Chapter 39

“Who is that and why is he here?”

Keiko's voice came out rather shakily as she looked at Kuronue who had to resist the urge to see how intimidated he could make the girl. Somehow he doubted anyone would see the humor in it at the moment and if she managed to get any closer to Kurama they'd merge and the poor guy would be stuck with three voices in his head including his own.

“That is Kuronue and he is here because he is a guest in my house.”

Kurama looked from one girl to the other wincing at the barely concealed hostility he could sense in Kagome's voice. It was obvious to her now that Keiko was Yusuke's girlfriend by the way the conversation was going but that didn't explain why she was hanging onto Kurama's side like she was glued there. Youko was positively ecstatic with the way Kagome was taking this entire situation. Not only had she become possessive of them, but if she was acting jealous then she couldn't very well continue to be mad at him for what he did earlier could she?

`You don't know that Youko, I still wouldn't get my hopes up that she will forgive you so easily.'

`Nonsense. Look at her, she's positively livid at how Keiko is holding onto our arm. She's barely holding onto her power as it is. Once we point out to her that she is acting just as territorial as we were she will realize it's a natural thing for us to fight for what is ours. Speaking of fighting, you might want to remove Keiko from our person before Kagome loses it.'

~You get excited over the most asinine of things you know that Fox?~

`Do I? Imagine that aggression being moved into the bedroom and then tell me I shouldn't be excited that she is possessive of us.'

Hiei thought about it for a moment and decided that any truthful response might trigger that jealousy again and it would be aimed at him. Of course the images that Youko was currently indulging in was not helping either him or Kurama. Tactfully he removed himself from the conversation and solve this little issue of finding out what was going on.

“Keiko why are you here?”

Kurama extricated himself from Keiko's grasp and moved to stand beside Kagome much to her relief. Now perhaps they could find out what the hell was going on. Hiei perched himself on the edge of the couch ignoring the pointed look Kagome's mother gave him. She'd been trying to break him of that habit, along with the window sill without much luck.

“Okay, I was at the mall today with a group of my friends when this creepy guy stopped us and was asking where he could find the Lord. Really strange I know but he got really pissy when he didn't get the answers he wanted. Long story short, he's holding one of my friends hostage and was threatening to kill her.”

“I'm sure everything will be okay Keiko, since you are here I am assuming the authorities were called?”

While Kurama could sympathize that Keiko would be worried about her friend he didn't see where there was much that they could do. Especially if the authorities were already involved it would be difficult if not impossible to get involved.

“Of course, they evacuated the building. I don't think this guy is human though. That's why I was looking for Yusuke and came here. He's not answering his phone.”

That got everyone's attention although since Keiko had never shown signs of being spiritually aware it was doubtful that she would be able to tell if it was a demon unless it was obvious to everyone that it was not human. In that case in all likelyhood Koenma would already know about it and have called them together.

“What makes you think that he isn't human?”

“Well, he kept referring to everyone as humans. And the only time I've heard that in normal conversation was from you and Hiei. He's really creepy guys, maybe you should check it out.”

Kurama and Hiei shared a look, thinking that Keiko was just under a lot of stress since it was her friend that had been taken hostage. But to be safe Hiei focused and scanned with his Jagan. He still didn't come up with any demonic energy. So if that's indeed what it was then they were masking it. Regardless, he wasn't about to rush out to rescue a human girl, just because of a creepy guy.

“How was he creepy? You've said that a couple times now.”

Kagome wasn't sure to make of what the girl was saying. She could sympathize with her, she'd be upset if it were her friend as well. Creepy covered a wide range of things but she wanted to make sure of what Keiko was talking about. Keiko latched onto Kagome's question like a lifeline. She had been around Hiei and Kurama long enough to know that they weren't inclined to get involved at this point. Perhaps Kagome could convince them.

“It was mainly his eyes, he looked at us like he would kill us all without a second thought. That and his clothes, at first I thought he was involved in some sort of reenactment or something. The woman he was with dressed normally but he looked like he came out of a history book.”

Kagome felt the blood draining from her face and Kurama grabbed hold of her incase she fainted, she looked that pale.

“He was wearing purple robes wasn't he? Outlined in black, looked like he stepped from the feudal era. Waist length black hair that he wears down, red eyes, a shade or two darker than Hiei's.”

“That's him! How did you know?”

“It's Naraku.”

Hiei was immedietly out the door and on his way to check the situation out. He knew the Fox was fully capable of alerting the rest of the team that they were needed and would meet him at the site. He'd be there in a matter of mere minutes. Hopefully the others wouldn't be too far behind.

Kurama pulled out his communicator and waited for Botan to pick up. Kagome had raced up to her room to change clothing. Kuronue looked from Kurama to where Kagome had disappeared to. If it was indeed Naraku he doubted she would be going anywhere at all and he was likely to be left behind to restrain her from following. If Hiei had not managed to do it the last time when they fought Sesshoumaru it was unlikely that he'd be able to prevent her from following this time.

“What's up Kurama?”

“I need Yusuke and Kuwabara to meet us at the mall now. Naraku is there and he's holding a hostage.”

Botan's face showed surprise and she turned to relay the message to Koenma. Their sensors hadn't picked up anything or they would have already been called to deal with it.

“I'm going to pick them up now, we'll see you there.”

Botan disappeared and the communicator went dark. He turned to Keiko and Kuronue, about to say goodbye and to keep Kagome from following when the girl in question came rushing down the stairs dressed in her traveling clothes. She also had her bow and a quiver full of arrows slung over her back. She took note of the look on Kurama's face and her mouth set in a line of grim determination.

“You aren't leaving me here.”

“Kagome I can't allow you to go. Not this time.”

“You can't stop me. You're forgetting, Naraku was my opponent long before he was yours.”

“Kagome be reasonable, we don't have time to argue about this. You can't walk through the city armed like that, especially with the police out in force like they are now. We are going to have a hard enough time getting close to Naraku as it is.”

“Dammit you aren't leaving me here Kurama!”

Kurama looked over to her mother who was likely to be the only one to convince her to stay behind. Her mother nodded and pulled her daughter aside to talk to her. She went rather unwillingly. Why couldn't he understand that she needed to be there. It wouldn't matter how much they dismembered him, unless she was there to purify him he was likely to just reform if he had the shards on him. She had explained this to him before, he shouldn't be forcing her to stay behind.

Kurama already knew that this wasn't going to be the final battle. The odds were stacked against them even being able to engage him considering the masses of people that were present. Their cover would be blown with any use of powers and there was a likelyhood that there would be people injured. The best he was hoping for was following the hanyou to his lair and engaging him there.

“I'll hold her here the best I can Kurama but you know how she is. If she wants to go she's going.”

“I know. If I thought it would do any good I'd say tie her up. But she'd purify any of my plants and I don't know how her mom would take to us restraining her in such a manner anyway. Not to mention Kagome's reaction when she got free.”

“I can help.”

Both of them turned to Keiko who they had forgotten was even there for the moment. She wanted more than anything to be there herself, waiting for her friend to come out but she also knew the importance of keeping Kagome safe. Kurama would be distracted unless he was sure that she was safe and though she didn't know what it was, there was some obvious history between Kagome and this Naraku character.

`Eh, I'm not sure how good of an idea that is Red. You saw how Kagome was looking at her earlier.'

`For once I agree with you Youko but if Keiko doesn't stay here you know she's going to show up at the mall as well. We don't need both of them showing up.'

`Looks like we don't have much of a choice then. So be it. If she ends up coming anyway then we are tying her up at the next available opportunity.'

“Thank you for the offer Keiko. She might fight you on it but if you can, please keep her here for me.”

“I'll do my best, now go before she comes back out.”

Kurama wished he could go and say goodbye to her but that would make things more difficult with him leaving. He'd be back soon anyway and now she'd have three people watching over her while they chased this bastard down. He slipped out the door and hurried to where he knew Hiei was waiting for him.

Kagome heard the front door shut and knew he had left her, without even saying goodbye. She couldn't help the glare she gave her mother, she couldn't believe he had left her behind. If they weren't going to allow her to help then what was the point of all the training she had been doing?

“Don't look at me like that young lady. I understand your upset but try to see if from his point of view. You're safe here for now, this certainly won't be the last time Naraku pops up so you'll get your chance when the odds are better that your powers will be put to good use. If you were to go now, they'd worry about you. And if anyone got hurt because of it, how would you feel?”

Kagome sighed, she hated it when her mother was so logical. Of course they would worry about her, but by the same token she was worried about Kurama as well. At least if she was there she would know what was going on.

“I just hope they stay safe.”

***************************************************************** *************************

Botan popped through a portal into Yusuke's living room. Somehow she was not surprised to see both him and Kuwabara there passed out. One in the recliner, one on the couch. It had obviously been a long night of video games, beer and pizza judging by the mess that was scattered about the living room. She wasn't looking forward to waking either of them up.

“Yusuke!”

She poked him a couple of times hoping it would be enough to rouse him from his sleep but luck was not with her on this day. All he did was roll over and continue his snoring, oblivious to the world around him.

*Yusuke wake up it's an emergency!”

She shook him hard, waiting for some reaction. What she got was a typical response from him though. He grumbled something under his breath that sounded suspiciously like `Leave me the hell alone wench.'

“Wench am I?”

Botan pulled her oar out of thin are and proceeded to smack him with it a couple of times. That did the trick she noted in satisfaction as Yusuke pulled himself up off the couch while rubbing his head.

“Dammit, what do you want”

“We need to wake Kuwabara, you have to meet Hiei and Kurama at the mall.”

“The mall? You woke me up to go shopping? No fucking way, I'm going back to sleep.”

Botan rolled her eyes at him, it would figure that he would think it was something of the sort. She knew if he managed to get back to sleep she would never be able to wake him up again and Naraku was just too dangerous of an opponent with half of the Shikon jewel to leave to Hiei and Kurama on their own.

“Yusuke this is serious. Naraku is holding a hostage at the mall!”

“Fuck, well why didn't you say so?”

Yusuke jumped up and grabbed the blanket that Kuwabara was wrapped up in. He yanked hard on it, sending his friend tumbling to the ground. He picked himself up off the floor, cursing under his breath when he saw who had woken him up.

“Urameshi what the hell was that for?”

“We've got a job to do. Naraku has been spotted. Let's go.”

Botan opened a portal for them and then followed the two of them through. She still wasn't sure how they were going to handle this situation. Koenma had given very strict orders regarding the use of their powers under these circumstances. The likelyhood that they would defeat him this time was practically nonexistent and she knew it. Hopefully none of them would do anything stupid and get themselves killed in the process.

Author's Notes: I was going to continue it and get into the fight in this chapter but alas I am just too blasted tired to continue right now. I'll get started on the next chapter in the morning, it should be posted sometime tomorrow afternoon.

Reviewer Responses:

crazy-punk-gurl: Kagome wasn't certain if that was the same Keiko or not since they hadn't met before. Now they should be able to get off to a good start despite their rocky introductions. Kagura is extremely unlikely to help Naraku out of this one. He got himself in it, he can get himself out.

Rabid: No, I hadn't seen that until you pointed it out lol It's not wrong to be laughing at all though I would much rather see how many holes I can have put in his body before he falls into demonic pieces and sends the cops running. That in itself could be amusing as well. I kinda liked their internal conversation as well. It was prompted by some daydreaming after reading some stories on AFF. Me and my Hentai mind ;-) Congrats on winning over the word limit, how shall I reward thee for the accomplishment? Hmm I'll think of something. Yup Kagome is jealous, sucks to be her doesn't it? Lol, though Youko is positively eating it up. Arrogant kitsune that he is. Yusuke drank himself silly and was pretending to be in the witness protection program. Makes you feel bad for him when Keiko gets a hold of him now doesn't it? mwahaha Oh, careful with the name calling I saw Hiei and Kuronue conversing over in the other room and I think it had to do with ways to get revenge on you. Scary stuff when they plot like that.

Shabopo: If you wish, an image search on Google should come up with teenage Koenma pictures. He's kinda cute that way, if you pull the pacifier out of his mouth. I have to wonder at the pacifier fetish he has, it looks extremely odd on the older version. You'd think he could channel his energy some other way but nooo,.. Silly demigod that he is. And yup, been in that situation before and I do my level best to avoid situations like that again. I won't even walk into a store unless it's absolutely necessary around Christmas time, I can't deal with the people. I'd end up strangling some baka that attempted to run me over with a shopping cart or something. Hehehe, now we have a ticked off Kagome stuck at home with one of the causes of her frustrations. This could be fun.

DeJaVooo: Yep, this will be a good starting point for the more serious feelings they have for each other.

bloodbunny: I dunno what you all think you're doing over there but one of ya just groped me by accident. Hey, kinda fun though I should quit writing for now and join in lol

inuyuyu_15: I am evil with how I worked this chapter but it is so much fun. How is this for prolonging the tension? Lol

Rose Fury : *glomps you back*

Kagome-reincarnation: Here you go.

KogasHentaiLuver: Hehehe I thought so as well. Now that she's established that she cares enough to be extremely jealous hopefully we can move forward towards the lemons in this sill fic lol Don't worry about the cliffy, sometimes it's just a perfect spot to end a chapter, even if everyone reading screams and pulls their hair out. I do it all the time in this fic, I'm surprised I haven't been slaughtered fifty different ways by now O.O More mall drama coming in the next chapter :-)

Autumn Norris: Your friend sounds as if he has a cast iron stomach. I cannot imagine how that would have tasted lol

Xoulblade: Thanks, he escaped from my Hentai closet earlier and wasn't there when I needed him. Now that I have captured him again he will have to pay for his transgression though I'm beginning to think he is escaping just so he can be caught and punished. He enjoys what happens just a bit too much lol

Ren: Hopefully that will be soon.

Jasmine Fields: Oh, it will be. I might be able to turn that confrontation into a bit of a lime. As long as everyone is in agreement that it wouldn't be moving too fast for them.

Arbor: Hehe yup. It's hard to keep him in trouble though, he's just too blasted lovable and cuddly and and and… *melts*

Until next time everyone, thanks to all who reviewed!
