Chapter Four
Yusuke sighed heavily as he pulled Kagome's limp form closer to him, wanting to hold her for just a little while longer. His hand brushed her hair away from her shoulder and he looked down sadly at the bite mark that was there. Changing forms had brought problems that he could have never anticipated, his demon blood had quickly destroyed the alcohol and narcotics in his system but by then it was already too late. He had marked her as his potential mate, it wouldn't' t become a true mating mark until she shared his blood but that wasn't likely to happen. Now he could think clearly and his heart ached with what he knew was to come. Did she even know that it was him? Or was she instead thinking that it was Hiei who was making love to her?
There was only one way to find out for certain but he didn't want to ask her that. It would only complicate matters more than the already were. This was sure to cause major problems for everyone concerned. Hiei was likely to be furious with the both of them but the good thing was his mark would fade over time. But would Hiei be willing to accept his explanation that he was drunk when it happened? 'Not a chance in hell, he's likely to call me out anyway.' Beyond that he still had to consider Keiko, he still loved her as well but if she found out about this she would be furious. There was every chance she would leave him for good after slapping the shit out of him a few times. He'd worry about what he was going to tell her later. Right now he'd worry about Kagome, she had enough problems to deal with without adding to it. With luck he could speak to Hiei before he saw Kagome again and he could get it straightened out.
He decided that time was of the essence and it would be best if he got rid what evidence that he could that this night ever happened. He got up out of the bed and cradled Kagome against his chest being careful not to wake her. Silently he made his way to the nearest bathroom. Once there, he stripped away the sheet he had wrapped her in and walked into the bathroom. It took a bit of careful maneuvering but eventually he was able to get the water turned on and a comfortable temperature before gently lowering her into the water.
He held his breath as she moved slightly but didn't wake up. He frowned at this, he didn't think he had tired her out that badly but with how much stress she was under he could understand her being exhausted. Gently he washed her, making sure he removed all traces of their joining. Once he was certain she was cleaned he dried her and wrapped her in a soft, blue towel and carried her back into the bedroom. He was damned lucky that everyone was passed out asleep, it would have been damned difficult explaining his sudden hair growth not to mention the tattoos. They'd fade in time but he'd have to be gone long before that happened. Carefully he dressed her and set her back into bed, covering her with the comforter.
He took one last look at her before opening the window and heading out into the night. She'd be fine, Kameko had no doubt stayed the night and would be able to take her home. He needed to go home as well and take some time to think and figure out what the hell he was going to say to Hiei when he found him. With luck he'd be able to keep his head attached in the process.
Kagome groaned into the pillow and turned, trying to shield her eyes from the sunlight that was pouring in through the window. Her head ached horribly and she felt a dull aching in her stomach. Her hand reached out and brushed over the empty spot in the bed next to her. "Figures." Kagome muttered, somehow she was not surprised that he would leave like that. Hiei had told her on more than one occasion that he had no desire to meet any of her human friends. He had refused to go out with any of them and the few times she had gone to parties he had turned his nose up at the idea. A smile crossed her face though, thankful that he had at least come back to her. He still wanted her and it gave her hope that they would be able to work things out.
She sat up in bed, the comforter pooling down in her lap and she frowned. How had she gotten dressed? She didn't remember getting up again, she would have noticed that she was alone if she had. The only thing she could figure was that Hiei had put her clothes back on, though she really didn't understand why he would have done so. He knew she hated sleeping with anything on. Maybe he was worried about someone coming in and seeing her nude. "That would make sense, he's threatened to rip the eyes out of more than one person who has looked at me."
Kagome swung her feet over the side of the bed and moved to stand. A cramp hit her and she cursed. "Damn, I know it's been nearly two weeks but did he have to be so rough? I'm going to have to talk to him about that." She sighed heavily, wondering if he had gone back to the Makai once more or would he be at home waiting for her. "I know he'll be back, he promised." Feeling a bit better she stood up and made her way out to the living room. Just as she expected Kameko was asleep on the couch, drooling slightly. Kayane was no where to be seen, more than likely asleep in her room. Yusuke was gone as well but that wasn't surprising. He had Keiko to go home to and probably felt it was safe to leave after Hiei arrived. Kagome thought about going and grabbing something to eat but what she really wanted to do was go home. Hiei could be there waiting on her, she could eat breakfast then. She moved over to the couch and shook her friend lightly. "Kameko wake up, I need to go home."
Kameko opened one brown eye and looked blearily up at her friend. She started to close it again but then realized that it was Kagome and sat up quickly, wiping the side of her face, "Damn Kagome, you had all of us scared last night. Are you okay?" The girl still looked like hell but she seemed somewhat happier. Apparently Yusuke had quite an effect on the girl.
Kagome smiled trying to reassure her friend. "Of course, it was just stress and the heat. You know how it goes, but right now I need to get home. There's a few things I need to do today so what do you say? You up for it?" Kagome fidgeted in place as she watched her friend cover her eyes. She really hoped that Kameko wouldn't go back to sleep, if she did she'd end up catching the train instead and she really didn't feel like dealing with that at the moment.
Kameko shook her head at the way Kagome was chewing on her lip. She had rarely seen the girl this anxious over things but who was she to argue. She'd see the girl home. Maybe they'd do lunch or something, she wasn't going to ask now but later she wanted to hear all the juicy details of just how Yusuke made her feel better. Everyone that was still in the house had listened to what sounded was one hell of a fuck going on. More than a few of the girls had been envious, it certainly sounded like they enjoyed themselves. "Alright I'm up, let me grab my purse and we can go."
Kagome smiled and made her way to the door, putting her shoes on. Kameko was right behind her and they stepped outside both shivering at the slight chill that was in the air. As they climbed in the car Kameko decided to be nosy and ask what was so important that they leave. "What plans do you have for the day anyway? It must be important if you're this anxious."
"Oh, I think Hiei might be home and we need to talk. After that I need to do some shopping, you know the usual stuff." Kagome looked out the window hoping that the girl wouldn't ask her what she planned on shopping for. It would be awkward telling her that she needed to see about buying more comfortable clothes, not to mention looking in the maternity section when it became obvious that she was pregnant. She didn't want to tell anyone, not yet. First she wanted to get to her doctor's appointment and make sure the baby was healthy before they broke the news to anyone including her family.
"Yes, I'm sure you do." Kameko knew the girl was distracted, probably thinking of ways to tell her asshole boyfriend that it was over and that she had a new lover. Not that she blamed her one bit, maybe it would teach this guy a lesson in how to treat his next girlfriend. Then again, she didn't think he gave a damned for Kagome anyway so the lesson would probably go right over his head. "If you need any help just ask, I'm good at settling domestic issues." She smirked, that was one way to put it. She could be as rude and sarcastic as the next person. If this guy didn't take it well, she would be sure and point out to him the error of his ways.
"I'm sure I can handle it on my own but thanks anyway." Kagome smiled and shook her head. Perhaps it was better that Hiei had never met her, those two were sure to fight tooth and nail and with Hiei that could be a very dangerous proposition. She stared out the window watching the scenery go by, thinking back to the night before. At the start there had been a gentleness to him that had been unusual. She wasn't complaining though, it was nice to feel loved and cared for even if he quickly reverted back to his domineering ways that was guaranteed to set her body on fire.
A short while later, Kameko pulled into the driveway of the place Kagome called home. She didn't see another car in the driveway besides Kagome's but that didn't necessarily mean anything. She knew a lot of couples that one had one vehicle. She looked over to Kagome who looked a little tense, her hands clenched so hard her knuckles were white. She didn't blame her her friend for being anxious over the upcoming conversation with her boyfriend, but she was truthful when she said she would help if needed. Kagome was a sweet girl and a wonderful person; she didn't deserve the treatment her man gave her.
Sighing heavily, Kameko opened her door when Kagome got out and headed up the stairs to her front door. As soon as both girls were inside they found Hiei waiting for them. He was leaning against the wall and immediately turned his head towards them when the door closed. Kagome smiled and started to walk towards him but then stopped when she saw his expression. He was staring at her with a look of shock on his face but then his eyes narrowed. Kagome was about to ask him what was wrong, she had never seen such a look of fury on his face before. This was even worse than when she had told him she was pregnant. Hiei stalked up towards her and surprised her by jerking the material of her blouse off of her shoulder, tearing it in the process. His voice was low and deadly as he spoke, sending a chill through both girls. "You just couldn't wait to hop into another's bed could you?"
Kagome gasped in shock, confusion spreading across her face. He was accusing her of cheating on him? She would never do such a thing, why would he say something like that? "Hiei? What are you talking about? I haven't been with anyone other than you." She was truly lost, an uneasy feeling twisted in her stomach. The look Hiei was giving her was enough to freeze over all nine layers of hell. She started slightly at Kameko's sharp intake of breath and looked over to her friend questioningly. Her voice was shaky as she took a step back from her enraged lover. "Kameko? Tell him! You were there all night! I wouldn't sleep with someone else."
Kameko stared at her friend in shock. Didn't she remember last night? She moved towards the girl who was now shaking, she was either terrified of what her boyfriend would do to her and was trying to cover it up or she really didn't remember. Kagome wasn't the type of person to lie in any situation though, she had to believe the girl didn't know what was talking about. The better question was how the hell did Hiei know about it, unless Yusuke told him. She shook her head sadly, things were about to get very ugly. "Actually Kagome. You have been with someone else, last night."
Kagome's eyes widened in disbelief, this couldn't believe she was hearing this. She searched her friend's features, desperately trying to that she was lying or somehow mistaken. She couldn't find evidence of either, she realized the girl was telling the truth. But how could that be? She was with Hiei last night! She shook her head, her voice coming out so softly, breaking under the onslaught of her emotions. "But, but that was Hiei! He came back to me last night!" She spun around to face the demon she had grown to love so much. If anything his expression had hardened further. "You came to Kameko's last night, right? Y-you came b-back. I know it was you! Who else could it have been?"
The question had caught him off guard, why in the hell would she even attempt saying that he was there? At first he thought that she might have gotten drunk but he could smell no alcohol on her. He growled, apparently she thought he was too stupid to realize that. No doubt she would claim to be drunk at the time. He ignored the way that she was sobbing now. She tried to speak but the words had died in her throat. Kameko steadied her with a hand on her shoulder, it was the only thing that kept her from sinking to the floor. Her gaze came off the floor to look at Hiei again, his hands were clenched and shaking as if he wanted to hit something. She winced as once hand came up gripping her chin painfully as he sneered at her, "Who else indeed? Tell me, was Yusuke a better fuck than I was? How did you convince him to rut with a pregnant woman in the first place?"
Kagome shook her head in denial. "No, Yusuke knows I love you, He'd never do something like that." She suddenly felt very sick and lightheaded. "I.. I need to sit down." Kagome allowed Kameko to lead her over to a chair and fell heavily into it. This had to be a nightmare, there was no way this was actually happening. Her head fell into her hands as she willed herself to wake up from this dream.
Kameko turned back towards Hiei, he hadn't moved from his spot and he looked as if he was struggling with his emotions. She was beyond pissed, everything fell into place now with Kagome's depression and how ill she had been. "You fucking asshole, where do you get off? You knew she was pregnant and you left her like that! No wonder I couldn't get her out of her depression!"
Hiei looked up at the woman towering over him. He didn't need to answer to her, he didn't give a fuck if she was one of Kagome's friends or not he wasn't about to let some human talk down to him. "I suggest you mind your own business woman, this doesn't concern you." He looked over to Kagome once more, he should have known something like this would happen. It was one reason why he hadn't made her his mate yet and now it looked like he never would. Humans weren't to be trusted. He had thought that she was the exception and had allowed himself to love her and now here they were. The first chance she had gotten she had betrayed him. He walked passed the girl in front of him but she grabbed a hold of his shirt. He growled low in his chest and turned to face her.
Kameko glared at him hard, clearly not intimidated by his look. "You made it my business when you left Kagome. Again I might add. I've been watching out for her ever since she started this relationship with you and you know what? You don't deserve her. No, don't you fucking look at me like that. You don't deserve her! You disappear for weeks at a time leaving her here alone. So she fucked someone else, from what I heard through the walls he probably was a hell of a lot better than you. But why do you care anyway? You probably have plenty of girls on the side."
"Kameko stop, I know he doesn't. Hiei's not like that." Kagome's voice was soft but it effectively stopped the girl from baiting him. Kameko wouldn't understand the danger she was putting herself in talking to him like that. "It's true then. It really was Yusuke?" Kagome stared down at her hands. She felt defeated, unsure of how they would ever move past this. She couldn't even bear to look at Hiei and see the hatred, hurt and betrayal in his eyes. "I thought it was you. I really did, I would never.... Oh God what have I done?"
Hiei walked up to her, wanting to give her one last chance to tell the truth. He didn't want to believe she'd betray him like that but he had to go with what he saw before him. "You slept with the Detective. Tell me why." There had to be an explanation for all of this somehow. Maybe it was Yusuke that was drunk. He couldn't see him forcing himself on her, the only smell of fear he could detect was what she was radiating now. So it was unlikely that happened but he still needed to know. "Don't even think about lying to me, I know you weren't drunk. Did he force you?"
Kagome shook her head. "No he didn't. Please believe me, I thought that it was you with me. If I had known it was Yusuke I would have never slept with him." Even as she said the words she knew that he wouldn't believe them. There were no similarities between the two men, he had no reason to believe her.
Even now she was still claiming she thought it was him, he had no choice. Anger consumed him as he stared at the woman he loved. He thought about using the Jagan to go through her memories but it was beneath him to do so. She had made her choice and it obviously wasn't him. "Spare me your pathetic lies Kagome. If you wanted the Detective you should have said something a long time ago." Hiei turned and walked away from her. He had to leave otherwise he was going to do something he would later regret. He had reached the foot of the stairs before he stopped, his gaze fixed on the floor. "I won't abandon the child, it will be provided for but know this, it's over between us. Do not expect me to take you back."
Somehow she had known that he would say that and she couldn't say that she blamed him. She deserved it after all, she just couldn't understand how she had thought Yusuke was Hiei and why he would have slept with her to begin with. She didn't even look up when she heard him come down the stairs once more. No doubt he had retrieved his katana. He almost never wore it within the house. She jumped when the door slammed and she knew that she had lost him. The best thing that had ever happened in her life was gone now and she was alone once more.
Kameko knelt down in front of her and placed her hand over Kagome's. She couldn't imagine the hell the girl was going through now. She felt guilty for her part in this, she had encouraged Yusuke on, not knowing how destructive it would be to her. "Kagome I'm sorry. If he loves you he'll come back." She had to rethink her assessment of the man, even just a little. He had said he would continue to provide for them even after what had happened. Maybe there was something to him that she wasn't seeing.
Kagome shook her head, no he wouldn't. He would never forgive her for this, he meant every word that he said. It was over and no she was alone. How would she go on without him? She didn't know what to do anymore, the only thing she was certain of was that she would be a mother soon. A single mother and the child's father now hated her. How would she explain to her child why it's parents weren't together? Her stomach gave a lurch, whether it was protesting the days events or the fact that she hadn't eaten she wasn't sure. But it was making it's displeasure known. "I think I'm going to be sick."
Kagome stood up and ran to the bathroom slamming the door behind her. She fell to her knees in front of the toilet, ignoring the sharp pain in her legs as they came into contact with the hard tile. She barely registered Kameko's presence next to her as her stomach heaved. Her friend held her hair out of the way as she knelt there shaking. "It hurts. Why does it have to hurt so much?"
"I don't know Kagome, I've never been any good at relationships. I know you love him and I could see he cared for you. Maybe things will work out but if it doesn't you have others who love you. We'll help you get through this." Right now Kagome needed her friends around her, though Kameko was at a loss of what to do for her. Yusuke would be a good bet for comforting her once more if it weren't for the fact that this revolved around him. "Are you done?"
Kagome nodded and flushed the toilet before standing with the girls help. She walked over to the sink and proceeded to rinse her mouth out. She stared at her reflection in the mirror and decided that she looked like death warmed over. She had seen corpses that looked better than she did. She looked over to Kameko and sighed. "I think I'm going to go lay down for a bit. You're welcome to stay if you want, if not I'll see you later."
"I'll stay, it's almost lunchtime anyway so why don't you go rest for a bit and I'll make you something to eat." Kameko wasn't about to leave the girl alone now. She followed Kagome out of the bathroom and watched as she went up the stairs to her bedroom. Shaking her head she walked into the kitchen to see what there was to make. She hadn't eaten at the party and breakfast had been skipped. No doubt the girl had to be starving and now she had a baby to consider.
Kagome shut the door quietly behind her and walked over the the dresser, taking out a change of clothes. She peeled her pants and blouse off dropping them into the hamper. She pulled the tank top and shorts on and then walked over to the bed, sitting heavily on it. Her hands lingered over the black fabric of Hiei's cloak. "He must have forgotten to take it with him." She gathered it to her chest and sat there for several long minutes. He'd come back, for his belongings at least. She had no hopes that he'd want to keep living there. It would hurt the both of them to much for him to do so. Sighing heavily Kagome laid down and closed her eyes hoping for sleep to claim her.
She opened her eyes some time later and sat up, wincing as body began cramping again. It was nothing new, she had learned to adjust to her bodies new quirks. They were just as annoying as all hell, she almost always cramped some after sex and from what she remembered Yusuke hadn't exactly been gentle towards the end. Her stomach didn't feel that well either, she wouldn't be surprised if she had another trip to the bathroom to make soon. It was then that she heard Kameko's voice coming from downstairs telling her that lunch was ready. Truthfully she had no appetite but she knew that she had to try eating anyway, even if it was just going to come up again later. "I'll be down in a minute!"
She walked out of the room and down the hallway. Even with her stomach protesting she had to admit that whatever it was that Kameko was cooking smelled good. Perhaps just maybe she'd be able to eat something after all. She started to make her way down the stairs when she felt another cramp, stronger than before. It was enough to make her wince in pain. "God that hurts!" She was going to have to remember to yell at Yusuke for that as well assuming she could ever look him in the face again. Her foot found the next step down when she felt something warm begin to run down her leg. She reached down with a shaking hand. She was scared, very scared as she looked at her hand that came back covered in blood. "Kameko!" Her voice broke as she called for her friend, another cramp hitting her causing more blood to run down her leg. She leaned back against the wall, she was feeling dizzy and knew that if her friend didn't get there soon she was going to fall. She blinked as her vision went hazy and she tried to sink to the floor knowing she was about to pass out. Her foot slipped off of the step causing her to fall forward. Kagome shrieked as she hit the railing and felt it break under her weight.
