Chapter Five
Kameko heard her yell and ran out of the kitchen just in time to see Kagome fall through the railing. "Kagome!" She darted forward knowing that there was no way she would reach her in time. She watched in horror as her friend fell, landing heavily on the wooden table beneath her. She dropped to the ground, moving the girls hair out of her face to see if she was okay. She was afraid to move her, Kagome hadn't even opened her eyes when she touched her. She didn't know if she had passed out before she fell or was knocked out when her face slammed into the wood. Either way the girl was unconscious and needed help. Kameko ran to get the phone, dialing the paramedics. It was then that she saw the blood pooling beneath her and realized that she was losing the baby.
It was the longest twenty minutes of Kameko's life as she waited for the ambulance to get there. She was nearly in tears when they finally arrived and she let them through the door. She was right beside them when they removed Kagome from the table and placed her on the stretcher. The girl moaned and tried to open her eyes but failed. A whisper passed her lips and Kameko could only grip Kagome's hand. Of course she would call out for Hiei, she needed him now more than ever. She didn't know where to begin looking for him, but maybe Yusuke would. "Don't worry Kagome, we'll find him. Just rest, you're going to be okay."
Kameko wasn't sure whether or not Kagome even understood what she said but it seemed to be enough. She followed them out to the ambulance and watched as the loaded her friend inside. She started to climb in when she was stopped, the paramedic telling her she couldn't ride with her. She glared at the man, her look promising pain if he tried to stop her. "I don't give a fuck what your regulations say, that is my friend and I am going with you!" The man seemed to hesitate for a minute before agreeing. They didn't have time to argue with her anyway. Satisfied she made her point she climbed into the vehicle and allowed them to close the doors.
Of course she was separated from Kagome once they arrived at the hospital. It was obvious that she was losing the child, it was just a matter of time. Sighing heavily she went to the pay phone and dialed Yusuke's number. She was probably one of the last people he wanted to talk to right now but they needed to find Hiei. When Kagome woke up she was likely to be hysterical. Kameko stood there with the phone crushed to her ear, impatiently tapping her foot. The phone had already rang eight times and just when she was ready to hang up, Yusuke answered.
"Jesus fucking Christ, what?!" Yusuke was straight pissed off. Although he had been having feelings towards Kagome of a more intimate nature for a long time now, she had also been a very close friend of his and the rest of the Spirit Detectives. He knew in his heart that he should have put up more of a fight against her last night, but when it came down to it, he couldn't. He knew he loved her and if she was giving herself to him, well, he wasn't about to look a gift horse in the mouth. He now knew that Kagome had thought that he was Hiei and the pain of realizing what they had done was well as the fact that he had marked her as a potential mate did nothing to assuage the guilt he now felt. Yes he loved her, but she loved Hiei. He knew things were going to be even more difficult for them once the truth was known. He had been taking a shower when the phone rang. He had planned to simply ignore it, but when the caller hadn't given up, he cut his shower short and ran to answer it dripping wet. Now, he was pissed off because his shower was interrupted and he planned to let said caller know exactly how angry he was. After his less than charming hello, Kameko's panicked voice burst through his anger.
"Yusuke, there isn't time for you to be pissed off right now. I'm at the hospital with Kagome." She paused then, drawing in a shaky breath as the tears for her friend threatened to break free. "Yusuke, Kagome is pregnant...and she is losing her baby." Kameko wasn't sure how much more stress she could handle, seeing her friend laying there so pale on stretcher was too much. She wanted badly to just sit down and cry, she blamed herself for this. She should have kept a better watch over Kagome, then she wouldn't have fallen.
Yusuke could only stand there, gaping at the phone while his mind reeled in shock. Kagome was pregnant?! Was he responsible for her losing the baby? If he were, he would never forgive himself. Hearing Kameko calling his name on the other end of the phone, he shook himself from his stupor to bite out a quick reply. "I'll be there as soon as I can." Yusuke slammed the phone back down and ran into the bedroom. Clothes were yanks on quickly, uncaring of the fact that he was still slightly wet. He grabbed his keys off of the dresser and bolted out the front door, not hearing Keiko's question of where was he going.
He knew that he was breaking every speed limit known to man as he drove to the hospital. Cursing was head several times as he narrowly avoided hitting other people in his rush. He slammed on the breaks as he pulled into the parking lot, taking the first available spot that he found. Once he shut the car off he was off and running to the double doors of the emergency room. He immediately spotted Kameko sitting in a chair staring at a large door. She hadn't even noticed his arrival. If he was willing to wager a guess, that was probably the door they took Kagome through. He stopped in front of her, startling her when she looked up. "Tell me what the hell happened!"
Kameko brought her tear filled gaze up to his and wanted nothing more than to tell him that everything was going to be okay. Truthfully she didn't know if it would be anymore. "You just missed one of the nurses a few minutes ago. Kagome's in surgery, the nurse said that she was losing too much blood and they needed to stop it before she bled to death. She fell Yusuke, I guess she passed out coming down the stairs. She fell right through the railing and dropped onto a table. I couldn't catch her, I wasn't fast enough."
Yusuke stared at her for several long moments. He should have never left her alone, but he had no choice. "Did they say if she's going to be okay?" He couldn't understand how everything had gotten this fucked up so quickly. Kameko merely shook her head and he understood. These people wouldn't tell them anything until she was well established in the recovery room. Yusuke sighed and ran his hand through his hair in aggravation. "Dammit! Where the fuck is Hiei? Why the hell isn't that bastard here?"
Kameko looked at the ground, his outburst told her that he more than likely didn't know that Hiei knew already. The question crossed her mind as to how the hell Hiei knew then but they had more important things to worry about. "Yusuke... Hiei was waiting for her when we got back to the house and.. He knew. He knew what happened between the two of you but... Kagome thought that you were him. He was mad Yusuke, I've never seen anyone that angry before. He told her that they were over and he walked out. Do you know how to find him? I think even with what happened she's going to need him."
Yusuke knew that she was right, Kagome was going to need Hiei and if she was indeed pregnant with his kid then he deserved to know what was going on. God he felt like an ass. Of course she wouldn't have wanted to tell him that she was pregnant, especially if Hiei up and blasted her for it. Some of the things he said to her had to have hurt, he wouldn't be surprised if she hated him for what he had said and done. "No I don't, but I might know someone who can. I'll be back." Yusuke walked over to the pay phone that Kameko had used earlier.
He wasn't sure how in the hell he was going to explain this one to Kurama. No doubt the kitsune would demand to know what the hell had happened. How was he supposed to explain to him that he was drunk and fucked his best friends woman? Kurama cared for the girl as well as the rest of them but his love for her was that of a sibling. If Kurama thought that he took advantage of the girl he'd have to deal with his wrath as well. He dialed the number to Kurama's cell phone. He doubted the man was at work, normally taking a lunch at this time. He wasn't surprised when he answered on the second ring. He didn't waste time with any greetings, instead getting right to the point. "Kurama, I need you to come down to the hospital. It's important."
Kurama set his tea down calmly, disturbed by the tone in Yusuke's voice. The man almost never called him during the day and the fact that he called him Kurama when he was in a public place was telling. "What's wrong Yusuke? Is Keiko ill?" He stood and collected his lunch, depositing it in the nearest trash can. If he was needed at the hospital he could make it in twenty minutes if he left now.
"It's Kagome, she's in emergency surgery. Look, I'll explain what's going on when you get here and if you know where Hiei is tell him she needs him. He doesn't know what's going on either." The details of this weren't anything that he wanted to get into over the phone that was for damned sure. Besides, he wasn't sure what he was going to say to him anyway, this would give him a few minutes to collect his thoughts.
"I'm on my way Yusuke, I'll be there in half an hour or so. If I see Hiei I'll tell him but I haven't talked to him in a couple of weeks. I doubt I'll run into him. I'll talk to you when I get there. Goodbye." Kurama hung up the phone and tucked it into his pocket. He wondered what had happened and why Yusuke didn't want to tell him over the phone. The man sounded positively nervous about something but he couldn't tell if it was due to Kagome's condition or something else. His thoughts wandered to Hiei, if he wasn't aware of what was going on it was likely that the apparition was in the Makai again. One of them would need to go and retrieve him, there was no telling when he would be back from his patrols. He'd be furious if he wasn't informed of what was going on.
On the way there he placed a call to the office, letting them know that he would be taking the rest of the day off. The accounts that he needed to look over could wait a day and if by chance this took longer no doubt one of his assistants could handle it until he returned. He parked his car and made his way inside, noting that a man in scrubs was just coming through one of the inside doors and walking towards Yusuke and a woman that he had only met a few times. He stopped next to Yusuke, nodding a greeting to them. He was much more interested in hearing what the Doctor had to say than exchanging pleasantries at the moment.
The doctor pulled out the chart that was under his arm and looked over it briefly before closing it again. "I'm Dr. Sasaki, I am Ms. Higurashi's doctor." He directed the three of them over to a side room for more privacy. "I'm sure that you know she lost the baby, there wasn't any chance of saving the pregnancy. The fall and the drugs in her system saw to that. She's in recovery now but it will be at least a week before she is allowed to go home."
Kurama's eyes widened at the news, he hadn't heard anything about this and looked towards Yusuke. His eyes narrowed when the man looked away from him, guilt radiating off of him in waves. Even Youko had gone silent in his head, his concern for the girl pushing to the surface. His voice was soft as he turned his attention back to the doctor. "You said she had drugs in her system? Kagome doesn't do drugs." He knew that was the truth, he would have picked up the signs of it if she had been. There was no way that between Youko and himself they could have missed it.
Dr. Sasaki nodded once, some people took this particular drug for recreation but it wasn't common by any means. "Yes, she had the drug Ketamine in her system. It's becoming more common here and she had fairly high levels in her system, there was no way she could have avoided losing the baby. The Ketamine saw to that. There was also an indication that she might have been sexually assaulted recently. She has a deep bite mark on her as well as trauma to her lower body." He paused to gage their reactions. Stunned disbelief was an apt way to describe all three of them.
"Oh my god. The party last night!" It all fell into place now, the look that was on Maiko's face when she asked her to go out to get them. Kameko saw the questioning looks being cast at her and sighed. How could she have been so stupid? "Maiko asked me to go and get the two of you. I didn't think anything of it at the time and when we came back..." She trailed off, trying to remember exactly what happened. "She handed Kagome that soda, saying she wanted punch instead."
Yusuke paled as he realized that he had drank part of her soda as well, but it had been nearly empty when he had stole it from her. He should have known that there was something wrong, it all made sense. She hadn't started acting weird until after she had come back inside. Guilt flooded through him, if he had known maybe he could have done something to stop this. Hell, Kurama might have had something to counteract the drug and Kagome wouldn't be in the hospital right now.
Kurama once more took the initiative since no one was saying anything. There was a good chance that any evidence of who assaulted her would have been removed from her system as soon as the miscarriage began. He had his suspicions of who it was however as he watched the emotions crossing Yusuke's face. By Kameko's admission, he had been present and if there was a bite mark as the doctor said it only confirmed it. He would deal with the detective later. For now, he wanted answers. "Is there anything else that we should know about? How long will it be before we can go in and see her?"
Dr. Sasaki looked over to him, it was obvious the man was very concerned for her. "Well, the fall broke three of her ribs as well as fractured her cheekbone. She'll need to have someone with her to help her move around when she gets home, she'll need to stay in bed as much as possible for at least a week. We don't want to take the chance of her hemorrhaging again. As for your other question she'll stay in recovery until the anesthesia wears off. I expect she'll be awake within the hour. After she gets moved to a room you can see her. Until then you can wait in here." He was surprised at how well the girl had responded during surgery. He had expected a much more difficult fight to get the bleeding to stop all things considered. He couldn't have known that it was due in part to Kagome's healing abilities. "Oh, one more thing. The authorities have been notified as to the drug found in her system. I'm sure they will be sending a detective to question her. If there is anything that you three can contribute it would help the investigation I am sure. If the dose she had ingested had been too much higher it would have killed her, whoever this Maiko is needs to be stopped before she hurts someone else."
Kurama watched as the doctor walked out and turned to Kameko. "Can you please excuse us for a few minutes?" He didn't know how much the girl knew about Kagome and Yusuke if anything and he wasn't about to tell her anything she didn't already know. He waited for the girl to nod and leave the room before he turned to Yusuke who was looking extremely nervous. Youko was pushing at the edges of his containment, longing to be the one to come out and get the answers to their questions. "Yusuke, what was Kameko talking about? I know there is more going on here than you are telling me. If we are to help Kagome at all, I need to know everything."
Yusuke had known this was coming and it was time to admit his part in this. He'd find out as soon as they went in to see Kagome anyway. It was better to get it out of the way now. "I was at the party last night. Kagome and Hiei had a major fight, I didn't know what it was about at the time but she was really bummed. She told me that she had talked to Hiei, told him she wanted to have kids and that he flipped then left. She left out the part how she told him she was already pregnant."
Kurama nodded, unsurprised that Hiei would leave upon hearing that. While he understood how Hiei would feel confronted with this news it didn't excuse his reaction. He planned on having a long talk with his partner over this one. One look at the other man's face told him there was more to it than that though. "What are you leaving out Yusuke? Did something happen between the two of you last night?"
Yusuke leaned his head back against the wall, looking up at the ceiling. "Yeah it did, I was drunk and didn't know she was drugged. Things happened, but she thought I was Hiei. I didn't know it, not at first. Shit this is so fucked up!" Yusuke knew that he had better choose his words carefully based on the way Kurama was looking at him. He could tell Youko was very close to the surface, especially if the amount of gold showing in his eyes was any indication. "If I had known I never would have touched her!"
Kurama couldn't believe what he was hearing. He had seen Yusuke drunk plenty of times and not once did he ever lose control of himself to the point that he would take another woman to bed. He wasn't blind to the man's affections to Kagome but for him to act on them was another story. Add to it the fact that Kagome came to him distressed over a fight with Hiei. She'd be vulnerable and easily taken advantage of. "The bite that Dr. Sasaki spoke of, was that your doing as well?"
Yusuke knew the tone Kurama was using with him, it was completely devoid of all emotion. The kitsune was pissed and he couldn't blame him. He was pissed off at himself, he could only imagine what Hiei was thinking right now. He had the most right out of any of them to be furious. "Yes, it was. Kameko told me that Hiei damned near tore Kagome's shirt off to look at it before he left her."
"So Hiei knows. Did Kameko tell you what else he said?" He knew how Hiei would take to finding out Kagome had been with the Detective. He'd be furious with the both of them with good reason but he didn't know the full details behind the betrayal. Kagome was blameless in this being under the influence of the drug. Yusuke on the other hand didn't have much of an excuse. If he changed enough to give her a courtship mark, it easily explained the trauma that the doctor mentioned. No doubt letting himself go like that would leave evidence that she had been taken forcefully.
"Yeah, he called her a liar from what she said and then told her they were through. Then he left. Kurama, I've done a lot of shit in my life that I've regretted but this has to take the cake. I never wanted to hurt her. Or him for that matter." Yusuke stood up and looked out the window. Kameko was talking to the nurse that had come out earlier. Maybe there was some good news, they could use some of that right about now. "Where do you think he is anyway? Kagome needs him. I know he's pissed at us but he still loves her right? He should be here."
For what was worth Kurama agreed with him, Hiei needed to be there. His feelings for the girl wouldn't just go away overnight but would he listen to reason and come back? Hiei was a very proud demon who rarely let anyone close. It would be difficult if not impossible for him to accept what had happened. His woman had been marked by another, even after the marked faded he would always be reminded that she had lain with another. "He's probably in the Makai by now. The only way to find him will be to go looking and that could take days I'm afraid." He knew that if Hiei didn't want to be found, he wouldn't be and the likelihood that he was receptive to company would be slim.
Yusuke turned back to his friend, coming to a decision. He might be the last person Hiei wanted to talk to but he'd be the one most likely to find him. If nothing else, Hiei had a score to settle with him. "I'm going to go look for him. I'll drag his ass back here if I have to. Can you stay here with her until I bring him back?" He was not looking forward to thins but it was the least he could do for Kagome. Maybe once Hiei heard what had happened, things would be alright.
"I will, it would probably be best if you weren't here anyway. We don't know how Kagome would react to seeing you again so soon. The drug might have effected her memory. Until we know for certain it's not worth the risk." Kurama stood next to him, he could hear the nurse talking. Kagome had been moved into a semi private room and Kameko was arguing that she needed her own room. Without insurance there was no way they would move her. Kurama shook his head, perhaps there was something he could do about that. Hiei wasn't the only one that could acquire money when it became necessary. He had a steady supply of cash both from his jobs and from his vaults back in the Makai. "Stay safe Yusuke."
Yusuke snorted, there were few things in the Makai that could take him down. Unfortunately one of the things that likely could at this point would be one enraged fire apparition. "You know me Kurama. I'll be back as soon as I can and Hiei will be with me."
Kurama watched as Yusuke walked out of the building on his self appointed mission and shook his head. "Good luck Yusuke." Once the man was out of sight he turned his attention to the nurse. He had a private room to obtain.
