Chapter Seven
Kagome stared at the wall, lost in her thoughts as Kurama and Kameko looked at her helplessly. Each of them had tried talking to her ever since she had woken up but none of them had managed to get any kind of response. She barely breathed, her skin was deathly pale except for the deep purple bruise that graced her cheek. The doctor had been there when she awoke, telling her everything that she needed to know and then left her. Her hand continued to rest on her stomach, it was strange how she couldn't feel any pain. Pain would tell her that the man had spoken the truth. Pain would force her to accept it and try to move on. But there was none and as such she refused to believe it.
She had vaguely been aware of her friends coming into the room. Immediately they had expressed how sorry they were. She didn't want to hear it, they knew nothing. Her child was safe. There was no reason for her to be here, she would be fine. She retreated further into herself, maybe if she ignored them long enough they would go away and leave her alone. She imagined herself in a peaceful house back in the Feudal Era where she cradled a small girl child with beautiful red eyes to her chest. So long as she stayed there, nothing could touch her, there would be no more pain.
Kurama was at a loss, he didn't know how to help her. He had only felt this useless once before and that was when his mother laid in a bed similar to the one Kagome was in. She was completely unresponsive now, even when he touched her. She just continued to stair at the wall. He wasn't surprised that she was taking the loss so hard, she had always worn her heart on her sleeve and though he knew she kept it hidden, there was no doubt she loved this child from the moment she learned of it's existence. Anger welled up in him, this should have never happened. Hiei shouldn't have left like he had, Yusuke should have watched over her more carefully than he had. Shit like that happened at parties all the time and Yusuke had been to enough of them to know this.
He knew they were coming, and quick if he was tracking their youki correctly. He stood up from his chair and cast one last glance to Kagome he took her limp hand in his own and gave it a gentle squeeze. "I'll be back Kagome. I promise, everything is going to be alright." He released her and turned, walking to the door. Kameko looked up at him, obviously wondering where he was going. "Stay with her, there is someone I need to speak to." Without waiting for a response he left the room and made his way down the hallway. They were much closer now and by the way they had slowed they knew he was coming. 'Good, let them wonder. They will not be permitted to harm her again.'
Kurama could see that they were waiting for him as he left the main building of the hospital. He could see the nervousness in Yusuke's eyes as they locked gazes. He was a master at reading peoples emotions, no matter how well they attempted to hide it. They both needed a lesson in what would happen when you fucked with a kitsune's family and he considered Kagome to be his sister. As he walked further away from the building he ran a hand through his hair, a rose appearing between his fingertips. He smiled coldly as both of them shifted slightly at the gesture. They each knew what it meant and they both knew he was furious.
When he came within speaking distance he stopped and fixed each of them with a cold glare. It looked as if both of them had managed to score a few hits on each other earlier. That wasn't his concern anyway, they were both alive and standing in front of him. It was time for them to understand exactly how thin of ice they both stood on. "I'm only going to say this once so listen well. Kagome needs our support so if either of you have anything to say to each other say it now. I will not hesitate to remove either one of you if you upset her further. If it were up to me neither one of you would come near her again but I have no choice in this." Youko forced himself as close to the surface as he could without physically changing forms to let them know just who they were dealing with. "If either of you fools ever hurt her again, friendships be damned I will not hesitate to kill you both."
Both men bristled at his words but he no longer cared. They would heed his words or they would find out just why he had been so feared in the Makai. Satisfied he was not going to get an argument out of either one of them he turned and led them back into the hospital. They gained a few stares, no doubt because of the gashes that liberally adorned the two of them. However they proceeded unhindered to Kagome's room and stopped outside the doorway. Kurama turned to look at them, his voice low. "Kagome is taking this very hard so don't be surprised by how she is acting. We haven't been able to get her to look at us much less anything else."
Hiei's voice was subdued as he gazed at the kitsune, his expression unreadable. "Will she be okay?" He was worried how she would react to him being there, if she reacted at all. Would she scream and yell at him? He wouldn't blame her for hating him, he blamed himself for leaving her alone. If only he had wrapped up his business in the Makai faster.
Kurama sighed sadly and shook his head. "I really don't know Hiei, her body should recover but mentally I'm just not sure. If any of us will be able to reach her Hiei, it will probably be you. Just don't hurt her again, she doesn't deserve it." Nothing further was said as Kurama opened the door and let them go past.
Hiei's heart clenched as he looked at her. The last time he had seen her in this bad of shape was when he first met her and she was wandering the streets of the city dazed and covered in blood, her own as well as that of an unknown hanyou. He walked up to her slowly, waiting to see if she would notice him. As Kurama had warned though there was no reaction from the girl, she just continued staring at the wall. He looked to the others and fixed them with a hard stare. "Leave us."
Yusuke opened his mouth to protest but surprisingly Kameko elbowed him in the ribs harshly. "You heard him, lets go to the cafeteria." Kameko dragged him off behind her, leaving them alone with Kurama. She had been trying since Yusuke had left to get her friend to say something, anything and nothing had worked. It was now up to Hiei, if he couldn't do it then Kagome might never recover.
Kurama merely gave him a look but Hiei knew what it meant. The warning was unnecessary, he only wanted some time alone with her. It still hurt, knowing that she had been intimate with another, but he couldn't dwell on that right then. Perhaps after she had recovered he would explore his feelings more and they could go from there but for now, he had to bring her back. He had seen victims of trauma before do much the same thing that she was doing now and he knew what it meant. She was in denial and as long as she refused to accept it, she would be unreachable. It was up to him to reach out to her for as long as was necessary, eventually she would come back.
Hiei walked over into her line of vision and moved a chair right next to the bed. He sat there for several long moments staring into her eyes, hoping for any sign of recognition. He wasn't going to give up on her though. His hand slipped into one of hers, his thumb caressing it gently. "Kagome?" He started hesitantly, still not sure just what he was going to say. Conversation had never been his particular niche and apologizing was something he had never really done. He knew though, that now he would have to tell her he was sorry, his pride be damned. "Can you hear me? You need to come back Kagome. I can't tell you I am sorry if you aren't here to receive it."
'Kurama?' He called out mentally for his partner knowing full well that he was nearby and could hear him. He was surprised when the kitsune didn't respond to his call, instead choosing to come directly into the room.
He closed the door behind him quietly and looked to the girl on the bed and then Hiei. Kurama had hoped that his call meant that Kagome was showing some signs of improvement but if there was he could not see any. His should have known better than to get his hopes up. "What is it Hiei?"
"I need you to make sure no one comes in this room and disturbs us." Hiei purposefully ignored the raised eyebrow that statement earned him and continued. "She has gone within, I will have to use the Jagan in order to try bringing her out."
Kurama knew that it would be difficult to keep any of the hospital staff out of the room, especially since they needed to come in every so often to change her iv drip and check her vital signs. There had also been talk of sending a counselor in to try and talk to her, though he did not know when it would happen. "I will try Hiei, you do know the risk you are taking do you not?"
Hiei nodded, he was very well of the fact that Kagome could easily turn on him in this state and not realize who she was fighting. If that happened he was in danger of purification and he wouldn't be able to get out of her mind fast enough to stop her from destroying him. "I know, if she kills me so be it. I won't let her go without trying."
Kurama stared hard at him for a moment before turning and walking out the door. Unsaid went the danger to the girl herself, there was no telling what she would experience with the Jagan in her mind. She might not notice it at all but then again the implant was a creature of evil. It could bring her worst fears to life and they'd be worse off than when they started. Hiei slipped the ward covering the Jagan off and allowed the eye to open. It didn't take long for it to latch onto the girl, it had always taken an interest in her though Hiei knew it's feelings towards Kagome were malicious in nature.
It was going to be a fight the entire time he was in her mind to keep the Jagan from trying to harm her, but he was the implants master and it would bow to his will. It had no choice. He closed his eyes and seized control of the Jagan as it ripped past the flimsy mental barriers she had up. It only proved to him that she was slipping away, never had he seen her shields this weak before. The Jagan pulsed in displeasure at having it's freedom cut short and fought his hold. They would go no farther until this power struggle was settled.
Deep within her mind Kagome was relaxing peacefully, uncaring about the world outside. Time held no meaning in here and she was content to remain this way. Yet there was something nagging at her, something important and she couldn't quite place her finger on it. It felt as if something was coming, yet at the same time it felt familiar. She turned to the baby she had named Aiko. Her eyes reminder her so much of Hiei, her heart clenched painfully. He was gone now, she would have to learn to live with it. As long as she had Aiko she would be fine, she would learn to be happy again.
She picked the child up carefully and began to walk over to the window. She could see the Goshinboku from here and she could almost imagine Inuyasha laying there on his favorite branch. She knew that he would never rest there again however, his body long since buried at the base of the tree. He had received a mortal blow in the fight against Naraku though it did not take him out immediately. He had died in her arms after the fight, speaking words of love and regret that he hadn't told her sooner. For the longest time she had hated herself, knowing that he died because of her. If she had only been fast enough to move out of the way Inuyasha wouldn't have needed to put himself in the way of the tentacle that would have ended her life.
Kagome shook her head, dispelling the memories and continued gazing outside. Her eyes widened in confusion as the world she had built around herself began to shimmer in reaction something though she wasn't sure what. Suddenly it was all ripped away from her, the peace and tranquility was gone. In her arms Aiko stared up at her, her eyes dull and lifeless. Kagome sat the child down and backed away from her slowly, a look of horror on her face. Her hand flew to her mouth to stop her from screaming yet stopped when it came into her line of vision. It was covered in blood, the viscous liquid beginning to run down her arm. It was then that Kagome realized blood was pouring from her body and she fell to her knees screaming.
The sound echoed through the emptiness and reached Hiei, his eyes snapping open as he took in the desolation around him. Before it had been calm and peaceful, a place he would have enjoyed. But now it was a scene out of a nightmare. Blood was splattered liberally around him, pooling on the ground and covering the bark of the trees. The sky had turned dark and angry in response to the scream. Hiei knew he had to move quickly, he bolted forward uncaring of his surroundings. His only intent was to find Kagome and bring her back with him.
The sudden pain in his head drove him to his knees, images of the past couple of weeks being forced on him. Once more he was living the past, experiencing another's thoughts and emotions only this time it was Kagome's instead of Yusuke's. Certain images came to him, appearing in a never ending cycle. How he abandoned her, leaving her to think that he never cared. The strength of her emotions floored him, never had he felt anything like it before. Not even his constant anger could compare to the force of what she was projecting to him.
The scene shifted to when Yusuke had taken her to bed. Anger filled him when she accepted his touch so easily, he should have been the only one to ever touch her. He had been her first and he had sworn then that he would be her only lover. He nearly turned and left when her thoughts flooded him, the joy she felt by thinking he had returned to her and the promise that he would never leave her again. "She really did think it was me." His voice was soft, almost in disbelief that she had been telling him the truth. The love she projected while believed he was above her warmed him for several moments before he realized just how he had repaid her for her affections when he saw her the next morning. Would she ever be able to forgive him?
The Jagan pulsed in delight at the chaos that it had managed to cause and pushed at it's barriers even further. It delighted in causing this pure being pain and it's master was distracted enough that it could continue. The eye latched on to another painful memory, bringing it to the front. The death of her child. Hiei watched as she came down the stairs the final time and the pain she felt ripped through his body as if it were his own. He stood their unable to move as he watched her crash through the railing, falling harshly on the table down below. His ribs ached as he felt hers crack and he fought off the darkness as her head collided with the hard wood.
When he saw the blood pooling beneath her he managed to snap the bonds that had held him in place and rushed to her side. He knew that these were just images of what had happened yet still he cradled her limp form to his own. He was the cause of this, he may not have been the one to give her the drug but he was still the one who started this all. He stroked he hair as she continued to lay unresponsive in his arms, his whispered apology falling on deaf ears.
Hiei snarled when she was abruptly ripped away from him and another memory took her place. This one of the hospital when she woke up. She looked so lost and alone, it was a look he hated to see on her face. He knew that she was confused, that much was apparent when the doctor walked in with her chart in his hands. Denial set in immediately when she was told their baby was gone, anger filling her bright blue eyes. Hiei had no doubt that if she hadn't have been so weak so would have attacked the man, as it was she was screaming at him to stop lying to her. Her baby was fine, she refused to believe that their child was gone. The doctor had shaken his head sadly and said that it would take time for her to accept but eventually she would have to. It was then that Kagome had started becoming hysterical and the doctor had been forced to sedate her.
"Enough!" His voice was thick with emotions as he regained control of the Jagan forcing it into submission. She had lived through more than enough, he was not going to be responsible for hurting her further. He got to his feet, his clothing whipping around him in the strong winds. It was time to put an end to this and find her. He would accept nothing less. He pushed forward towards where the emotions were the strongest know that is where she would be. It was a hard fight, he was certain that she knew he was coming with the way her mind was fighting him yet she made no move to harm him.
She felt him long before she ever saw him yet she made no attempt to get up. Instead she remained sitting on the bloody ground with her hands wrapped around her knees. Rain had begun to pour down over her, chilling her to the bone. Tears streamed down her face mixing with the rain yet she did nothing to wipe them away. 'Why is he here anyway? He's already made it clear that he hates me.'
Hiei heard the thought easily enough and made his way cautiously towards her. Anger, despair and self hatred surrounded her like a blanket that she couldn't begin to hope to shed. When she looked up at him he could see the fear in her eyes, taking note of the way she winced when he continued walking towards her. He wasn't surprised, she probably thought he was going to yell at her again. When he reached her he knelt down beside her. Without waiting to gain her approval he slipped one arm around her waist, the other under her knees and picked her up. They needed to talk and he'd be damned if they both sat in the rain while they did so.
He leapt up into a tree that would shield them from the majority of the weather and drew her up into his lap. She stared down her hands, waiting for him to begin yelling at her. She deserved it, she shouldn't have gotten pregnant, she shouldn't have gone to the party and she certainly shouldn't have slept with Yusuke. The doctor had told her she had been drugged but in her eyes that was no excuse. If she hadn't have gone in the first place it wouldn't have happened. The silence continued for several long moments, neither knowing what to say. Finally she couldn't take it anymore, her voice came out as a whisper. "I'm sorry Hiei. I'm so sorry."
Hiei sighed heavily and tightened his arms around her. "You have nothing to be sorry for. I shouldn't have reacted like that."
Kagome laughed bitterly, why was he apologizing to her? For that matter why was he even here? He had no reason to be, none at all. Their relationship was over and their baby was dead. He had no reason to want to be anywhere near her. She had broken his trust and now she was paying the price, there was no way he would ever trust her again. How had he even known about what happened to her anyway? He had gone back to the Makai. "Kurama told you didn't he."
Hiei shook his head, how was he to get through to her? Already she was trying to pull away from him again, he could feel it now. She didn't want to be near him, the thought hurt though he wouldn't tell her so. He had lost his right to demand anything from her and if she objected to his touch that much he wouldn't force her. His hands loosened from around her and she moved out of his lap completely, instead gripping the branch they were on tightly. "No, Yusuke told me what happened. I meant what I said Kagome, this isn't your fault."
"Just spare me okay? I know what part I played in this. Why did you come anyway?" Kagome turned away from him, unable to look him in the face. His words had to be a lie. Hiei never apologized for anything, the very idea was unthinkable. He had no regrets, it was the way he lived his life. Live with your actions, if they are the wrong choices then so be it. She had heard it often enough.
Hiei was taken back by her words, did she really think that he wouldn't come on hearing something like this? "I came because what I did was unforgivable. I abandoned you the same way I was abandoned as a child. I had no right to treat you the way I did without letting you speak."
Kagome closed her eyes, not wanting to believe him. Why was he even trying to apologize? Nothing would ever be right again, she wouldn't get her hopes up. "So you know then. You know everything."
"I do. Kagome you need to come back, you can't stay here forever." He reached out a hand to her and waited to see if she would take it. If she remained locked away like this for too long eventually her body would give out and she would die. Did she realize how many lives would be impacted without her? Not just his own, many people had been touched by her in some way or another.
"I could you know. I realize what would happen but would that really be a bad thing? How many lives have I destroyed? How many people have been hurt? Perhaps I would be better off staying here. That way I couldn't hurt anyone else." Kagome had no desire to go back, she meant it. She had nothing to go back to and every reason just to stay here. She would die, the jewel would be taken to the Reikai until a new guardian was found. She wasn't needed by anyone and she was tired of just existing.
The hold he had held on his temper throughout this entire time snapped and he grabbed her by the waist pulling her close. She stared up into his eyes in shock as he glared down at her. "I don't want to hear you say that ever again. Hate me if you must but don't even think that you'd be better off dead. How selfish can you possibly be? Don't you have any idea how many people would mourn your death? Does your family mean so little to you? Or how about Yusuke and Kurama? Even Kuwabara would miss you. We are all suffering right along with you!"
Kagome pulled away from him violently, not wanting to listen to him anymore. "You have the nerve to call me selfish. Isn't that a bit hypocritical? You left us alone because you didn't want to be a father!" She wiped the tears away angrily, only to have them replaced by more. "Well I hope you're happy now. Aiko is gone and now you can go on with your life. You can forget this ever happened."
Hiei sat stunned for several moments, her words echoing in his head. She had already named the child, he had a daughter and now she was gone. Aiko, it was a fitting name for his daughter. Kagome had chosen well, the child had managed to find a way into his heart even if no one realized it. His voice was subdued, the fight was knocked out of him and suddenly he was very tired. "You're right, I never wanted it to happen and I left. I can't change that now, but what you don't know is I thought about it while I was gone and I had come to accept it but I never told you. I'm telling you now, no this does not make me happy. If you don't want to believe it then fine but at least I've told you. Where you want to go from this point on is up to you but you are coming back. If you're so hellbent on dying then you can be the one to tell them why. I refuse to participate in it." Hiei grabbed a hold of her, ignoring her protests as he used the Jagan once more forcing her from the dark recesses of her mind.
Author's Note from Ryukotsusei: Okay, more than one person has commented on the tendency towards dark or angsty fics and I'd like to address this issue. For the record I'm not taking offense at this, I just want to get it out in the open so the emails can stop. For me, I can't begin to speak for Rain, but I don't write happy fics. They may have a happy ending but you can be sure that Kagome and whoever she is paired with is going to go through hell and back before they get there.
For those readers that are following my story On The Night of a Blood Red Moon, you all know that it can get worse. A lot worse. Though at this point in time neither of us see this fic turning that dark. That said, I hope this clears up some of the concerns that readers have. We both hope that everyone continues to enjoy this fic.
