Over the next couple weeks the group adjusted to the new bodies in the Khushrenada home. The manor had increased by three but seemed to have increased by four. Duo found his way over to visit on many occasions, and spent a good deal of his time gawking at the new platinum blonde resident. Heero, who had been overjoyed when Zechs first showed up, now avoided the man if he could when Duo was around. On several occasions he found himself wishing that his friend had stayed in Oregon where they occasionally exchanged emails.
Trowa and Quatre had also gone through an uncomfortable change because of their new housing. They both felt guilty about burdening Treize with their room and board. To alleviate their guilt they both acquired jobs at a local construction office and offered to help with the groceries and the bills. They were both firmly denied by the elder man who insisted that they put their funds towards college. Heero and Wufei enjoyed watching Treize out stubborn the newly weds.
The discomfort of the house began to disappear the closer it got to Christmas and was replaced with excitement and anticipation as it would be the first Christmas they all spent together.
***********
“I can't believe they're cutting our Christmas break short!” Duo groaned as he walked down the school halls with Quatre. They had both just finished decorating the gym for the winter dance that night and were on their way home. Duo pouted to his friend as he threw his locker door open. “Three days is just not enough to fully appreciate the Christmas experience!”
Though inwardly agreeing, Quatre tried to reason with the braided boy. “It's because we've had too many snow days. That last blizzard took up the last of our allowed time off. It was either cut Christmas break short or extend school at the end of the year. All of the seniors voted for a short winter break. You voted for it too if I'm not mistaken.”
Duo grinned. “Doesn't mean I'm not going to complain about the suckyness that is a short break.” Quatre laughed, rolling his eyes. “So where's your boy toy? It's your twos' days off, I never see you apart on your day off.”
Quatre shrugged as he opened his locker to set his books inside. “Heero's been working on a song for the senior talent show and asked for Trowa's opinion on it, so he's helping him out.”
Duo started laughing, leaning casually against the lockers next to Quatre's. “I didn't know He-baby could do music! I'm offended he didn't ask for my help though.” Quatre rolled his eyes as Duo swooned against the lockers, complete with a hand to the forehead.
“Duo there is a very logical reason why Heero wouldn't ask for you help.” Duo blinked and bounced up from his slouched position, looking interested. Quatre shut the door to his locker and grinned deviously. “You're tone deaf.” Duo stood speechless for the one second it took for Quatre to start running away. After his moment of speechless shock Duo began to chase the laughing blonde.
***********
“Drew looks at me; I fake a smile so he won't see.” Heero's voice quietly finished, accompanied by the equally quiet guitar. Trowa sat across from the boy, watching his friend tap out the time with his foot, his eyes closed. The song had been nice to listen to, but was hauntingly sorrowful at the same time.
“It's a good song Heero; nice melody and a nice tune. It sounds like a chick's love song though.” Heero blinked then started laughing, laying his guitar down. “I also liked the subtle naming. Duo, Drew, different enough to mislead but alike enough to get the meaning across.” Heero blushed and looked away from the other boy. “When are you going to tell him you're in love with him? He's free now; he broke up with that guy we never met.”
Heero refused to look at Trowa as he stood up and started putting his guitar and music away. “With every intention of fixing his single status.” Trowa crossed his arms and raised his eyebrow in question; Heero frowned and looked back towards him. “When did he break up with his other boyfriend?”
“About a week and a half ago, about the same time that Zechs…” Trowa trailed off, his eyes wide. Heero nodded and watched as Trowa sat back in his chair, deflated. “He likes Zechs.”
“'He's hotter then a god and I'd let him cover me in chocolate any day', I believe were his exact words.” The guitar case slammed shut, punctuating his statement.
“It sounds like he's in lust, not love.”
“For Duo the two walk hand in hand.” Trowa watched as Heero shoved the music sheets into his backpack angrily, wrinkling the papers as he did so. Heero started muttering under his breath, zipping his bag furiously as he did so. “It wouldn't be so damn hard if I wasn't his best friend. He tells me everything, including the details of his many trysts.”
Trowa stood up, placing a comforting hand on the other boys shoulder, halting his aggressive actions towards his bag. “Heero…would you give up his friendship?”
Heero looked up to the banged boy then sighed weakly and shook his head. “No.” His blue eyes drifted towards the floor, staring at the tiles beneath him. “As much pain as it causes…I would never give up his friendship.” Trowa pulled the hesitant boy into a reassuring hug. “It's just…so exhausting being so close to him…but so far.”
“Then tell him Heero! Talk to him tonight, when he comes over to watch movies, before he does anything with Zechs or anyone else. You never know, he could feel the same way for you. If he doesn't, then you can move on. But you'll never know unless you try, alright?” Heero chewed on his lower lip, contemplating the proposal.
***********
“Wufei, may I speak with you?” Wufei's eyes slowly opened, he was sitting in the Treize's sunroom meditating. The platinum blonde standing in the door way had spoken hesitantly, as if weary about interrupting the Chinese boy but needed to do so regardless. Wufei nodded in acceptance, thus giving Zechs permission to walk into the room and sit down across from him. “I know you and I are still on shaky ground, after the misunderstanding with Treize.” Wufei frowned minutely. “I also think you're the only one who'll answer me truthfully.”
“What's on your mind?” Wufei stretched his arms up then pushed himself to his feet and took a seat in one of the chairs in the sun room.
Zechs repositioned himself in his seat, looking slightly uncomfortable. “Your friend Duo…” Wufei's eyebrow crept up his forehead. “Do you think he may be interested in me?” Zech's waited in hopeful silence, and Wufei allowed the quiet to drag on until Zechs began fidgeting in his seat. Wufei snorted and rolled his eyes, causing Zechs to look up in curiosity. “Is that a yes?”
“That's a hell yes. Duo has a tendency of liking pretty boys and you fit that description perfectly.” Zechs blinked and started laughing as a slight blush decorated his cheeks. “Why do you ask?” The blonde shrugged his shoulders, a small grin on his lips. “You like him.”
“He's a very attractive young man.” Zechs stated blandly, his grin spreading. Wufei rolled his eyes at the vague response then treated the blonde to one of his signature glares. It didn't take long for him to submit and with a huff of laughter he sat back in his chair and looked Wufei in the eye. “Yes, I do. I am quite attracted to your friend and would be very happy if I could ask him out. He means a lot to me, and I know he does to you as well.”
Wufei stared at the other man, watching his every movement to detect any sort of lie. When he saw none, he sighed heavily and looked helplessly down towards the ground. “Duo likes you…”
“But?”
Wufei sighed heavily. “But I know someone else who likes Duo and I would much rather see them together than you and Duo.” Zechs winced and frowned at this blunt statement. “But you have nothing to worry about because this guy won't act, hasn't acted for over a year. So… if you get to Duo first then go right ahead.”
“So you're giving me permission?”
“I'm saying that I'd rather one of my friends is happy than both be unhappy. Duo likes you, a great deal. There is no guarantee that he'd even like my other friend, and my other friend will never act on his feelings so why should I hold Duo off? Pursue him; I know he'll react positively.”
Zechs watched the Asian boy for one long second before smiling and nodding his head. “Thank you.” Wufei nodded. “Do you mind if I ask who my mysterious competition is?”
Wufei stared at Zechs for one long, uncomfortable moment. “If I tell you, you'll never act. If you want a chance with Duo it's best that he remains a mystery to you.” Zechs' eyes widened and he watched Wufei for several seconds. Wufei stared back and in their shared look somehow conveyed that despite everything else that he had said it was okay for Zechs to woo their braided friend.
Zechs bowed his head briefly in gratitude. “Thank you.”
“Just keep in mind that I don't care if you are Treize's friend, if you hurt Duo in any way what so ever I will not hesitate to beat the living shit out of you and chase your ass from this house. And I won't be the only one either, we all love Duo and we'll kill you if you hurt him.”
Zechs smiled. “I'll keep that in mind, but I assure you that you do not need to worry about that situation.”
***********
Duo hummed to himself as he walked down the sidewalk heading towards the orphanage he called home. Helen, one of his caretakers and the woman he liked to think of as a mother, had insisted that he go get some groceries before he could spend the weekend at Treize's manor. The grocery shopping had been slightly hectic, but most everyone had been in a good mood since it was so close to Christmas, which in turn put him in a good mood and gave him an extra bounce in his step as he made his way home.
A block away from the orphanage the braided boy started smelling smoke but his mind registered it as burning fireplaces in the neighborhood warding off the winter chill, and wished that he was near those fire places as his nose was pink from cold. It wasn't until he rounded the corner that he saw the fire engines and the billowing smoke rising from what he had once been his home. Lights were flashing through the night and combined with the fire the entire area was bathed in red and orange. The entire block was covered by the smoke cloud, stinging his eyes and causing them to water.
Duo stood at the corner, watching the men running around with hoses and trying to stop the flames from finishing off what remained of the orphanage. He started shaking the longer he watched and the bag of groceries fell to the ground. The glass jar of jam shattered on impact and the oranges began rolling down the sidewalk. The second the bag hit the ground Duo began running as fast as he could, dodging anything that got in his way. Once he passed the police tape uniformed arms tried to grab him, but to no avail; he just tore through them as he headed towards the burning wreckage that was his home.
“Solo! Helen!” Just as he reached the orphanage's walkway Duo's flailing braid was caught and yanked backwards. He fell back with a yell of pain and was quickly pinned to the ground by a fireman. Even pressed against the cement as he was he could still see the fire devour the last remnants of his home. He fought desperately against his captor, trying to escape his hold. “Solo!! Helen!!”
“Kid! They're gone alright? There's nothing you can do about it!” Duo continued to fight against the arms holding him. “It's a damn stupid stunt to try and join them! You know they wouldn't want that!” These words had the desired effect and the braided boy stopped struggling. Tears began to spill down his cheeks and he pressed his head against the ground, sobbing. “I'm sorry…” Duo looked up to the fireman, towards the fire then started screaming his sorrow as loud as he could.
**********
“Duo? Yes…yes, I understand. I'll be there in ten minutes. Thank you.” The residents of the Khushrenada household listened to Heero's side of a very brief conversation, all frowning in confusion and worry. They waited for some sort of explanation as he replaced the phone in it's charger but none was forthcoming and he left the room before they fully realized he had gone. Just as they began to follow they heard the front closet door slam shut and the jingle of keys being lifted from their tray. “Trowa I'm borrowing your SUV!”
“Heero wait!” Trowa made it into the foyer first but the front door was already shut. The engine roared to life and the boy was gone before he could be stopped. It had begun snowing and the only sound that accompanied Heero's travel was the thwack of the wiper blades and his racing heart. He was sure it would beat out of his chest before he ever reached the orphanage.
He was forced to park a good distance away from his destination due to the police tape and onlookers. He continued on foot, explaining to all who tried to stop him that he had been called to retrieve the only survivor. He was allowed through after that, all personnel on the scene had heard of Duo. It took Heero twenty minutes to find the ambulance the braided boy had been taken to. Duo sat inside, hunched over with a gray blanket around his shoulders. He was nearly as gray as the worn fabric and his once expressive violet eyes stared at nothing, void of all emotion.
The EMT quietly informed Heero that his friend had gone into shock as a way of explaining the boy's current state. “We'll be taking him to the emergency room, to be on the safe side.”
“No.” Heero glared the medical technician down. “He'll be coming with me.”
“Sir, I'd advice against-” He trailed off when Heero's glare intensified and swallowed in fear. When Heero was sure no further argument was forthcoming he climbed into the vehicle and kneeled in front of the braided boy. He took his hands into his own, rubbing in an attempt to bring Duo out of his own mind. Several minutes passed before violet eyes blinked, regaining their focus. The first thing he found was Heero, and this discovery had his eyebrows creasing in confusion.
Heero tightened his hold on the braided boy's hands, attempting to reassure him. “Duo…I came to take you home.” Time seemed to slow as Duo took this statement in, and processed the meaning behind it. His mind linked Heero's offer with the night's events and before he knew it tears stung his eyes and began pouring down his cheeks. His shoulders trembled in sorrow and he bent over sobbing. Heero pulled the braided boy into his arms, holding him as tightly as he could. His heart broke as he rocked the shaken boy, not once loosening his hold on the one he loved.
An eternity passed in those moments of sorrow and when Duo began to calm down slightly Heero effortlessly lifted him into his arms and began carrying him towards the stolen vehicle; Duo's eyes widened in surprise. “Damn Heero, you're stronger then you look.” Heero smiled weakly and nodded, tightening his hold on the braided boy. These were the only words spoken as they made their way back to Trowa's SUV. Duo leaned into Heero's embrace, looking back only once before quickly looking away. The moment he looked back the frame of the orphanage collapsed and shattered. The last remains of the place he called home were gone and tears began to course down his soot stained cheeks once again. Heero tightened his hold when he saw the renewed tears.
**********
Duo watched the scenery whirl by as Heero drove them up to Treize's manor. The snow was picking up, giving the outside world a dizzying affect. He was nearly as pale as the condensation and his eyes stared blankly out the window. No tears touched his cheeks though; he simply held his misery and sorrow within. Heero glanced over periodically while driving, but was unable to do more then occasionally place a comforting hand on his shoulder due to the treachery of the roads.
The SUV pulled into the garage, causing amethyst eyes to blink into comprehension. When Duo took in his new surroundings he sat up straighter in his seat. “Thanks for letting me stay …I shouldn't be here long. Social Services will ship me out of here soon I bet.”
“Don't be stupid.” Heero scolded, turning in his seat so it would be easier to talk to his grieving friend. “You know Treize will let you move in, and if he has to he'll take you as a foster child. We're not going to let anyone take you Duo…” Heero reached over and squeezed Duo's hand reassuringly.
Duo pulled away. “You don't need to put yourselves out. I'm used to being an orphan.” Heero began to frown in annoyance until he saw the unshed tears begin to fill Duo's eyes. “I'm used to being alone…so why bother?”
“Because I love you.” Duo's eyes widened with shock. “We all do Duo. We're a family, the six of us. And you may be used to being alone…but you don't have to be. I'm sure I speak for everyone when I say that we'd miss you if you left.” Heero pulled Duo forward into a tight hug. “We all love you Duo…We want you to stay and nobody's going to take you away. I won't allow it.” Duo nodded slowly. “Duo if you need to cry, then cry. I'm right here for you.” These seemed to be the words the braided boy needed to hear as he instantly lost his battle against his sorrow and started crying into Heero's shoulder. Heero simply held him, rubbing his back soothingly.
They stayed that way for a half hour that felt like much longer. Heero was surprised that none of the other boys came out and assumed they had heard and were giving Duo his privacy. When Duo began calming down he pulled away and rubbed at his now red eyes and nose. Heero's shirt was fairly wet from his tears and when he realized this Duo started laughing weakly. “You're shirts soaked.”
“I'll live, I guarantee it.” Duo chuckled and finished clearing off his face. “Feeling better?” Duo nodded. “Good.” The two climbed out of the vehicle and began walking into the mansion, Heero wrapping a comforting arm around Duo's shoulders. They were met in the kitchen by the entire group. Duo was pulled from Heero's grasp and smothered in blankets before he could blink and when that was done Quatre insisted on the braided boy taking a large mug of hot chocolate.
“Duo, your room is ready for you, and I've called social services. They know and have agreed to you staying here, and we will be making arrangements to make it permanent.” Treize assured, resting a hand on the boys shoulder. Duo smiled weakly before taking a shaky sip from his hot chocolate. Heero was giving him an I told you so look from the side where he stood beside Wufei and Trowa. Treize nodded and he, Quatre and Zechs began leading Duo up the stairs. Heero collapsed on one of the breakfast stools, sighing heavily.
“How did you all find out?”
“It's all over the news.” Wufei filled a mug with the same steaming chocolate that had all but been forced down Duo's throat and handed it to Heero. “Right now, it's believed that that the cause of the fire was a gas leak. Apparently Solo called to get it fixed but couldn't afford the repairs.”
“Duo is the only survivor.” Trowa added, sitting down across from the other two. “Reports say that at last count there were ten kids staying at the orphanage, a total of eleven casualties is expected.” Heero sighed sadly and took a drink from his mug. Silence descended over the room for several minutes as Heero finished his drink and the other two boys watched as he anxiously looked up the stairs periodically. Ten minutes later Trowa broke the silence. “You didn't tell him.”
Heero slammed the mug down, glaring at the banged boy. “What am I, a heartless ass? Of course I didn't tell him! I was a little too preoccupied with his welfare to try and get myself a date with him. For god's sakes Trowa.”
“You're going to finally tell him?” Wufei's question interrupted any possible war that may have broke out between the two brunets in the room.
“I was.” Heero said quietly. “I'm not anymore. Now's not the best time to spring a relationship on him; assuming he said yes.” Heero sighed weakly and leaned on the counter, fisting his fingers in his hair. //I finally developed enough guts and then this happens…// While Heero was lost in his thoughts silence had once again assaulted the room. This time it was a heavy silence, full of enough tension to rouse him and cause him to look up. Wufei was pale, looking guilty and nervous all at the same time. Trowa was glaring at him. “What?”
Wufei glanced at Heero before looking down to his pants to pick an imaginary speck off of them. “Someone…came to me today. He wanted to know about Duo, and if there was the possibility of Duo liking him.” Wufei looked up to Heero again, his expression pleading for understanding. “You've been in love with him for so long Heero and you've never acted on your feelings. I didn't think you ever would. I wanted at least one of you two to be happy if both of you couldn't be.”
Silence again as Heero stared at his flustered friend, processing the confession he had just received. It took several long minutes for the words to take root and when they did his complexion paled by a good deal. “What…?” He shook his head, trying to shake out his confusion and deny what he was sure Wufei had said. “What are you talking about `Fei?”
“I'm talking about a man who likes Duo and is planning on telling him. And I doubt he has the same hesitations that you're having. He was planning on telling him tonight, and I believe he still will.”
Heero jumped to his feet, knocking his stool over. He was even paler then he had been just a mere moment before. “Who?” It was the most hesitant whisper he could have uttered.
“Zechs.” Wufei answered, though it pained him to do so. The mere mention of that name deflated the genius and he sank against the counter he had been sitting at. Trowa too looked surprised, but it quickly turned to anger and he started glaring at Wufei. “I'm so sorry Heero…but there is still time.” Heero looked up, a faint gleam of hope in his eyes. “But you'd have to act now.”
***********
Duo smiled weakly as Quatre fussed with the blankets that were draped around him. The braided boy had escaped the worried blonde for a mere minute to change into his pajama's before he was given another mug of hot chocolate, chased into his bed and smothered in blankets. Treize made sure Duo had the necessities of clothes and toiletries, promising to take the boy shopping after Christmas to get anything else he would need. Zechs remained silent, observing the tornado that was Quatre from a corner in the room. When Quatre began to fuss with the blankets yet again Duo laughed and pushed him away. “Quatre I'm fine, the blankets are fine, the cocoa is fine. I'm just tired.”
“Oh.” Quatre smiled weakly. “Alright then. You're sure you don't need anything else though?” Duo shook his head, yawning in an exaggerated manner to prove his point. Quatre laughed. “Alright, get some sleep goofball. If you need anything just yell for it, Trowa and I are just a door away.”
“Thanks Q.” Quatre leaned in and gave Duo a tight hug before he hesitantly left the room. Treize followed the small blonde's lead, assuring Duo that everything would be taken care of and walked out. Zechs alone remained, and made no move to leave. Duo noticed this and perked a little in confusion. “Did you need something Mr. Merquise?”
“Zechs.” The blonde corrected, earning a grin from the braided boy. Zechs walked over and knelt by the bed so Duo wasn't forced to look up. “Are you sure you're really okay Duo?” He nodded with a goofy grin. “It'd be alright if you weren't you know.” Duo lost his grin but continued to smile at the worried blonde.
“I'm sad and confused and it hurts, but I've been through pain like this before and I know how to handle it. I am, and will be alright. You don't have to worry about me.” Zechs searched Duo's violet eyes for a lie and sighed in acceptance when he found none. With that battle over Zechs once again looked into Duo's eyes, and his look was shared for one very long, silent moment. Neither moved, and both men barely breathed for fear of disturbing the moment. “Was there something else…Zechs?” Duo's voice came out quiet, hesitant and hopeful. His timid question shattered the silence of the room and caused Zechs to jump slightly.
Zechs continued to stare at Duo, feeling his heart pound against his chest. He was even having a hard time breath for fear of what was to come. He was about to take a huge risk by trusting a boy that had hated him and threatened his life. He was taking an even bigger risk because of the events of that night. But, if the risk played out how he wanted it to, it would be well worth it. He had been instantly attracted the braided boy, but over just a few short weeks his attraction had gone deeper then the boy's physical allure. He was sure that Duo was the person he could easily fall in love with, if he wasn't already.
“Zechs?”
The blonde swallowed around a lump in his throat and taking a few shallow breaths as he once again focused on the boy in the bed. “Yes Duo… there is something else I'd like to ask you. I know you've been through a lot tonight and right now is a god awful time to tell you this, but it's something I have to tell you and I'm not sure I'd be able to build up enough courage to do it again.” Duo frowned curiously as he watched Zechs stand up and sit on the very edge of his bed. “Duo, you're amazing. You're beautiful, funny, charismatic, and adorable. You're perfect…and I find it impossible to stay away from you.”
Duo listened to Zechs' hushed confession and a smile began to steal over his lips. In no time at all the expression was a full out grin and he sat up straighter in bed with excitement. “Zechs, are you saying that you might possibly like me?”
The grin caused Zechs to relax and grin at the younger boy himself as he mentally sighed in relief. “Yes, I am. In fact, it's a like so intense that it it's quite close to love.” Duo's eyes widened in shock, and stopped breathing all together as the blonde leaned down, gently brushing Duo's bangs from his cheeks. “I believe it may actually be love, Mr. Maxwell.” With this Zechs leaned in all the way and brushed his lips over Duo's gently at first and then more urgently until he was kissing Duo for all he was worth. When he pulled back a faint blush decorated both his and Duo's cheeks. “And if you'll let me, I'd very much like to find out if it actually is.”
Duo, still blushing, stared at Zechs with a stunned grin. “Damn Zechs, you do that again and I'm yours for life.” Zechs laughed with the braided boy and leaned in to continue where he left off.
**********
Heero climbed the backstairs, carrying a bowel of soup for Duo. His heart was pounding wildly as he ascended each step. //What if he turns me down? What if this is too much for him right now? // Too many ifs plagued his mind as he climbed the last step. When he reached the same hall as Duo's room his hands began to tremble, causing the spoon to clink against the porcelain bowl. //What if he doesn't love me and I lose his friendship? I don't want to risk that, I couldn't bear it.//
As he neared the door he could hear Duo's voice but his mind was too cluttered to actually understand the words. He could hear his own heartbeat in his ears, drowning out nearly everything else, until he heard somebody else laugh in the room; someone who was not Duo. He sped up, spilling some soup on his hands but he paid the mild burns no attention, he was focused. As he turned into the doorway his heart was beating so hard it nearly hurt.
The laughter, his heart, everything stopped as time seemed to freeze. He stood in the doorway, staring into the room with wide, disbelieving eyes.
Zechs had Duo pressed back into the pillows, kissing him slowly and passionately. The blonde's hand was in Duo's hair, his thumb brushing over his cheek; something Heero had always wanted to do. Duo was smiling, kissing Zechs back with his arms wrapped around the older man's shoulders. They were oblivious to the world as they enjoyed the moment. It was a happy moment, romantic and sweet. There was no denying the bliss shared by the occupants of the room.
Heero was heartbroken; he had missed his chance because of his inability to act. Breathing became all but impossible as he sat the tray by the door and rushed back towards the stairs, ignoring the sting of tears.
The entire group was waiting for him in the kitchen. They knew that whoever walked down the stairs first would be the man who reached Duo too late. Quatre was kicking himself for giving Zechs the advantage of leaving him alone in the room. The three teenagers were hoping that Zechs would be the one while Treize dreaded either option. The creak of the last stair caused the entire group to jump and anxiously look up to the doorway. Their hearts fell in that same instant.
Heero silently walked in, looking up once before looking down again; unable to deal with the pity he saw in four sets of eyes. Quatre walked over and pulled the unresponsive boy into a hug. “I am so sorry Heero.”
“I'm fine.” Heero protested, pulling away from the embrace, and the comfort of those in the room.
“But Zechs-”
“-Is a wonderful guy. He couldn't have picked anyone better.” Heero smiled at the group, but it was obviously a stressed expression. “I'm happy for them. They make a great couple.” Heero turned towards the second door out of the kitchen, desperately seeking an escape. As he walked out he left the group with a quiet dismissal. “It was only a crush after all.”
They all watched him leave in silence. “Like hell it was just a crush.” Wufei spat, shattering the tension of the room. “He's been in love with Duo since last year.”
“But does Duo like him in that way?” Treize asked, watching each boy think over his question. “I have never seen any indication of such feelings. Since we've known Duo he's continuously had one fling after another. I've lost track of how many boyfriends he's had.” Though they looked sad, after some consideration Wufei, Trowa and even Quatre nodded in agreement. “I don't think he likes Heero in any way other then a friend. I know Zechs and I think he may just be able to keep Duo from bouncing off to the next man he sees. Zechs is wild enough Duo won't be bored, and stubborn enough to get what he wants. He's not the type for a fling and he wouldn't have pursued Duo if he didn't have feelings for him.”
“But Heero…” Quatre started sadly, glancing towards the door the other boy had escaped from.
“Heero has realized that it's time to move on.” Trowa interrupted quietly, rubbing Quatre's shoulders reassuringly. “That's what he was trying to tell us.” Quatre sighed and nodded, all agreeing though they were saddened for what they knew was a broken heart.
***********
The next day was Christmas Eve and the group spent the day doing activities such as decorating, wrapping and cooking; activities that they had planned to do the previous night. Duo and Zechs hid nothing of their new relationship; Duo even seemed to cling to the blonde man. Despite the fact that they spent the entire day together it was Heero who did most of Duo's caretaking. While making sure Duo ate, slept and relaxed his attitude was of concern and nothing else. He showed no sorrow, regret or upset.
“Duo,” The braided boy looked up from the card game he was playing with Zechs. Treize had entered the sitting room they were in. “I just got off the phone with Social Services. They have completed the paperwork; you are officially my ward until your eighteenth birthday.”
It took a minute for Duo to process this information, when he did his eyes widened and cast his eyes downward in amazement. “Thank you…” Duo whispered as he chewed his lower lip nervously. Treize nodded with a smile.
“For now you'll have to use some of Heero's clothes, but we'll go shopping after Christmas and get you your own stuff. Sound alright?” Duo again nodded, this time speechless. “Duo, if you need more time off from school to recuperate, we'd all understand.”
This statement caused Duo to look up, smiling weakly at the older man. “Thanks Treize, but it's not necessary. I'll be alright.” Treize nodded at the younger boy then glanced over his shoulder to his long time friend.
“So you still have to cheat at cards to win, eh Zechs?” Duo turned to see Zechs leaning over the table, trying to glance at the braided boy`s cards. He instantly started hollering at the man, throwing his cards at him. The other man held up his arms in surrender, laughing and glaring at Treize all in the same breath. Treize just shrugged with a smirk and walked out, listening as Duo continued to loudly assault his new boyfriend. As he stepped into the hallway he saw Heero speeding around the corner, looking worried.
“What's Duo yelling about? Is something wrong?”
Treize shook his head, still chuckling as he heard Zechs start to fight back. “Nothings wrong Heero, Zechs was cheating at cards and Duo caught him.” The tousled hair boy blinked once as he took in the information then began to chuckle quietly in understanding. His smile even reached up into his eyes. “There's a real smile.” In an instant it was gone and replaced with confusion. “You've been smiling, but not genuinely for a while now. That smile just now was a real one.”
“Gomen nasai.” Heero whispered quietly, his eyesight traveling to the vicinity of his shoes. Treize reached out, taking Heero's arm and pulled him into a different room. The sunroom was just down the hall from where they had been, but they were now alone and could barely hear the squabbling couple.
Treize sat the boy down and sat near him, looking Heero over. With just a glance Heero seemed fine but now he could see a slight puff under his eyes, which were also bloodshot. He was also slightly pale. “You're not alright with Duo and Zechs are you?” Heero frowned and tried to pull away from Treize's intense gaze. “You can't argue with me Heero, I can see it in your eyes and posture. My question is if you can get over this? Or is Duo going to be something you cling on to like you do with Levi.”
Heero met Treize's eyes for one long moment before he looked down, sighting sadly. “I…I don't know. I love Duo, but he is happy now. He and Zechs like each other a lot, and I'm happy for them.” He quickly stood up, evading his mentor's grasp. “I have cookies in the oven, sorry.” Treize watched as Heero rushed from the room, frowning to himself in worry.

Heero was still baking cookies when Zechs walked into the kitchen an hour later. “What smells so good?” Heero, who was bent over looking into the oven, looked up to his friend smiling.
“Sugar cookies. They're Duo's favorite and I figured he could use the pick me up.” Zechs made his way to the already cooled pile of cookies and snatched one. After taking a bite he nodded his head in approval. “You always were a sweet fiend.” Heero said with a smirk.
To which Zechs only grinned. “Guilty as charged.” The blonde sat down on one of the kitchen stool, quickly finishing his stolen cookie. “Since when can you cook?” Heero frowned at the blonde, causing him to laugh. “The last time I was here the dog wouldn't eat your cooking.” Heero's frown turned into a glare and he quickly replaced a sheet of finished cookies for a sheet of raw ones.
“Wufei and Trowa have been tutoring me for the past four years. I can cook better then Treize now.”
“Impressive.”
“It's your boyfriend who can't cook to save his life.” Heero finished laying the cookies on a cooling rack and sat down next to the blonde. “He's been banned from any and all appliances.”
“Oh?” Zechs, interested, leaned forward as if the movement would inspire Heero to continue.
The other boy chuckled and looked up towards the roof. Above the stove was a blackened scorch mark, which made Zechs' eyes widen. “He was literally trying to boil water.” Zechs stared then started laughing. “That was only the first episode. The last time was last year; we don't know what he was trying to bake but he blew it up and Treize had to replace the stove.” Heero smiled to himself at the memory. “Solo made him mow the lawn for two months to make up for the expense. Duo hasn't been allowed in the kitchen since.”
“Who?” Heero stopped in confusion. “Who's Solo?” Zechs looked just as confused as his question had made Heero.
“Oh. Solo was the leader of the orphanage. Solo and Helen were like Duo's parents; they were wonderful people and very special to Duo.” Heero got up to check on the cookies in the oven. “Besides us they were all he had.”
Zechs sighed in frustration. “I see.”
“What's wrong?”
“He doesn't talk about them, about what happened, nothing. I realize he hasn't known me for very long, but he isn't talking to anyone. Losing someone like he lost…he needs to grieve and he's not.”
Heero took the cookies out of the oven and set them on the cooling rack. When he was done he turned back towards Zechs, leaning on the counter. “What's he doing?”
Zechs brushed his bangs out of his face in aggravation. “He's acting like nothing happened. He's playing, laughing and being the goofball I know him to be. He's not reacting at all.”
“Zechs?” The blonde looked up. “That is his way of coping. Duo has lost so much in his life that there's no way for him to mourn. In his opinion it's a waste of time to scream, cry and throw a tantrum. He'd rather honor his loved ones, his memories, by living, not grieving.” Heero smiled reassuringly. “He's had his breakdown already, now he's recovering in his own way. You don't need to worry.”
Zechs smiled and ruffled the already tousled locks in front of him. “Thanks Heero. You're a wonderful friend.” Heero smiled weakly before pulling his head away from the ruffling motion. Zechs watched as he grabbed a basket, laid a swath of cloth in the bottom and began filling it with the sweets he'd been baking. //If ever you open yourself to love Heero you'll make someone very happy, and they'll be the luckiest person alive.//
Heero didn't see Zechs' lingering look while he worked on building the basket. “I'm a good friend Zechs, but you need to be a good boyfriend.” Heero laid a second cloth over the top of the cookies, to keep in what warmth they still had. “Give these to Duo, tell him you made them. He'll love it and you'll get brownie points for it.” Zechs grinned and pulled the younger boy into a quick hug of gratitude. Heero smiled and hugged back. The flash of a camera went unnoticed.

“Presents!” The house awoke suddenly with Duo's excited yell. In various states of baggy pajama bottoms the group trudged downstairs, wiping the sleep from their eyes and yawning tiredly. Once they entered the living room they were wide awake and none could contain their laughter at the sight of Zechs literally sitting on the braided boy to keep him from tearing into the gifts. Duo was attempting to shove Zechs off but wasn't having much success. “Tell him to get off!”
“A little help would be nice!” Zechs grumbled as he caught one of Duo's flailing arms. Heero smirked as he took a few pictures of the scene, all of which featured a very disgruntled Zechs and an excited Duo. Quatre and Trowa went into the kitchen to grab a few things and Wufei and Treize got things situated in the living room.
Duo wasn't released until a fire was lit and all had a mug of hot chocolate. Only then did he grudgingly give up his pursuit of the Christmas gifts to sit on the loveseat with Zechs. Quatre and Trowa had sprawled out on the couch closest to the fire, the blonde wrapped up in a blanket. Treize and Wufei had taken the last love seat which left Heero the single chair.
The task of unwrapping was quickly underway and carried on at a fairly normal rate. Each gift was gushed over properly before the boy moved onto the next. Treize and Wufei, the only two not disowned from their family or orphaned, received a few gifts from their family members, which they attempted to open discretely so as not to flaunt the gifts in front of those without family members.
Duo was shocked to silence for the first time that morning when he opened the gift from Heero. His silence instantly drew everyone else's attention and they all watched as Duo slowly peeled off the remnants of paper to be sure of the content of the gift. The Japanese boy had given everyone in the group fairly expensive gifts, his computer job made quite a bit of money and he used what he made to buy his little family nice presents, but the gift he had given Duo was one that he had wanted for years and was never able to afford. “Heero…” The brunette, who had not been paying attention to the other boy, looked up from one of his own gifts to see Duo holding the Nikon F6 he'd given him. “Heero…you really shouldn't have…”
“Wow, that's a nice camera!” Zechs said as he took the box from Duo's numb fingers and looked the box over. Duo missed a few knowing glances passed back and forth between the other members of the group as he continued to stare at Heero in disbelief.
“It's too much Heero, I can't…”
“It's not.” Heero interrupted, startling the other boy into silence. Heero shrugged weakly, smiling. “You've wanted that camera since it came out and you deserve it. If it makes you feel better I got it on sale.” Duo continued to stare at Heero as he thought over the situation.
Before long he grinned and bounced over to the quiet boy, hugging tightly. “Well then in that case I accept! Thanks He-man!”
Heero smiled, hugging Duo back. “You're welcome Duo.” When the braided boy started to pull back Heero's look turned playfully stern. “You're going to have to get your black room yourself though.” Duo laughed and nodded. “Treize said you could set it up downstairs when you do.”
“Sweet!” Duo grinned, and sat down in Zechs' lap. Before long the box was open and the couple was putting the camera together slowly as they interpreted the directions attached. Heero got up and walked into the kitchen to refill his mug; Wufei followed him.
“That was extravagant.”
“It was on sale.”
“No, it wasn't.” Heero frowned over to his friend. “We all know why you did it. We're just wondering if you'll be able to get over him.”
Heero looked down to his mug as he poured the hot chocolate. “I will Wufei, and I'm a little tired of being asked that.” Wufei's eyebrow crept up his forehead sarcastically. “Listen, I'm not saying it's going to be easy. It's going to be damn hard and it's going to take a long time. I didn't lust after him, I didn't have a crush. I love him, but he's not mine to have and I will, eventually, get over him.” Wufei slowly nodded acceptance and watched as Heero returned to the party.
**********
The group returned to school a couple short days after their Christmas festivities. The news of the orphanage fire had spread throughout the school and Duo was instantaneously mobbed by a group of well wishers. As hugs, flowers and stuffed bears were forced into the braided boy's arms the rest of the group made a hasty escape as they were pushed further away from their friend.
Surprisingly enough, considering Duo's inability to keep a secret, he and his blonde lover showed no indication of their new relationship. Even while they were in the same room they acted just the same as they had been before the holiday weekend. No sly looks were exchanged, no touches, no flirtation.
At lunch Duo and Treize left for the school office to alter Duo's records and information. It took a surprisingly lengthy amount of time to change simple things such as phone numbers and addresses. While they were in the office the group gathered for lunch and continually cast worried glances towards Heero. The boy endured the looks silently for as long as he possibly could, but as they continued through out the day and each of his classes he found himself unable to deal with it anymore and sought refuge in the music room.
In an attempt to get over Duo he was working on writing a new song for the talent show. He was so engrossed in creating the lyrics he didn't hear the door open and shut quietly. He didn't even hear the lock slide into place. “Wake up! Alarm clocks ringing, toll bells bringing in another day.”
“Those lyrics are awesome, Heero.”
Heero dropped the pen and paper he was working with and whirled around to see none other then Relena Peacecraft. She was standing a few feet away from him, smiling a smile that caused his heart to freeze in his chest. She took a step forward and he hurriedly left his seat to escape her, causing the chair to fall over. “What do you want Relena?” Surprising even himself he managed to keep his voice from shaking with fear.
“To talk, is that so bad?” Relena pushed her lip out into a pout and fluttered her eyelashes. Heero took another step away from her. “Actually I have something to show you.” The girl reached into the backpack at her feet, making sure to lean forward and give Heero ample opportunity to see down her blouse. She pulled out a manila envelope and held it out. Treating the thing like a viper Heero reached over and took the package; his eyes growing to an impossible size when he actually saw the contents within. “As you can see we have much to talk about.”
“Where did you get this?” He was too shocked to even attempt to cover his reaction. In his hands was a series of pictures, all of which revealing. In the first picture Treize and Wufei were asleep in their bed, with nothing left to the imagination, and another of the two making out in the classroom. Heero himself was the star of the next frame; it was a picture of him and Zechs in the kitchen holding each other in a hug. The fourth and last was of Duo and Zechs kissing under the mistletoe.
Relena smiled as Heero continued to leaf through the pictures. “There's also a video of Mr. Khushrenada and that stuffy Chinese boy.”
Heero's complexion dropped a few shades. The pictures were damning, a video would be worse. In a matter of seconds he felt trapped, and his stomach had risen to the vicinity of his throat, causing a lump there that felt suspiciously like fear. Despite this rush of emotion his rational mind was still working. “What do you want? You wouldn't show me this unless there was something to gain.”
“I have a proposition for you Heero. I won't reveal these if you and I start dating.”
“No!” Heero yelled, stumbling backwards. He had already been feeling nauseous, now he was sure that he was going to lose his lunch. “No I can't, I won't!”
Relena pouted even as she grinned. “I'm sure the school board would like to know that two of their staff is molesting minors, one of which is from a foreign country. They'll lose their jobs forever, probably even be arrested.”
Heero glared at her, his hands balling into fists. “You wouldn't…” Relena smiled. “Zechs is your own brother!”
“No, he isn't.” Relena sat down and fingered the pictures still clutched in Heero's numb fingers. “He left our family.” Relena smiled to herself, looking up to Heero through her eyelashes. “I'm sure the media would love this. They feast on the lives of the wicked.”
“Don't!”
Relena ignored his angered snarl and held up the picture of Wufei and Treize in bed. “How long do you think it would take for Wufei's family to find out and pull him home?” Heero clenched his teeth tightly and glared at the floor. The girl's smile grew. “You and Duo will have to be sent to different foster homes, probably on opposite sides of the country.”
“No…”
“The only two who will remain together is Quatre and Trowa. They'll be together but without family, support or a home.”
“Stop it!”
“You stop it.” Relena crossed her legs and exposed a large amount of thigh, which Heero avoided. “All you have to do is join with me.”
Heero looked up to her, his glare a pale shimmer of what it had been. “I can't…” Heero looked down, trembling. “I…I would rather be beaten, brutalized and raped by a man…then to be any where near a woman. And everyone knows that.”
Relena watched him for a very long moment. He looked extremely sick, giving proof to his statement. “An alternative then, you can save your friends and stay single.” Dead blue eyes looked up to her once again. “In exchange you and I will secretly be lovers; once a week.”
“I can't.” Heero whispered.
“This is your only option.” Relena crossed her arms and watched the inner struggle fought in Heero's eyes. After agonizing silence the unruly haired boy whispered his answer. “I couldn't hear you Heero.”
“I said…I'll do it.” Relena smiled brightly and bounced into a kiss. He felt his gorge rise at the touch, at the smell of her. His breathing became shallow and he felt his heart slow to a stop. Despite this he let her tongue into his mouth and he didn't fight the hands that removed his clothing. He just kept thinking of the people he was doing this for.
//For them…I won't let anything happen to them…//

It's a horrible ending I know! Sorry! Hope you enjoyed it anyway though…well…maybe not. Kinda a sad chapter, but I warned you all that angst was on its way! And as a warning it may be a while before the next chapter because I am extremely busy with school and have fallen slightly behind. Encouragement will make it come faster though. *winks*
Next time: Heero suffers his secret silently and Quatre reunites with his father.
