Chapter 36

Kagome pulled her arm roughly out of his grasp and turned to him with a look of fury. How dare he! She could have handled him perfectly fine on her own, he shouldn't have gotten involved. Now one of her friends would always carry the scars from this encounter and he wouldn't even know how he had gotten them. Instincts be damned, Youko was going to have to learn to control them where she was concerned. He couldn't keep doing this.

“What the hell do you think you were doing? Hojo had no idea who you were to me and was only trying to protect me.”

Kuronue looked at the two of them and shook his head. If they were going to fight over this then it needed to be taken inside. Personally he didn't see why she was so infuriated. Youko had been within his rights to kill the guy and hadn't because she had interfered. This situation with the boy should have been taken care of long before now and hadn't been.

“He had no right to touch you.”

“I could have handled him!”

From inside their head Kurama sighed. If only Youko hadn't given that final push he would have held him off. Now all they could do was damage control, and it looked like a lot of it was going to be needed. They didn't dare touch her right at the moment, she was literally glowing and they would be burned with any physical contact.

`You do realize you have gotten us into deep shit right Youko?'

`Maybe, but he needed to be taught a lesson.'

`You could have just beat him up you know.'

`Bruises fade and broken bones heal. What he has now will serve as a reminder not to touch what is mine.'

`You really are a cold hearted bastard you know that Youko?'

`I never claimed to be otherwise.'

`You'll be lucky if she forgives us for this.'

`Red you are forgetting that she really can't consider herself just a human any longer. She is mated to me, besides being a powerful Miko. She is going to have to learn to live by another set of rules just as you did. Human customs no longer have the hold they once did. She will forgive us eventually and learn to accept the way our nature demands we live. That includes no physical contact with a male who desires her.'

`Good luck getting her to agree with you Youko.'

Kagome was furious but she was rapidly losing any patience she had left with her silver haired mate. He was outright ignoring her in favor of speaking with Shuichi. She could see it in his eyes, the way they turned inward and blocked her out.

“Youko!”

He came back to the current situation with a start, looking at his mate once more. He couldn't help the thought that passed through his head about how beautiful she was when she was in a rage. Her eyes glowed an otherworldly blue. He wanted nothing more than to kiss her at that moment

`Hn. I wouldn't attempt it Fox, you'd be risking accidental purification. She's that angry with you.'

`You might be right Hiei.'

“Kagome you might well have been able to handle him but I am supposed to be the one to protect you and that includes keeping guys like Hojo away from you.”

“I am not a piece of property you know! Just because we are mated does not give you the right to maim my friends!”

Whatever Youko was going to say in reply to the girl was interrupted when their was a popping sound and Botan appeared out of nowhere. At that particular moment she looked as if she wished to be anywhere at all but there in the middle of the argument that was obviously going on but she had her orders. Hiei was the one who broke off from the argument to find out that she needed.

“Hn what is it woman?”

“Koenma wishes to speak to both you and Kurama.”

“About?”

Hiei had a pretty good idea what it was about. He knew quite well that it was extremely likely the Prince of the Spirit World had them under constant surveillance and had witnessed what had just happened. He knew if that was the case that indeed there would be hell to pay. Attacking a human was not something that was condoned by the Reikai. Only under the most extreme circumstances was it tolerated and somehow he doubted this would be considered a situation that warranted such an action.

“I think you know Hiei. Koenma is extremely displeased.”

Hiei simply nodded and walked back to the others. There was no telling what Koenma was going to do over this situation, but whatever was to happen wasn't likely to be good for either him or Kurama. Youko looked over at him curiously when he approached.

“Let's go Fox.”

“Another mission?”

Hiei gave him a look that clearly told him that he should know better than to ask that considering what had just happened. Youko merely nodded and gave control back over. It wasn't a good idea to further irritate the demigod by showing up in that form if this was indeed about the Hojo incident.

“Kuronue would you mind staying here with her?”

“Not at all Kurama. Good Luck.”

“Thanks.. I think we may need it. Kagome, we can finish this later.”

Kagome nodded and sighed resignedly. She couldn't really be mad at Kurama for something Youko did. Her power vanished along with her anger over the situation, it wouldn't do to brood over it at the moment. She'd worry about it later when he came back and Youko once again came out. When the glow that lit her skin disappeared Kurama pulled her into his arms and lowered his mouth to her ear. He whispered an `I'm sorry' and then brushed his lips softly against hers. She watched as he turned and followed Hiei and Botan through the portal to the spirit world. As angry as she was she hoped that they would be alright. None of them had any idea what their punishment would be.

Kuronue wondered exactly how much he should interfere in this. His friend was going to need a lot of help to get passed this new problem in his relationship with Kagome but he wasn't certain how welcome his help would be. Hell, he had never really wanted to get involved in the problems that came with relationships which was why he was content to stay single and indulge in the occasional fling when needed.

“Let's go inside Kagome, I have a feeling it is going to be a while before they return.”

“Somehow I think you are right.”

He laid a reassuring hand on her shoulder as they walked to the house. He knew how conflicted she likely was and it was something that would have to be worked out in order for her to move forward with Youko. Perhaps he could help her out there. It was worth a shot anyway. Youko was going to owe him for this one.

Mrs. Higurashi looked at her daughter and instantly knew that there was something wrong. Even Kuronue looked serious which from what she had seen was unusual. It looked as if there was a need for a family talk, even if her family had grown to immense proportions and now contained members that weren't human. With a sigh she started water boiling for tea. This hadn't been easy on any of them.

“Want to tell me what happened?”

“Hojo stopped by Mom.”

“Oh dear. What happened?”

“To make a long story short, Youko took offense to his presence and decided he needed to properly assert his dominance over him.”

Kuronue would have snickered if the conversation wasn't so serious. Youko's behavior being compared to that of a common dog would irritate the kitsune to no end. He'd have to remember to tease him about it later on once the situation had calmed down some.

“I'm afraid to ask but is Hojo alright?”

“I don't know Mom. Youko cut him up pretty badly in the face, I didn't get a chance to look at it closely before Hiei dragged him off the property. I mean that literally too. I'd be surprised if Hojo didn't lose most of his skin the way he was removed from the property.”

“I was afraid of something like this. That's why I had been trying to keep him from coming over. It's obvious Youko loves you and he isn't about to let anyone he doesn't approve of near you.”

Kagome's eyes darkened once more at the thought of how Youko reacted. She didn't appreciate being treated like property. Apparently her thoughts showed plainly on her face because her mother took her hand in her own. Strangely enough she was having an easier time dealing with this now than her daughter was.

“You knew this was going to happen Kagome. Whether it had been with Youko or with Inuyasha eventually you would have had to deal with the issue of Hojo.”

“Inuyasha wouldn't have hurt Hojo like that.”

“Wouldn't he have? You yourself told me you had to keep him from killing him when Hojo attempted to kiss you that one time. And he didn't have any real tie to you beyond affection. How much worse would it have been if he had lived and bonded himself to you?”

“Hojo didn't kiss me this time Mom. Youko was out of line.”

“Kagome, Hojo was attempting to drag you away from him. I'm surprised Youko didn't kill him, especially when we saw how he was hurting you whether it was intentional or not. The only reason he wasn't taken out by my blade or Hiei's was because neither of us are bonded to you. It is Youko's place as your mate to take care of any threats to you.”

“Kuronue, Hojo isn't a threat to me. An annoyance yes, but he wouldn't hurt me.”

Kuronue rolled his eyes at her and gently took her arm pushing up her sleeve to reveal the bruise that was there. Kagome looked down at it in surprise. She hadn't registered it when they had looked at her arm before since she was more concerned with Hojo's face. Her mothers face grew concerned when she saw the size and shape of the discoloration.

“If he wouldn't hurt you then this wouldn't have happened Kagome.”

“Maybe if Youko hadn't lost his temper and forced himself out then he wouldn't have frightened Hojo enough to drag me away. He went too far Kuronue.”

“Why do you insist on treating him as if he was human Kagome?”

The question startled her into silence. Kuronue looked at her with an intensity she wasn't used to seeing out of him. Was there a difference in how they should be treated? Had she somehow brought this on herself in the way she acted around Youko?

“I…. Have I been?”

“You have Kagome.. Granted it is a unique situation that the three of you are in, you must remember that even though Kurama is human Youko is still a major factor in how he acts. Youko lived for over a thousand years in his previous life and has retained all of his memories and mannerisms. You cannot treat him as if he were a human Kagome, there are several key differences between us.”

“But…”

“He's right Kagome, even I can see it. That's why I kept Hojo away the best I could when not only Inuyasha was around but now with Kurama as well.”

“Why couldn't things have been easier for me? Do I not deserve some sort of break here?”

Kuronue chuckled at the outburst from the girl who was now holding her head in her hands. A mating between a human and a demon was not at all common, and it was always a trial for the two to adjust to the situation. This time would be no different, maybe a bit more difficult considering she was a Miko. She would have to be the one to adjust more than Youko would. Instincts would not be denied, she would have to realize that.

“This is not funny you know.”

“Perhaps instead of yelling at him Kagome, he could be the one to help you out since he himself is not only a demon but he is also Youko's closest friend.”

“True, I could tell you what to expect with him. He can change to a point Kagome but don't expect miracles. It would go against his nature.”

“He can't go around maiming people just because they touch me.”

“Then you'll have to keep from allowing other males to touch you. Youko is an extremely possessive individual as you might have noticed.”

“I'm not a piece of property Kuronue.”

Her mother pushed her bangs off of her face and gave her a gentle smile. “No one is saying you are Kagome. Something you have to remember when dealing with males of any species is that if they have feelings for you they hold you close and protect you from anything they consider a threat, including other males. I imagine the only reason Hiei and Kuronue are allowed near you is because they were friends before you came into his life. He trusts them around you.”

Kuronue nodded, her mother had hit the nail on the head with that statement. There was no way Youko would have allowed them near her otherwise.

“I still can't forgive him for this. Hojo will carry scars for the rest of his life because of this.”

“Did you forgive Kouga when he punched a hole through Inuyasha's stomach? Did you forgive Inuyasha for the first time you met when he tried to kill you? Did you forgive Miroku when he first met the two of you and he tried to suck Inuyasha into his wind tunnel? Or any of the other numerous times you've told me about what happened in the past?”

Kagome cast a death glare to Kuronue. She had tried to shield her mother from the horrors she had gone through in the Feudal Era which meant her stories had been greatly screened. Her mother though didn't look too surprised by his words and was patiently waiting for her answer to his question.

“Those were different circumstances.”

“Kagome it doesn't matter and you know it. Koga injured Inuyasha because he refused to listen to reason. There were other times Inuyasha nearly killed the wolf because of his attraction to you. How is that any different from this aside from the fact that Youko wasn't going to kill the human, only issue a warning.”

She wanted to argue that Hojo was a friend but she already knew the answer to that. Koga was a friend as well and she had forgiven both him and Inuyasha when they had acted stupid before.

“You're right. God knows I don't like it but you are right.”

Author's Notes: Sorry for the delay in this chapter, I had to forcibly reign in my temper over something that had been said in response to the last one. I'm going to try and be polite as possible in what I say here. If any take offense to this, I am not going to apologize for it.

The last time I had checked I did not have any separate entities in my mind so kindly refrain from telling me that a particular chapter has nothing to do with the plot line and is only there for character bashing.

Hojo is a loose end in any story it is that I have. He always will be. No, I don't care for his character that much, but then there are plenty of other characters I don't care for either. I use them when they become useful to me and in this fic I used his appearance as an opening for going into more depth of Kagome exploring her relationship with Kurama. Like it or not Youko is more intense in this fic than in a lot of others and as such he is going to continue to act that way. I have no doubts in my mind that in his previous life he would not have thought twice about feeding Hojo to one of his plants. I'd count Hojo lucky that all he got off with was a couple of scars.

No, Kagome is not happy with his actions but to outright say that she would never forgive him? Highly doubtful. If other people can portray her as forgiving Sesshoumaru for the things that he has done to the point that she would have a relationship with him then she can certainly forgive Youko for what he did to Hojo. Now, with that being said the sparks are still going to fly between them when Youko makes another appearance around her but she's finally going to start understanding that she can't treat him like he is a perfectly normal human because he is not.

The only thing left to say is if I see another review referencing this issue again with the intent on flaming me because I had Youko maim him I will promptly remove it.

Now for the reviewer responses.

LadyoftheWest: I'm glad you are enjoying it so much.. Hopefully I will be picking up C.O.S. soon again, I really was hoping to have it finished by now but no such luck.

tessie_fanfic: Nope, I'm not sick I just had to calm down before I posted again. Few things irritate me but some other reviewers comments due to my last chapter just set me off. Quite badly in fact, rereading my author's notes. Unfortunately I cannot rewrite it to make it sound any nicer and still get my point across, I'm still that upset over it. *Sigh* Perhaps I should have waited another day or two.

Rabid: I'm sorry for worrying you. It's just been one of those days.. Or couple of days in fact. Now I'm tempted to go ahead and kill Hojo off just to make myself feel better. Maybe Naraku needs a boytoy. Yup, I've read Mind Links, it is quite good in fact. That would be a lovely scenario wouldn't it? Once you get over the initial embarrassment factor anyway. Your idea of Kuronue taking him out has merit although Naraku might enjoy him as well. Decissions Decissions. Kouga isn't as dense as Hojo, so I don't foresee any huge problems between them once he realizes he can never have her. He knows all about demon customs and such, I think he will respect them.

phoenixs_paiste: Perhaps, I'm still considering what I need to do with him. We will see what happens. The confrontation between Youko and Yusuke will be within the next four chapters most likely. Suspense makes everyone antsy, just like it should be mwahaha. Sesshoumaru will be coming in again, he's going to be a part of the final battle but for his own reasons, not because he wants to help Kagome out. I just have to figure out what those reasons are. I'd say something to do with Rin but that is so commonly used and I want to be different. Hmm must think on it a while.

Fogkit: I'm leaning that direction now myself.

bloodbunny: As requested, here's the next chapter.

inuyuyu_15: That seems to be the majorities vote lol

crazy-punk-gurl: What can I say, seems to be a trait of his. Makes one wonder if he was a descendant of Miroku's somehow. Perhaps before he died he found someone to bear his child and never told anyone lol Stale crackers as a weapon? O.o I'd ask but I'm not sure I wanna know how you would use them lol

Shabopo: I'll have to go and correct that soon then.

Autumn Norris: Nah, You aren't a bad person. *Hands you tissues*

KogasHentaiLuver: LOL don't worry about Kouga. He's not going to be dense and try and tear her from Youko. Expect some tense moments but I imagine that Kagome will be the one to handle him for the most part, and it's likely to be set in the future when they meet anyway. That way Kouga has had 500 years to get over her and move on with his life. I really don't care what happens to Hojo either to be honest. It was a good opening for what I wanted to do so I ran with it lol I'm going to push for under 50 chapters, and not hold my breath. I might pass out first. Kuronue's likely to stay single in this fic. It was his only request when he agreed to play in this one, he doesn't want to upset his mate. :-)

WhirleeQ: I've never considered that honestly. Maybe once I start watching YYH and get caught up on the other stories including the ones running around in my head. Don't worry about the plot bunny thing, I've gotten used to wearing them as accessories. I have a rather cute pink one on top of my head at the moment in fact. Yup, Kagome's just a tad bit mad. I still think Hojo would make a good boy toy for Naraku though. Hmm… We'll see.

Rose Fury: It's a possibility.

Kagome-reincarnation: My mate might take offense to torture. That's his job, he picked up his love of the bondage thing from Youko.

Feathergriffin: I'm treating it as such since Youko's coming out so often though Kurama is going to have a bit more of the spotlight in the future since Kagome is made at our lovable spirit fox. I am waiting anxiously for the next chapter you post, I will be a faithful reviewer!

inukuramaRmine: LOL Here you go, the next chapter will likely be out tonight. Sorry, I don't have YIM, I'm afraid the computer would die if I installed it.

Until next time, thanks for the reviews.
