Chapter 33
Kurama laid her gently on the bed and slid down next to her. No words were said, he just pulled her in to his chest and let her cry. Both Youko and himself were at a loss of what exactly to say to her. Neither had exactly run into this sort of situation before. True they had killed many, both demons and humans in Youko's case but they had never loved any of the ones they ended up having to kill. It was uncharted territory that they would have to make their way through the best way they knew how.
What concerned them the most was the stray thought they had picked up from her. Did she really think things would have been better if she had died? Even Kurama's heart clenched painfully at the thought of her dying. Youko would be devastated, and he would follow her into death shortly after if that were to happen. He didn't think that she would consciously try to end her life but would she become careless and take more chances risking herself? He could see her doing that easily, especially if it involved her protecting one of her friends in the process. She'd give up her life willingly and they both knew it.
`I feel so damned helpless right now. We can protect her from everything but herself.'
`I know Youko, the best we can do is try to talk her through this.'
`You're right but do you think it will work? You were always better dealing with the emotional problems whenever they have come up.'
`I wish I could give you an answer, I just don't know.'
`Do your best and we'll hope. If we have to we'll keep ourselves stuck to her around the clock until she feels better. I refuse to lose her.'
`I know how you feel Youko. Trust me, I know.'
Youko receded to think on what Kurama had just told him. It would seem that she had managed to steal his human counterparts heart as well now. He was glad for that, it was one less thing for him to worry about. If he hadn't been able to fall in love with the girl it would have made things much more difficult for everyone concerned. Now all he had to do was wait for her to fall in love with both of them. He felt she had made a good start but this setback might damage any progress that had been made. All they could do was wait and see.
“I can't say I know exactly what you are going through because I've never been in the same position. But I can tell what you're feeling, the bond is strengthening which allows me to feel what you feel. You can't keep going like this Kagome. You have to let the guilt go. It wasn't your fault.”
“But it was, if I had kept it under control just a little longer he wouldn't be dead now.”
“Maybe not, but you can't be blamed for defending yourself. Inuyasha has told you as much has he not?”
“He did but don't you get it? I killed him! Without meaning to! What is to stop me from doing the same to you or Youko? Or Shippou or Hiei or Kuronue for that matter? I could kill any of you without meaning to!”
“Love, I know I can speak for Youko here when I say we trust you. And we aren't ever going to put you in a position where your powers feel it is necessary to defend yourself.”
“You can't say that for certain Kurama. Inuyasha would have never attacked us willingly. What happens if something like that happens to you? You won't have a choice!”
It seemed that no matter what he said she was going to argue with him, she was so convinced that she was a danger to everyone around her. He knew that Hiei trusted her, no matter how cold and arrogant he sometimes acted. If he didn't trust her there was a strong possibility she would be dead already regardless of the fact that she was Youko's mate. The fact that Hiei didn't attack her when he was burned and blasted back by her barrier told him that much. Youko nudged him aside and took over their body. He was the one who could address her question and give her a solid answer that would ease her mind.
“What happens if something like that happens to me? Absolutely nothing love. So far there hasn't been anyone strong enough to my knowledge that could possess or perform mind control over my kind. Spirit Kitsune are the masters at mind manipulation. You've probably heard it referred to as Kitsune Seduction. Trust me, there is no one out there that could make me turn on you.”
“Are you sure? What about Shuichi?”
“My resistance to it would extend to him as well unless I was forced into dormancy like I was today. Any other time there would be no question about it, he'd be able to fight it off..”
He had absolutely no intention of them going back into the past again if they could help it except for when it was time for Kagome to collect the shards from the wolf prince. Being forced to sleep like that did not thrill him in the least. He couldn't protect her properly like that. Now they had the Tetsusaiga which helped but he still didn't like the idea of he wouldn't know what was going on.
“That still doesn't cover the others though. I could hurt them as well. Hell, I did hurt Hiei today and I didn't mean to. I didn't even feel the barrier spring up into place until he hit it.”
She couldn't help but wonder what if that had been Shippou that had hit the barrier instead of Hiei. She could have seriously injured if not have killed him. She wouldn't be able to live with herself if that had happened. The only reason she hadn't taken her own life was there was unfinished business to take care of with Naraku and the fact that Youko had tied his life in with hers. If she killed herself then it was sentencing him to death as well. She couldn't do that to him no matter how guilty she felt.
“It would take a lot more than that to keep Hiei down, it just irritated him that he got caught by it and that you managed to run off. And I'd be surprised if there was anyone out there that could take over Hiei's mind.”
That was certainly true, Youko wasn't certain that he would be able to do it if push came to shove. It would be one hell of a contest of wills if it ever happened. It wasn't something he ever had any plans on trying out that was for certain.
“I'd still feel better if I had more control over it.”
Regardless of what he said she was going to worry about it. She couldn't take anymore deaths on her conscious. Inuyasha may have forgiven her, but that didn't mean she was going to ever forgive herself. Nothing would ever take the pain away. The only thing she could hope was that time might dull it some so her heart didn't tear every time she thought about Inuyasha.
“We'll work on that. Between me and Hiei we might be able to help you get some control over it. If not then we will go to Koenma, perhaps he would know of someone that can help.”
That reminded him of the other thorn in his side that he had not heard from in a few days. Yusuke. It wasn't surprising really, knowing the Detective he probably enrolled in the witness protection program to escape his wrath. He should have known better, he can run all he wants. Youko fully intended on finding him and having a little chat about butting into his private life.
“Do you think that's a good idea? Have you gotten any idea on how he feels about our… relationship?”
“It's at best a last resort option at this point. He hasn't said much at this point but there is no telling what he thinks. Right now anyway he isn't going to interfere. Later on might be another story.“
“And if he does?”
“Let me worry about that when and if the time comes.”
Youko had already been thinking about what they would do if Koenma was determined to split them apart. It was something he refused to allow to happen. He didn't know how she would feel about it but if necessary they could always go into the Makai. He had lived the majority of his life on the run as had Kuronue. He was certain he would get no arguments from his partner if that was the decission that was made. They had several lairs that no one knew about, any one of them would make a good home for them if push came to shove.
His one concern besides protecting her in that case would be if Koenma sent the team after them to bring them in. He had no doubts that he could keep Yusuke and Kuwabara from finding them. Hiei was a whole different ballgame, but he was unsure if Hiei would hunt them on Reikai's orders. Somehow he was doubtful of it. If anything Hiei would probably be more inclined to lead them away from where they were.
Their families would be a problem of course. Shuichi would not want to leave his mother of course but there was no way they could bring her, just as there was no way they could bring Kagome's family even if they wanted to come. Koenma would certainly have their families watched to see if either of them returned home for a visit. It would mean they would likely have to break all ties with their families.
`Let's just hope it doesn't come to that Youko.'
`Agreed. Still, it might be worthwhile to return to the Makai to prepare if necessary.'
`If we left Kagome here again it would draw attention. And you know if we were to take her into Makai right now with no training Koenma would know.'
`Indeed, the first thing we need to do is get her started in her training.'

Kuronue was bored. Neither Youko nor Kagome had come back down and he was alone with nobody but Hiei for company who was currently occupying a windowsill in the living room. He hoped they would come back soon, perhaps then they could figure out something fun to do. Perhaps they would go on a heist, just like the old days. He smiled, remembering the fun that they had back then. He sighed, until then he just had to wait. And maybe bug the Fire Apparition. That could be fun as well.
“So Hiei, how did you meet Kurama?”
Hiei ignored the question, he was not in the mood to even attempt at being company for somebody. He continued staring out the window, wondering what the hell he was even still doing there. Truthfully he had no idea, he should have left as soon as Youko had taken the miko upstairs. Perhaps it was because he wanted to know if he had been able to bring her out of the guilt she was feeling.
Towards the end of the conversation it wouldn't have made one damned bit of difference if he had the Jagan or not. He would have felt the crushing weight of her emotions without it. Her feelings were bleeding through so heavily. It was so very similar to how he felt whenever he thought of the time Yukina had spent imprisoned. He hadn't protected her from being captured and the guilt ate away at him. It gave him something in common with the Miko.
“Well aren't you talkative?”
Hiei turned a glare on the bat demon that was pestering him. He was entirely too upbeat, reminding him greatly of Youko whenever he got into a mischievous frame of mind. It was extremely irritating. He much preferred when he was being calm, calculating, and above all quiet
Kuronue just shook his head and went back to reminiscing. How on Earth Kurama had become friends with such a cold, arrogant demon such as Hiei was beyond him.
Reviewer Responses: Not as many this time, I'm wondering where they ran off to. *Searches*
bloodbunny: Kuronue's mate is Kura-kun's-lovr and no we cannot eat her lol She was nice enough and let me have Kuronue's twin brother who is equally gorgeous and quite possibly a tad bit more perverted than his brother. Oh the fun we have!
crazy-punk-gurl: She'll get over him eventually but she's always going to feel responsible for what she did. I know I would.
inuyuyu_15: Fate, Destiny and a good solid push from the author. Lol
Shabopo: I saw that. Being unable to reply to it had me tearing my hair out. I think it would be one nasty battle myself. You're right about Kuronue laughing his head off. He's having a glorious time in fact, well aside from being bored right now. Hiei isn't being any fun at the moment. They probably won't get along very well which could be interesting. Especially seeing as the two sides of Kurama are likely to go more for the friend they are better acquainted with. Hmm wonder how I can play with that *evil grin* I totally agree about the review thing. I've noticed for my reviewers for the most part are all regulars. We had a massive influx of new reviewers when the pairing question was thrown out but they disappeared again.
Arbor: Less than a hip wiggle here I assure you. Come hither my Fox, I have a surprise for you… mwahaha.. poor kitsune wouldn't know what hit him :-D I tried to follow along the angst thing again but really there are only so many ways to have her break down crying onto his shoulder. There's gotta be a dialog somewhere and for some reason it just didn't want to come easy for me tonight. I've been working on this chapter since 4pm and just now finished it. Normally it's four hours for me tops and I post it. Evil chapter *bonks it with Botan's oar* And I wanna read so post post post pleaseeee :-D I'm finidng short, frequent chapters gain more reviews so…. But tis completely up to you my stalkerish friend. *Glomps you for the heck of it* mwahaha
Kagome-reincarnation: Don't kill me….. O.O I wouldn't be able to update anymore if you did.
angel-demoness7: Yep, hopefully her chat with Youko made her feel a bit better though it will be a while before she is really happy again.
Rabid: I cannot begin to tell you how utterly horrified that I am. I forgot your review! How utterly evil of me, I didn't mean it honest! *sobs Hysterically* please forgive me! *sends you chocolates and flowers as an apology* I cannot offer up a good enough excuse aside from being distracted. It won't happen again I swear.
Thanks to everyone who reviewed. Until next time.
