Chapter 16:

The group of convicts were ordered to stand in a single file line before boarding the shuttle. As they passed the large door of the spacecraft, they were placed in magnetic gundanium handcuffs and escorted into the 'holding area' where they one of their ankles were cuffed to a gundanium chain linked to the wall.

One after another they were cuffed to certain spots in the area. Being that it was at least a football field sized area they effectively separated each convict thus reducing the chances of them making good on their death threats. However the chains were had at least ten feet worth of slack to them letting them get close enough to the other person (if that person moved towards them as well) to use their free leg to kick or bash whoever it was's head wide open. But what did they care?

"This blows." Talim sighed resting his head backwards against the wall at his back.

"Hey, where's Quatre?" Duo asked suddenly looking over to Wufei. The Chinese teen only shrugged where he was chain. "Hn...wonder what happened?"

No sooner had he said the words, the young Arabian in question came walking in with two guards. He was free of both chains and handcuffs when the guards turned to leave.

"How come you get special treatment?" Duo asked meaning for it to be a joke.
Quatre looked sheepish then slightly embarrassed. The embarrassment turned to shame eventually. "My father wouldn't have them use such 'barbaric' methods on me." He said barely above a whisper.

"Your father?" Gypsy inquired.
Quatre nodded. "My name is Quatre Rebarbra Winner...."

"Heir to the Winner Corp?" Chef asked.

Again, Quatre nodded.

"Damn, woulda loved to know you were that loaded before." Duo mumbled. "Why didn't you tell me? And why did you mix yourself up in all this shit?"

Quatre sighed and took a seat in the middle of the room. Since he was the center of attention, there was no point in moving anywhere else. "I didn't tell you because I didn't want to run the risk of you asking for me to help hitting up my father's company. I can't stand his lifestyle but I love my father with all my heart. I mixed myself up with all of this 'shit' because I wanted to struggle for a change, to go hungry for a change....to see what it was like. Being rich....you wake up and have everything given to you on a golden diamond trimmed platter. I've had it done before, yes. There was nothing to live for in my opinion. Being the way it was with you guys....it was inspiring. Made me feel more alive....I don't know how else to explain it...."

"I....guess I get what you're saying...." Duo said slowly. "But you left your family, gave it up. I'd do anything for a family."

Talim snorted from where he sat before curling up the best he could. "Family sucks...believe me." He said turning his back to the room.

"How would you know?"

"I just do........leave it at that...."

"You bought it up and its going to be a long ride...might as well tell..." Gypsy coaxed.

"Okay...." Talim said and turned to look at her. "Tell me about you first."

"I was born in what used to be called India. My father was a merchant and my mother was a wonderer. She left when I was nine."
"I hope this isn't your version of a sob story." Talim stated coldly.

Gypsy continued undeterred. "I was ten when I killed. He was twenty. He had raped me and I ended up pregnant. I told my father and he didn't believe me so I took matters into my own hands. I waited until I had my child then I killed him....then I ran away."

"What happened to your kid?"

"She's with her grandfather as far as I know. She'll be eighteen now."

"hmm..." Talim nodded then turned back away from the rest of the room.

"What about you?" Gypsy prompted.

Talim sighed. "My mother died.....car accident. My father was an abusive drunks....my five brothers worked to protect me from him. The moment they got a chance to leave the ghettos they took it....they left me with him. I was beaten for two years before he sold me for ten dollars and a fix to a sex slave organization. I spent six years there before I killed the manager, a client, and cut my father to shreds."

Silence followed the story.
"Talim..."

"I'm fine Heero."

"Right..."

"What about you Blue Eyes?" Duo quipped. He looked defiantly towards the Japanese teen. Heero met his gaze unfazed.

"I don't remember my past." He said simply.

Duo snorted. "You're telling me you don't remember anything at all?"

"My earliest memory was stumbling upon a blood soaked redhead who had just killed his father."

"How old were you two?"

"Its rude to ask one about their age."

Duo snorted but the sound of it was quickly drowned out by the sound of the shuttle starting up. The whole craft shook and trembled around and beneath them before the roar of the engines began. Along with the sound began the long mournful howl of Quazie. All eyes went to the large man as he mourned his freedom. Silently, they mourned with him as they felt themselves grow heavy from the shuttle's take off.

Hours went by and Quazie finally quieted being comforted by Gypsy's melodious voice as she sung. Her voice was pleasantly blank as she sung not revealing the heavy sadness growing in her heart. She wouldn't be able to see her baby girl like she planned to. It was too late. Everything was too late. Crystalline tears fell glistening in the poorly lit room.

Quazie watched her wordlessly whimpering from where he sat alone.

Duo could do nothing but clench his teeth until he was sure they’d crack. His eyes were set blankly at the wall opposite to him. Absently, he toyed with his braid. He could pick the lock on his ankle and go kick the shit out of Heero and Talim but what would they solve. If they were dead they wouldn’t suffer like he would. Like all his people would.

The trembles in the shuttle began to subside along with Gypsy’s song. 0G set in slowly sending each young criminal afloat only held down by their respective chains.

“Are you going to tell us about the infamous Shinigami?” Heero asked. He gave Duo a bemused glare only to have a twin expression sent back.

“I’m an orphan from L2…don’t remember my parents at all. I stayed at a church for most of my childhood before it was blown up by a small group of terrorist. Thirteen kids, my caretakers and best friend were killed. I lived with an ex militant afterwards. He caught me stealing water. He died when I was seven from an amorism. I lived on the streets from that point on joining a street gang. I was taught everything I knew from Solo who later on died from the plague along with most of the gang. I left after than and….here I am.”

Heero nodded. For some reason the part about a church sounded familiar. From where? He couldn’t place it. Instead he pushed it away wanting nothing to do with his past. He looked over to Sally then Serpent. He wouldn’t ask them about their past. He didn’t deserve to know. His gaze moved to Talim. He didn’t look too well. “Talim…”

“The funny thing about painkillers……they always make me feel like shit….” Talim whispered curling in a ball where he floated.

“What did they give you?”

“Morphine……sixty-something… 221;

“You boys seem to have such troubled lives…” Sally spoke staring at both Heero and Talim. “I wish I could say the same. I still have both my parents, grandparents, and a lover somewhere in the world or colonies.” She shifted her eyes to Duo then Gypsy giving them all a wistful smile. “The reason I’m here with you all is because…I couldn’t stand my normal life…with dreams I couldn’t meet. I wanted children and couldn’t have any because my ovaries were removed because of some childhood illness. Pretty stupid, huh?”

“Not necessarily.” Talim aid lifting his head from the comfort of his arms. “It’s a pity. You look like you’d make a pretty good mom. Ever consider adoption?”

Sally shook her head. “Sadly, they wouldn’t let me. I’m gay…and the world still looks upon homosexuality as they did so many years ago. They automatically assume we’d molest a child. Not to mention my history of drug use and attempted suicide. I didn’t think a period that lasted on a few months would follow me up until then. It was….disconcerting.”

“This feels like a fucking talk show.” Chef grumbled. His eyes were closed where he sat calmly in the air. “I was in the navy and lost my arm,” He raised his hook for everyone to see. “, and my family, a wife, two girls and a boy all because some fucker couldn’t get his coordinates right.” With that he went back to his meditative state.

Duo snorted. That was Chef. “Quaze…wanna share?” He asked.

Quazie nodded anxious. “Me…was….a…d’formed baby. I has half….brain….and a hunchback……mama…left…..me….to die. Me never were cared for ‘till a man found….me. He love Quazie even..if I were ugly. Taught I to talk and read. Still stupid. Him died when I were young….killed. I killed thems all back.”

Everyone smiled sadly for the large man nodding.

“You’re not stupid, Quazie.” Surprisingly, the statement came from Heero. He gave the large man a meaningful glare.

“Quazie smart?”

“Hell, yeah.” Talim assured straightening to sit Indian style in the air.

“Mean that, Hell’s eyes?”

Talim blinked at the nickname and smirked. “Of course and you pack a punch like no other.”
Quazie smiled then looking towards Duo. Duo smiled back.

“You’re better than any guy I’ve met.”

“Quazie smart!!” Quazie shouted gleefully. He gave everyone the full strength of his smile receiving one back.

Mood lightened, the youths settled into a comfortable silence.
