A Deeper Destiny: Chapter Eight

Kagome stood alone in the room that served as her walk-in closet and dressing area. Clad in a deep azure kimono embroidered with white sakura blossoms and a stark white silk obi, she released her hair from its confines and allowed it so spill down her back and over her shoulders. The silken black mass that tumbled around her was soon combed and arranged neatly, gleaming in the soft candle light. Glancing at her reflection, she quirked a corner of her mouth. The woman who stared back at her seemed too beautiful, too mature to be Kagome Higurashi. She remembered the days she’d spent as a normal teenage girl back in the future. Those thoughts gave way to her time-traveling days spent with Inuyasha and the others. As memories curled around her like a lazy breeze, a feeling of grief washed over her. She missed them, each and every one. Sango’s kind and sisterly ways, Miroku’s wisdom and lecherousness, Kirara’s constant vigilant presence, Shippo’s addiction to sugar and chocolate and how he was truly her son; if not by blood, then by heart. Kaede and her wizened knowledge, her grandmotherly manner. Kikyo’s calm and deliberateness. Her heart clenched as Inuyasha emerged from the dark recesses of her mind. A watery smile appeared on her face as she thought of her silver-haired Hanyou.
Silver hair and golden eyes made her think of Sesshoumaru. The lord of the Western Lands was quickly becoming her greatest comfort and favorite past time. The stoic Inu-Youkai had always managed to make her smile, without even trying. It was in everything that he said or did, the small details that showed he cared. And it never ceased to amaze her how open he was with her. He smiled in her presence, allowed emotions to color his voice and fill his eyes; and left himself almost totally unguarded when he was with her. They could spend hours in each other’s company, not a word exchanged. She usually sat in his lap while he breathed in the scent of her hair, both enjoying the weather, the scenery, and each other’s presence. There were times when she’d sing a song, Sesshoumaru listening intently, his eyes belying his rapture. And when they weren’t out sitting in the garden or in some field, they were training in the dojo, or spending time with Rin. Kagome smiled as memories of the last two weeks at Sesshoumaru’s palace flooded back to her.
Tossing her hair over her shoulder, she placed her comb back on the vanity and left her room to the front hall, where the object of her thoughts stood. He glanced over his shoulder at her as she approached, his eyes twinkling with affection. She offered him a warm smile, to which he returned with a small one of his own.
“You are ready to leave, I presume?” Sesshoumaru offered her a hand.
“Yes,” she said as she placed her own hand into his larger one. He delicately wrapped his fingers around it and pulled her close as his cloud of Youkai gathered at their feet. Wrapping an arm around her waist securely, they took off into the darkening sky. The azure-eyed miko immediately noticed they were traveling in the direction of Inuyasha’s Forest. Turning to Sesshoumaru and stepping closer to his strong, warm form, she tiptoed so that he would be able to hear her over the wind. “What’s this surprise you were telling me about, Sesshou? I know were heading towards Inuyasha’s Forest. What’s there?” The Taiyoukai merely raised a brow at her and remained silent. Pouting, she looked down and leaned against his chest, relishing the body heat that radiated off of him.
It was not much longer until they touched ground. Kagome looked at Sesshoumaru questioningly when she’d realized they’d once again come to the clearing where Goshinboku and Inuyasha’s grave resided. Instead of giving her an answer, he took her hand and led her towards the god tree. Careful not to step on Inuyasha’s grave, he brought them right up to its old, wizened trunk, and lifted the hand that was still in his to the scar in the bark. The very spot that Kikyo’s enchanted arrow pierced the tree and pinned Inuyasha to it.
Kagome gasped as a soft white light glowed from where her hand touched the tree. Sesshoumaru pulled his hand away and stepped back as small orbs of soft light surrounded Kagome and lifted her into the air so that her arm was level with the scar. Realizing the area she was touching was no longer solid, her hand ventured further and the raven-haired woman gasped once again as her hand disappeared into the bark. Her hand disappeared into the pool of white light, the surface rippling as more of her arm entered. It was not until half of her forearm entered the tree that she felt something. The object was thin, and most likely long. Grasping the item, she pulled her arm back. Her eyes grew wide as she was placed back on the ground, the object gripped firmly in he right hand.
“Tetsuaiga,” she whispered softly, raw emotion texturing her voice. She looked up at the silent Inu-Youkai standing before her. Her eyes glimmered with gathering tears. She was speechless for a few minutes, her throat constricting with emotion. “Ariga--” She began, only to be cut off.
“Your gratitude does not rightfully belong to me,” he said gently, nodding in the direction of Inuyasha’s grave. Kagome blinked back tears as she nodded and turned to kneel at the base of the tree. Tears coursed down her cheeks silently, the rustle of the breeze through the trees the only sound. It was minutes later that she rose from the ground and stared at the old rusted katana in her hands.
“Sesshoumaru, before we became allies, before we became friends.. Back when we were. Enemies. You never really wanted to kill Inuyasha did you?” Sesshoumaru frowned. “I mean, you had several chances. You could have killed him at any time. Yet you didn’t. Those times you came to ‘kill Inuyasha,’ they were tests, not threats to his life.” Kagome looked up at him, then towards Inuyasha’s grave. “If you really hated him so much, why didn’t you kill him after Naraku was defeated? Why did you honor his last wishes and give him kind and proper burial? You would never admit it, but you did care for your brother, even if his blood was tainted.” Sesshoumaru stood frozen, Kagome’s words resonating in his head. “I know you didn’t like him, you didn’t have to. . .But thank you. For doing all this for him. Honoring him.” She stood silently, her face hidden in the shadows, her tears glistening in the faint light shining through the tree branches. She was startled when he embraced her.
“Inuyasha and I . . .weren’t on the best terms. But I will admit that for one of tainted blood, he had my respect.” The Taiyoukai stumbled hesitantly over his words. Kagome nodded and gave him a watery smile, wiping away her tears. He pulled her into another hug, trying his best to reassure her.
“Why not give it a try,” Kagome shivered a bit as the Taiyoukai murmured softly, “maybe Tetsuaiga will work for you.” He strode away from her and turned so that they were a short distance apart, facing each other.
“Won’t I hurt you?”
“I’ll use Tenseiga to deflect it.” Nodding, Kagome pulled the blade from its sheath, eyes widening as the fang grew to its fully transformed state. Dropping the sheath and gripping Tetsuaiga in both hands, her eyes narrowed in focus as the blade pulsed. A blue aura grew around the hilt and spiraled up the fang, signifying the wind scar.
“Wind Scar!” Kagome made a clean slash in the direction of Sesshoumaru, eyes dancing as the sword obeyed and the wind scar lashed out at Sesshoumaru. He Taiyoukai quickly pulled out Tenseiga and deflected the attack, sheathing the sword and walking back to Kagome as she sheathed her blade as well. She smiled up brightly at Sesshoumaru as he stopped in front of her, Tetsuaiga held in her right hand. He offered her a smile in return and pulled a silk-wrapped bundle from his haori.
She poked the package curiously before accepting it and peeling back the silk. She gasped as she pulled a shorter version of Sesshoumaru’s blue and gold obi. She was marveling over the silkiness of the texture when he lifted it out of her hands and encircled her waist with it. With utmost gentleness, he tied the obi in a neat bow at her right hip, then placed Tetsuaiga at her left hip.
Kagome blushed prettily as she looked up at him while he worked. Her heart sped up; beating wildly as she realized how close he was standing to her, stomach doing flip flops as she noticed the tenderness with which he tied the obi round her waist. She took in his unguarded eyes, lit up by some emotion she couldn’t identify. She was still staring up at him when he finished and looked down into her face.
She blushed as he caught her staring, but couldn’t avert her gaze; seeing as a certain Taiyoukai held it. His face slowly descended and she found herself rising up on her tiptoes-- their lips meeting softly and tenderly. Her eyes fluttered shut as his arms snaked around her waist and pulled her close as her own arms wound around his neck. Her heart felt as though it was about to burst as he hungrily pressed his lips to hers, her soul soared as his arms tightened even more around her, as though she would disappear if he didn’t hold her tight.
She shivered as his tongue brushed against her bottom lip. Obeying his silent request, she parted her lips and his appendage delved into her mouth. As his tongue coaxed hers into the age-old dance, her knees grew weak and buckled, but his strong arms held her to him as she melted into his hard, muscled form. She reveled in the passion and emotion that he poured into the kiss, amazed by the tenderness with which he kissed her.
Resting his forehead against hers, Sesshoumaru stared into the swirling sapphire depths of Kagome’s eyes. His chest swelled with happiness and his entire being felt at peace. Is this what his father had found with Izayoi? He placed a soft, chaste kiss to Kagome’s lips again, awed by the way she so readily accepted him. A loud crash in the underbrush behind them had them swerving and tensing for battle in a second. Sesshoumaru’s shoulders relaxed as a bird flew from the clearing and fireflies emerged. Kagome giggled, smiling happily up the Inu-Youkai.
After the last of the fireflies danced away into the night, Sesshoumaru took Kagome into his arms and took off for the skies.
“You two must have been adorable as pups.” Repeating the term he’d used earlier in a sing-song tone, she smiled. “Like little puppies.” She reached an arm up to catch his ear, but he caught her arm and toyed with the deep blue sleeve that had slid down her arm during its ascent.
“This Sesshoumaru was never a puppy.” His tone held disdain, but his eyes were lit up with amusement. “Inuyasha however, was a puppy by all means.” Kagome studied his eyes. Mirth, amusement, and a flicker of sadness? Getting up, she fixed her kimono and stared up at the silhouette of the waning moon hidden behind a few clouds. Closing her eyes, she began to hum. Pressing one hand to her chest, she took a deep breath, and began to sing softly.

Her voice continued to resonate throughout the gardens, wordless sounds leaving her lips to bless the night air. Kagome’s eyes opened slowly, her sapphire orbs sparkling more than usual. “Yes, both of us are mourning.”
Sesshoumaru had no need to ask what she meant.

If everybody expresses what they think,
every heart

I was frightened by the never ending night,
so I prayed to the distant stars.
In endlessly repeating time,
we were searching for love,
because we wanted to become stronger.
We look up to the far away sky.
The two of us, smiling, meet here.
Every heart
has a habit of receiving its dreams.
Sadness has no effect on us,
every heart
gains happiness when it flies
Someday our souls will unite,
we will give peaceful approval
In endlessly repeating time,
we know why we are living.
We go through the nighttime laughing,
both of us are mourning, yet we walk on
Memories of everything has settled,
this is a warm place to be.
The stars separate us from the future.
We are always so brilliant,
so shine

Kagome giggled once again as Sesshoumaru recounted memories of he and Inuyasha growing up; before harsh and cruel reality was introduced to them. She and the Taiyoukai were laying in the soft grass of the gardens, Kagome stretched out in the fluffy, thick fur of his Mokomoko-sama while he lay propped up on one elbow beside her.“You two must have been adorable as pups.” Repeating the term he’d used earlier in a sing-song tone, she smiled. “Like little puppies.” She reached an arm up to catch his ear, but he caught her arm and toyed with the deep blue sleeve that had slid down her arm during its ascent.

A/N: Fluffy enough for you? Everybody must be all like, “Damn, what’s up with this chick? All she does is make Kagome sing.” Well, my dears, you must understand. I am Teishou! Teishou, in Japanese, means sing softly or hum. And yes, it has become an unconscious habit for me. But the songs that I have Kagome sing are very beautiful, and it all looks so very beautiful in my head. Imagine her, singing her heart out in all these situations. Kirei, no? Alright, review, and I’ll get more chapters out! Action and lemons should be coming up soon. And fluff, because I promised fluff!Translations:
