Chapter 13: A Little Competition

“Who's Kouga?” Hiei loomed over Raven as she leaned back against a tree. She looked up at him through her hair before grinning.

 

“Are we scared of a little competition?” Raven asked. Hiei raised an eyebrow.

 

“Competition? What in the hell are you talking about, onna?” he demanded. Raven shrugged before continuing.

 

“Kouga is a wolf youkai prince. He fancies himself in love with Kagome and he's is waiting for the moment Naraku is gone to make her his mate.” Hiei stiffened and Raven looked at him. “Noticed I said…make and not claim. He has already announced to everyone who would listen that he has already claimed her.”

 

“She doesn't bear a mark.” Hiei mumbled. Raven laughed.

 

“So, you are afraid of a little competition.” She stood up and looked at her best friend. “You know, she only sees him as a friend and he is more hard headed than Inu Yasha. The only one you have to look out for is Inu Yasha. So…if you want yourself a miko…you better get to it.” She gave him a little wink before walking off to pester Miroku. Hiei watched her walk off for a moment before occupying himself in the tree Raven onced leaned against. He leaned back and closed his eyes while he contemplated the miko named Kagome.

 

Did he have feelings for the little miko? Was he even capable of having feelings? He snorted. The moment I am around her it's like I can feel things I could have never imagined. Feelings are dangerous and having a miko around is dangerous. Then again, he always liked the danger in the situations he placed himself in. He opened his eyes and watched the group outside, or more precisely, a miko who was entertaining the kit. She would make an excellent mother. He mentally slapped himself. I am not keeping her! Grumbling, he watched her a while longer. If one was watching him they could see the way his eyes slightly softened. Could she ever accept me like she has everyone else? Perhaps he should have been asking himself how he was going to court Kagome because the rest of him had already decided upon it without his consent.

 

Raven plopped herself down next to Kagome as she watched Shippo color. She smiled. Put Kagome in the middle of children and she is happy. Raven watched Shippo and Kagome a while longer before letting her eyes wonder around the rest of the group. Yusuke was watching Sango practice her katana while Kuwabara was playing with the nekos. Miroku was meditating but she could see his eyes barely open watching Sango. Inu Yasha was in a tree himself and by judging his flicking ears, trying to think. She watched those ears a little while longer before letting her eyes find the fox. She scowled. Kurama was deep in conversation with his other half and it seemed they were arguing who would be dominating their body since Youko could easily come out.

 

“Damn fox.” Raven grumbled and Kagome looked up at her.

 

“Well, which do you prefer, dog or fox?” Kagome placed her hands on her hips as Raven sputtered.

 

“What the hell is that suppose to mean?” Raven screeched. Everyone stopped what they were doing and looked at the two females.

 

“It's a simple question, Raye, dog or fox?” Kagome asked again.

 

“This is so wrong.” Raven whispered. Kagome arched an eyebrow at her. “Neither!”

 

“Really?” Kagome seemed taken aback. She was just playing. Raven nodded.

 

“I know exactly who you are referring to with the dog comment and no, Kagome. No way in hell.”

 

“Oh, come on.” Kagome whined. “He is so into you. He has never come around this much and that was even when he was after tetsusagia.”

 

“He was after tetsusaiga?” Raven asked. Kagome nodded and Raven grinned. “Oh… I cannot wait to use that one on him…Lord Fluffy after something his brother has.” She laughed.

 

“Who the hell is Lord Fluffy?! I have heard that I don't know how many times, who the hell is the guy!” Yusuke demanded.

 

“Its Inu Yasha's older brother.” Miroku answered as he uncurled from his position, the rings on his staff jingling.

 

“Half brother.” Inu Yasha's shout came from a tree.

 

“Better half.” Raven said and watched in amusement as Inu Yasha fell from his branch.

 

“What did you say, bitch!” he demanded as he stormed up to her. She looked at him for a moment.

 

“You have got to be kidding me. I know you heard me with those ears.” She reached up and tweaked one as he jumped back. She sighed in longing as he stomped off. “Those ears will be mine…”

 

“Poor Raven.” Kagome laughed. “Kurama has ears too.” Raven snorted.

 

“And wandering hands.” She snapped. Kurama waved his hands in front of him.

 

“Youko…Youko has the ears and the wandering hands.” Kurama defended himself.

 

“Who was getting cozy on her chest, fox?” Hiei joined the fray. Kurama stuttered.

 

“Come again?” Miroku said with a grin on his face. “Lady Raven has a very some very nice…assets…” he grinned as Sango knocked him a good one.

 

`Very nice…wait a minute! Who is he looking at our chosen one's assets?!'

 

`Shut up, Youko.' Kurama groaned.

 

`When have you become so mean to me? This is another reason to let me take over…you need a time out.' Kurama sputtered. Kagome looked over to him.

 

“You should let Youko out, Kurama. He does have the right to be out every now and then. At least here he can't get into any trouble.” Kagome said as her eyes traveled over to Raven who was yelling with an Inu Yasha. Kurama's eyes also landed on the demoness…Youko's to her assets.

 

`Come on, Red. I want to be near her.' Kurama sighed.

 

“I know I am going to regret this.” He mumbled as he was engulfed in white mist. Everyone suddenly turned to him and watched in fascination at his transformation. Youko purred at the attention as he watched his favorite demoness stiffen. She turned to look at him and the grinned wickedly. That caught him off guard.

 

“Sit!” she yelled and he face planted. She jumped in the air. “Yes! It works on both of them!” Youko got up grumbling. He forgot about those damn rosary beads on him. He gave them a tug and watched as they stayed in place. He huffed. Well, that makes everything no fun. Hiei looked at his partner a moment and wondered if the fox had a death wish.

 

“I want a bath.” Kagome said and the rest of females jumped up.

 

“Bah…I just want away from all these hentai males.” Raven grumbled. She looked at two specific hentais. “Youko…stay away unless you want to be `sat' to hell.”

 

“We could get some subjugation beads for you, houshi.” Sango said as she eyed the monk. He put on his best innocent face.

 

“My Lady Sango, I am saddened to know you think so lowly of me.” He said. The girls gave him a speculative look before turning to other males to get their points across. Once they made sure that the unspoken threat was understood, they grabbed their things and headed to the nearest hot springs with three nekos and a reluctant kistune kit.

 

“Lucky kit.” Youko mumbled as he watched the females walk off. Hiei snorted. “Like you aren't curious?” Hiei rolled his eyes.

 

“It's not worth the pain, fox.” He said as he found himself a tree, not that he didn't have an idea what the miko had beneath her clothes. Her body was pressed up against his for one very nice night.

The girls were enjoying the hot springs while the males grumbled about women and hygiene. Kagome tried not to stare but it was always so hard not to marvel at Raven's scars. She had years to accustom herself to the ones Sango had on her back. But Raven's littered her upper arms, thighs, and the one silver scar where her heart was. Raven twisted her long locks upon her head and growled in dismay as several escaped.

 

“Did you know that it is possible to make Hiei's hair go down?” Raven suddenly said.

 

“That's random, but interesting.” Kagome said. Raven shrugged.

 

“Just thinking about how annoying my hair is and it reminded me of the time I doused Hiei in water.” Raven finished scrubbing and settled back to watch Shippo play in the water.

 

“And his hair went down?” Sango asked as she too settled back. Raven nodded.

 

“I bet it was funny.” Kagome giggled and Raven stifled a laugh.

 

“He's still sore about that incident. Its not my fault the water was cold…he's a fire apparition, he can warm himself up.” The moment Raven said this, an ugly green toad brandishing a two headed staff burst into the clearing. The three women squealed. Sango and Kagome ducked under water while Raven grabbed her shirt and a baggy pair of black hakamas before reaching for her sword. It the span it took for the little youkai to notice that it had stumbled upon a couple of bathing humans he was dangling in the hair.

 

“Put me down, you wench!” he squawked. Raven snorted as her blade pressed against his throat.

 

“Don't you know it's not nice to sneak up on ladies while they are bathing?” Raven asked.

 

“Like I would look at you ugly humans!” he snapped. Raven's eyebrow twitched before she dropped kicked the ugly thing into a tree.

 

“Master Jaken!” a small girl's voice yelled. Raven stiffened as she smelt blood. She glanced to the toad to see he was out cold. Grumbling about her bath being interrupted she quickly dropped her human disguise and followed the scent of blood.

 

“Raven, wait!” Kagome shouted but the demoness was gone.

 

“Don't leave the toad!” Sango called out. Both girls looked crestfallen as they glanced at the unconscious toad.

 

“I am not chancing that he will get up.” Kagome shook her head. Sango nodded.

 

“Ladies? Are you okay? We heard screaming.” Miroku's voice came.

 

“Don't send the letch!” The girls squealed. Kuwabara entered the clearing with his eyes closed and in hand what appeared to be a ki sword.

 

“What's wrong?” he asked.

 

“Take three steps to your left and then turn around.” Kagome said. Kuwabara did as she asked and stopped before Jaken. “Now open your eyes and make sure he doesn't get up until we are dressed. Then we are following Raven.”

Raven ran through the trees as fast as she could with no shoes. Her feet were tough as a demoness and she didn't have to worry about her clothes getting snagged on anything since they were clinging to her body. It's not like I had time to grab a towel and dry off. I should just swear off everything male. But now wasn't the time to be contemplating men. She could smell the blood getting closer and she could feel her beast stir. The blood of innocent children always did that to her and she knew she had to be careful with this one.

 

When she broke into a clearing she was meant with a grisly sight. A dragon youkai was done towards the edge of the clearing. She quickly glanced around and caught sight of four boar demons that were in the process of unclothing a small girl. Raven's blood began to boil.

 

“Release the child.” She hissed. The youkai glanced towards the voice and saw the demoness. Taking once last glance at the girl they decided that the demoness looked much more delectable. The little girl was dropped to the ground. She gave a little cry and Raven breathed a sigh of relief. At least she was alive.

 

“Hello, pretty.” One of the boars said. Raven sneered.

 

“You disgust me. Trying to rape an innocent child.” She snapped. The boars laughed as they advanced on her. Raven didn't even bother to use her blade. She threw it towards the child were it pierced the ground near her. The girl looked up in fright at the sword but Raven quickly activated the miko shield in the blade from her fang.

 

“You look delicious, demoness.” One of the boars said as he sniffed the air. “And smell good too…going into heat?” Shit, she forgot about that. Oh well, just meant her temper was ripe for the pickin'.

 

“Come closer and I will give you a taste.” She purred. The boars looked at each other and grinned as they stepped closer. That was all that Raven needed. Calling forth the Shadow Flame, it engulfed her fist as she slammed it into the face of the nearest boar. He cried out in pain as the Flame engulfed him but Raven ran her fist through his gut. He hit his knees as he choked to death on his own blood. The other three had enough common sense to back away. By this time, the rest of the Inu Tachi and company had entered the clearing but with one snarl they stayed back. Summoning the Shadow Flame again she formed it into a whip. She lashed out at the remaining boars, slowing tearing the bodies apart until one remained. Raven pounced upon the youkai until he was on the ground with her above him. She sneered down at him. She grabbed him by his throat.

 

“Males like you make me sick.” She hissed as her claws began to glow black. “Preying upon innocent females who cannot defend their selves, tell me, what would you have done after you finished tearing her innocence from her? Leave her here to die and suffer with no honor?” the boar stammered his apologies but Raven wasn't hearing any of it. She rammed her claws into his eyes and ripped them out. The boar hit the ground screaming in agony as black veins appeared on his body making him convulse. He twitched upon the ground as boils began to appear; they popped emitting a black substance that sizzled when it hit the ground. When Raven got sick of hearing his screams, she stepped on the boars head, crushing his skull.

 

Kagome ran to the bushes and became violently sick. Kuwabara followed right after. It took a lot of will from the others not to lose what they ate earlier that morning. Raven took a deep breath. The smell of rotting boar filled the clearing but it soothed her inner beast enough for her to chain it back again. She looked down at herself and wrinkled her nose. She was going have to take another bath. Taking another deep breath she walked over to the shield. Running her claw down the shield caused it to drop. She yanked the blade from the ground and knelt down next to the shivering girl. She reached out but watched as she recoiled. That hurt more than anything.

 

“I won't hurt you.” Raven's voice came out haggard. “Please, let me look at your wounds.” The little girl looked at the demoness a moment before she lunged at her and began to cry. Raven cuddled the child close to her as she watched the others. Her eyes darted to the dragon and Kagome nodded. She went over to check upon the youkai.

 

“Oh hell no.” Inu Yasha said as he looked at the dragon more closely. “Leave them be, Raven.” She growled at him. He backed down a bit. “They're my brother's wards, leave them be.”

 

“A fine protector he is.” Raven snarled, startling everyone. She stood up with the child upon her hip. “What's your name, little one?”

 

“Rin.” The little girl answered. Raven smiled.

 

“I am Raven.” Rin grinned back revealing several missing teeth. “Now, let's look at your wounds.” Raven poked and prodded but Rin remained silent. Finally Raven's finger began to glow a lavender color for her miko healing as all Rins scratches were healed. Ah-Un was back on his feet, ever the faithful dragon had immediately gone to check on the girl. Finally, Hiei was able to get some sense into Raven and at least convinced her to get the child away from the carcasses. She snorted at him as they went up in the Shadow Flame. She turned on her heal with Rin still on her hip, followed by Ah-Un.

 

“I have never seen Raven fight with anything but her blades.” Kagome whispered as she watched the Shadow Flame disperse.

 

“Hope you never have to see it again.” Hiei muttered.

 

“What was that?” Yusuke asked.

 

“Shadow Flame.” Sango said. “From the darkest pits of hell, shadow fire hounds can bend it to their wills; make it into anything they desire. The black substance from her claws is usually called the Final Sight. They admit it through their enemy's eyes.”

 

“Usually?” Inu Yasha sounded skeptical.

 

“It can be sprayed too, Inu Yasha.” Miroku said as he too glanced around the clearing. “Let us not forget for one moment what Lady Raven is.” Youko walked to the spot where Raven once stood and took a deep breath. There was something off about her scent. For the first time, he cursed not having a better nose. Inu Yasha saw what the fox was doing and headed over. The moment he got near he leapt back.

 

“Fuck! We need to get back to Raven now!” he said as he began to run off.

 

“Inu Yasha, what is wrong!” Miroku demanded. Inu Yasha looked at them like they were crazy before he shook his head.

 

“I forgot you guys can't smell as good as me. Raven is beginning to go into heat, she's a walking target. Not to mention it explains why she was all pissy. At least she took her frustration out on the boars and not one of us.”

 

“I can hear you perfectly fine.” Raven snapped from where she was building a fire. It appeared Jaken was awake because he was trying to decide whether he should get Rin out of there or chance the demoness's protection.

 

“Why didn't you say anything?” Kagome asked. Raven shrugged.

 

“Didn't feel it coming until the boars mentioned it. Its no matter, I will go off on my own for a while until it dies down.” She cleaned Rin from the blood still on her body while completely ignoring her own state.

 

“Raven…” Kagome began but Raven cut her off.

 

“Would you rather I find the first available male and have him take care of my problem?” she demanded. Kagome violently shook her head.

 

“Then I will go off for a while. I will be fine; I am capable of handling myself.” Raven snapped. She didn't mean to be so harsh, but she was on edge. And with the beginning of her heat, she could feel every male around her. “Sesshomaru is about 15 miles off. Give him about five minutes and he will smell the blood.”

 

“You can sense him?” Miroku asked as he pushed out his awareness still feeling nothing. Raven shook her head.

 

“No, I can feel him. And then you might want to step back. This is going to get ugly.” The males understood perfectly what she meant. The females looked at Raven like she had gone crazy but were pulled back to the tree line.

 

“What is going on?” Kagome hissed at Hiei who had her around the waist. He looked down at her and had to remind himself that she didn't understand territoriality of male youkai. He sighed.

 

“Imagine for a moment that you guard another life with your own. You step away and return to the smell of blood on the air. How do you react?” he asked her. Kagome's eyes got wide before she nodded her head in understanding.

 

“So, he's going to be angry. And Raven's angry at him too.” Kagome said and Hiei barely nodded. “This is going to be worse then when she called him Lord Fluffy.” She sighed. The rest of the Inu Tachi silently agreed as they watch Raven stand up before Rin, Jaken, and Ah-Un. She was still slightly wet and her white shirt had become practically see-through. Her black hakamas clung to her legs caked in blood and other gore. Her hair was still pilled upon her head with the unruly strands making her look like an avenging angel. To Youko, she was absolutely breath-taking.

 

Finally, the rest felt the youkai spike of Sesshomaru as he headed their way. In no time he burst through the clearing. His eyes found Raven first, taking in her appearance before noticing that Rin was safe and whole. He breathed a sigh of relief before looking to Raven again. His breath hitched. She was a dark goddess guarding his ward with her own life. He already knew that she had saved Rin because he had recognized her scent in the clearing. Now that he stood before her, he marveled at her form and took in her heady scent laced with her upcoming heat. This was going to be a confrontation to remember.

 

A/N: I am going to leave it there, as a nice little cliffy! Not because I am mean…no…I am getting these chapters out pretty quick since I haven't started my job yet! Just remember…REVIEW!!!
