Chapter Nine
Yusuke ran up the driveway when he felt Hiei's aura go nuts, he was moving at an insane speed. He didn't know what the fuck was wrong but it had to be something major to get Hiei that upset and he was certain it didn't have anything to do with him showing up. He tried the front door but it was locked. Cursing to himself at the delay he kicked the door in. He'd worry about fixing it later after he found out what was going on. He heard Hiei say Kagome's name and moved faster. There was little that could put that much emotion in the hybrid's voice and hearing it scared the hell out of him.
When he burst into her bedroom he saw Hiei kneeling on the floor cradling her gently. Yusuke doubted he had ever seen Hiei that pale before in his life, not even when the dragon had devoured him and he came back. "What the fuck is going on Hiei? What's wrong with her?" Yusuke ignored the glare Hiei tried to send his way, Kagome meant a lot to him and he'd be damned to hell and back if Hiei thought he was going to leave him out of the loop.
Hiei stood with Kagome in his arms and looked at Yusuke. He could see the man was concerned, perhaps just as concerned as he was. It was something to ponder later but for now there was something wrong with Kagome and he had no idea how to help her. He refused to sit there and let her die in his arms however. He could feel her body temperature lowering as the drug took a firmer hold on her. "I don't know but I'm going to find out." He set her down on the bed briefly and removed his cloak, wrapping it around her body for extra warmth. He picked her up again, kicking his own body temperature up several degrees to help keep her warm. Ignoring Yusuke he brushed past him on his way out the door and ran towards Kurama's house. Hiei knew that the Kitsune was likely to be on his way home from the office soon but he called for him mentally just in case he had plans to go elsewhere. 'Kurama!'
Kurama's head snapped up from the form he was looking at when he heard the shout. It was rare for Hiei to contact him using this method because along with the words came emotions. Youko was instantly yanked out of his slumber when a jolt of terror echoed through the connection. 'Hiei what's wrong?'
Hiei ran, pushing himself like he never had before. The scenery blurred past him, the wind was the only sign of his passing. He clutched Kagome to his chest tightly, they'd be at Kurama's house within ten minutes. Hopefully Kurama was close. 'Fox, you need to get your ass home now! There is something wrong with Kagome. I am headed to your place now.'
Kurama pushed himself away from his desk immediately and grabbed his briefcase. He passed his secretary and told her that he was going home early. 'I'm leaving work now, describe what's wrong with her.' It was times like this that Kurama was thankful he had chosen a house nearby the office instead of putting some distance between him and the city. Depending on traffic he could be home in ten minutes though it was still likely that Hiei would beat him there.
Hiei cursed inwardly, Kurama hadn't left yet and he was only about five minutes from the Kitsune's house. His grip tightened on her further, she had begun to shiver violently though Hiei didn't know if it was from the chill she was experiencing or if it was caused by something else. 'She's unconscious Kurama, I can't wake her up. She's also shaking badly and her temperature is dropping.' He did his best to maintain his calm even though he knew she was beginning to slip from him. He tried to touch her mind but all he met was blackness.
Kurama frowned as he drove towards his house, she hadn't shown any signs of being ill when he had been there earlier though he had a feeling this wasn't caused by a normal illness. 'Hiei did you see what happened to cause this or was she out when you found her?' He was close now and even from here he could feel Hiei's agitated ki. He wouldn't be surprised if Koenma put in an appearance to find out what the hell was going on. Even stranger was that he felt Yusuke's as well, approaching at a high rate of speed.
Hiei landed on the balcony outside of Kurama's house and threw the sliding glass doors open, letting himself into the bedroom. 'No, she was writing and then she just fell to the floor. Dammit Kurama can't you drive any faster?' Hiei laid he on the bed and then crawled up next to her when she started convulsing violently. His arms wrapped around her in an attempt to keep her still. 'She's having seizures Kurama!'
"Fuck!" Kurama swore as he pulled up into the driveway nearly hitting Yusuke in the process. They didn't bother with the pleasantries as Kurama jumped out of the car and ran to the front door. It was opened in a matter of moments and they both hurried into the bedroom where they knew Hiei to be. Kurama took one look at Kagome and swore again. Youko was doing much the same, telling Kurama if he let her out of his sight again he would find a way to kick his ass. "Hiei she needs to go to the hospital."
Hiei glared at Kurama and held onto her tighter, he was no fool. He knew that if something wasn't done for her now she wouldn't make it to the hospital, her heartbeat was beginning to have irregularities. "We don't have time Kurama, do something for her!"
"Hiei I don't know what she did to cause this! If I give her the wrong thing it could kill her anyway!" Kurama didn't even want to think about Kagome dying but it was a very real possibility they had to consider. If she did there would be no second chances for her, it would break every rule in place for Koenma to bring her back since it would be a suicide case.
Yusuke was tired of being ignored and he was pissed that this was even happening to begin with. He stalked up to Kurama and shoved two pill bottles in his hand, one empty and the other mostly full. "If I was to wager a guess that's what your dealing with." He threw her diary on the table, they'd look at it later. He wanted to choke Hiei for leaving him like that but maybe it was for the better that he did. He had almost rushed out after him but then he had spotted the diary on the floor and picked it up. What he had read in just a few short seconds chilled him to the bone. Immediately he searched the room looking for anything at all that he thought would cause this. His search ended in the bathroom seeing the empty pill bottle. With the objects in hand he had raced off after Hiei, knowing exactly where he would go.
Kurama looked at the pill bottles and frowned, he wasn't a pharmacist but he had studied enough during his college classes. They had covered Tricyclic Antidepressant Overdose briefly in one of his courses that he knew of the symptoms and what the basics of treatment were. With that knowledge he could begin to try and stabilize her. "This will help, thank you." Immediately he set to work, pulling various seeds out and working furiously. The problem was that everything he could give her would have to be swallowed orally and with her being unconscious she she would not be able to take it normally. "Yusuke go into the kitchen and boil enough water for tea. Bring it here immediately when it's ready. I'll also need two cups while you are at it. Hurry!"
While Yusuke rushed off to do that Kurama began to crush a variety of herbs, mixing them together carefully. Youko was running through his mental list of additional plants that could possibly be of benefit but the majority of those were only found in the Makai and it had been a very long time since they had gone to collect any. It would seem that was an oversight that would need to be corrected in the near future. He refused to be caught unprepared for a situation like this again. "Of all the stupid things to do Kagome, what the hell were you thinking?"
Of course the only one who could answer that question was at the moment unable to. Kurama sighed, there was nothing to do but wait now. Yusuke should be finished soon though he still hadn't come up with how to get the tea in her. He looked at Hiei speculatively, there was one way to do it but it would have to be done slowly or she would inhale the liquid instead of swallowing it. It would be up to either him or Hiei to give it to her. No doubt if Yusuke touched her in such a way Hiei would decapitate him with how strung out he was at the moment. "Hiei when the tea is ready she's not going to be able to drink it on her own. One of the two of us will need to administer it by mouth, slowly or she will choke on it."
Hiei nodded slowly, he had already figured as much. They would just have to do it in between her seizures or she would choke anyway and they'd more than likely get bit in the process. "I'll do it. Go check on the idiot and see if it's ready yet." He watched Kurama leave and sighed, he didn't know what to do anymore. She told him to go and he did, giving her space and this had happened. He didn't want to let her out of his sight again, there was no telling what would happen next time. Assuming she lived through this one. He shook his head, he never believed he would be in this position. He had scoffed at those that had been too weak to go on, choosing the easy way out and ending their life but this time it was different. The situation had been difficult for him but he had been hardened to the realities of life, Kagome was still innocent in a lot of ways. He should have known that she wouldn't be able to handle the strain this had placed on her.
He didn't know that it was going to get any better either, Mukuro had sent a messenger to him two days before requesting his presence by the end of the week. She knew that he was having difficulties here in the Ningenkai and wouldn't interrupt him if it wasn't for a good reason. If it was something that important to have her pull him back to the Makai there was no telling how long he would be gone and once again it would leave Kagome alone. As loath as he was to admit it, he was going to have to ask for help with this one though he didn't think he'd receive any objections. Kurama would watch her while he could he was certain, the slack would have to fall on either Yusuke or Kuwabara. Kuwabara worked during the day though just like Kurama which meant during that time he would have to ask Yusuke if he would look after her. The question was did he trust him with her?
He growled as he realized he didn't have much choice in the matter, there simply wasn't anyone else that could spare the time to take care of her or that he trusted. Hell, if he knew what he was walking into going back to the Makai he'd take her with him but if there was trouble he'd rarely be around and they'd be dealing with another situation like this one. Kurama walked in the door a few minutes later and saw the look of aggravation on his face. Whatever he was going to ask died on his lips though as Yusuke in the room right behind him with the water Kurama needed. "You can set that down on the table Yusuke. Thank you."
Yusuke grunted an acknowledgment and did as he was instructed before turning to pay attention to the hybrid on the bed. He scowled when Hiei glared at him and directed his attention to the girl in Hiei's arms. His eyes softened as he looked at her, he should have gotten there sooner. Kurama had called him from his car when he was on his way back to work but he had gotten distracted. Keiko had called, returning his call from earlier about arranging to come pick up his things. He refused to go while she was there, not wanting to get into another argument. She refused to let him come get his stuff without her there and had gone so far as to change the locks so he couldn't. Neither was willing to budge on this issue and of course they had gotten into a huge fight over it again.
Hiei couldn't say he necessarily liked the way Yusuke was looking at her but even he had to admit that the man cared for her. He wouldn't allow anything to happen to her while he was gone, but some rules would have to be established before he left. If he came back and found that Yusuke had completed the mark with her then he would forcibly remove it along with Yusuke's head. Coming to a decision he spoke, his voice firm leaving no doubt that he was deadly serious about what he was about to say. "In two days time I will be returning to the Makai."
Kurama's head snapped up at Hiei's proclamation, he turned slowly from his task to turn golden eyes on the Apparition. He was finished anyway, all that was needed now was for the tea to cool. "You can't be serious Hiei!" He was going to end up choking the hybrid slowly with his rose whip before the day was out, he was certain.
Yusuke couldn't believe what he was hearing, after all this he was going to up and leave again? This was bullshit, unless the world was ending he'd be damned if the bastard up and left her again. ""What the fuck Hiei? Kagome is laying here dying and you are leaving to the Makai, again? How much more pain do you plan to put her through? I knew you were a cold hearted bastard but this fucking takes the cake!"
Hiei's growl filled the room, he was just about to cross the line and kill the ex-detective just to get him to shut his damned mouth. "Shut the hell up before I make you! I'm trusting the two of you to watch over her until I return." He fixed Yusuke with a hard glare before continuing. "I am well aware of your feelings toward Kagome and I'm warning you now, act on them and I will kill you slowly."
Yusuke bristled at this, what right did Hiei have to be making threats? As far as he was concerned he had lost that right when he vanished into the Makai the first time. He had been willing to step back and let them fix things before, but now he was having second thoughts. Hiei seemed to think that Kagome made a convenient girlfriend, only worth his time when he felt he needed her and he was sick of seeing her treated that way. "Why the fuck do you care what my intentions are with her anyway? You left her alone, making her think you hated her while she was carrying your child! You are the reason she is once again at death's door! I refuse to stand by and let a woman as beautiful and precious as she is waste away because the bastard she chose to give her love to hurts her!"
Hiei opened his mouth, the beginnings of a sharp retort on the tip of his tongue but stopped before the protest could be made. The fraction of a second it took for him to halt his movements was more than enough time for the ex-detective's words to sink in. He had to live with what had happened every single day. Did Yusuke really think he was that unfeeling? He had lost a child as well and now it looked like he could lose the one who had managed to capture his heart as well. His words were laced with bitterness as he locked gazes with Yusuke. "Don't you think I know that? I am well aware of what my actions have done, I don't need you to point them out to me. The fact still remains that she is mine and you will not touch her!" He broke eye contact and looked down to the girl cradled in his arms. " I'll make it up to her somehow. I just need the two of you to keep her safe, even from her self."
Yusuke nodded, he had already made up his mind to glue himself to her side if necessary until she recovered from this Hiei hadn't needed to ask them that, they would have done so anyway. "Fine with me. Does that mean we can keep her safe from you as well?"
Kurama frowned at the two of them, he didn't know how much longer Hiei would be willing to put up with before he resorted to bloodshed and by the look on his face he was dangerously close. This was exceedingly bad timing, he was under the impression that Mukuro knew how things were unsettled here, what could possibly be going on to make her pull him back like that? He decided to intervene in the argument before it escalated any further. "Are you sure that leaving is wise Hiei? Surely she can do without you for a few more days."
"You know I don't have a choice in these matters Kurama. She knows most of what is going on here, for her to summon me it has to be important." He had no desire to leave though he was sure that it would be impossible to convince Yusuke of that. Kurama was a bit easier, he knew how Mukuro was and about his responsibilities. Kagome most likely wouldn't understand but there wasn't anything that he could do to help that. "I'd much rather stay here but I cannot. I will return as soon as I possibly can however."
Kurama sighed, it was true. When Enki took over ruling the Makai it was mandated that the losers of the tournament take over the responsibilities of patrolling the border as well as specific jobs he did not have the time to handle such as local uprisings. If Hiei were to refuse a direct order like that a bounty could be placed on his head and that was a problem they couldn't deal with right now. "Alright Hiei, she can stay here, I have the room. Yusuke if you would, you can watch her during the day while I am at work. In the evenings I will watch her and at night Youko says he volunteers. She'll have constant supervision then."
Seeing agreement from the other two he turned to the tea that had been steeping and tested it. The smell and color was right as was the temperature, it was time to give it to Kagome and then pray for the best. "Okay Hiei, one of us is going to have to feed this to her a small amount at a time while the other holds her in place in case she has another seizure. Small amounts or she will choke on it, which would you rather do?" Kurama didn't bother to suggest Yusuke do either job, Hiei was stretched thin enough as he was.
Hiei didn't like the idea of anyone else giving her the tea but at the same time it wasn't something that he had done before. He knew there were risks of her inhaling the liquid and it made him nervous. Kurama on the other hand was certain to have had experience doing this sort of thing before. He knew that he had to make a decision soon though. Better Kurama then the fool standing next to him, Hiei was almost positive that Yusuke would screw it up somehow and drown her. "You do it fox, I'm already holding her. There's no need to move her if we don't have to."
Kurama nodded and brought the two cups of tea over and set them on the nightstand. He knew that he was going to hear it from Youko later about volunteering themselves for this. While it was true he cared for Kagome he didn't feel the same brotherly attraction that his human counterpart did. Kurama knew that irritated Youko to no end and while he wouldn't even suggest he attempt something with her now, later he was sure to hear it about him teasing Youko with the taste of her knowing that nothing could ever come of it. Neither of them were willing to hurt Hiei or Kagome like that but it still didn't help lessen the kitsune's desires.
Both Yusuke and Hiei watched as Kurama began the slow process of giving her the tea. Hiei was managing to fight off his jealousy issues fairly well because even though he was touching her in what would be considered an inappropriate way under any other circumstances, he did not smell even the slightest trace of arousal. Yusuke on the other hand was standing there with his hands clenched at his sides. It was hard enough to see Hiei holding her, keeping her safe. He wanted to be the one to do it, but it wasn't his place. Add the fact that Kurama's lips were on hers and he wanted to punch something badly.
Hiei looked up from watching what Kurama was doing and looked to the Toushin, he looked positively ready to kill and that thought made him uneasy. They didn't have time for his petty temper tantrums and already he could feel the man's youki rising. No doubt Kurama could as well but he showed no signs of stopping. Kagome on the other hand even unconscious could feel him powering up and her powers were flaring in warning. "Dammit you fool calm down or go outside before you kill us all. You claim to want to help her yet you stand there torturing her with your youki. Lock it down or get out. Your choice."
Yusuke stared at him in disbelief for several long seconds, he couldn't believe Hiei had just had the nerve to say he was hurting her. Yet one look at the girl and he knew it was true, she was tensing up and her aura was beginning to rise in response to his. "Fuck you, you cold hearted bastard." Yusuke turned around and stormed out of the room. He needed to get away from Hiei before he decided to beat the hell out of him. It didn't take him long before he was out the back door slamming it behind him. He knew Kurama was likely to take him to task for that one but at the moment he didn't give a damn.
A large tree ended up taking the brunt end of his anger as his fists slammed into it repeatedly. It wasn't fair! What the hell had Hiei done to deserve having her? Absolutely nothing! Yusuke was certain Hiei would only wind up hurting her more before he was through with her and there wouldn't be enough of her left to begin to pick up the pieces. He wanted to be able to tell her she deserved better, that he could treat her better than Hiei ever could but he knew it would do no good. She was loyal, too loyal in this case but his opinion didn't change things. The night they shared together was special, even if she didn't realize that it was him. Couldn't she see how much he loved her? He'd given up everything for her that night.
Yusuke was torn. He didn't regret the night of passion he had shared with her in the least; however he did regret that it had led her to the place she was now. He had long since harbored feelings for her and the night they shared proved to him that he did indeed love her. He loved everything about her and the accidental, though not regretted, marking of her was proof enough to him of his feelings. Would she take it that way though? Would she know the significance of his mark since Hiei had never bothered with so much as a courting mark? He realized, while taking out another tree, that it didn't matter if she believed him or not. Hiei be damned, he would prove it to her. He would help her heal any way he was able and then he would show her what it meant to be loved. He had his doubts that the apparition would bother returning after this so called summons of his was over with. He wouldn't allow her to sit there wasting away on someone who was just going to keep stringing her along.
