Keiko sighed for what had to be the hundredth time that day. She was upset and worried, she was used to Yusuke running off at the drop of a hat but to leave like he did without even a goodbye? Especially with her right there, that just wasn't him at all. Not to mention that he had come back from the party early this morning and she couldn't say she liked what she saw. She had caught him creeping back into the house trying to avoid waking her up she was sure. What was troubling was the fact he had changed for some reason into his demon form. When she questioned him he brushed the question off saying he had gotten into a fight and then disappeared into the bedroom. Her question was, why would he have powered up so drastically for a fight at a party?

It didn't make sense to her but the matter wasn't open for discussion. He continued to brood throughout the morning, not saying much even when she helped him to cut his hair. He disappeared into the bathroom shortly afterwards and then the phone had rang. She'd been out in the backyard when Yusuke answered it, whoever it was had obviously said something important by the way he ran out of the house. Now she was wandering through her classes, her mind on things other than school. "Yusuke what trouble have you gotten yourself into now?"

"Hey Keiko, you look kind of distracted today. Are you alright?" Kanaye had seen her standing there in the middle of the hallway, lost in thought yet again. To be honest he didn't have classes today, using the excuse of using their library as a quiet place to study. He had another motive for being there though, he wanted to see if Yusuke had told her what had happened between him and Kagome the night before. If he had, Kayane was more than willing to give her a shoulder to lean on.

"Hmm? Oh yes I'm fine. Just thinking is all." Keiko realized that she had been standing in the same spot for the passed ten minutes. It was no wonder that he was asking her what was wrong! She shook her head, she really needed to get her act together.

"I can see that, is there anything I can help with?" He couldn't determine whether or not Yusuke said anything. If he had she was doing an exceptional job of holding herself together, but then again, that was one of the things he liked about her. When she shook her head Kanaye decided to press further. "You know, it's almost lunchtime, care to grab a bite to each with me? My treat."

Keiko was about to refuse but her stomach decided to remind her that she had been so caught up over Yusuke's behavior that she had neglected to eat anything before she left. Food didn't seem to be too bad of an idea at this point at all. "Sure, there is a nice little cafe over there."

Kanaye nodded and walked beside her as they made their way to the cafe, an idea forming in his head about how to bring the subject up to her without having her upset with him. He opened the door for her to the cafe and then followed her inside, a waitress quickly showing them to a table.

Keiko turned to him, realizing that she really had closed herself off from the world lately by burying herself in her text books. It had been ages since she had talked to Kanaye or any of the others for that matter. She had no idea of what was going on in their lives anymore. "So Kanaye, how have things been going for you?"

Kanaye gave a slight smile and shrugged. "Not bad all things considered, been trying to keep myself busy with school. What about you?"

Keiko picked up on the slight slump of his shoulders. Something was bothering him, that much was obvious. Keiko hesitated before asking him what was wrong. It wasn't as if she didn't have enough problems of her own but then again she never was one to ignore her friends if they needed to talk. "Oh I'm just fine, you seem kinda down though. What's wrong?"

It was the opening that Kanaye was looking for and he pounced on it. He knew she would ask him that, it was just the type of person she was. He felt slightly guilty for what he was about to do but pushed it aside. As far as he was concerned she was fair game now. "Eh, it's nothing much. I've just been trying to bury myself in my work so I don't have to think. Two weeks ago I found my girlfriend in bed with one of my best friends . It's tough to deal with, you know?"

Keiko looked shocked for a moment and placed her hand over his. She couldn't imagine how he was feeling right now, nothing like that had ever happened to her. "I'm sure it is, I can't say I know what your going through but if you need to talk I'm willing to listen."

Kanaye nodded, instantly picking up on the fact that Yusuke hadn't told her. Well, she deserved to know even if he wouldn't mention the circumstances behind it. "I appreciate the offer Keiko. I just can't believe they would do that to me. I just stood there shocked for the longest time before I left. I couldn't watch it anymore, I knew if I stayed I'd do something I would regret."

Keiko nodded and squeezed his hand. "I'm sure, I can't imagine how I would feel if I caught Yusuke doing something like that." Images came to her head before she shook them away. Yusuke wasn't like that so she didn't have to worry. He loved her, that was all there was to it. When she looked at Kanaye though her eyes widened. He was staring at her with a look of disbelief on his face. "What's that look for?"

Kanaye looked down at the table for several long moments, never releasing her hand. "I didn't know that you and Yusuke were still going out."

Keiko was confused, why wouldn't they still be going out? Their last breakup had been months before and she was positive that they had seen Kanaye together since then. "Sure we are, why wouldn't we be?"

Kanaye still hesitated, looking up at her before quickly looking away again. "I don't know if I should be the one to tell you this then."

Keiko was getting scared, something was terribly wrong and it involved Yusuke. She wasn't sure she wanted to ask what he meant by that but she had to know. The events of the morning came back to her once again, Yusuke's odd behavior standing out. She knew he had gone to Kanaye's party the night before, a uneasy feeling settled in her stomach. "Tell me what? Kanaye if you know something, tell me! I need to know!"

When he heard her voice raise a notch with concern the guilt hit him again. She was going to find out sooner or later he knew but it was too late for him to back out of this now. "Yusuke was at my party last night Keiko and... God I don't know how to say this. One of his friends was there, she seemed to be having an off night about something so they spent most of the night with each other."

Keiko pulled her hands away and set them in her lap. She clenched them hard enough that her nails broke the skin before she forced herself to relax. Yusuke wouldn't let a friend stay down, he'd be right there to cheer them up. So just because he hung out with a girl didn't mean anything. "Well thank you for telling me Kanaye, that's Yusuke though. He was probably just trying to cheer her up again that's all."

Kayane shook his head slightly. "If all they did was talk I'd agree with you Keiko. I'm sorry but, that's not as far as it went. At least from what we all heard anyway. He took her in the spare room and.. I'm sure you know the rest."

Tears filled Keiko's eyes. No, he had to be mistaken! Yusuke would never step out on her like that. Their relationship was going fine, they were happy together. There had to be another explanation. "No, you're wrong. Yusuke would never do something like this to me. He wouldn't!"

Kanaye stood and moved to the other side of the table sitting next to her. People were beginning to stare at them. "I'm sorry Keiko, I didn't know you two were still a couple. Otherwise I would have stopped them before they got started. I'm sorry."

Keiko didn't bother to shrug off the arm he wrapped around her shoulders. It was true then, she didn't want to believe it but if Kanaye was telling her the truth then she couldn't deny it. Why would he lie to her anyway? "Who was she? You said it was one of his friend. Who was it?"

Kanaye was surprised that she was holding herself together so well but then again she was a very strong individual. "A girl named Kagome. She came with Kameko to the party."

Keiko stiffened in her seat, anger boiling forward destroying her tears. She couldn't believe it, Yusuke had cheated on her with Kagome? That was the absolute last person she would have ever expected. She had Hiei! What the hell had they been thinking to climb into bed together? She stood up abruptly and glared at Kanaye. "You're absolutely sure of this?"

Kanaye nodded, not saying a word. He could tell she was beyond furious and things didn't look good for Yusuke. It was almost a given that their relationship was through. He knew that she had been close friends with Kagome, this betrayal would be unforgivable. No doubt she was going to confront the two of them and when she was finished, he would be there to help her pick up the pieces of her life.

Keiko stormed out of the cafe with murder on her mind. How could she have not seen this before? How long had they been sleeping together behind her back? She wanted nothing more than to choke someone. Either one of them would work perfectly for her. Perhaps both, there was no way she was going to be able to calm down anytime soon. She decided that her first stop would be to go home. There would be a chance that Yusuke had come back to wherever he had run off to. 'Most likely to her.' The thought crept in bitterly. He had completely ignored her in favor of leaving. It was easy to believe that he had gone back to her. She remembered what he had looked like when he came home and it made sense. He changed while he was fucking her. Yusuke always told her that he had to hold back when they were intimate, that if he didn't he might change and hurt her. Apparently he found someone that could take all of him, and damned if that thought didn't piss her off even more. Her thoughts turned bloody as she came up with all sorts of ways to make him pay. "Oh yes Yusuke. You will pay dearly for this!"

Yusuke passed the border into the Makai and stopped for a minute. How in the fuck was he supposed to find Hiei anyway? He seriously doubted the hybrid had any desire to speak to him. Kill him yes, but talking was likely to be out of the question. The logical place to find him would be to stay near the border or head over to Mukuro's fortress but Hiei could be the most illogical of demon's he'd ever had the pleasure of knowing which meant he could be anywhere. Yusuke sighed, this was likely to be a very long search and they didn't have time for this bullshit.

There was one way he knew of to get Hiei's attention. Well, his and every other demon in the vicinity. There was every likelihood Mukuro would show up to find out what the hell was going on. It was no matter, this didn't concern her. Without a second thought Yusuke began to raise his aura to battle levels, the blue light flaring around him. He began walking, ready for any attack that might come. No doubt Hiei could feel him if he was in the area. The question was, would he answer his call?

~*~

Hiei was brooding not far from the fortress, he had told Mukuro he was back for an indefinite period of time. She of course had asked the reason since he had been adamant about continuing to live in the Ningenkai with Kagome. He had told her to mind her own business, he didn't want to talk about it at the moment. He was surprised when she backed off on the questioning, giving him his space. For that he was grateful. He needed time to think away from everything. She had even given him leave of his patrolling duties for the next week saying he looked like shit. He snorted, it wasn't surprising. He just had his heart torn out and stomped on in front of him. How was he supposed to feel?

He knew that he shouldn't have stayed gone so long, that she would take it badly but he had needed time to think this thing through. He couldn't take back the words that he had said, nor would he. At the time he had meant every word of them, he hadn't wanted children, he didn't believe he could possibly make a good father and yet... Kagome loved him enough that she wanted a family with him, she wanted to have his children and he knew that he had hurt her when he yelled at her. Every day he would head to the border, ready to go back but stopped. The truth of the matter was the idea of children scared him. Would they even be able to survive? Being what they were, it was hard enough for him. Any children he sired with Kagome would be worse. Then there was the additional problem of Kagome giving birth. There was a good chance that she would die in childbirth, especially if the kid took after his side, being a fire elemental. The very idea of losing her had made him see red. He wasn't sure how he would handle it if she died birthing his child.

He had finally come to terms with it when he went back. He had even made plans, no doubt she would need to have the care of someone who could deal with youkai and hanyou deliveries. He had spent two days tracking down a midwife, rumored to be the most skilled and convinced her to look after the girl. He wouldn't trust the human hospitals that Kurama had spent so much time at with his mother. If they couldn't cure a human malady like what Shiori had been afflicted with then he certainly wasn't going to trust them with his woman. His woman... He closed his eyes against the pain in his heart as he thought about her. He had finally been ready to mate her, truly making her his and now all of that was gone. He tried to shut himself off from his emotions, this was exactly why he had denied himself for so very long. He'd never make this mistake again. The pain wasn't worth it.

Hiei looked up, feeling him the moment Yusuke stepped across the border. Hiei remained in his spot, there was no way in hell Yusuke would ever be able to find him unless he wanted to be found. He was certain that was what the ex-detective was there for, he had no other reason to come to the Makai. He was looking for a confrontation obviously, he couldn't possibly be expecting for them to sit down together and have a beer. Not after what happened. He seriously considered going to him, feeling the need for a good fight and yet still he remained seated. The image of Kagome sitting there so broken flashed before his eyes and he growled. She seemed to truly believe in what she was saying but it just wasn't possible. He hated to see her cry and he hated it even worse to know that he was the one to drive her to it. He had also been the one to drive her into Yusuke's arms and that thought pissed him off the worst.

He felt Yusuke's power rising and narrowed his eyes. The bastard was actually calling him out? There was no mistaking the challenge in his aura, he was giving him an invitation to fight and Hiei was never one to turn a fight down. Especially not when there was a score to settle. The wind was the only thing that marked his passing as he sped towards the one foolish enough to touch what was his. Even now after he had dissolved any relationship between them she fell into that category because of the child she carried. It did not matter that Yusuke had branded her. It was no matter though, the mark would be gone soon. One way or another.

His target was in sight yet he refused to strike from behind. He wanted to look in Yusuke's eyes when he died. No longer was he worried about Koenma's wrath, the toddler had no say. Yusuke was no longer in his employ, no longer human and he had come into the Makai blatantly challenging him. It was his right to kill him if he saw fit. It pleased him to see the surprise on the the man's face when he suddenly appeared, katana drawn and already cutting through the air. Hiei landed gracefully on the ground, Yusuke having barely dodged the strike that would have removed his head from his neck. A thin line of crimson a testament as to how close he had come.

Yusuke swiped a hand over the cut, smearing the blood across his skin. That had been close, much too close. He remained in a defensive stance, warily watching the Apparition that stood before him. He knew he had to do some fast talking, no doubt Hiei wouldn't hesitate to attack again. He'd defend himself if necessary, but he needed to get Hiei to understand why he was there. "Dammit Hiei! I know you want my head and you are free to have it... After I tell you why I am here!" He dodged yet another cut that left a long slice in his shirt, exposing his chest beneath. He could tell already that Hiei was in no mood to listen.

Hiei waited for an opening, surprised that Yusuke was just defending himself. He should be attacking, especially if he was here to challenge him over the girl. Either way, Hiei wasn't interested in what he had to say. He did however sheath his sword, feeling the need to beat the man to death with his bare hands. A long slow kill would be just the thing to make him feel even just a little bit better. He leapt forward and struck out, easily avoiding the way Yusuke blocked and landed a hard blow into his stomach.

Yusuke drew in a ragged breath, that had hurt but it was by no means the worst pain he had ever felt. "Hiei you have to listen to me! There are things you need to know and if you don't believe me after I have told you, use the Jagan." He sidestepped a kick that Hiei had aimed for his head, this was going to end badly if he didn't start fighting back. He struck out landing a hard punch to the apparitions face, sending him back several feet. Hiei came at him faster than he could avoid and returned the favor slamming Yusuke into a nearby tree. The wood cracked under the impact and Yusuke stood there momentarily stunned.

Hiei glared at Yusuke, he had already heard enough. The time for talking had long since passed. "Spare me your lies detective. I have no interest in anything you have to say. If you came here to fight for Kagome, you should have prepared to die." He started forward once more, fully prepared to put an end to this encounter when Yusuke raised his hand, the energy collected at his fingertips.

"Don't make me do this Hiei. I came to get your help, Kagome's in the hospital. If I have to I'll drag you there by your hair. One way or another you will listen to me." Yusuke watched him stop in front of him. He knew that it was unlikely he would survive this next round if Hiei chose to attack. He could easily dodge any attack he could fire at the moment and they both knew it.

Yusuke's words stopped Hiei cold, all thoughts of killing the man left his mind for the time being. Had something happened to her? An attack of some kind? His eyes narrowed as he glared at Yusuke, he didn't sense any deceit from the man but he wasn't going to let his guard down either. "Why would Kagome be in the hospital? She looked fine when I left her."

"Well... she... damnit! Just use the fucking Jagan!" Yusuke was beyond frustrated, he had already gone through this explanation one time too many and there was no telling how Kagome was going to react when she woke up, if she hadn't already. They needed to get moving, it would be faster if Hiei just pulled the memories from him and save them both the trouble.

Hiei's eyes widened, startled by Yusuke's demand. Not once had the man ever invited him into his mind. It made it all the more clear to him that something very important was going on. "Fine but this changes nothing. You will pay for what you have done."

"Fine, if you want to fight about what happened later then we will. Just fucking do it already, we don't have time for this bullshit." Yusuke knew that this was far from over but he'd worry about it later. He tried to relax as he felt the sudden intrusion into his mind. He was surprised though when the memories from the night before forced themselves to the front.

Hiei wanted to know exactly what had happened, it had been bothering him ever since he had left Kagome sitting there yet his pride would not allow him to go back and use the Jagan on her. But now that Yusuke was there and volunteering he was determined to learn every single detail behind this betrayal. It was as if he were there, living the same moments that Yusuke had. He listened to the conversations they had, felt Kagome's tears beneath his fingertips. He snarled in fury as he watched Kagome make the first move when they were in bed together, though it ebbed when he heard his name whispered, not that of the detective.

And then shame filled him as he relived the conversation with the doctor, finding out that she had been drugged. That it was possible that she really believed he was there and he had called her a liar. It had crushed her when she realized she had betrayed him, and he pushed her down further with his actions toward her. Now she was in the hospital, no doubt believing that he would never return to her. Worse, she had lost the baby to the drug her so called friend had given her. His child was now dead and he was powerless to do anything about it. He wrenched himself free from Yusuke's mind, ignoring how the man fell to his knees. Someone was going to die, it was just a question of who would go first. 'This Maiko had better run, not even Koenma will be able to save her now.'
