Chapter Eight

Kameko rushed into the room and startled Kagome by throwing her arms around her. Kameko had never been so damned scared in her life as when she saw her fall. The thought that she could have died had haunted her the entire day and now when she finally got a chance to see her friend awake and looking at her she lost her composure. Kagome returned the hug hesitantly and tried to smile when Kameko pulled away. "It's nice to see you too."

Kameko wiped her eyes with the back of her sleeve as Kurama took up a position on the opposite side of the bed. Her voice was lightly scolding now that she was sure Kagome would be okay. "Why didn't you say anything? I thought you knew that you could tell me anything!"

Kagome flinched at the accusation. No doubt Kameko was taking it personally that she hadn't been told but she hadn't wanted to say anything until everything was settled. It wasn't a personal slight, it was just the way it was. Kurama picked up on the look and smoothly stepped in, there was no reason to berate the girl for keeping her pregnancy a secret. "I'm sure she had her reasons for not saying anything. Now is not the time to be worrying over such things." He turned his attention to Kagome and brushed her bangs back. "How are you feeling?"

Kagome shrugged, she really wasn't feeling much of anything though she suspected it had to do with the iv running through her arm. A nurse had come in and changed the bag, saying that they were giving her something that would help her sleep. She was already feeling lethargic and really couldn't focus much anymore. "Kay I guess, why'd you come?"

Kurama could tell that she was out of it and didn't take offense to her question. She was probably feeling quite vulnerable at the moment and what Hiei had told them earlier was taken into account. He wasn't about to let her push him away like the hybrid had done. He would be there while the other two figured out how to pull their heads out of their asses. Youko was a constant presence in the back of his mind volunteering to assist them in their endeavor. "We came because we were worried about you Kagome. We know what happened and I want you to know that I'm here for you."

Kagome nodded, not quite sure of what to say. He was an extremely busy man and had his own life to worry about, she wasn't about to burden him with her problems as well. She'd suck it up like she always did pull through. Or not, she really didn't care anymore but she wasn't about to tell them that. If she did Kagome knew that they would never leave her alone and give her a moments peace. "I'll be fine K'rama, just tired now." She stifled a yawn behind her hand, looking up when Yusuke walked into the room followed by Kuwabara. She looked at them uncertainly, not sure of what to say.

"Hey girl, you doing okay?" Yusuke didn't like the look she gave him, it was as if she was afraid to even be in the same room as he was.

"Yeah, I'm fine. Really. All I want to do is sleep though" Kagome knew that she wasn't going to last much longer and visiting hours were probably coming to an end anyway. She'd be able to find peace in sleep and hopefully be able to forget, for at least a little while. They seemed to take the hint, everyone picked up their belongings and said their goodbyes with the promise to visit the next day. Once the door closed behind them Kagome allowed her mask to fall, giving into the sadness that threatened to consume her. As she closed her eyes and gave herself over to sleep she never noticed Hiei sitting just outside her window, faithfully keeping watch over her while keeping the nightmares at bay.

Yusuke walked into the house and dropped his keys on the table. He was exhausted and wanted nothing more than to take a shower but fate was not with him that day. As soon as he walked into the living room he noticed Keiko sitting there on the couch looking at him with a blank expression. She had been reading one of her romance novels and carefully placed a bookmark in it to hold her place. "So Yusuke, you never told me how the party went. How was it? You came home pretty early this morning."

Yusuke yawned and stretched, he knew that he had to tell her but he was too damned tired and that would more than likely be a long, uphill fight trying to convince her that he hadn't instigate it and then even harder to get her to forgive him. Assuming he wanted to stay with her, he still wasn't sure. Kagome had opened doors in his heart that he never knew existed and he wasn't certain he wanted to close them again. "Oh you know it was a party. I'll tell you all about it tomorrow if you want, I'm dead tired."

Keiko's eyes narrowed at his back as he began to walk away from her. She was giving him his chance to come clean and he was blowing her off. She kept her voice light as she spoke again, keeping an eye on him to gage his reaction. "I saw Kanaye today. He said that party was pretty wild." Her eyes narrowed further when he stopped in the middle of the hallway, not bothering to turn around.

Yusuke's mind raced hearing that innocent little statement that held a world of meaning. 'Oh fuck me.' He barely dared to breath as he waited for her to say something more. He knew that it was coming without a doubt, Keiko could never hold her temper for very long and if she knew she was already pushing some sort of record. He wondered if he started running now would he make it out the window before she caught and killed him. As the seconds ticked by he could feel his third death hanging over his head. 'This is gonna be bad. Real bad.'

Keiko slammed her book down on the table and stood up. She had given him a chance to explain himself, just in case Kanaye had been mistaken or lying. But he refused to take it, he was standing there like a damned statue. He wouldn't even face her, he knew he was caught and he was probably trying to think up some damned lie to save his ass. "Dammit Yusuke! I know why you didn't come home until this morning. Hell, everyone at that party knows why!"

Yusuke sighed and turned around knowing that Keiko deserved an explanation. One look at her face told him she was about to knock him into next week at the very earliest and he had better talk fast before she snapped. "Keiko it's not how you think."

"Do you honestly expect me to believe that? Kanaye told me exactly how your night went Yusuke. So, was she good?" Keiko was literally shaking with rage. How dare he try and play it down like that! "I'm sure she was, she had to be if everyone in that house was able to hear the two of you. Tell me Yusuke, how long has this been going on? Does Hiei know or is he in on it too? Do you take turns with him Yusuke? I thought she was my friend but she turned out be a slut that would sleep with you. I never would have believed that you'd be with her of all people!"

Any thoughts of pleading with Keiko to just listen to him flew out the window when she said that. Kagome was blameless in this mess and he was not about to listen to Keiko talk about her that way. "Now wait just a damn minute Keiko! None of this was planned. Kagome and Hiei were fighting and one of her 'friends' thought she needed to lighten up, so she spiked her drink with Ketamine. I was already drunk and after I finished her drink, we both were under the influence. I'm sorry you found out the way you did, but you have no right to talk about her like that! She just lost her baby because of that 'friend' of hers."

Keiko glared at him even harder. Kagome would have told her if she was pregnant so why the hell was he making this shit up? "You are such a pathetic liar Yusuke. Do you really expect me to believe that? Kagome would have told me if she was pregnant so try again."

Yusuke ran his hand through his hair in aggravation. What was it going to take to prove to her what had happened. He'd be damned if he was going to take her down to the hospital to see for herself. Seeing Keiko was the last thing Kagome needed. "If you don't believe me call the fucking hospital and verify that she is there, she was admitted this morning. I've been down there all damned day waiting to see if she was going to live. She damned near died hemorrhaging!"

"Fine I will!" Keiko stormed over to the phone and grabbed the phone book. She was going to get to the bottom of this if it was the last thing she did. Finally she found the number and made the call, verifying that Kagome was indeed a patient there but they wouldn't give her any information as to why she was there or her condition. It still didn't prove that they had been drugged. "Okay so she is in the hospital. That doesn't answer my question of how long this has been going on!" A horrible thought struck her, Yusuke had known that Kagome was pregnant. "You knew. You knew she was pregnant and you didn't say anything. You could have told me that's where you were going but you didn't! Why? The baby was yours wasn't it?" She didn't think she could take much more of this.

Yusuke couldn't believe what it was he was hearing. She still believed that there was some secret affair going on that they had hidden from her. Anger flowed through him, if she was thinking this she never trusted him to begin with. His fist slammed into the wall going clear through it. His voice was harsh, his anger finding an outlet in her. "Are you fucking serious Keiko? You really think I would cheat on you intentionally? No, the baby wasn't mine... she was Hiei's. That is what their fight was about. He never wanted children and he deserted her. That is the only reason she was even at that fucking party!"

Keiko took an involuntary step back when he pulled his hand back out and turned towards her. He snorted in disgust at the gesture. She knew that he would never hit her and still she was acting like she was afraid of him. He'd put up with this bullshit for long enough, it was time for him to leave. "Thank you Keiko. You helped me realize something just now. You never really loved me, did you? I know you didn't because you have no faith in me. You were all too willing to believe what Kanaye had to say and yet you stand here accusing me of lying. Me! And we have known each other for how long? At least I know now that you will never trust me... before I did something stupid like marrying you."

Yusuke stormed out of the room and into the bedroom, ignoring the look of pained disbelief that crossed her face. He was done with this conversation, he was done with her. Never in his life had he thought that she would be like this. Mistakes happen, they were supposed to be able to move past them yet she wasn't even willing to try. He snatched up one of the suitcases and threw several changes of clothes in it. He'd come back for the rest of his shit later when she was in class or something. When he reappeared in the living room she was sitting on the couch again, tears streaming down her face but this was one time they wouldn't work with him. He snatched his keys back up and walked out the door, slamming it behind him. He got in his car and drove over to Kuwabara's place. He should be able to stay there for the night, he'd start looking for a new place to live in the morning.

A couple of weeks had passed and then some, Kagome had been released from the hospital with strict instructions to take the medication she had been given. Dr. Sasaki had made an appointment for her with a Psychiatrist saying that she wasn't coping with her loss well enough on her own and that she needed help. They had prescribed two antidepressants in addition to her antibiotics. Kagome stared at the pill bottles in her hand and frowned. She hated the things, she truly did. The bottle opened in her hand easily. No doubt Kurama would arrive soon to check on her just as he had for the past several days. Two pills fell out into her palm yet she made no move to take them. She just didn't care anymore, let the world go on without her. She heard a knock on the front door but she already knew who it was, she had felt him coming. She walked into the bathroom, dropping the pills in the toilet and flushing it. That way if Kurama decided to check the number of pills in the bottle the right amount would be missing.

Once that was done she went back into the bedroom and laid down on the bed. There was no need to go let him in, he had his own key now. She sighed as she heard the front door open, of course he wouldn't leave her alone. It was funny, he was the only one who had been checking on her near constantly. She hadn't seen Hiei since the day he pulled her out of her own mind. She had no doubt that he went back to the Makai, he had done his job and had no reason to stay. Even his cloak was gone now, most likely he retrieved it while she was hospitalized. She clutched her pillow tightly at the thought and closed her eyes.

Kurama made his way up the stairs, he wasn't surprised that she hadn't answered. She had yet to meet him at the door, the first day he had come over he ended up picking the lock and letting himself in. He knocked quietly on the bedroom door before walking in and shutting it quietly behind him. To the average person she would have appeared asleep but he wasn't fooled, her breathing pattern was too rapid for that. "Come now Kagome. You should know by now that I won't be fooled, so may as well quit pretending to be asleep."

Kagome shifted slightly, she hadn't been trying to pretend to be asleep she had been hoping that he would go away. This was getting old very fast and yet she knew that he wouldn't leave her alone. She felt him sit on the edge of the bed before he laid a hand on her shoulder. Finally she spoke, her voice void of emotion. "I'm fine Kurama, you don't have to keep coming over to check on me. Really, I appreciate it but I'm sure you have better things to do with your time."

And it was that statement alone that told him just how bad off she was. She'd never objected to him coming over before and he wouldn't take it personally. Still, maybe a call to the doctor would be necessary. It seemed like her medications weren't doing much good, perhaps they needed to be adjusted. "Have you been taking your pills Kagome?" He sighed as he got no response from her aside from a nod of her head. He didn't know what to do to help her, he'd never had to deal with something like this before.

"You need to get up Kagome, I brought lunch with me. I know you haven't eaten either." He stood up and opened up the bag of food he brought, and carried a plate of food over to her. She hadn't moved yet and it looked like she wasn't going to either. He set the plate down on the end table by the bed and pulled the pillow away from her ignoring her objections. "I don't want to hear it, you're going to eat and I'm not leaving until you do."

Kagome sat up and glared at him for all she was worth, she didn't need a damned babysitter! What irked her worse was the slight grin she got in return, as if he found her anger amusing. She should have known that he would act like this, he could be worse than her mother when he set his mind to it. She crossed her arms over her chest as he grabbed a second plate for himself. "Kurama I'm not hungry. I'll eat later."

Kurama shook his head, he knew she was eternally stubborn but then again so was he. He suppressed a chuckle at Youko's suggestion of letting him take over for a few minutes. He seriously doubted Kagome would appreciate finding herself being bound and force fed though he was sure that Youko would be more than happy to take on the task. He knew he had pissed her off by doing this but in his opinion anger was better than the apathy she seemed to be stuck in. "No Kagome, you'll eat now. Humor me on this, at least then Youko can settle down and give me some peace in my head."

Kagome rolled her eyes at this, it would figure that Youko was giving him a hard time over this. Fine, the sooner that she ate the sooner he would go. She picked up her chopsticks and begin picking at her food. Her stomach protest at the thought of having something shoved into it but she had an idea of what Youko was saying and she had no desire to experience any of his organic bondage for any reason whatsoever. She sighed knowing that she was going to be lucky if she didn't vomit after this. "You win Kurama." It was only with great reluctance that she began to eat.

Kurama knew she wouldn't eat it all and as predicted when the plate was half gone she set it back down on the table. "Thank you Kagome, you know we worry about you. We just want to see you happy again." He wasn't expecting a response so he wasn't surprised when he didn't receive one. She merely grabbed her pillow again and hugged it to her. As much as he hated to say it, they weren't really getting anywhere with her. None of them knew what to do anymore, Hiei watched her from a distance and asked Kurama how she was when he spoke with her. Yusuke was just as concerned, he spoke with him daily as well but was staying away from her out of respect for Hiei. The apparition had made it abundantly clear that he intended to resume their relationship where they had left off once she was willing to accept him again.

Personally Kurama thought that he should be here with her, things were never going to get better if they didn't work at it but Hiei disagreed saying she needed to come to terms with what had happened before they moved forward and there was no convincing him otherwise. But now, with how she was slipping away from them things were going to have to change. If Hiei wouldn't come to her then maybe Yusuke could help. Kagome had told him one day that she was sure that both Yusuke and Keiko were furious at her for what had happened. She felt responsible for ending their relationship. Kurama knew Keiko was still furious over what had happened though she really didn't blame Kagome once it had been explained to her fully. She did however blame Yusuke, saying that he should have been able to keep from touching her but he just hadn't wanted to. Truthfully he didn't think they would ever reconcile their differences, there was too many hurt feelings between them.

Maybe if Yusuke were to come over, he could put part of Kagome's fears to rest. Kurama was more certain than ever that Yusuke had feelings for the girl, if Hiei wasn't willing to step up to the plate and help Kagome get passed this then Yusuke would be the next best choice. Kurama decided then and there that he would give him a call as soon as he left. He said nothing of this to Kagome though, knowing that she'd object the moment the idea was brought up. "Well Kagome, my lunch break is about up so I have to go. I'll be back later tonight, I want to see you out of bed then."

Kagome nearly sighed with relief knowing that he was leaving but then groaned when he said he'd be back tonight. "Guess I'll see you then. Bye Kurama." She waited until he left the room and she heard the front door shut once again. She got up out of bed and sat in the window looking out over the lake. Memories of the many times she had sat here with Hiei flooded back to her and she let the tears course down her cheeks unchecked. A slight flash of movement out of the corner of her eye made her turn her head. Had Hiei come back? She allowed her powers to flare slightly, searching him out but found no trace of him. "Figures it was just my imagination." Her head rested against the glass for several long minutes as she stared blankly at the trees outside. He would never come back, he had no reason to, none at all.

She was tired, so damned tired of it all. She tried to think of one reason she should continue to fight but none would come to her. Inuyasha was dead, Hiei was gone, Yusuke's life was ruined and he probably hated her for it. Her own family had moved on in the time that she had moved away, not that she blamed them for that. They all had lives to lead. Kurama had seen fit to call her mother and tell her what had happened but she couldn't come out. Grandfather was sick and she couldn't leave Souta to care for him. So instead she sent her love and told her to get better. The one time she needed her mother the most and she wasn't available. Her eyes fell to the pill bottles that were sitting innocently on the table. It would be so easy, it was said that overdosing on antidepressants was an easy way to go. You just went to sleep and didn't wake up. She could believe it, very easily in fact. The few times she had taken them they had made her unbelievably tired.

She got up her spot in the window and picked the two bottles up. Each one contained a months worth of medication, more than enough to end it all. She carried them into the bathroom and filled a glass with water. She had always despised taking pills but this time was different. The tops opened easily, spilling the contents into her hand. She had time, it would be hours before anyone came to check on her. By the time that happened it should be too late. She swallowed them down two at a time until one bottle was gone. She already felt like vomiting, her stomach protesting it's contents. She eyes the second bottle of pills, there was no way she was going to be able to swallow them down as well. If she tried then all the word she had put into forcing the first set would be for nothing. She made her way back into the bedroom and sat down on the bed. She knew it would take a little while for the pills to work so she reached under the bed, her hand searching for her diary.

Kagome slid the pen free and opened the book to the last page. Briefly she wondered whether or not she should be writing her goodbyes in the book but then decided that it really didn't matter. Let them read it if they wanted, she didn't care anymore. She put the pen to paper and began writing her goodbyes and apologies. To Hiei she spoke of her love and told him for a final time that she was sorry for what had happened. She would look after their little girl once she was gone and she would be certain to tell Aiko about the father she never got to meet. To Kurama she spoke of the fun times that they had together at one time and thanked him for trying to help her. This wasn't his fault, there was no helping the lost which was what she considered herself now. For Yusuke she spoke of her regrets, how she never meant to ruin what he had with Keiko and that she hoped one day he would be able to forgive her. She continued writing, thanking Kuwabara and the others for being there for her. The final paragraph was to her family, telling them how much she loved them and wished them well.

The pen stilled, she had run out of things to say. Now all that was left was the wait, she knew it wouldn't be long now. As it was her vision was beginning to blur. Her eyes closed as she stifled a yawn. The book fell from her hand and dropped to the floor. She stared at it for several long moments before bending down to pick it up. Her vision blurred once more before she fell to the floor. She pushed up on her hands once before giving up and remaining where she was. The floor was fine, she didn't need to lay on the bed. She was comfortable where she was. Her eyes slid closed again and this time they didn't reopen.

~*~

Hiei had been watching her since Kurama left and didn't think anything of it when Kagome went into the bathroom for a while. He settled back against the tree and waited for her to come out once more. He sighed in aggravation, somehow his life went from perfect to fucked up in the time it took to blink it seemed. He wanted nothing more than to go in there and take up where they had left off, as much as possible at least but he knew that it wasn't possible at this point in time. He hated seeing her cry like that, knowing he was the cause of a great part of it. He wanted to dry those tears and tell her that things would be fine. But he stopped himself certain that if he tried she would send him away again.

When she came back out she noticed how she pulled out her book of thoughts, or a diary as she termed it. He had often wondered what it was that she wrote in there but never satisfied his curiosity choosing instead to respect her need for privacy. Whatever it was she was writing this time was something painful for her, even from this distance he could see her tears drop onto the paper. He scowled as he felt Yusuke's energy coming closer. The man had told him he wouldn't come near her until he and Kagome had things worked out between them but it looked like Yusuke was going to go back on his word. He would watch him for now, but if he made so much as the hint of a pass at Kagome the man would lose his head. He turned his attention back to her, waiting to see if she would even allow him into the house.

Hiei blinked when the pen slipped from her hand and she didn't even seem to notice it. The book followed shortly after which seemed to snap her out of her stupor. He watched her closely, she seemed.. off somehow. He knew something was wrong as soon as she fell off the bed. He was already making his way towards her when she dropped back to the floor the final time. His heart was racing as he threw open the window and made his way to her side. He touched her gently and said her name, his voice rough with worry. "Kagome?" He turned her over and pulled her closer. Her breathing was shallow, much too shallow and he could hear her heart rate becoming frantic.
