Chapter 1: Just like the stock market crash. Not a big deal. Right?
:In the spirit world:
Whoever said that the gods had it all under control have obviously never been in one of their offices. Normally, the demigod's office is a busy train wreck. Today, though, has toped the charts. It reminded Botan of Black Tuesday except instead of young men screaming about stocks, and crying as they watched their life work went down the drain while numbers dropped drastically on big boards, their was ogres screaming about the world ending, papers flying around crazily and the ogres that were not running around where crying under their desks sucking their thumbs and rocking back and forth. For a minute Botan stood there, taking in the calamity, and wishing drastically that she could turn around and go back to bed. Sighing, she squared her shoulders and marched up to the double doors leading to her bosses office. She opened the door, as well as her mouth to start yelling but…he was not there. Her brows furrowed and she frowned. “He’s always in there…where could that baby have gone?”. She closed the door and turned around. Picking out the one ogre that would know where he would be, Botan rubbed her temples when she realized he was one of the ones running around like a chicken with his head cut off. Materializing her oar she walked slowly, holding it like a batter getting ready to hit a home run. Before she could knock the frantic ogre out, he turned around and when his eyes landed on her his hysterical voice got a bit louder.
“Botan! It’s horrible! These things! In Makai! THEY ARE HIDIOUS! Well no they aren’t but still! They aren’t real Botan! King Enma is soo mad Koema’s in there now! What are we going to do?! The world is going to end!!!”
At this final exclamation, George picked the surprised ferry girl up by her shoulders and proceeded to shake her frantically. A vein popped in the girls forehead and with a crash the wooden oar still in her hand came crashing down on his head. His eyes glazed over and he slowly dropped her before crashing to the ground with a huge thud. Everyone around her stopped what they where doing, and those hiding under their desk popped out for a second and everyone turned to look her in a moment of silence. Botan smiled slowly and hid the oar behind her back. When they continued to stare, her vein came back out.
“WHAT ARE YOU GUYS LOOKING AT?!” She yelled, throwing her hands in the air.
With that everyone went back to a screaming, crying rage, completely forgetting the angry ferry girl. Botan sighed and decided she would wait in Koema’s office till he returned from his fathers office. If he returned at all….
:In Enma’s office:
“But father I swear that my teams did all they could possibly do! There was nothing that could stop them and they received horrible wounds trying to too!” Koema’s frustration was straining in his voice, despite his efforts to keep it under control.
There was silence in the moment King Enma spent sitting on his throne, contemplating his sons words. “Son I think we might be in trouble. I believe I know what you speak of. Long ago wise men prophesied that neither a demon, nor human, would come to earth from realm unknown. Until I heard the details of what your teams have found, I thought it silly. However, I feel the need to look this prophecy up, for something within me tells me that we may have a problem.”
Koema sat in wide eyed silence at his fathers words. “Wait you believe me?” he asked in astonishment. “ How do you know?”
His father looked down at him with one eyebrow raised. “You are going to question the intuition of your father, a GOD?” he asked coldly.
Koema stuttered at his fathers cold voice. “N-n-no! I just mean that um….what would you have me do father?” Koema put his head down and prayed that his father would react calmly to his submission.
“Hmm… look up the underworld. Search for the best warriors that have died, even if they are under lock and key. I want all of the strongest demons, humans, priests, bad guys, good guys I do not care I want EVERYTHING looked up. Any sort of potential is to be filed and ready for my review. And I want you to prepare transfers for their souls to return to the spirit realm. I also want you to draw up binding agreements in trade for theirs lives. I want all this done before I get back from my library. And if these requests are not fulfilled by then….you know what will happen to you.”
Koema gulped and shook his head earnestly. With a wave of his hand, his father dismissed him and Koema scrambled out of the throne room and shimmied out of the big doors that would separate him from his father. As soon as the door closed behind him, there was a ‘pop!’ and the mature young man was transformed into a toddler. With a sigh and a slump of his shoulders, he dragged his hand across his face. “Man, am I in trouble.”
:With Botan in Koema’s office:
She flipped slowly through the girly magazine that had been sitting under his desk, kept there for times like this. She knows she should be out ferrying souls, but she thought finding out what was going on was more important. She knew trying the ogres again would be a waste of time, they were nothing but hysterical masses of blubber right now. So when the door started to open, her eyes immediately snapping to the slow moving object and her feet slipping off their comfortable position on his desk. She threw the magazine back in its crate under his desk and sat up straight. Koema floated in, looking like he had just been through hell. Which, when dealing with Enma, is the equivalent. His shoulders where slumped and his eyes had a tired look about them, hell even his constant sucking on his pacifier was slower and more lethargic. She got up and out of his seat and he floated by her not even bothering to acknowledge her, whereas normally whenever she was caught in his seat she would be yelled at.
“Koema….are you ok? You look like hell.” Botan asked, slowly inching her way away form the baby ruler.
Koema sighed and slumped down in his chair letting his hat topple over, covering his eyes. “No….” he mumbled rubbing his temples.
“What’s going on? Everyone out there is acting like the world is coming to an end.” She asked slipping herself in the chair across from him.
Once again Koema sighed, but this time he pushed his hat up and sat up straight, moving his chair to the computer and began typing away furiously. “Prepare yourself Botan, this is going to get hectic.”
:Later in down town Kyoto.:
The wind was playful in mid spring. It was chilly, but not enough to keep people inside and sunny enough to bring them out. Three young men walked down the sidewalk, laughing and talking in an excited nature. Two of them wrestled around like children while the other looked on in silent amusement. It was a peaceful day, the kind these boys do not see often. Their friends where all meeting at the mall to pretend to be normal young adults. Half a block away from the mall, one of their beepers went off and all laughing and joking immediately vanished. One of them, tall, with dark hair and a sun kissed tan an deep set eyes pulled a makeup compact from his front pocket while mumbling about ‘damn toddlers ruining my day’. With a quick flick of his wrist the compact flipped open, revealing a blue haired girl with bubble gum pink eyes and a not so authentic smile.
“What the hell do you want Botan. We are not coming in today! We have plans!” the man barked into the compact startling the passer-bys who looked at him like he was crazy. One of the other guys noticed this and flicked his red hair behind his ears before grabbing the other two’s shoulders and steering them into a corner between shops that lined the walk.
“Yuuske I do NOT need your attitude right now ok? We need your guys’ help gathering people from the demon world and passing information to them.” Botan yelled, exasperated with the boy’s constant attitude about his job.
“I don’t care Botan that’s not even important!!” Yuuske yelled into the compact, flailing his arms around in frustration. Once again the man with red hair sighed, and pulled the compact gently from Yuuske’s hand and clearing his throat.
“Why exactly do we have to do this Botan?” he asked calmly, ignoring his partner’s ranting about stupid ferry girls thinking they can boss him around.
“Kurama I really cant tell you right now, you’ll all find out soon enough but right now its important that you get these people to do as we say or else you, me, Koema, and everyone else involved is going to be in a world of trouble wit Enma.” She was tired, and the teams inability to cooperate was really getting on her nerves. Not for the first time she thanked the gods for Kurama. Without him nothing would ever get done with the Spirit Detectives.
When a slightly shorter man dressed in all black materialized beside them, none of the guys flinched. When he spoke though, all heads turned to him.
“Hn. And what makes you think we would do this without knowing why?” His voice was low and gruff but he spoke with an actual curiosity that rarely graced his voice.
“Because you will know as soon as you do what your told.” Botan’s voice was sharp and irritated. For some reason, despite her normal patience with the mean little fire apprentice, she was in no mood to deal with his rebellious nature or smartass comments.
The man looked down at the compact with disgust. “and if I want to know NOW onna?” he asked with distaste.
“Well pooh on you because You. Will. Find. Out. Later.” with that last remark Botan turned back to Kurama. “Please get them to do it. We do not have time for childish ego trips or retarded defiance. For once trust me when I say this is important.” she paused, looking at Kurama deeply. “You will receive a list of names on the screen as soon as I click off and as soon as I tell you the message a portal will appear behind the store your currently standing in front of. Ok. Now the message is this: ‘Portal to Koema’s office for important and worth while meeting will appear exactly two hours after you receive this message.” she looked down for a second and they felt a nearby portal open. With one last strained smile, she bid them good bye. “Hurry boys we need them all here around the same time. Good luck.” With that the screen went blank before a loading sign appeared and it uploaded a list of 7 people.
“Well shit!” Yuuske exclaimed as they jogged around the corner and up to the portal. “Keiko’s going to kill me!!”
:Other side of the portal:
Once on the other side of the swirling purple vortex, the boys landed either on their feet or on their asses, in the heart of Makai.
“Shit that hurt. Urameshi help me up will ya?” The other boy proclaimed.
“Jeesh Kuwabara you weigh a ton.” Yuuske Urameshi complained as he lifted his taller, heavier friend up off his back.
“Hn. How are we going to split up if the oaf has to tag along with one of us?” The smartass demon in black was still standing when they hit the ground, and was currently looking down at Kuwabara with repulsion arms crossed in a bored manner.
“Hey shorty! I can handle myself you know!” The newly vertical man yelled, still brushing off the back of his pants.
Once again Kurama decided to intervene before it got out of hand. “Hiei I’m sure that Kuwabara will be just fine with Yuuske so he can keep him out of trouble and Yuuske can keep him from being taken as a slave. As for you and me we can separate and we can all meet back here to go home. Me and Hiei will take most of the names since we can travel farther, faster. However Yuuske, you and Kuwabara can take Jin, Touya Rinku and Chu, since we are sure you will face no hostility from them, me and Hiei will split a wolf leader named Koga, a demon lord named Sesshomaru, his daughter named Rin, and a thief named Foxfire. I think since we do not know them they will take more skill to sway them.” he concluded.
Once they got their information down they split, all going separate ways to find their own demons to persuade.
:Same spot, later.:
Hiei was back first, then Kurama. They sat in companionable silence, Hiei in a tree and Kurama under it, waiting for Yuuske and Kuwabara to arrive. Both where in their own thoughts for a long time before Kurama broke it.
“Yoko wants to know if yours said they would come.” He asked silently, knowing the fire apprentice would hear him.
It took a long time for Hiei to answer, although Kurama did not expect one at all. “The dog said no but his daughter convinced him to when she said she was going.” Hiei left the unanswered question hang over Kurama’s head, and when he did not answer it, he grew impatient. “Fox…” he growled through the link in their minds.
“Yes my hot little firecracker?” Yoko replied from within Kurama’s mind. Kurama let out a sigh, “Yoko I personally do not want to get disemboweled tonight. Please refrain from riling Hiei up.”
“Fox answer my damn question and stop fucking with me.” Hiei wore sometimes that fox was going to be the death of him. Or the death of himself….whichever comes first.
“But my darling, you did not ask a question so how can I answer one?” the fox replied, thoroughly enjoying messing with Hiei. “And I can do a lot more then fuck with your brain Hiei if ever your curiosity gets the better of you.”
Deciding he was not going to die tonight, Kurama decided to answer Hiei without his other half’s help. “The wolf was easy to persuade. He owns Koema for something. The thief was not. He said he might but it depends on his mood. I told him there was something in it for him but I’m not sure if that will be enough to persuade him.”
That seemed to be enough for Hiei since he let out a soft “Hn.” and grew quiet again. It was not for long though. “Hiei what do you think this mission was for? I do not understand why we could not know before hand what we where coming here for.”
As usual, the silent demon did not answer right away. “How should I know. The baby is out to kill us.”
Kurama could not help but laugh at his friends hostile attitude. “He’s not out to kill us Hiei, we are too valuable to him.” Even as he corrected Hiei, Kurama could not help wondering why their boss would send them into something with no prior knowledge of the situation. It was not like the toddler size ruler at all.
It was not long after the short conversation that the missing team members, Yuuske and Kuwabara, came back, complaining loudly about the long walk.
“So Yuuske was your mission successful?” Kurama asked politely.
Yuuske threw himself to the ground with a grunt. “Yea I guess they all said they would go. Or at least consider it. But you know those finicky mother fuckers will go just to know what is so important.” He then proceeded to stretch out on the ground and close his eyes.
“Urameshi what the hell do you think your doing?!” Kuwabara asked noisily as he walked up and kicked Yuuske’s foot. “We got to get going! We have got to get to the spirit world to see what the hell is going on up there that has Koema’s diaper in a bunch so much that he has Miss Botan stressed out!” Kuwabara was worried. He had one of his gut feelings that told him something major was going down. Hell if he was going to tell the boys that though. They would just make fun of him for it and tell him he was too soft. He frowned. “They really should trust my instincts more often. I mean come on! They trust their own! Why not mine?”
“Shit Kuwabara. Give it a rest will you!” Yuuske sighed and sat up. “Fuck your like a nagging women! Cant even rest around you!” Pulling out his communicator, Yuuske continued to rant and rave about Kuwabara’s impatience as he connected with Botan. When his eyes caught her blue hair he barked out a command to make a portal to the Spirit world and shut the compact again.
No more then fifteen seconds passed before another swirling portal appeared before them and one by one the four boys jumped in, and came out in Koema’s office. When they got there though, they were confronted with a scene they were not expecting.
AN: so this is the first chapter, probably needs a lot more work but once I see how people like the story, ill go back and start editing.
Next chapter wont be up for a day or two but reviews would speed things up!
