Chapter 38
“Dammit where is he?”
Keiko had been calling Yusuke's cell phone for the past fifteen minutes and had yet to have him pick up. Why the hell did he have to be so damn stubborn about carrying his phone with him? She had bought him the damned thing for a reason and it wasn't so he could leave it at home. It was times like this she wanted to slap him silly.
Her gaze traveled to across the street where there was a huge scene going on. There must have been at least twenty police cars gathered in the parking lot and probably more stationed around the other side of the building. There were television crews set up and reporters trying to find out what was going on inside.
Keiko prayed that she was wrong about what she had heard when she was inside. Before she had been asked to evacuate along with the others. Yusuke needed to know about what was going on if he didn't already which she decided was quite likely since neither he nor the rest of the team had made an appearance.
The mysteriously dressed man at the center of all the controversy had repeatedly called his hostage a `human' when threatening to kill her in the most gruesome of ways. If that didn't scream `Hey I'm a Demon, Fear Me!' she didn't know what did. It was either that or the guy was insane and suffering delusions of grandeur. After seeing what she had seen since Yusuke had become a Spirit Detective she was betting on the demon theory. The look that had been in his eyes made her blood run cold. It didn't help that his hostage was one of her long time friends, dating back from when they were both in middle school. Yusuke was likely to be the only one who could save her and he still wasn't picking up!
“Answer the Damn Phone!”
She decided to switch tactics and call the other guys. Perhaps Yusuke was with them but quickly her options were exhausted as she only got answering machines. Kurama's was no surprise to her, she had heard that he had for all intents and purposes moved to a Shrine. Though for some reason Yusuke wouldn't tell her why he had moved to a shrine. He had only said Kurama was likely to be pissed off at him and he wasn't saying another word about him.
She wracked her brain trying to remember which one it was, there were so many of them. If she could remember it then maybe it wasn't far away and she could find him there. Keiko was smart and organized in everything she did, it didn't take long for the answer to come to her. Higurashi Shrine, she knew where that was. Taking one last look at the scene laid out before he she turned and ran down the sidewalk.
The scenery flashed by as she ran. It was almost two miles to the Shrine from where she had been and it was now she was praising every God she could think of that she had saw the benefits in joining a gym to stay in shape. Even with her working out though this run was taxing on her body. She had to get there fast so she pushed herself to her limits, hoping that at least Kurama would be there when she arrived. He would know what to do.
The burning pain in her side continued to flare but she ignored it the best she could. She knew that she was almost there, she could see it in the distance. If this run doesn't kill me, climbing all of those steps certainly will she thought as she sprinted the last distance.

“Of course I'm right Kagome, when have you known me to be wrong?”
That statement earned Kuronue a couple of raised eyebrows. They knew he had said it in an attempt to lighten the mood some and based on the look on Kagome's face it had worked. He could always be counted on to cheer her up under almost any circumstances.
“Kuronue, do you really want me to answer that question?”
Based on the gleam in Kagome's eyes he suddenly decided perhaps that wasn't the best thing to say. She had a photographic memory when she chose to, and more often than not she remembered every embarrassing detail of things that had happened to him since he had been revived.
“Now Kagome….. “
“Let's see, there was the time where you insisted-“
A knock on the door interrupted whatever it was that Kagome was going to say much to the relief of the bat demon sitting next to her. Her attention snapped towards the front door as did her mother's and Kuronue's. Mrs. Higurashi was the one to get up to answer it leaving the two alone in the living room. With Kurama and Hiei gone her movements had been severely restricted which wasn't as bad as it could be since it was Kuronue who was enforcing it. He was good company after all.
Mrs. Higurashi was not prepared for the sight that greeted her when she opened the door. A very out of breath Keiko stood on the steps looking like she was ready to collapse. She didn't even bother to ask what she wanted, instead taking the girl by the arm and leading her inside so she could compose herself before stating her business.
Seeing a stranger being led into the room Kuronue melted into the shadows, ready to take the girl out if she proved to be a danger to Kagome. She looked ordinary enough but he had learned long ago that looks were deceiving. Kagome looked on concerned, she had never seen this girl before and she looked extremely troubled.
Once inside Keiko looked around frantically for some sign, any sign that Kurama was there. She felt like crying when she didn't see him, how hard did it have to be to find him? Or any of them for that matter? Her friend was in the hands of a demon who had already stated he would kill her.
“Where's Shuichi?”
“Shuichi? He's not here at the moment.”
Keiko swore under her breath, her eyes filling with tears. Kagome looked on at her concerned. She briefly wondered if somehow one of his fangirls had managed to find out he was living here. She wasn't entirely certain what to make of the situation. It wasn't every day strange girls popped up asking for the human side to your mate. She didn't quite know what to think.
“Are you okay Miss?”
“No, I need to talk to Shuichi. Can you tell me when he'll be back? It's important.”
“I'm sorry, we don't know when he'll be back. He left a while ago with one of his friends. If you want you can wait her for him. I'm Kagome, his girlfriend.”
Keiko looked up at her startled. Kurama had taken a girlfriend? The last time any of them had gotten any information out of him about his social life or lack there of he had sworn off of becoming involved with anyone in the human realm since he wouldn't be able to explain Youko. Had something changed that she didn't know about? She would worry about it later she decided. This Kagome girl had mentioned he went out with a friend. Perhaps he was with Yusuke.
“I'm Keiko, I'm really sorry to barge into your home like this. You said he went out with a friend?”
Kagome nodded, unsure of how much detail to go into. Hiei certainly didn't present himself in front of most humans. He preferred to keep a low profile and this Keiko person wasn't likely to know him if she only knew Kurama as Shuichi. However there was no way to be certain of that since she could be concealing the fact that she knew that Youko existed. She hated being in the dark like this.
“Maybe I know who he went out with then. Was it Yusuke?”
“No, I'm sorry it wasn't.”
Kagome stored that piece of information away for later use. So she knew of Yusuke, someone who did know all about Kurama's life. Perhaps she knew more than she was letting on. It was possible that this might even be Yusuke's girlfriend. She vaguely remembered the name Keiko being mentioned a few times when they had talked but then there were plenty of people named Keiko. This could be a coincidence.
“Well, it's doubtful it was Kuwabara he went out with if Yusuke wasn't there. That leaves Hiei.”
“You know Hiei?”
Kuronue watched from the shadows enjoying how neither girl was really willing to give any information about what they knew. Kagome was getting better about that. When he had first met her she tended to be extremely outspoken. It hadn't taken long to drill it into her that she could often times learn more if she stayed silent, letting the other person get frustrated enough to spill what knowledge they had. This Keiko girl was clearly upset and it wouldn't take much to get her to give away more of what she knew with a couple of well placed pushes given her current state of mind.
Whatever she was going to say though never came because the front door opened revealing the two missing demons. Kurama and Hiei both were surprised to see that Keiko was sitting in the living room. Even more surprising was that once Keiko's eyes landed on Kurama she launched herself towards him ready to drag him outside so she could tell him what was going on.
Kurama caught the look that Kagome was giving him. It plainly stated `you have mere moments to explain exactly who she is and why she wants you before I lose my temper. Again.'
`Our fiery vixen is jealous!'
`You say that like it is a good thing Youko.'
`It is, it means that the attachment she has for us is growing stronger despite the fact that she is pissed off at us.'
`You mean `you' not `us' Youko.'
`Same difference Red. This is indeed a good thing!'
~Then you might want to explain yourself Kitsune. If looks could kill you'd be looking to find yourself a new body.~
Kagome certainly was not amused at the scene developing before her. Keiko had latched herself onto Kurama's arm and was attempting to drag him out the door. And so far he was not attempting to remove himself from her grasp.
“Keiko what is wrong? Is it Yusuke?”
“I have no idea where Yusuke is right now. Come on outside, I need to talk to you both, it's important.”
“Keiko we can stay in here and talk, Kagome already knows about the team and what I am.”
Kuronue stepped out of the shadows upon hearing that statement. If she already knew that Kurama was a demon there was absolutely no reason to conceal himself. However the movement drew Keiko's attention and she plastered herself to Kurama's side when she noticed there was a demon there that she hadn't even been aware of. The close contact of course did nothing to improve Kagome's mood though she didn't say anything.
Kuronue was sensitive enough to Kagome's energy that he noticed the building supply she was harnessing unintentionally. He placed a reassuring hand on her shoulder and shook his head when she looked up at him. He knew that Kurama loved her and would never take another girl in her place. Silly human insecurities. Although he really didn't blame her, if he didn't know the circumstances behind their relationship he might have questioned it himself based on how Keiko clung to him for protection.
Kurama gave him a hard look when he touched Kagome but only received one in return. Hiei knew what was going on, Youko's instincts were bleeding through though why he was getting jealous now of all times was beyond him.
~Fix this Fox, before it gets out of hand.~
Reviewer Responses:
crazy-punk-gurl: My apologies, I remembered you this time! Normally if I miss a review it's because I think I've already responded because I'm distracted. Thanks for the brownie, it was quite good. As for Hiei's powers, we shall soon find out if he can indeed do that. Starbucks sounds good right now.
Kagome-reincarnation: That might work… Though I must admit I've already gone through hell and back in the mental torture dept so if you're going to try it, make it good lol
nrok829: *Glomps you* Thank you, Thank you, Thank you! I'll let you know as soon as they arrive :-)
bloodbunny: LOL Have fun! :-D
Rose Fury: As requested Fury-chan! A new Chapter.
Shabopo: *Glomps you over and over* You gave me my 300th review! Many, many thanks! Your mental image has invaded my brain and along with the teenage girls I got the little old ladies beating him about the head with their oversized, over stuffed purses. My mom used to carry on of those. Twenty pounds of change in the bottom and everything under the sun that would carry you over in an emergency for a month. Naraku wouldn't stand a chance. If it makes you feel any better, picture Koenma in his teenage form. I should have specified that when I wrote that chapter, it was the only way I could write that scene lol
Lady_Banshee_999 : That does present a lovely mental image doesn't it? Perhaps I will use that scene in You will be mine once I resume work on it. Hojo must die in that fic, there is no way around it. Yep, a few years has passed though I don't think I ever specified how old she is in this fic. If I haven't, she's about 18 give or take a couple of months lol
tessie_fanfic: I'm with you there about un-updated fics. If I know there's writers block I can completely understand. It's the ones where you have no idea if they have been abandoned or not that makes me twitch. I just have to know what happened. If I don't then my imagination runs away from me and I start having evil plot bunnies invade my brain. I can't take on any more stories at this point no matter how many ideas come pouring out my ears.
Kogas Hentai Luver: You've discovered my plan! Now I must plot and see how I can make it surprising although I hope Keiko's appearance was a bit of a twist. I'm not exactly happy with how it turned out. I really don't know enough about her to know whether or not she would look to Kurama for protection from any strange demons popping up unexpectedly. But I needed enough of a push there to get Kagome a tad bit jealous. I eagerly await the fourth chapter to your story, that was baaaaad cliffy for Chapter 3 lol I'm finding some of the better stories for the guys are found in the yaoi world. Very hmmm tasty. :-D
Mija: Don't worry about it, I know all about real life issues. Review when you can if you feel like it :-) And I hope things get better for you. I've got three other fics out right now that are on hold until this one is finished and my writers block disappears *glares at said block and kicks it*
Kura-kun-lovr: I don't blame her, I'd be making myself scarce too lol I wonder how many holes we can put in Naraku and still keep him alive? Might be fun to find out. I agree with you about him being a coward which is why I created a new bad guy for Whispers. However my friend who was supposed to help me develop my character since he is evil minded as well is on vacation and I haven't heard from him in forever. JIM IF YOU ARE READING THIS GET YER HINEY IN GEAR AND REVIEW! *Snickers*
Diane: Yep, I gave up trying to make everyone happy. Perhaps I went a bit overboard in losing my temper but nothing to be done about it now. It's over and done with, and hopefully the story will continue to flow well.
inukuramaRmine: Wednesday isn't a likely date for it to end, more of wishful thinking than anything else. I can dream though. Kouga will show up shortly though I am not entirely certain how it is going to happen. The relationship for You Will Be Mine is set in stone. For the most part I deal in writing only triangles though C.O.S. is more of a square through most of the story. Now that is difficult to write, especially when it comes to the lemons. If you look at it from the human P.o.v then it may be a bit strange. From demonic perspective though it fits right in :-)
*Taps foot* I'm impatiently waiting for SOMEONE to get off the phone here who is engaged in a meaningless conversation that is boring me to tears so I can post this chapter. So far it's been half an hour of listening to nothing but uh huh, uh huh, snicker, snort, cough. ARGHHHHH!! Where is Hiei when I need him to light someone on fire?
Until next time, thanks to everyone who reviewed.
