Chapter 2
Roy pulled put his State Alchemist pocket watch and looked at the time. “Where the hell could she be?” He asked. “Colonel, maybe she got caught up in traffic.” Riza said. “I doubt it.” Roy said. “Colonel Mustang, we're here to take you to Central Headquarters.” Maria Ross said. “Where's Kagome?” Roy asked. “We don't know a Kagome.” Denny Bloch said. “GENERAL HIGURASHI THEN!” Roy exploded. Maria and Denny looked at each other before turning back to Roy. “The car's waiting Colonel.” Maria said. Riza gave them both a skeptical look before following them to the car. Denny opened the door for them and closed it. “The only way we can go is past the hotel.” Maria whispered. “Well there must be another way, lets see.” Denny said pulling out a map of Central. “What's going on Lieutenant Ross?” Riza asked. Maria turned around to look at them with sad eyes. “Nothing you need to know yet.” She said turning back around and beginning to drive. Roy and Riza looked at each other with confusion on their faces. Maria gripped the steering wheel as she gradually stopped the car and closed her eyes tightly. “Why are we stopping?” Roy asked. “Don't worry about it Colonel.” Denny said as two MP's came up to the car. “Hello again Ross, where are you heading?” One of the MP's asked. “Back to Central Headquarters.” She answered. The second MP nodded. “Be careful, we're not sure who killed Lieutenant Colonel Hughes yet.” He said. Maria nodded before they let her drive off. “Stop the car!” Roy demanded. Maria paid him no mind and kept driving. Roy growled and opened the door and jumped out of the moving car. “Colonel!” Everyone in the car screamed at him.
The Reikai Tentai got questioned at least twice at the crime scene. “How the hell do we have a motive for killing this guy?” Yusuke asked. “No idea, I'm concerned about Kagome though.” Kurama said. “Yeah, good point. Where is she anyway?” Kuwabara asked. “She's getting questioned.” Armstrong said pointing to where Kagome was standing with an MP. “So let me get this straight, you saw his ghost and didn't believe that he was dead. Then you ran all over Central HQ looking for him, finally you heard that he would be at Hotel Perfect, and ran there. Then the receptionist said that Doctor Marcoh wasn't there so you came over here to use the phone, then when you were done with your phone call you saw his body and screamed.” He said reading off of his notepad. “Yes, have many times do I keep having to say that?” Kagome said breaking down into tears of sadness and frustration. The MP motioned for Armstrong to come and get her. Armstrong excused himself from the group and placed a blanket around Kagome's shoulders. “Thanks Major, I think I just want to be alone.” Kagome whispered. He nodded and watched her walk to a deserted part of the woods.
Roy stood up and brushed himself off before shaking his head to clear his vision from the little spots. “Damn that hurt. Who put that ditch there?” He grumbled rubbing his head. “Colonel Mustang, what are doing here?” Kagome asked rushing over to him. “Why the hell didn't you tell me?” He asked grasping her shoulders. “Roy what are you talking about?” Kagome asked. “Why didn't you tell me that Hughes was dead?” Roy asked shaking her. “Because I didn't want to upset you. I'm sorry.” Kagome said starting to cry again. “Another reason is because she didn't know he was dead when she talked to you on the phone.” Koenma said stepping out of the tree line. `Koenma.' Kagome thought gratefully. Roy loosened his hold on the General as he continued looking her in the eye. “I'm sorry; I shouldn't have done that to you. Forgive me?” He asked. Kagome smiled and stood on her tiptoes. “Of course I do, I don't see how I couldn't.” She said pecking him lightly on the lips. Roy gave her a small smile, as a chorus of `Colonel's rang through the air. Roy let go of Kagome before turning to look at the three people running to him. Kagome slipped away from him and turned to Koenma. “I guess I owe you.” Kagome said. Koenma shook his head. “No, just promise to check in every once and a while.” Koenma said. Kagome cocked her head to the side, obviously confused. “What are you talking about, Koenma?” Kagome asked. “Kagome, you're fired.” Koenma said. Kagome's eyes widened and launched onto him in a hug, which he returned.
“General Higurashi, we need to talk with you and Colonel Mustang.” One of the MP's said. “Alright, since you keep interviewing me, may I have your name?” Kagome asked letting go of Koenma. “Inspector Jarred Price.” Jarred said. Kagome nodded before walking over to Roy. “Colonel, they need us for interviews.” Kagome said tapping him lightly on the shoulder. Roy turned and looked at her, then at the place where he could see everyone running around like lunatics. Roy nodded his head and Kagome gave him a reassuring smile.
`I can't believe the Lieutenant Colonel is dead.' Armstrong thought as he saw Roy and Kagome coming towards him. “Major Armstrong where's Inspector Price?” Kagome asked. “Over there talking with the boys.” Armstrong pointed. Kagome nodded and took in a deep breath. “Let's go Roy.” Kagome said. When no one answered her she turned and saw him looking into the body the body bag with the paramedics standing next to him. She felt something push in her back towards where Roy was. Kagome looked up into the face of Armstrong. “Go to him.” He said. “I can't, you know I can't!” Kagome yelled, her face twisted in shock. “He doesn't need to talk to you like a superior officer and a lower officer. He needs to talk to you like a friend.” He said. Kagome looked at him and knew he was right.
“WE WERE NOWHERE AROUND HERE!” Yusuke yelled at Inspector Price. “Alright, I guess for now you're off of the hook. Bring me General Kagome Higurashi.” He said. Kurama and Kuwabara had to drag him away from the inspector before he `accidentally' shot him with his Spirit Gun. “Where's the military woman?” Hiei asked looking around for Kagome. “She's talking to Colonel Mustang.” Armstrong said watching the two. Yusuke calmed down enough for Kurama and Kuwabara to let him go. The five of them watched Kagome and Roy. “You going to be okay Mustang?” Kagome asked. “He was my best friend, he was supposed to be my best man at my wedding.” Roy said ignoring Kagome's question. Kagome looked at him shocked before rubbing his back trying to sooth him. “Excuse me, General Higurashi, Colonel Mustang, but we need to take his body to the Funeral Home.” One of the paramedics said. Roy turned to look at him with sad eyes. “Go ahead, I'm done.” Roy said. The paramedics nodded before zipping the bag up and walking over to the ambulance. “General, do you mind if I step out of uniform for a second?” Roy asked. “Not at all Roy.” Kagome answered. Roy faced her and hugged her tightly. Kagome wrapped her arms around him and rubbed his back before pulling back. “You want me to take you back to your apartment?” Kagome asked. Roy nodded tiredly and followed after Kagome.
“Inspector Price, may we do the interview tomorrow?” Kagome asked. Jarred looked at her, and then at the Colonel who looked ready to fall asleep standing up. “Of course General, try to get a good night's sleep.” He said. Kagome smiled tiredly and walked over to Maria. “Hey, can I steal your car?” She asked. “Nonsense, you are in no condition to be driving Kagome.” Maria said. “Ross, I am in no mood to fight with you. Just give me the keys to your damn car.” Kagome said. Armstrong walked up to them and lifted Kagome and Roy into his arms. “I shall run you both home then come back here to finish the investigation.” He said. “But what about Yusuke, Hiei, Kurama, and Kuwabara; you can't just leave them out here.” Kagome said. “We have room for all four of them in the car to take to your house, or we can just get them rooms at the hotel.” Riza said. Kagome looked at Hotel Perfect and decided that wasn't somewhere she wanted to be close to in the morning when she went there in the morning to make sure they were ready for another interview with Inspector Price. “Drop them off at my house.” Kagome said. Maria, Denny, and Riza nodded.
“Ready?” Armstrong asked. Kagome and Roy nodded as he took off at a sprint to Kagome's house. After a couple minutes he arrived at Kagome's house. She unlocked the door and walked inside with Armstrong in tow. “I don't think it would be a good idea to leave Colonel Mustang by himself tonight.” Armstrong said. “Good idea, just put him on the couch for now.” Kagome said. Armstrong set Roy on the couch and saluted to Kagome, who returned the salute. “I will see you both in the morning.” He said walking out of her house. Kagome turned and walked into the kitchen to get something to eat. Deciding that she really didn't want to eat what she had she walked out of the kitchen and back into the living room noticing that Roy was missing. *Knock, knock, knock* She sighed and opened the door for the Reikai Tentai. “Got a big enough house?” Kuwabara asked. (A.N. The house looks just like Tucker's.) “Sometimes I wonder that myself.” Kagome said leading them upstairs. “Here you go, decide who gets what room. They should suit you.” Kagome said walking down the hallway. The four of them grabbed a door handle and opened the door content with their rooms. Yusuke's was green, Hiei's black, Kuwabara's blue, and Kurama's earthy colors.
Kagome opened her room door and found Roy lying on her King Sized bed wrapped in the blankets. “What do you think you're doing?” Kagome asked. Roy didn't answer her but kept staring at the wall. She raised her eyebrow at him before grabbing some sweat pants and a t-shirt and went to change in the bathroom. “Good night boys!” Kagome yelled down the hallway. She strained to hear something but only heard snoring. Kagome giggled and walked back into her room. As she crawled into bed she felt Roy's arm wrap around her waist and bring her closer to his chest. “Don't leave me too.” He whispered into her hair. “Never.” Kagome said. She placed her arm over his and waited for sleep to claim her.
Roy woke with a start in the middle of the night. Wiping his face with his hand he felt something lying on his chest. He looking down he felt his face heat up. Sometime during the night they had moved from their original position to the one they were in now. Kagome's head rested on his chest with his left arm draped across her waist. Gently lifting her head he placed it on her pillow before slipping his arm from under her body and getting out of the bed. `Maybe a late night snack will help everything.' Roy thought walking out of the room. Quietly he walked down the hall and down the stairs to the kitchen. He didn't notice Hiei staring at him as he walked past his door. `Hn, stupid human doesn't know when someone's watching him.' Hiei thought, uncrossing his legs and following after Roy. “Maybe I should have a pickle.” He said looking in the fridge. “What are you doing?” Hiei asked. “Looking for something to eat, you?” Roy asked taking a tub of ice cream out of the freezer. Hiei didn't answer but stared at Roy as he got two spoons and two bowls out.
Roy scooped some ice cream out and put it back in the freezer. Sliding a bowl down to Hiei he poked at his ice cream and sighed. “You going to eat that?” Hiei asked pointing to Roy's half melted ice cream. Roy came out of his stupor he slid his bowl down to Hiei who smiled like a little kid on Christmas. “Just out of curiosity, is it safe for you to have this?” Roy asked. Hiei looked up from licking the bowl clean and shook his head. “Okay making sure.” He said. `Perfect.' He thought rolling his eyes. “So what are you going to do about his death?” Hiei asked going to finish off Roy's bowl. Roy shrugged and turned back to look out the window. “I don't know, I should tell Gracia but then she might blame me for it.” He said standing up. “You and Kagome both should tell her, that way she can't put the blame on either of you.” Hiei said. “But the big question is how do we tell Edward?” Kagome asked coming into the kitchen. “You should be sleeping.” Roy said walking up to her and hugging her. “Yeah, but I heard voices and came to make sure everything was okay.” She said returning the hug. “You two lovebirds should get a room.” Hiei said looking in the freezer for more ice cream. “Hiei what are you looking for?” Kagome asked suspiciously. “Sweet snow.” Hiei said hugging the tub of ice cream when he found it. Kagome's left eyebrow twitched before grabbing the ice cream out of his grip. “Why isn't he allowed to have ice cream?” Roy asked. “He gets way too hyper. The last time he had some he streaked around Spirit World.” Kagome said shuddering at the thought. Roy shook his head before turning and going back up the stairs.
After much arguing Kagome successfully knocked Hiei out and drug him up the stairs and into his bedroom. Walking back to her room she felt tears prick at her eyes at the thought of never seeing Hughes again. Taking a deep breath and forcing the tears back she opened the door and walked over the bed. Climbing under the covers she lay on her back and turned her head to Roy, whose back was facing her, and saw his shoulders shake. Turning to face him she wrapped her arm around his waist and snuggled up to him. After a few minutes she felt him stop shaking and heard his breath even out. Closing her eyes she too followed him into the world of dreams and nightmares.
