Chapter 7: A Week At Home

Kagome entered the shrine with three boys tailing her. She watched as Raven went upstairs to change out of her clothes and probably take a shower. A bath sounded really inviting right now, but first she needed answers.

“So, what are you doing here, Yusuke? I know it's not to enjoy the scenery.” Kagome said. Yusuke looked at her in shock for a moment wondering when she had become so blunt.

“What Yusuke is failing to say is that we were sent here by our boss, Koenma to find you and the demoness, Raven was her name?” Kurama asked.

“Yes, that is Raven and you can tell Koenma to leave me alone. He is not getting the jewel so he can put it in one of his vaults to get stolen.” Kagome crossed her arms across her chest and glared at the three boys. Raven came back down stair toweling her long wet hair and in her illusion back on. She was getting the distinct impression that the ugly buffoon wanted to pet her. She eyed the boys before chunking her towel at Kagome.
“Hey!” said person cried as the wet towel hit her in the face.

“Go get in the bath, Kags. I know you want to. I will handle things from here.” The guys didn't miss the glint in her dark eyes and neither did Kagome who just winked at them and headed upstairs.

`Did she just wink at us?' Youko demanded as he watched the miko go upstairs and the demoness head into the kitchen to start some tea.

`I believe she just did. I am suddenly thinking we would have had better chances with Kagome then the demoness, Raven.'

`I wonder if she knows her hair is making her white shirt see through.' Kurama could almost see the kitsune within him tilting his head trying to get a better look at the dark haired demoness. Raven's hand came up behind her, proudly displaying the finger to the kitsune avatar.

`Obviously she does, Youko.' Kurama said dryly.

`Oh, I like her! She's feisty! And so is the miko! Which one?! What about both!' Youko's tail wagged like a puppy with a new toy.

`Youko! We are here investigating and bring in Raven to Koenma, not get ourselves purified!' Kurama cut off the kitsune but not before he heard some choice words. He was still curious as to how Hiei was familiar with Raven.

“As interesting as it is to watch you have conversations with your other half which probably involve both my sister and I in some interesting positions, get your head out of the gutter and have some tea before I pour if over your head.” Raven glared at the red head. Kurama was a little taken back but gave a charming smile and accepted a cup of tea. Raven snorted at him and mumbled about certain kitsunes who were full of their selves. He could feel Youko bristling at the comment, demanding to know how many kitsunes she knew and if she wanted to try some of those interesting positions as she put it.

“I don't believe I have ever seen anyone bring down Youko's ego and snort at Kurama's smile.” Yusuke smirked behind his tea cup as said red head's glare was pointed on him.

“You try dealing with a hentai monk, a damnable hanyou, and a Taiyouki who has an ego the size of Japan. You would be surprise.” Raven mumbled as she plopped in a chair, her denim shorts ridding up a bit revealing some nasty scars on her thighs and her sleeveless white top showing off an impressive tattoo and some more scars. Where in the world did she get so many scars? Yusuke wondered a bit as Kagome came skipping down the stairs, her wet black hair in a braid with a pair of shorts and a green top on. She gave a small smile to all those present and plopped on Raven who let out a groan.

“Are you okay?” Kagome asked, eyeing her adopted sister wearily.

“I would be if you got off me!” Raven panted. Kagome obliged but both knew that's not what she meant. “You missed the fun; I was making the kitsune over there squirm. Of course it didn't take too much since his other half was having a field day with us as it was.”

“Really?” Kagome glanced at Kurama and raked him over with her eyes. He was suddenly under the impression that these two together were a very formidable pair and could bring down any male they set their sights on. Wanting to disappear from their penetrating gazes, Kurama looked over to Yusuke as if pleading for help. Yusuke seemed to find his predicament amusing but took pity.

“So, Kagome, what's with popping out of wells, the impressive light show, and Raven?” Yusuke asked. Kagome raised an eyebrow at him.

“What's with the kitsune avatar, the buffoon with high spiritual awareness, and a damned fire apparition?” she asked. Damn she's good, Kurama admitted. And what does she have against Hiei? At this point Raven decided it would be in her own best interest if she went to Makai. She slipped upstairs, unnoticed by the room's occupants and changed into clothes more fitting of a demoness. She put on her brown training pants and tucked them in her dark brown boots. Pulling on a matching brown coat she put her hair in a braid and shifted into her demon form. Sighing to herself she strapped one of her blades to her hip and opened a portal to Makai.

Raven stepped out of the portal and let out her senses. Oddly enough there were no other demons around. Promising to think on it later, she made her way to the crafter she had hired to do Kagome's outfit. Unknown to her, a certain fire apparition had escaped to a tree near the portal she had open. He watched her look around and was thankful that old habits of masking himself died hard or else she would have sensed him. When she made her way through the forest he decided to follow, it was time to see if she was who she claimed to be.

Hiei watched from a hidden place as the demoness picked up a package from an older demon. The demon opened the parcel and revealed a fighting outfit similar to what the tajiya wore back in the Warring States. The outfit was mostly black and blue with hints of silver. It was well made and she seemed please with it. She thanked the demon and placed a small bag on the table. The demon said nothing put pulled the small bag towards himself. The demoness produced a small backpack from nowhere and placed the parcel inside. Soon she set off in a different direction.

Raven felt as if she was being followed but every time she tried to sense out her stalker she found nothing. Becoming extremely frustrated, she decided it would do good to make use of her gift from Midriko. She pulled off her coat and glanced at her tattoo on her arm. The tattoo glowed briefly and then a small kitten sat on Raven's shoulder. She let out a sigh and picked up the kitten and held it close.

“I need to get somewhere fast, old friend. Are you up for a run, Ryo?” the black kitten with gold eyes let out a meow and jumped from her arms. In a swirl of mist stood a much larger version of the kitten and Raven mounted the giant feline as Sango did with Kirara. “Well, what are we waiting for? Let's see if this sword smith is as good as he claimed.” Ryo let out a roar and took to running through the trees.

Kagome sat before the three boys at a loss for words. True to her word she told her story and in return Yusuke had told his story. She had always wondered why there were no demons in her time. She just thought they had eventually died out, but in fact they were kept in their own little world.

“So, this Koenma wants to meet me?” Kagome asked. The guy now known as Kurama or Youko Kurama or Shuichi, she was still trying to figure that one out nodded at her. “Okay, I guess I have nothing better to do, but only if Raven comes with me. I don't feel right going anywhere without her.”

“Raven is more than welcome to come.” Kurama smiled at the young miko before something dawned on him.

“Where the hell did she go?!” Yusuke eloquently put it. Kagome closed her eyes a moment before she began to panic, a little.

“She's not in the house, I can't sense her anywhere nearby.” Kagome stood up and went upstairs. She rushed into the spare bedroom used by Raven and noticed she had changed her clothes. Her energy still lingering meaning where ever she went, she went in her demon form. “Perhaps she went to that demon world place. She said she had some errands to run before we left.”

“Should we wait for her?” Kuwabara asked.

“Could we?” Kagome's blue eyes looked up at Kurama.

`Damn, how does she do that?'

`I don't know, Youko, but I am finding it hard to deny her anything.' “Of course, if you like, we will wait here with you for her to return.” Kurama smiled. Kagome gave him one of her own brilliant smiles and he found his heart beat picking up. Youko bouncing around in the back of his mind wasn't helping much either. Suddenly, he was glad Hiei had decided to leave or else he would never hear the end of this.

When Raven had removed her jacket, Hiei got a good look at the numerous scars that adorned her arms and her back. Scars that looked suspiciously like claw marks. Not that the silver scar inflicted by him upon her was proof enough that this was indeed the same Raven he grew up with. He still had his doubts since he watched her take her final breath. Dammit, Raven. What happened? He thought as he ran to catch up with the quick footed feline.

“Totosai!” Raven called out once she reached a clearing. An old demon grumbled from within a cave like structure.

“Raven! You are late.” He grumbled as he came out. Raven rolled her eyes as she gave a pat to her feline friend. Ryo shrunk back down to her smaller size and leapt onto Raven's shoulder.

“Does it matter? Do you have the blade done?” She asked, excited.

“I must say, this is one of my proudest achievements, making a blade that can handle miko ki. Almost as great as the two blades I forged from you.” He looked at her pointedly and Raven shrugged making her blades shift into his view.

“And I love my blades more than anything. Blades that can handle both miko and demonic ki are impressive.”

“Yes, they are. Now, let me get Lady Kagome's new blade for you. How is she by the way?” he went back into the cave and emerged with a long box. Raven shrugged.

“Her training is almost complete. I left her with Koenma's puppies so hopefully she can keep them running around the bush until I get back.”

“And you?” Totosai said sadly. Raven looked down.

“I don't know. Midriko saved me from death in order to train Kagome. It's been several hundred years though since it happened. I don't know if I will die or if I will be given a second chance.”

“You are an honorable person, Raven. You have taught Kagome well, I have heard rumors of her increased strength.” He handed the box to Raven who place it in her black bag. “Where did you learn your wondrous talents?” Raven looked sheepish.

“An old friend, I owe him so much as it is. I don't know how I could ever pay him back, or if I will even be given the chance.” Raven smiled sadly at the sword smith.

“Then I hope Midriko wants to keep you around. I am sure Lady Kagome has become very attached to you. We all do. You two are more alike than you may think.”

“I will be sure to tell her that.” Raven said laughing. She turned to leave. “I thank you for everything, Totosai.” She threw back a bag and he caught it. “Your payment and thanks.” She disappeared into the surrounding woods.

“You are more than welcome, Lady Raven. May the Kami give you what you desire most, a life.” With a small sigh he turned back into his home.

Hiei watch the older demon retreat into his home and looked towards the direction Raven had disappeared. So, the legendary miko Midriko brought her back to train that miko Koenma wants. He took off after Raven, now he was sure who she was, now he only to bring himself to confront her. He wasn't the same as he was all those years ago; after Raven died he had gone on a murderous rampage. He used his bandit skills to survive and eventually to take over all the worlds until he got caught. Raven was the last of her kind and he be damned if he let Koenma use her for his own purposes.

“Where the hell did she go?” he mumbled as he stood in a clearing. The sound of footsteps approached him and he leapt into a tree. Raven came in to the clearing with the feline Ryo upon her shoulder. Her low cut white shirt showed off her silver scar. Smirking at his chance to catch her off guard, he leapt down before her.

Raven gave a small `eep' and stumbled back a bit before she pulled back her fist and let in fly. He caught her fist and narrowed his eyes at her.

“You are the one following me!” she snapped at him.

“I seem to remember you being more aware of your surroundings.” Hiei mocked her. She huffed and tried to pull her hand from him, he let her go.

“You don't know me.” She snarled. He raised an eyebrow at her.

“I don't?” he asked slowly. Raven took another step back before she dropped her eyes to the ground.

“I know you're mad at me, Hiei and for that I am sorry.” She whispered.

“You have no idea.” He grumbled. “You are supposed to be dead.” She touched her scar a moment before she looked up at him with shadowed eyes.

“What makes you think that I am not?” she asked. Finally giving into the frustration threatening to consume him he grabbed her by the shoulders and brought her closer to him, never breaking eye contact. Ryo, knowing this demon posed no threat leaped from her shoulder before he could get crushed and curled himself around her ankles.

“Stop playing games, Raven. How are you here?!” he demanded, giving her a little shake.

“Would you rather I be dead?” she glared at him. His hands tightened on her shoulders before they slid down her arms to grip her there. He narrowed his eyes at her before he answered.

“What makes you think I want you dead?”

“Sorry.” She mumbled.

“You seem to be saying that a lot.” He smirked. She glared at him before she sighed.

“You did kill me Hiei or not. I am not so sure now. Some point when you…you know, Midriko grabbed me. She gave me a proposition to train Kagome. I took it; I just didn't think it would throw me hundred of years into the future. I don't know what will happen. Am I suppose to die or can I continue to live?” she pleaded more with herself then anyone else. Hiei thought about what she said for a moment. He wasn't about to let her go, not after he found her again. Of course, knowing the Grim Reaper helped in this case.
She shifted in his grip and it brought him out of his thoughts. He looked down on top of her head. He almost forgot how much smaller she was than him. Of course he was small in his own right, perhaps a 5'5”. Raven only came to a 5'0” even.

“So, tell me…kitten,” he smirked at her nickname from years gone, “What have you been up to?” Raven glared at him the moment he said her dreaded nickname he gave her long ago. Dammit, she was a dog demon, not some cat!

“Obviously not as much as you, Spikey.” She snickered when he growled. “I have heard some interesting stories,” she became serious. He frowned at her.

“You do what you have to do to survive, don't you remember?” he said.

“I do. More than I wished to. Hell, Hiei, you know better then anyone that I can survive.” She spoke softly. He knew. They were more alike then anyone could ever guess. Both not wanted at birth, both hunted, and both of them forbidden each in their own way. “I need to get back to Kags.”

“Hn.” He let her go, although somewhat reluctantly before he shook himself. Raven was tearing down the walls he had formed around himself all those years after her death. It wouldn't do for the others to see him that way.

“Coming?” she called over her shoulder as she picked up the cat. He allowed a small smile to escape. His old friend was back…and his first friend. His head suddenly snapped to the side as he heard something in the bushes. Raven heard it to and went over to investigate. He made a move to stop her but she avoided him, she was still as slippery as an eel. She pulled back the bushes and gasped. A small black neko with silvery blue markings was caught in the bushes. Raven gave a small thanks to Midriko, it was exactly what she was hoping to find for Kags. She reached in pulled out the small youkai. “Aren't you cute?” she said to the neko. Hiei snorted at her but she only raised an eyebrow at him.

“I thought you were a hound youkai, not some cat.” He smirked.

“You're just jealous cause I didn't say you were cute.” She sniffed before she headed off to the border. Hiei stared at her back a moment in shock before he came back to himself. He smirked again and took off after her.

Kagome was getting a little worried. She had no idea where Raven went to and she had been gone for a while now. Suddenly she felt it, the unmistakable presence of Raven and that damn fire apparition. She growled to herself, startling the boys around her before she took off outside. By the time she got outside, Raven was at the top of the shrine steps with the fire apparition no where in sight. Kagome narrowed her eyes at the tree she knew he was in. She could feel him glare right back at her. What was with youkai and trees?

“They're still here?” Raven's gaze was upon the detectives. Kagome sighed.

“Yes, they want us to go see their boss, Koenma.” She answered. Raven snorted.

“I am not going anywhere.” She growled. Yusuke looked at Kurama as if asking whether or not to drag her in.

“I am afraid you don't have much of a choice.” Kurama said. Raven narrowed her eyes with a glare that looked very familiar.

“Oh, really foxy? I don't see how you can bring little ole me in.” she snarled. Kurama sighed; this was going to be hard. He looked to Kagome, as if asking her help but she shook her head at him. She wasn't going to force Raven to do anything she didn't want to and when Raven didn't want to do something she had good reason.

`Hiei, some help here.' Kurama sent out to the fire apparition.

`Hn, why should I help you, fox?'

`Because this was our assignment from Koenma, he wanted us to bring her in!' Why was he being difficult about this? Any other time he wouldn't have to be asked to drag someone in against their will. There was no doubt in his mind that there was something he was missing.

`Watch and learn, fox' with that Hiei leapt from the tree and landed in front of Raven. He stood in front of her for a moment and she glared at him which he glared right back.

“No.” she said. He growled. She huffed before she got a dangerous gleam in her eyes. Kagome recognized it instantly and knew that Hiei had it coming for him. Kurama noticed Kagome start smiling and caught the gleam in the demoness' eye. She suddenly started to pout.

`What I wouldn't do to that lip' Youko purred in the back of his mind. Kurama rolled his eyes.

“Don't even think about it.” Hiei growled out.

“Think about what…Spikey?” she snickered. His growls became more vicious. Yusuke burst into a fit of laughter followed by Kuwabara. Kurama choked on his laugh, not really wanting Hiei to kill him and Kagome giggled beside him.
Hiei drew his katana from his side and Raven followed suit. Raven slid back into a stance as Hiei also shifted back some. Kagome groaned.

“Something wrong?” Kurama leaned towards her and whispered.

“Raven isn't recovered from her last battle with Lord Sesshomaru. I don't know if she can handle this.” Kagome whispered back. They had really gone at it the last time. Raven opted for calling Inu Yasha puppy and since Sesshomaru demanded respect from her…she called him Lord Fluffy. That did not go over to well at all. Thank goodness they were no where near a village or people would have to flee the area. She had to put up a barrier around everyone with all the youkai ki that was flying around. Sesshomaru really pulled a number on Raven. She was pretty torn up after that fight, but Sesshomaru didn't quite walk off with a smirk on his face either. Hiei's voice suddenly brought her out of the memory of that fight.

“Come out and play, kitten.” He smirked at her while those who knew them found their jaws hanging open. Raven growled viciously.

“I am a damn fire shadow hound!” she snarled as she charged at him, bringing her blade down in a graceful arch. Hiei dodged her blades easily and noted that she was not in her top form. He narrowed his eyes and brought his speed down just a notch, no need to beat her senseless when she was weakened. He preferred to do that when she was in top form.

Kurama finally found it in himself to close his mouth once the two started to more or less spar. Did he just call her kitten? He thought as his other half watched with battle trained eyes.

`He's taking it easy on her, Red.' Youko commented from the recesses of his mind.

`What makes you think that?' Kurama asked.

`Look at her. She's been in a major battle recently. Her moves are already sluggish and Hiei isn't even trying to draw blood, just disarm her.' Kurama watched a moment and then agreed with Youko. Hiei was defiantly holding back on the demoness. But the question was why. He snuck a glance of the stunning miko next to him. Her startling blue eyes were trained upon the fight before her. The only sign on her distress was her wringing her hands. He almost flinched with the strength she enforced upon her delicate hands. Hands that can kill, he thought absently. She was being trained, the girl…no woman known as Kagome knew how to handle herself in a fight.

The clang of metal brought Kurama's attention away from the sight next to him to the one before him. Hiei had finally disarmed the demoness who had collapsed on the ground in exhaustion. Her long dark hair veiled her face as she breathed heavily. He could hear Yusuke in the back talking to Botan to open a portal to Koenma. It wasn't long before Botan appeared above them on her oar. He noticed Kagome frown.

“Who knew Lady Death to be cheerful and riding an oar?” she muttered under her breath and Kurama had to keep back a chuckle.

“Are you guys ready? Oh!” she noticed Kagome and Raven collapsed before Hiei. “Hi! My name's Botan! Spirit Guide to the souls on the River Styx!”

“I'm Kagome.” She smiled at her and Kurama felt slightly jealous, “And my friend over there is Raven.” Botan glanced at the demoness before Hiei and noticed the concerned look on the apparition's face. Her own face took on a catty one as certain thoughts entire her mind. She also didn't miss the appraising look bestowed upon Kagome by Kurama. Well, it seems like the two demon members of the team have found some interesting females! Oh, I can't wait! She opened the swirling portal and Yusuke was first to go through. Kuwabara followed. Kagome eyed the portal warily before Kurama took her hand and led her through. Botan didn't let the faint blush on Kagome's face escape her notice. She turned to Hiei and was shocked to see him scoop up the other female in his arms and carry her through! Botan shook herself out of her shock and went into the portal behind him
