girl."

Heero leaned over the railing in silence for a moment.

"I love her." Heero said turning around to face the braided pilot.

"Then ask her out. You can't get anywhere if you don't go on a date, or at least spend a little time alone with her. Take her on a picnic or something. Oh, I know!" Duo said getting all worked up "Take her on one of those little rowboats in the middle of a lake. You could take some…"

"Duo!"

"What?"

"Shut-up."

"I was only trying to help you know."

But Heero was already walking back toward the rest of the group.

"Well, just leave me standing here why don't cha'." Duo said going back as well.

Relena seemed to be in a much better mood. Andrew was in her lap singing `If Your Happy and You Know it' with her.

Heero seemed to be waiting for something. Heero had to glance at him before he figured it out.

"Hey lets go over to the kangaroos you guys."

Heero grabbed Relena's shoulder before she could join them.

"What is it Heero?"

"Relena, are you doing anything tomorrow night?"

"No why?"

"Would you like to have dinner with me then?"
