Chap ter 16 – Graduation Speeches and Wedding Bells

Inuyasha remembered that originally, Kagome had wanted to wait until she had graduated from high school before having the wedding. Since the wedding itself had always been more for her sake than his, she already being his mate after all, he was perfectly fine with waiting. Besides, her graduation was only a couple months away, and apparently, humans in this era needed around that much time to prepare for a wedding, anyway. Kagome was remarkably unfussy when it came to the specifics, she was just happy to have her Inuyasha, and found she didn’t care much about the rest. But picking out the rings had been fun, as well as her dress. She let her mother decide most other things, such as the floral and seating arrangements, the food, etc.

Inuyasha had decided to stay at Kagome’s during those last couple months, unwilling to be parted with her, and not wanting to separate her from her family unnecessarily early, as she’d be moving in with him, obviously, after they were married. Kagome’s mother had been made aware of most everything that had transpired in Inuyasha’s life after the tragedy, as well as between him and her daughter, both before, and after the fact. She’d caught a glimpse once of her making mark, and decided to ask her about it in private when Inuyasha was in one of his rare business meetings. Kagome confessed that they hadn’t waited until the wedding, confessing still, that her first time was in fact, with young Inuyasha from the past, before Kikyo broke the well. Kagome’s mother wasn’t upset, knowing how much her daughter and her soon-to-be son-in-law were in love with each other. She’d also learned that it was Inuyasha, or Yash Takumi as he officially goes by these days, that had saved their shrine from foreclosure when her father was young.

She knew that Kagome and Inuyasha had performed a ritual to make her immortal like him, but there again she wasn’t upset, but was glad rather, that they could live their long lives together, as she found herself reminiscing over memories with her own husband.

Preparing the guest list, Kagome’s mother found that they’d be inviting more people to the wedding than originally planned. They’d wanted to keep it small and quiet, during the night of the new moon, in an attempt to hide Inuyasha’s youkai side, but now, half of Kagome’s guests seemed to be youkai themselves. They’d discussed the possibility of just coming clean with her friends and telling them all the truth, rather than having everybody disguise their true appearances, but nobody objected to hiding their demonic sides, as it was something they were fully accustomed to.

Only Inuyasha went along with her family to the graduation, her friends already having met him once, and knowing he had white hair, they’d decided it wouldn’t be that big of a deal. He dressed down, jeans and a t-shirt, a simple ball cap over his ears, and shades over his yellow eyes, which didn’t look out of place, as the ceremony was outdoors.

Kagome was slightly amazed that she’d actually graduated, considering how much school she’d missed during the years, and how many tests she had gotten poor marks on when she was there. But she studied hard for her finals, and Inuyasha helped her where he could. He was fairly good at math, a subject she hated, and he also helped refresh her memory on some English that she’d forgotten. One subject she did exceptionally well with on her own, was naturally, history.

During the last couple months of school, Kagome came clean about Inuyasha, sort of. She didn’t tell them the whole truth, that he was a 700 year old inu hanyou she’d originally met when she fell down a magic time portal landing in the feudal era, no, she wouldn’t tell them that, at least not yet. She did tell them how much more serious their relationship had grown, that he had dismissed the other woman (killed would be too harsh a word), and now that she was of age, they planned on marrying as soon as she was out of school. Ayumi couldn’t have been happier for her, instantly giving her a big hug that nearly knocked her over. Eri and Yuka were skeptical at first, but declared that if she was happy, then they were happy for her, as they’d always just been concerned about her happiness, and knew as well as Ayumi, how in love with Inuyasha Kagome had always been. When she told them all the date of the wedding, they of course, immediately agreed that they wouldn’t miss it for the world. It was harder for Kagome to tell Hojo, but he took the news well enough, suspecting there’d been another in her heart for quite some time. He also gladly accepted the invitation.

They decided to just go ahead and have the wedding during the day, since Kagome’s friends already knew Inuyasha to have white hair, anyway. It was a little unusual, but he could get away with wearing a hat, a nice hat, so that took care of the ears. Since they’d be in close proximity with so many humans, not just Kagome’s friends, but also her friend’s parents, her mother’s friends, Sota’s girlfriend and her parents, as well as the priest and caterers, and who knows who else, Inuyasha decided to clip his claws down, as well as wear colored contact lenses. He’d done it before, during some select business meetings. He had to mind how he talked, to keep his fangs from showing, but that was something he was accustomed to as well. When the guests started to arrive, Kagome could instantly pick up the scents of who they were, even before stepping outside to greet them. They were, of course, having the wedding on the shrine grounds, at the base of the Goshinboku tree, could you think of a better place? She had to do a double take when she saw Sesshomaru, he didn’t look like himself. He was using that illusion he’d acquired the ability to project, making his hair black, eyes brown, as well as remove his stripes, fangs, and claws. Of course, Kagome could no longer be fooled by such a glamour any more than a youkai could, for she could clearly sense his youki, as well as smell his scent as an inu youkai. Shippo, on the other hand, had the kitsune ability to completely mask himself, appearing again in his human disguise, Kagome would have thought him human, if she hadn’t already seen him like this before. She assumed the “human” female he was with was actually Izime, she’d since had the pleasure of meeting Shippo’s intended. Kagura had no fangs or claws to hide, and only needed to wear her hair down, and put in contacts. Marugu was also there, with his mate and children. He’d been busy with his own life and Kagome hadn’t interacted with him much, but he wouldn’t miss it. His mate was also inu, a once servant of the castle. They wore contacts and clipped their claws, styling their hair to hide their ears, since only Sesshomaru had the strength to conceal himself with illusion. Nakishi was also there, of course, and she’d brought Kirara along with her. Since there was no real way to hide the fact that she had two tails, Kirara stayed inside the Higurashi house, where she could roam freely, and instantly found a friend in Buyo. Jaken was even there, which made Kagome chuckle. With age nearly matching Sesshomaru’s, he could also (likely with Sesshomaru’s help) throw up a small glamour, which could basically only mask his green skin, and roughly correct his facial features. He was still just as short, and made the most amusing looking little person, having almost a comical appearance when you mix it with Jaken’s trademark personality. He brought new meaning to the term Napoleon Complex. Kagome had, at one point, found the courage to ask about Koga and the other wolves. Inuyasha wasn’t jealous, not any more, and was able to track them down for her, and informed them all of the wedding. It was a tearful reunion for Ginta and Hakaku who couldn’t stop calling her “sister” even though Ayame was Koga’s woman now.

Kagome found herself staring back at the scene before her in utter amazement. She was dumbfounded at just how there could be so many youkai around so many humans, with none of the humans any wiser. She wondered how many times she’d passed a youkai by and didn’t know it, before she’d gained her new senses. She also reminded herself to thank her grandfather for not freaking out and flinging sutras at everyone, as he understood, this was simply a part of who she was now. He didn’t blindly trust the other youkai that were on the shrine grounds, nor would anyone expect him to, after years of holy training, however, he had come to trust Inuyasha, and knew then, that his granddaughter was safe.

When the ceremony started, Kagome suddenly found herself feeling more nervous than she should be. After all, the usual reason one would feel nervous during their wedding wasn’t really a concern. But what had started as a ‘formality’ to honor her human heritage had turned into a full blown celebration of love. The love she and Inuyasha shared for each other, the love of her and his family, their friends, past and present, everyone. Having spent so much of his life around humans now, Inuyasha understood the importance of a wedding. It wasn’t the marriage, being ‘married’ didn’t matter to him, because being ‘married’ was like being ‘mated’ which they already were. But the wedding, the wedding was a symbol to the world, for everyone to see, a public declaration of his love for Kagome, she deserved no less. They opted for a mostly western style ceremony, he dressed in a tux, they threw in the top hat (necessary to hide his ears), and decided not to end there, with the gloves, spats, and cane even! Kagome mused that any minute, he'd start singing Putting on the Ritz.

After all, he was worth a million (actually much more), but so, might as well look it, right?

Kagome was just as stunning in her custom made Vera Wang wedding gown. White silks and satins inner mixing with tulle and lace. It accentuated every curve, concealed every flaw (not that she really had any!) and made her literally look and feel like a princess. She had her hair fixed in a traditional style, pinned up with elaborate ornaments. She had surprised even Inuyasha when she refused to put any makeup concealment over her mate mark. It was now healed, and what was once a red dog-bite was now a silvery crescent scar. It was important to her. Even though her human friends didn’t know what the mark was (or where it came from), they had already all seen it, and those relatives that came in she wouldn’t be seeing again soon so their opinions didn’t matter to her. Since there were just as many youkai, if not more, than humans present, and she had joined their clan, now having their senses, being immortal, mated to a hanyou, she felt as close to being youkai as any human could, and she wore her mark with pride.

Her friends all gasped in disbelief at first her dress, then Inuyasha, then everything. Kagome’s family wasn’t rich, so where did this money come from? Unless…..

“Did I forget to mention that Inuyasha’s part of the Takumi family?” Kagome jokingly snickered as they stared at her dumbfoundedly.

“Uh, yeah!” They all kind of replied in unison.

Since Kagome didn’t feel like going into details regarding parallel timelines, etc., she felt she couldn’t very well tell them that he hadn’t been before, but is now, and since they were already giving her stares like how could you keep this from us she opted for the closet thing she could think of to the truth.

“I didn’t know.” She shrugged off, misleading as it was.

She led the impression to be that he’d kept it from her because he wanted to see if she’d ever care for him, really for him, and not for the money.

That was certainly believable, right?

They bought it, squealing with jealous congratulations as if she’d just won on some sort of reality show, ending up with the guy, and then getting money to boot!

She was glad she’d told them in advance, other wise when the man said “Do you, Yash Takumi, take Kagome Higurashi……..” she was sure they would have screamed, fainted, or both.

After the ceremony was over, her three friends each took their turn congratulating the young couple, while drooling over the new groom. She knew they’d never again be telling her she should loose him, at least. Hojo was sweet enough with his congratulations, and swore to always be Kagome’s friend. She couldn’t help but feel a little guilty over possibly breaking his heart, and she decided not to enlighten him regarding their family tree, at least just yet. Everyone else departing for the evening as well, Kagome and Inuyasha made the final rounds of saying their goodbyes to everyone, before retiring themselves. Though they were going to Inuyasha’s suite tonight, they’d be back in the morning, to spend the day with Kagome’s family, as she begins to pack up her life at the shrine, transplanting it into the hotel.
