Chapter 15
While Kurama was thoroughly enjoying the fact he was once more in control Youko as practically fidgeting with impatience. As much as one could fidget without a body anyway. He was more than ready to finish up this shopping trip and head home to his mate but Kurama seemed to be dragging it out as much as possible. It was maddening.
`You know Youko when we are done here we might want to stop by the shrine for a few minutes. I am certain Kagome's mother has begun to wonder how her daughter is doing and when she is coming home.'
`Absolutely not, you're just trying to keep me contained longer. If you have to you can call her mother from the house and explain what is going on.'
`Do you think that is wise Youko? News that your daughter was found on the brink of death isn't something that is best told over the phone.'
`Maybe not but Kagome is alone right now. Suppose something happens? We aren't there to protect her!'
`Nothing is going to happen to her this moment Youko, calm down.'
`You don't know that!'
Kurama sighed and gave up the fight for the moment. They would make it a point to contact her mother in the next day or two. He was certain her mother was worried sick by now even though she was more than likely used to her long absences.
He was right, though her mother had the suspicion that her daughter had come home even though she had no idea where she was currently. When morning dawned on the day Kagome reappeared it had been Souta who had noticed the massive amounts of blood on the ground. He had immedietly called to his mother, fear evident in his voice. Kagome had come home banged up on more than one occasion but never had he seen this much blood in one spot.
His mother had come running to see what would instill such fear in her son's voice. Even she wasn't prepared for the bloody mess that awaited her. School was forgotten for Souta that day as he raced back into the house and changed out of his uniform. There was no way he was going to go to school when his sister was out there somewhere, possibly dying.
The path wasn't that hard to follow really, even if the blood had become sporadic since she wasn't standing in one place for long. They were able to follow to the park she went to and then into the woods. It was there almost all trace of her vanished. Souta however refused to give up and continued on, searching until he found the moss she had rested on. There all sign of the girl disappeared.
Had she been found by someone? They had no way of knowing at the moment, it was obvious that she was no longer there. Someone surely had to have picked her up. Resigned they headed for home to see what they could find out about the missing girl.
Calling the police was out of the question. Problems would arise with explaining how exactly the girl could have ended up hurt. It wasn't something that any of them wanted or needed to be subjected to. However there was nothing stopping them from calling all of the hospitals in the area and asking if Kagome was a patient.
When no sign of her had been found by that means real terror struck her family members. Kagome was out there somewhere in great pain and there was no way to know where she was. Her mother prayed hard that somehow news would come to them about her whereabouts or that Inuyasha would come through the well. He would be able to track Kagome down no matter where it was that she was being kept wouldn't he?
She couldn't have known that Inuyasha was dead, killed out of self defense by the woman who loved him.

Hiei had watched as Kurama had left the apartment. He was tempted to follow after him but he was still uncertain as to how Youko was fairing at the moment. The kitsune's aura seemed to be in a state of agitation once more. Probably from having to leave the girl he decided.
He wondered if Kagome had felt his presence yet. It was unlikely, he was masking his aura. Even though she had managed to sense him before when they were both in the past, she was considerably drained at the moment. It was likely that she wasn't paying close attention to her surroundings and that combined with her physical injuries she was vulnerable.
Hiei decided this once he would stay and keep watch over the girl in Kurama's absence. It wouldn't do for the girl to be injured somehow because she had been left alone. It was unlikely for anyone to come for her in this time but there was always the possibility. Especially since she still held onto that cursed jewel that had ruined her life and those of her friends.
So he took up his watch over the girl concealed in a tree. Hopefully Kurama would be back soon, he didn't want to be found watching over a human. What would Yusuke and Kuwabara think if they knew what he was doing right now? He didn't want to think of the hell they would give him over his concern about a human girl.
Why was he so concerned anyway? Was it because Kurama had taken an interest in the girl? Shaking his head he settled back into his tree to think. Sure, that had to be part of it but not all of it. He was loath to admit but the girl had gained his respect. Most humans would have rolled over and died with what had happened. She had been determined to fight to get home even as her body was giving out. It was that respect that prompted him to watch out for her like he often did for his sister Yukina.
**************************************************************
Kurama was finally on his way home, two bags of groceries in hand. Youko was grumbling in the background about slow, controlling humans. Kurama had finally tired of the kitsune's antics before they had left the store and told him in no uncertain terms he wasn't getting to come back out immedietly when they got home. He wasn't going to let Youko push him around, perhaps making him wait until the groceries were put away would be enough incentive for the Foxes continued good behavior next time.
Youko was far from amused at this prospect. It was going to rapidly degenerate into a contest of wills soon. Kurama unlocked the door and stepped inside, it was quiet in the house. Kagome was more than likely still asleep.
As soon as he had set the bags on the counters Youko attempted to seize control of their body. He wasn't going to back down from this challenge. Shuichi thought he could control him eh? Youko was fully intending on seeing just how in control his human half was by the time he was through.
Kurama grabbed his head, trying to fight off the ache in his head as Youko attempted to push his way to the front. His red hair became streaked with silver, the air around them shimmering as the battle for dominance was fought.
Kagome sat up in bed, the strange sensation she had felt when he had left had returned. She still couldn't place it. It felt so much like him but then so different it left her confused. It was certainly demonic. He had said something about going to the store? It meant she was alone and unprotected. She clutched the jewel around her neck. She had to protect the shards at all cost!
It was then she felt her saviors aura, and it was angry. Something was going on out in the kitchen! Perhaps he was in trouble? Weak as she was she couldn't allow him to be hurt because of her. If it was her and the jewel they were after then it was her they would deal with. If luck was on her side she could purify the threat out of existence before it had a chance to take the jewel. Then he would be safe as well.
She got out of bed shakily, unsure of if her legs would hold her. She held onto the side of the bed and slowly made her way to the door. She had to hurry though, every moment she took could mean her savior was in trouble. Steeling herself against the fatigue she felt she quietly opened the door and stepped out. She would need the element of surprise against this potential threat.
Creeping along the wall leaning against it for support she made her way to where she felt the disturbance was coming from. Her heard pounded in her chest even as she tried to push the fear away that she felt. This could very easily end up killing her if she wasn't careful. She didn't have the energy to spare but it was something she had to do.
Hiei had almost decided to leave his tree. Kurama had come home and could now assume his role of well…. Whatever it was that he considered himself to the girl. Something stopped him though, a nagging in his mind he couldn't quite place. He observed the house and noticed the spike in energy from the kitsune. He watched with interest as Youko challenged Shuichi for control of their body.
However when he noticed the faint energy spike come from the girl he grew concerned. She obviously felt the battle going on in Kurama's head and had determined it to be a threat based upon the fear that he felt pouring off of her. If Kurama wasn't careful he was going to end up being purified. Pulling away from the tree he darted towards the house. Intent on avoiding the upcoming disaster that was going to happen.
Kagome had made her way unnoticed to the kitchen. Kurama had been so focused that neither of them had been alerted to the girl's presence. She was unprepared for the sight that greeted her.
A man, who she vaguely remembered seeing once was standing there, obviously fighting something. She had no idea who he was or why he was there. She watched both fascinated and terrified as his red hair alternated with silver streaks and he grew considerably taller. Horrible mental images flooded her mind, all of the times she had seen Naraku absorbing other demons. Still, this didn't exactly resemble what had happened in those instances. Perhaps there was another explanation. However when he grew ears and a tail she couldn't stand to watch any more. Somehow this man had managed to absorb the kitsune who had saved her and he was trying to break free. She had to help him!
She had taken two steps towards Kurama, to do what exactly she wasn't certain but she would attempt to help somehow. A black blur materialized next to her gripping her arm. Kagome turned her head in surprise, her eyes widening when she saw Hiei. She couldn't believe he was here. She knew he couldn't have come through the well so that could only mean he had lived to this era. And she had run into him again? Or rather he had run into her. She said the only thing that came to mind at that particular moment.
“It's You!”
Two words that drew bother Kurama and Youko's attention from the internal battle that was being waged. Youko's surprise at Kagome and Hiei's presence did not last long however. Once focus had come back to him he had smelled the fear that had blanketed the girl. That combined with the fact that Hiei still had a grip on her arm and the surprise that had registered in her voice was enough to snap his control.
Youko took advantage of Kurama's momentary surprise and seized control of their body, immedietly changing. Hiei's eyes widened a fraction when he saw the fury darken Youko's eyes, he knew then that getting involved in this entire mess might have been a mistake that could cost him his life.
Youko didn't bother pulling his rose whip for this. They were in too close of quarters and with Kagome being in the room it was too dangerous, especially if she moved into the path of the upcoming battle. Instead he moved with lightning speed towards the fire apparition, intent on rending him apart with his claws if necessary.
Hiei leapt up and out of the way of the first attack. He was unsure as to why it was Youko was attacking him but he was not going to retaliate. He would only defend against his friend and hope that by some miracle Shuichi was able to get the fox under control.
`Youko stop this madness now!'
`You heard her! She knows him! He did this to her!'
`You can't know that for certain Youko! Stop it before you hurt him!'
`I intend on doing more than hurt him, he will die for what he did to my mate!'
“Kurama control yourself.”
Hiei's voice interrupted their internal conversation. He was doing a decent job of avoiding the attacks but the kitsune was still managing to score hits on him. This would have to end soon, he didn't want to attack his friend but he wouldn't allow himself to be butchered either.
Kagome watched in horror at what was happening. Here were two demons who obviously knew each other and had both saved her life. And until now she didn't know either of their names. Well, she knew one of them now. The mysterious one had called the kitsune Kurama. When the kitsune had scored a particularly hard hit that knocked Hiei down she acted. There had to be a reasonable explanation for this.
Without hesitation she placed herself in between the two of them shielding Hiei from Youko with her own body. He quickly pulled the attack he had been launching and regarded the girl. Surely she wouldn't protect the person who had very nearly killed her, would she?
Hiei was surprised at her actions. He would never have expected her to shield him. It rankled his pride some to think that the girl obviously thought that he was unable to defend himself. But she managed to stop the attack and for that he was thankful. Perhaps now they could figure out what the hell was going on.
Reviewer Responses:
Shabopo: You gave me my one hundredth review *Glomps you* Thank you! I'm trying to figure out how exactly to bring Sesshoumaru in. I'd like for him to play a part in this story but I am unsure of exactly how I plan to do it yet. I'd love to be able to draw the image of how I pictured that scene. However unless I have a model to go by my art work stinks quite badly. Maybe I can find a photo of two people in a similar position and draw from that. It would give me a base to start off of anyway. Then I would just need to find a way to scan my drawings in and post them. The light in my scanner fried :-/
Rabid: He helped him out because he was bored. He went because he thought it might perhaps be a challenge. And well, since he was there anyway he went ahead and altered the spell. I've started to get into the split problem with this chapter. In detail stuff will come with the next one. That just seemed to be a good spot to end it on, even if people are going to come trying to kill me for leaving it off.
ice_princess_1185: Yup, Naraku will be making an appearance shortly. Probably in the next three chapters although don't hold me to it. You never know what odd thoughts might pop up in my head that would push it back.
SessKaglovur: Yes, it will deserve the NC-17 rating by the time it is said and done. I intend on having the lemon scenes in there of MM and AFF but not FF. So you have your choice of which version you wish to read. I hate throwing lemon scenes in too soon unless there is a pressing reason for it. The lemons to me are an added bonus to a well thought out, well written story. None of my stories will ever revolve around the lemons. Hope that explains the rating :-)
crazy-punk-gurl: Leather would suit him just fine for me. Black leather pants. Yum. As for Naraku's death, I'm fairly certain that will be at Youko's hands although I have thoughts already for the final battle. Lets just say I have a surprise in mind that I hope everyone enjoys immensely. Assuming I can write it out anyway.
MoonlightdemonKita: Anything but the giant three headed dog!!! Here's the chapter lol
Arbor: Yusuke and Kuwabara will be making an appearance shortly though I'm not certain how I intend on portraying Youko at that point when they meet Kagome. Perhaps the jealous, possessive type. I dunno yet we will have to see what happens. I try not to be too scary. Well, maybe a little seeing as Kurama is wary of me. He thinks I'm going to bite him I think. I promised him it wouldn't be hard but eh…. I still have convincing to do. ;-)
Fogkit: Naraku being run over by a car might be amusing. Or maybe a bus would be more fitting. Pushed in front of a train? Hmm the possibilities would be endless. Thank you for recommending this fic, I am glad that you are enjoying it so much. I plan to have at least one more chapter out by tonight. Possibly two, we'll see how ambitious I end up getting. I fully intend on keeping this one under 30 chapters unlike my other stories. So I have a lot of work to put into the next few chapters.
Mija: Oh I can promise when that happens it is not going to be pretty at all. Hope this chapter is as enjoyable as the rest. :-)
Thanks for the reviews everyone! Until next time.
