Chapter 16

For the longest moment no one said a word, they all stared at each other. That all changed however when the strength that had been holding Kagome upright gave out and she started to drop to the ground. Youko caught her before she could hit, concern evident on his face.

Hiei wasn't the least bit surprised about that, what was surprising was the scent that Youko had released into the air. An obvious warning to him to keep his distance from the girl. It was very rare that Kitsune released that particular scent. It was specifically reserved for when a challenging male came upon a kitsune's mate. In essence it was a claim, warning the intruding male that he would fight to the death for that female and to not approach her. Hiei kept his distance, eying Youko warily. The girls scent was untainted, so he couldn't have mated the girl yet could he? He never claimed to be an expert on Kitsune mating rituals.

If by some chance they had mated it would explain why Youko had attacked him, at least in part anyway. He had touched the girl and Youko had reacted badly to that fact. However they were friends dammit, surely that counted for something didn't it? He was brought out of his thoughts when Kagome's voice cut through the silence.

“Well, at least I know your name now.”

Youko cradled the girl to his chest and carried her into the living room where he set her on the couch making sure he was comfortable. He stood beside her, unwilling to relax with Hiei in the room. He had dared to touch his mate again! He would refrain from attacking his partner for the moment, but there had better be a very good explanation as to how Hiei knew her and why she was in such poor condition with his smell on her when he found her.

“I suggest you explain yourself now before I lose patience.”

“Explain what Fox? You attacked me for no reason!”

No reason? Perhaps Shuichi was right then, he could sense the confusion that Hiei was feeling. If he had tried to kill the girl then he would know what it was he was speaking of. He would have the benefit of the doubt for the moment.

“How is it she was covered in your scent when I found her injured?”

Both Kagome and Hiei finally understood the reason behind the attack. Hiei and herself were the only ones who knew of what had happened that fateful night. Youko's sense of smell was likely equal to Inuyasha's if not better and of course since Hiei had carried her to the well Youko would know they had been in contact with each other.

“I didn't attack her if that's what you are insinuating Fox.”

“Tell me who did.”

It was not a request. It was his right as her mate to seek retribution for the injuries she sustained. It did not matter that he was not her mate yet when it happened. He would find the ones responsible and they would pay dearly.

Hiei looked to the girl, she was the only one who could fully explain what had happened that night since he had come at the end of it. She would have to tell the tale and judging by the pained look on her face she realized that as well. Youko laid a comforting hand on her shoulder and waited patiently. He wouldn't push her until she was ready to speak. It was likely to be a long day, explanations would take a while.

“It was Inuyasha.”

That startled Youko. Wasn't Inuyasha the one she was supposed to be in love with? What would cause him to turn on her if he returned the feelings as strongly as he had been lead to believe. If indeed it was Inuyasha he promised her silently the half breed would pay dearly. Not only for the physical wounds but the mental ones that such an attack would surely inflict.

“Perhaps you should explain from the beginning girl.”

Kagome looked at Hiei sharply. He knew her name and he still insisted that he wasn't going to use it. She was too tired to do more than glare at him though. Hiei would have laughed at the look she gave him if he didn't have as much control as he did.

“It's Kagome you jerk, although it has been five hundred years for you I guess I can let it slide this time. You never told me your name by the way.”

“Hn. It has been a while.”

Kagome continued to stare at him, unwilling to continue until he at least gave her his name. Really, it was better than saying hey you or any other potential sayings she could come up with. The silence dragged on and Youko was getting rather fed up with it. He wanted answers and he did not see the need to deny her the knowledge she was asking for. He sent a glare that clearly said he was not going to put up with these childish games to Hiei. His expression softened when he looked at Kagome.

“His name is Hiei, now will you please continue. I need to know what happened to you.”

“Well, to start I guess I have to tell you the story from the beginning. It gets complicated. To start with I am the Guardian of the Shikon no Tama and I have the ability to travel five hundred years in the past.”

This was information that both Hiei and Youko already knew about. Hiei from personal experience and Youko from his little chat with the Reikai official. However they did not interrupt her, allowing her to tell them in her own words about what had transpired n her journeys. A lot of the information she was giving them either Reikai did not know about or they were unwilling to share. Finally though Kagome reached the part that Youko was most interested in.

“Naraku attacked us, with the intent to kill me and take the jewel. Inuyasha managed to save me that time though I ended up with severe burns and injured ribs.”

“So that is why you had bandages on you when I found you.”

“Yes, we had been on our way back to the village when the incident happened.”

“So what happened?”

Kagome's eyes began to water, she couldn't help the tears that started to fall down her cheeks. Angrily she wiped them away, tears would not bring her friends back. And it would make her appear even weaker than she had already.

“I'm not entirely certain. I had taken pain killers that had put me to sleep when we stopped for the night. The next thing I knew of was when Inuyasha had picked me up and started attacking me. He wasn't himself though, his eyes weren't sane. It was almost like the times he had gone into a demon rage but not quite the same. Everyone was dead, he killed them all and he was going to kill me next. There was a woman there, one I had never seen before but she was watching like she was enjoying herself. I lost control of my powers for a moment, I didn't mean to but I killed him.”

“What of the woman?”

“I killed her Fox. I came upon the scene just as she purified the hanyou.”

“And was this your past self of had you managed to find a way through the well and just neglected to tell me?”

“Past self Fox.”

Youko was surprised that Hiei would have assisted the girl after having met her only one time. He wasn't known for being helpful out of the kindness in his heart. He couldn't help but question his motives. Was he interested in the girl? A surge of jealousy welled up and he glared at Hiei. His emotions must have come through in his scent for Hiei narrowed his eyes at the Kitsune.

`I'm not challenging your claim if that's what you are thinking.'

`Good, I'd hate to have to take you apart for lusting after my mate.'

`You'll have to explain to me how that happened.'

`I don't have to explain anything to you Hiei, remember that.'
That was the end of the mental conversation between the two demons. There were still unanswered questions that Youko had. Namely when had Hiei touched the girl that his scent would blanket her own?

“So what happened next?”

“I tried to get back to the well but was unable to on my own. Hiei carried me the rest of the way. And then I fell through, I'm not exactly sure how I got to where you found me. It's all a blur.”

It explained the scent issue though he was still curious as to why Hiei would help her. If he wasn't lusting after her what possible reason would he have had for doing so? None of it made sense to him but then Hiei was a hard one to figure out. They'd talk more about it at a later time he decided.

Another problem he had was the one responsible for at least the first attack and likely the second one as well was still alive in the past which meant there was a good possibility he was alive today. And as sadistic as this bastard was there was a chance that he would be coming after Kagome again. It was something he could not allow.

He thought of the possibilities. Kagome had told him that only her and Inuyasha had been able to travel through the well but he wasn't sure what the reason for it was. He supposed the subduing necklace could have been what allowed Inuyasha passage through, due to the bond they would have shared. Surely the bond of mates would be strong enough for the well to accept him. He was going to need to go to the past. One to gather information on his new enemy and two to strike at the bastard who had dared to hurt her. That would wait until Kagome was better though. He did not want her left alone at his home. When he went to the past he would leave her with her family. She would be safe enough there.

“If that is all of your questions, I have some of my own for you now.”

Hiei couldn't help the smirk that crossed his face. He had known this was coming, the girl wasn't going to blindly accept that what she witnessed in the kitchen was a delusion. It was time for the Fox to come clean on exactly what he was. It should prove to be amusing if nothing else.

Suddenly the confident, arrogant Spirit Kitsune was unsure of himself. It wasn't a feeling he particularly enjoyed. There was no way around it now, his mate deserved answers to her questions. Would she even remember what he had told her when he found her?

`Probably not Youko, she was pretty out of it when we found her.'

`I know. I can only hope that she accepts us as we are and doesn't hate me for what I did.'

`Youko if anyone could accept us I believe it is her. I don't think she will turn us away although don't be surprised if she is upset for a while.'

`You're right, it's best to get this over with and hope for the best.'

Kagome noticed the way Youko's mood changed and suddenly felt very uneasy. She wanted to comfort him for some reason, perhaps it was she did not like seeing anyone uncomfortable. Whatever was bothering him was something huge. She took his hand from her shoulder and pulled him down next to her on the couch. Once he was seated she did not let go of him.

“What do you remember of the night I found you Kagome?”

She thought about it for several long moments. That night was a haze to her, especially after she managed to climb out of the well. She vaguely remembered being in the woods somewhere and his voice. What was it that he had said? She wasn't certain but somehow it surely had something to do with how he was acting around her now.

“Not much, why?”

“You were dying Kagome. There was only one way for us to save you. I'm certain since you are a miko you understand how Miko and Demonic energy will refuse to work together?”

She nodded, they were on the opposite ends of the spectrum. The Miko energy would destroy any demonic energy it came into contact with. But his question did not give her any clue to the answers she was seeking.

“There is one instance where the two can work together but only if they are on the same power level. Otherwise one will dominate the other and still destroy it. I tried to explain this to you that night but you were pretty delusional at the time. I'm not surprised you do not remember unfortunately.”

“This is all well and good but what does that have to do with what happened?”

“Your body needed a massive infusion of energy in order to cope with the injuries you sustained. The only way to give you the energy you needed to stay alive was by bonding myself to you. I had to make you my mate Kagome.”

His words slowly sank in and her hands began to tremble. She wasn't sure how to take the news. She was now mated to a Kitsune she barely knew? How had he performed the bond? The only demon mating rituals she knew in depth about all involved taking a mate through the act of sexual intercourse and her body while sore was not sore in that area. She also did not believe that he would take advantage of her in that situation.

Her mind wandered. She had wanted to be with Inuyasha forever, to be his mate and stay by his side. She felt like she had betrayed his memory somehow. She had mated to another. Inuyasha might be dead but he still held her heart. What would he think of her if he knew? What would her family say when they found out? They had accepted Inuyasha after they had known him for a while. Youko was a complete stranger, who had secrets that she still didn't know about. Right then she wasn't sure if she wanted to know. She didn't know if she could handle any more surprises right that moment.

Youko's ears flattened back, he looked incredibly downcast over her reaction. He had felt the tremors in her hands when he told her, he could see the tears gather in her eyes. Guilt flooded through him for what he had needed to do but there was no other way for him to save her. He couldn't have allowed her to die. Somehow he had fallen in love with her even if his other half hadn't yet. It tore at his heart to see her hurting so.

`Give her time to accept it Youko, it's a shock for her.'

`I know Red, I'm not sure exactly how I expected her to take it.'

`I'd say she's taking it well so far all things considered. She isn't screaming at us yet.'

`You might have a point.'

He knew Shuichi was trying to make him feel better but thinking on it he decided he might actually prefer her rage to the tears he was seeing now. He freed one of his hands from hers and wiped them away.

`I'd give anything to be able to take this pain from her.'

Shuichi could only agree with him. While his feelings may not be as strong as Youko's his own were growing for her by the moment.

`Take her in your arms Youko, let her know she can rely on us when she needs it.'

Youko took her unresisting body into his arms and tucked her head underneath his chin and held her as she wept silently. He'd be glad when all the explanations were out in the open and they could move forward. They knew it would likely be a while before she could fully accept what had been done. All they could do was support her in the meantime.

Somehow Hiei wasn't finding this as amusing as he thought that he would. He was surprised that the Fox had indeed made the girl his mate, especially on their first real meeting. He was curious as to how it was done but as of this moment the Kitsune wasn't sharing that information. He felt sorrow for the girl. Her lover died by her own hands and she mated with another in the same night, even if it wasn't necessarily by her choice.

Author's Notes: I'd like to make a public announcement (Once again *le sigh*) MY EMAIL DOES NOT WORK!! I can view emails but my computer will NOT allow me to respond. So emailing me saying REPLY TO ME BECAUSE YOU HAVE IGNORED MY OTHER EMAILS is not going to get you a reply! I'm not trying to be rude here. If it is truly urgent that I get back to you I will find a way to another computer where I can respond. And no, asking when I plan on updating the other three fics is not considered urgent. I'm sorry if this sounds harsh but there is really nothing I can do about it at this time. I'm just thankful I have a computer I can even use to write these stories.

The other three fics will be updated when I get over my writers block. I'm sorry for the delay but inspiration is a fickle thing unfortunately. I will update them as soon as I possibly can.

Now onto the fun stuff, seriously replying to the reviews is more fun than writing the chapters some days.

Ralina: Somehow I can picture that. Naraku: You puny humans shall never defeat me! Police officer: Really now? BANG! Naraku: Oh… Fuck…. GASP! And he falls down dead.

Xoulblade: I'm walking around in a zombie like state now. I've forgotten what sleep is I think lol

ice_princess_1185: Yup, it was a good stopping point but hey, I updated quick lol

phoenixs_paiste: Yes I am evil mwahaha.. I look at it this way though, it got me more updates, even if they were to scream at me for where I stopped the chapter lol More explanations to come. We're only half way through lol

As always, thank you for the reviews. Hope you enjoyed this chapter as well. Until next time.
