Chapter 2: Shatterglass

Duo's POV

We could feel the beat of the music before we could even see the house.

"Duo, you didn't leave your stereo on again, did you?" Quarte asked from the passengers' seat. Beside Quarte, I saw Trowa tear his eyes away from the road long enough to glance back at me through the rear view mirror.

"Hey!" I threw up my hands in defense, "I swear, its not my fault this time!"

"Duo," Wufei said from beside me in the back seat, "it's always your fault."

"Hey, I resent that!" I yelled back-yelled because the music was now so loud that we couldn't speak normally anymore.

"I don't care if you resent it or now! There's no doubt that it's your music playing! No one else lives way out here and no one but you would even listen to that awful stuff!"

I tried to use Heero's patented Death Glare on him, but I didn't seem to phase him. I must not be doing it right. It was too bad that I couldn't get him to teach me how. I tried to ask him once, but when I went to ask him, I accidentally walked on him in the shower. That was when I found out just how beautiful, how perfectly sculpted the Perfect Soldier really was. I'd been having wet dreams about Heero in the shower almost ever night since, even though I knew Heero didn't think of me in that way.

That was also the time I found out just what happens to someone who walks in on Heero without knocking. As beautiful as Heero was in the nude, what happened afterwards had not been pretty.

Finally, I yelled, "You know, we left Heero at home. Did it ever occur to you that he turned it on?"

Quarte and Wufei just stared at me in disbelief. Trowa risked another glance back at me.

"Duo, think about what you just said," Quarte said calmly. "This is Heero we're talking about. He hates your music. Remember when he threatened-"

"Okay! Okay! I get the picture!" I sweat dropped. "Yeah, you're probably right. It would be more likely that aliens landed and turned on my stereo than Heero." Then it suddenly realized what I'd just said. "AND I'LL KILL THEM! NOBODY TOUCHES MY STEREO, DAMN IT! DRIVE FASTER, TROWA!"

"We're here," Trowa yelled back over the music. A minute later we rounded the last turn and the house came into view.

The house was completely dark. Except for the deafening music, it didn't even look like anyone was home.

Where the hell was Heero? Something was badly wrong.

Trowa parked the car in front of the garage. I jumped out before the car had even stopped moving and ran towards the house. The others were right on my heels, the groceries left forgotten in the trunk.

I stopped when I reached the door and pressed my body up against the side, so that no one could look out through the peep hole and see us. Whoever was in our house probably had no right to be there, and I didn't want them to be alerted to our presence if we didn't have to. Never underestimate the element of surprise.

Wufei took up post on the other side of the door and Quarte and Trowa automatically took up the flanks. It never hurt to be cautious, and after fighting a war, old habits die hard.

The music was too loud to talk over now, but words weren't really needed anymore. I studied the door closely, but there was no sign of a forced entry. Testing the knob, the door swung open and a new blast of music hit us like a ton of bricks. It was only by sheer force of will that we cross the threshold into the house.

We searched the rooms methodically. Starting with those closest to the front door and moving towards the living room at the back of the house. However, the entrance way, pantry, library, bedroom, kitchen and dining room turned up nothing. There really seemed like there was nobody in the house and everything was just the way we left it before we went out.

We entered the living room in a rush and then stopped abruptly, as if paralyzed by the vision of Heero before us. The darkness that penetrated the rest of the house was fought off by the blue glow of the computer screen. It highlighted his hair and tented his skin, matching the blue in his eyes. It made him seem like he was surrounded by some unearthly halo. Like something alien and not entirely of this world.

He was beautiful.

He hadn't noticed out entrance. He was still staring intently at the computer screen. He leaned down to type something and I saw his lips move, but I couldn't hear what he said over the throbbing music. However, with a sudden realization, I had a sinking feeling that I knew what was going to happen.

What occurred next seemed to go in slow motion and fast-forward all at once. Despite the darkness, I seemed to see with amazing clarity as Heero turned towards the window. I saw it when he slammed his fist through the full sized, picture window. Saw the droplets of blood that streamed down his hand. Saw the light from the compute screen reflect off the shards of glass embedded in his hand. Saw when he stepped over the boundary of the window and onto the cliff.

And saw when he stepped off.
