Author's Note from Ryukotsusei: A reviewer recently made the comment asking us not to malign Keiko's character. I don't see it as that, far from it. I'd like to say first and foremost that any woman if she truly cared for her boyfriend would be hurt if she found out he cheated on her, no matter the circumstances. So if anyone is expecting Keiko to smile about it and say oh okay well it's not important I forgive you then you might not want to read any further. We're trying to keep reactions realistic here and since nothing like this was portrayed in the series it's up to interpretation as to how they would all react. With that said, we hope you enjoy this chapter.
Chapter Eleven
Yusuke looked up from the television, Kagome had been sitting there at the window for the longest time. She hadn't moved from that spot since she had gotten up that morning and it was beginning to bother him. He knew what she was waiting for, it had been just over two weeks since Hiei had left and there was still no sign of him. Yet she still continued watching for him, unwilling to give up on the hope that he would come back. Somehow he knew that this was going to happen, he had known the moment Hiei said that he was leaving again and it infuriated him. How much more would she be able to handle before she went insane?
He decided that he wasn't going to wait around for it to happen. She had recovered from her overdose and for all intents and purposes to the outside world she was healthy, if a bit sad looking. What she needed was a break, some time to get out of the house and do something fun. He thought about it for a few minutes, it would need to be something she could become engrossed in. A movie could work he decided, it would get her mind off of Hiei and it wouldn't stress her out. The question was what sort of movie should they see? A romance was out, not only did Yusuke abhor those but it was likely to remind Kagome of her predicament. Likewise an action movie would probably do the same thing.
Yusuke stood up and went into the kitchen, grabbing the newspaper off of the table. Maybe it would be best to see what was playing first and then pick one. In moments he had the movie section out and was skimming the titles. Many of them he had already seen and wouldn't be suitable for what he wanted. His eyes settled upon a comedy titled Fun With Dick And Jane. He wasn't sure what it was about but he recognized the star of the movie and knew it was likely to be funny. He checked his watch, they had forty five minutes before the show started. Plenty of time to get there if they started getting ready now. With a plan in mind he walked back into the living room. "Alright Kags I don't know about you but I'm bored out of my damned mind. Let's go!"
Kagome looked up at him, he had startled her when he started speaking. She hadn't even heard him approach, she knew she hadn't been paying attention but still. Yusuke moved like a bull in a china shop quite often. She must have been deeper in thought than she had figured. She turned back to the window and sighed, she really didn't want to go anywhere. Hiei had been gone a long time and she hoped that he would return soon. What would he think if she was gone, out with Yusuke no less? "I don't know Yusuke, I'd rather not go anywhere. You don't have to stay here though, I'll be fine on my own."
Yusuke shook his head, she should know by now that he could see straight through her and he wasn't going to let her sit there and mope. It just wasn't happening. "Oh no you don't and don't you give me that look Kagome. You are coming with me and if I have to carry you myself, I will." He grabbed her hand and began to pull her off of the window sill. It would be there when they got back and if she insisted she could resume brooding them. The next two hours however were his. When she began to pull her hand out of his he sighed, she was going to make this difficult. "Alright you asked for it. Don't say I didn't warn you!" Yusuke picked her up, hoisting her up and over his shoulder as he made his way down the hallway and to the front door.
Kagome shrieked as she felt her feet leave the ground. It was humiliating being carried like a sack of potatoes yet he didn't seem to care in the least. She squirmed trying to get out of his grip. She had no desire to be seen out in public like this! "Dammit Yusuke put me down! I don't want to go!" She mentally cheered as she could feel his grip slipping, she was almost free. However those mental cheers turned to a gasp of embarrassment as his hand landed on her backside in an effort to hold her steady as he readjusted his grip. "Get your hand off of me you pervert!"
Yusuke smirked at her reaction and called back over his shoulder. "Would you rather I let you fall?" He really hadn't been trying to get fresh with her but it was an added bonus that he wasn't going to object to. It was her fault anyway, if she had only come quietly then she wouldn't have been felt up. "Really Kagome, we'll just be gone a couple of hours. There's a movie I want to see and I won't leave you alone. You'll have fun, I promise."
Kagome did a decent imitation of a growl, proof of just how much time she had spent in Hiei's company. Unfortunately it just wasn't that impressive considering her current position at the moment. And besides that, he still hadn't removed his hand. "I told you I don't want to go. What do you need, someone to hold your hand for you during the scary parts or something? And get your hand off my ass! Put me down too while your at it!"
Yusuke finally acquiesced to her demands and set her down on the ground. Before she could run though he braced both hands on the wall beside her, trapping her in place. "Fine your down but your going whether you want to or not. It's up to you whether you walk or get carried." He nearly laughed at the look that crossed her face just before she sighed, pouting at the injustice of it all. His eyes dropped to her lips and he wanted nothing more than to kiss her. He began to lean forward but stopped when she turned her head from him, a look of sadness crossing her face. He cursed at himself for his stupidity, she wasn't anywhere near ready for something like that and Hiei was still in the picture even if he wasn't there. She wouldn't be disloyal to him again. "Come on, get your shoes on. We're wasting time, the movie starts soon."
Kagome wasn't sure this was such a good idea, she had known exactly what he was about to do and she couldn't let it happen. Hiei was coming back and they were going to work things out. It didn't matter how much she cared for Yusuke she couldn't allow him to think that something could happen between them again. She had lost too much the last time and she refused to risk all of that again. She bit her lip, indecision gripping her before nodding silently. "Alright Yusuke."
He once more took her hand, leading her outside once they were both ready to go. He had heard the regret and sorrow in her voice, already he was screwing things up for her. He wanted her to forget about Hiei, not dwell on everything that had happened. He tried to keep his voice light giving no indication of his inner turmoil as they walked together. It didn't miss his attention how she continue looked about as if she was looking for someone. More than once he felt her powers flare, seeking out one person in particular and he heard the barely audible sigh she gave when she came up empty once more. "I'm sure he's okay Kagome, you don't need to worry about him."
She nodded, not surprised that he knew what it was that she was doing. "I know Yusuke. I just.. miss him. he should be back soon. Right?" Kagome looked up at him, the cocky grin that was usually in place was now gone. Instead was something that she couldn't quite describe, it was almost a combination of longing and frustration. She looked away from him once more, she should have known better than to say something.
Yusuke wasn't sure if he should say what was on his mind or not. He didn't want to crush her hopes yet at the same time it was wrong for her to believe in something that might never come true. He kept his voice neutral, unwilling to expose just how torn her was about it. "He should but.. What will you do if he doesn't?" He waited to hear her answer, it was something that he needed to know.
Kagome was silent for a long time as she considered his question. It had been something she had thought about a lot before Hiei had found her, it was what had lead to her attempting to commit suicide. She didn't want to be without him. If he was gone, she had no reason to go on anymore. But now she had that stupid promise to Kurama, she couldn't kill herself and he knew it. It had been why he had demanded it from her in the first place. The wording however left a few options open to her if it ever came down to it. While she couldn't kill herself there was nothing saying that someone or something else couldn't do it for her. But she wouldn't tell them that, it was her last option if once more she found herself alone. "I don't know Yusuke, I just don't know."
Yusuke had a feeling she was lying to him but didn't push the issue. They had arrived at the theater and it was time to get in line. Kagome still had no idea what they were going to see but it didn't much matter to her. It came as a bit of a surprise when he chose a comedy, every time they had all gotten together for going to the movies it had been either an action or a horror movie. Unless Keiko made the choice that is. Her mind shied away from that thought, Yusuke still hadn't said much about what had happened between him and Keiko. Truthfully she wasn't sure she wanted to know.
"Kagome?" Yusuke watched as she flinched when he said her name, he had already paid for their tickets and been standing next to her waiting for the past minute but she hadn't noticed him. He wondered what she had been thinking to cause her to go that deep again. "Welcome back, are you alright?"
Kagome wanted to kick her own ass for spacing out yet again. "Oh yes, I'm fine. Just wondering what the movie is about, that's all." She tried giving him a bright smile but she knew that it wasn't likely to fool him and she was right. It didn't reach her eyes. He didn't say anything though and for that she was thankful. Yusuke lead her over to the concession stand, already digging his wallet out of his pants. Kagome looked at him speculatively, it wasn't often that he paid for everything but in this case it was necessary. He hadn't let her grab her purse before he pulled her out the door.
Yusuke moved to the counter when their turn came up and the cashier asked what they wanted. He looked over to Kagome and winked at her before giving their order. "Two large cokes, a large popcorn with extra butter and a box of snocaps." He nearly laughed at Kagome's surprised look, clearly she hadn't expected him to remember what she usually got when she went to the movies. She had often accused him of having the attention span of a gnat, well this time he proved that theory wrong. He had paid plenty of attention to watching her before this.
He handed her the box of Snocaps and one of the cokes, then proceeded to pay for their snacks. For once he was glad that he still maintained some control over his former territory in the Makai. If made things like this possible, even if it was a bitch to convert Toranin currency over. "Alright, let's go watch us a movie."
Kagome thanked him and then followed him down the passageway to where their movie would play. It was dimly lit when they went in but the movie hadn't started just yet. The room was only about half filled leaving Kagome to wonder if it was any good or if it had just been playing for a while and the first rush to see it had already past. Yusuke lead them about halfway down the walkway until he found the spot that he was looking for. There were people around but no one especially close. He didn't want her to feel crowded or overwhelmed. They took their seats and within five minutes the movie began.
Yusuke looked over at her as the previews were playing, her eyes riveted to the screen. He listened half heartedly to the narrator as it described a love story filled with heartbreak, paying more attention to Kagome. When the shadows of sorrow began to cover her he slipped his hand into hers, giving it a gentle squeeze of reassurance. No matter what Hiei decided, he was determined to always be there for her. She gave him a slight smile in response, knowing what had prompted the move. She wasn't going to ruin his fun by crying. Steeling herself for the next hour and a half she turned her attention back to the screen and tried her best to forget about her troubles. At least for a little while.
Two hours later saw them out of the movie theater. Yusuke had said that he was hungry and wanted to stop someplace to eat. Either way was fine with Kagome, she wasn't particularly hungry but she knew Yusuke on the other hand would be starved. Never mind that he had eaten two large popcorns while they were there in addition to his drink. She wondered where on Earth he put everything he ate at times. She was surprised at the restraunt he had chosen to eat at. She had only been there once before when her family had come out to visit. It had taken a miracle to get Hiei to agree to go through he finally conceded.
They hadn't returned since, even though the food was delicious, the sole reason being that they had run into Hojo there. He was attending the University and he had been there with a couple of his close friends. Hiei had taken an instant dislike to the man and even went so far as to threaten him if he came near Kagome again. Of course Hojo didn't understand why he was being threatened and had immediately tried to stand up to him which made things even worse. Needless to say Kagome had to do some quick thinking that would have made Kurama proud of her in order to keep the manager from throwing them out and Hojo from calling the police. Now she was going here with Yusuke, she could help but think would wonders never cease. She never pictured him going to a place like this.
They were quickly shown to their seats although they were given a disdainful once over, no doubt due to their clothing. Had she known she would be coming here she would have dressed in something other than jeans and a t-shirt. Though it was doubtful that Yusuke would have given any attention to his clothing, she had yet to see him dress up even once. The menu's were placed in front of them while their drink orders were taken. Kagome's voice was light and teasing after their waitress left. "So Yusuke, I didn't know you frequented places like this. I took you more for the burgers and beer type."
Yusuke laughed at that, it was true he didn't come to these places but he figured it would be a nice way to end the evening. He also knew that Kagome enjoyed going out to nicer places. "Oh sure, I go to places like this all the time. This is the only one that hasn't kicked me out yet though so enjoy it while you can!"
Kagome rolled her eyes at this, even after all this time it would seem he still had that reputation he was so proud of. "I'm not surprised somehow. You'd better behave yourself while we're here."
Yusuke picked up his napkin and tossed it at her. "What do you mean? I always behave myself!" Kagome broke out in a fit of laughter at this and snatched the piece of cloth off of her shoulder where it had landed. He saw the disapproving look he was getting from their sever but he didn't care. It was worth it to see her laughing again. "Hey! Don't laugh at me, it's true!"
"Right, keep believing that Yusuke." Kagome giggled again at his affronted look and handed him back his napkin. She pulled her hand back quickly when he swiped at her with it. "You know you're going to make me start wondering where I can get a collar like that. A couple of good jolts and I bet I could get you doing anything I asked!"
Yusuke smiled and shook his head. She didn't need a collar to do that, all she had to do is ask and if he could do it, he would. If nothing else, just to make sure she stayed happy. The light that had been missing from her eyes for so long had just finally started to come back and he'd be damned if he watched it disappear again.

Keiko was standing next to Kanaye, finally haven't given in to his requests to take her out to eat. She really hadn't wanted to but now with finals over she had run out of excuses to put him off. Then when he had told her where they were going she had been surprised. She had wanted to go here for the longest time and Yusuke had always told her that she could go if she wanted but he just wasn't comfortable in places like this. It was something that she had given up on ever happening. She looked up at the man who had brought her. He was nice enough she supposed, a good conversationalist but she just didn't feel ready for another relationship.
She had been doing a lot of thinking recently about how things had gone wrong with Yusuke. She knew that she should have seen it happening, the way he had distanced himself from her but she hadn't thought much of it. He always had been independent, even more so since he had come back from the Makai. Maybe she had expected to much of him, she wasn't sure. From what she had seen of Kagome's relationship with Hiei the girl didn't ask much of him with him traveling back and forth.
Keiko's head snapped suddenly to the left with a familiar laughter reached her ears. It couldn't be, he refused to come here before and he had no reason to be here now. It had to be her imagination but it didn't stop her from looking just the same. Her heart clenched as she saw him sitting there, mostly hidden from view by a large plant. He was talking to someone but she couldn't see who. He looked happy, happier than she would have expected based on the last time she had seen him. He had shown up one evening with Kuwabara to gather the rest of his things. He hadn't said two words to her while he was there, choosing to ignore her completely.
Without realizing it her feet had begun to carry her towards him, needing to know who he was with. She walked around the plant and the second person came into view. Her hands clenched at the sight, she should have known. He was here with Kagome, the woman who had somehow manage to steal him away from her. Keiko had come to terms with the fact that Kagome hadn't started what had happened but it didn't stop it from hurting any less. She could even feel some sympathy for the girl, knowing what she had lost. But now they were sitting there looking so happy together.
Kagome looked up when a slight movement caught her eye. She locked gazes with Keiko and paled, she hadn't expected to run into the woman so soon. She looked down into her hands, would Keiko come over? Would the girl give her a chance to explain or would she scream and yell at her. It couldn't possibly look good for the two of them, being together like this.
Yusuke immediately noticed her change in mood and wondered why. He looked over to where she had been staring, his smile disappeared. Based on the look Keiko was wearing he knew that this could get ugly. He stood up and walked over to Kagome's side, placing a hand on her shoulder. Once he was sure he had her attention he spoke lowly but made sure to keep his tone soothing. He didn't want her thinking he was mad at her. "It's okay Kagome, we can go somewhere else if you want or I can take you home. Your choice."
Any appetite Kagome had before was now gone, she didn't want to be there any more. She knew she should have stayed home. Nodding slightly she stood and looked up at him uncertainly. Their server came up then with a questioning look and set the drinks on the table. Yusuke pulled out his wallet and handed the server some money, it was enough to cover their drinks and then some. "My date's not feeling well so I'm taking her home."
Keiko gasped when she heard him openly admit that they were dating. It certainly hadn't taken him long to move on from her did it? She waited until they had moved closer before she walked up to him and stood in their way with a look of anger and hurt on her face. She ignored the cold look that Yusuke was giving her, instead taking the opportunity to tear into him. "I guess what you said before about it being nothing more than a mistake was a lie huh Yusuke? It's funny how fast you moved on without me. I guess I shouldn't be surprised, you did sleep with her after all."
Yusuke watched Kanaye walk up to stand beside Keiko but didn't pay any attention to him. Instead he was dividing his attention between Keiko and Kagome. "Shut the hell up Keiko, in case you've forgotten I don't have to explain myself to you anymore. Now move, I'm taking her home."
"Yeah like I could forget about that Yusuke, but then again you never gave me any good explanations when we were together either." Keiko shrugged off the hand Kanaye put on her shoulder. She didn't need to be coddled, this fight was a long time in coming and she would not be denied. "Do you really think she'll stay with you for long? Why would she, she's got Hiei remember? Just remember this when she goes back to him, I won't take you back!"
Kagome stepped forward , Keiko had their relationship all wrong. "No Keiko, our relationship isn't like that. He was just trying to keep me company until Hiei comes back." She wasn't going to stand between the two of them if they decided to work things out between them. She wanted Yusuke happy and if that meant being with Keiko then she was all for it.
"Just keep telling yourself that Kagome. I'm sure he had every intention of keeping you company, just like he did at the party. I bet you would let him too wouldn't you?" Anger was making Keiko say exactly what she had been thinking ever since she had found out about the two of them. She was hurting and seeing the two of them just brought it all back full force. It didn't matter that they had an audience, she wanted to hurt them just as badly as they had done to her.
Kagome wasn't going to stand there and let Keiko throw accusations around. She had every right to be mad but she wasn't the only one who had been affected by this. She started forward only to be stopped by Yusuke holding onto her. Her voice wasn't much more of a growl when she spoke to the girl again. "No, that night shouldn't have happened but neither of us knew what was going on so you can keep your assumptions to yourself. We've all lost something here in case you've forgotten so just shut up!"
Keiko seemed surprised at the anger she heard in Kagome's voice and looked back and forth between the two of them when she noticed that Yusuke was staring at Kanaye with an odd expression. He couldn't seriously be upset that she was going out to eat with him could he? He was doing the same damned thing and at least she hadn't slept with her date! "Do you have a problem with me going out with someone Yusuke? You look a little jealous."
Yusuke gave her a cold smile before turning back to the man. "Actually I couldn't care less that your dating him. You're life, however I think me and Kanaye have something else to... talk about and it has to do with the party." He saw the look of confusion that past over Keiko's face and the fear that appeared in the man's eyes. He knew then that he was on to something and it was confirmed when Kanaye turned and bolted back towards the front door. With a smirk Yusuke set off after him at a brisk walk, knowing that once he was out of the building the man didn't have a prayer of escaping him.
