Chapter 4: Koenma Gets a Clue

Koenma paced across his desk while he waited for Botan to bring in his Spirit Detectives. He glances at his monitor in hopes of seeing the energy spike again, but to no avail.

“What the hell do you want now?!” a male voice cut across the room. Koenma sighed. Botan must have pulled Yuske from another date with that girl, Keiko.

“Now, Yuske, this is important. You know Koenma wouldn't pull you in if it wasn't something important.” A ferry girl with blue hair shook her finger at the boy with slick black hair. The boy growled.

“Yeah? Well you tell that baby that for the other 3,987 times, this one better be good!” he snapped.

“I see you are here, Yuske.” Koenma found it best to speak before the boy decided to tear his office apart.

“Yeah, whatever toddler. Let's just get his over with.” The boy known now as Yuske said.

“Yuske, for the billionth time, I AM NOT A TODDLER!” Koenma stamped his foot.

“Koenma, sir, if you could just tell us what you need we will be on our way.” A young man with red hair and green eyes said calmly. Koenma looked over to Kurama with a small smile of thanks. If there was one person who could turn the tables in a conversation it was the kitsune avatar before him.

“Yes, well,” Koenma cleared his throat, “It seems that for the past couple years an unexplainable energy has been seen at a shrine. At first there was no reason for further investigation because it was a shrine. Over time, the energy has grown and there have been long periods of time when the energy completely disappears. We have news that the energy has been disappearing into some sort of portal located on the shrine's grounds. We believe that this girl is the cause of the energy.” Koenma turned on the screen where a young woman with blue eyes and black hair was seen. “Her name is Kagome Higurashi and if our sources are correct, she could be a miko. This is serious since…”

“What the hell is a miko?!” Yuske demanded, cutting off Koenma.

“Mikos were priestesses who used their energy to purify demons.” Surprisingly, a small man with jet black, gravity defying hair answered. His crimson eyes narrowed at Koenma who stood still on his desk. Koenma shivered under that glare but continued on anyway.

“Exactly, right you are Hiei. We haven't seen this large amount of power in 500 years. If this is the case, you will need to collect the Miko and bring her here.” Koenma said.

“Yeah yeah, toddler. We'll go get your Miko.” Yuske mumbled.

“Botan will make a portal to the shrine. Since the energy has disappeared as of this morning you need to search the grounds for the portal.” Koenma said. Botan opened the swirling portal. Yuske and a tall man with orange hair stepped through. “Kurama, Hiei, I need to speak with you for a moment.” Kurama nodded and signaled Yuske that they would join them momentarily.

“What would you like to speak to us about?” Kurama asked, his green eyes flashing to gold.

“It seems that over the past week, there has been a different energy at the shrine, a demonic energy to be exact.” Koenma said quietly. “We believe it followed the Miko through the portal. I want you to capture the demon. Do not kill it. I want it captured.”

“Why do you need the demon alive?” Kurama asked.

“Hn, it would be simple to just kill it.” Hiei snapped.

“If my guess is correct, this is an extinct demon. This kind of demon should not exist anymore. They were killed out many years ago because they were feared for the power they had.” Koenma said. He turned around and turned on the screen behind his desk. The screen should a young demon with black and red hair. Dark red stripes across his cheeks and a black and red tail thrown over his shoulder.

“Is that some type of dog demon?” Kurama asked.

“Sort of, a shadow fire hound to be exact.”

“What the hell?! There is no way this demon can be one of those!” Hiei stepped forward.

“Our sources show…”

“Damn your sources! I know there are none left. The last one died on my blade.” And with that, Hiei left the office. Koenma gave Kurama a look that said find out what the hell he's talking about.

“Bring me the demon, Kurama.” Koenma said. Kurama nodded his head and left after Hiei.

Kurama found Hiei in a tree near the shrine. He stopped underneath the tree and leaned against it closing his eyes.

“Do you think Koenma is telling the truth?” he asked. He got no relpy. “You must admit, Hiei, he told us more than he usually does.”

`I don't give a damn what the toddler wants. There are no more shadow fire hounds left.' Kurama sighed.

`What do you expect from him? We have to capture the demon one way or another. Perhaps he is wrong and perhaps not. The only way we are going to find out is if we find the demon.'

`Hn' Hiei leapt from the tree and continued towards the shrine. Kurama shook his head. There is something he is hiding.

`I could have told you that.' Kurama groaned. He was hoping Youko would be quiet through this mission. `I heard that.'

`I know you did. Since you are claiming to be so observant, what exactly is he hiding?' Kurama was met with nothing as he smiled and followed his partner to the shrine.
