A Deeper Destiny: Chapter 20

Disclaimer: Me? Own Inuyasha? Ha! That’s like saying Miroku has no interest in ass! Oh, and Rumiko Takahashi owns Inuyasha.

Warm, golden rays shone through the doorway of the balcony and tickled the blue crescent moon upon the smooth brow of one mated Taiyoukai. A frown marred his features as the last tendrils of sleep uncoiled from round his brain. He sat up slowly, the silk sheets sliding down his body to pool round his hips. He looked beside himself to where his mate lay. He smiled at the sight of her. She lay on her stomach, her left hand beneath the pillow her head was resting on. Her right hand lay beside her face, fingers curled into the white silk of the pillow. Her petal-soft lips looked so enticing against the stark white, her inky lashes so endearing.

Here, laying beside him, was his mate. The woman he loved. Lady of the Western lands. Soon-to-be mother of his pups. If there were ever a day his soul felt content and at peace, it was this day.

He ran a claw delicately over his mating mark at the juncture of her neck and shoulder. Pride swelled in his chest. His mark, his mate. He smiled as Kagome stirred a bit, but frowned as she moved fretfully in her sleep. Her brow creased, and she clenched the pillow tightly, her body moving restlessly. Beneath her lids, her eyes were
moving rapidly. ‘So, she is dreaming.’ Sesshoumaru moved to wake her, but froze as she cried out, voice full of sadness and pain.

“Inuyasha!”

Kagome stood silently, looking around herself. She stood in a shaft of light, and beyond that, nothing but darkness surrounded her. Turning round, she faced a different direction, and caught sight of another light in the distance. Biting her lip, she stepped forward, only to step back again. She stretched out an arm and watched it disappear into the thick, heavy darkness. She felt an overwhelming urge to go to that other light, but could she leave the safety of the light she was in now? Feeling that tug on her senses again, she steeled herself, then stepped out of the circle of illumination. Waving her hands before her face, she saw nothing. Nothing but shadows, shadows, and more shadows. Lifting her head, she looked towards the other beam of light in the distance. Training her eyes on that one spot, she trudged forward.

Nearing that one patch of brightness amongst the dark shadows that swallowed her, she made out a hill overlooking a river. The water traveled slowly in the river, bubbling softly. A tree sat on the hill, a red-lacquered bridge arching over the stream. As she stepped from the shadows and into the light, she first noticed the soft cushion of grass beneath her bare feet.

Hmm. Were my feet bare?’ Looking down at herself, she realized she was clad in nothing but a knee-length kimono. Fingering the emerald green silk, she made her way to the bridge. Her first intent was to cross the bridge and to go to the tree on the hill, but as she reached the middle of the bridge, she stopped. She knew somehow that she needed to be here. Whatever this urge was, it was calling to her, and it was the strongest here. Resting her arms on the bridge’s railing, she watched the river run its course.

Bare feet with clawed toes paused in mid-step, eyes widening. A clawed hand trembled erratically, before it was stilled; curled into a tight fist. Knuckles went white, the fist began to shake. A name was whispered silently.

Feeling a prickling sensation at the back of her neck, she glanced over her shoulder and froze. Wide sapphire eyes met shocked gold orbs. There, at the foot of the bridge, was none other than the Hanyou himself. Vibrant red fire-rat kimono, subjugation beads round his neck, and fuzzy white triangles perched upon a head of unruly silver hair.

“Inu...Yasha...” Straightening, she moved away from the railing, staring flagrantly at the red-clothed figure. Her feet ached to run to him, but she remained rooted to the spot. “Inuyasha...” As though in a trance, the Hanyou slowly made his way up the bridge, stopping a mere foot from the blue-eyed miko. “Inuyasha.” Reaching out hesitantly, she cupped his cheek in one hand. A burning, stinging sensation in her eyes caused his image to blur into a red and silver blob. As hot moisture spilled down her cheeks, she was pulled into a tight embrace. She marveled at his warmth, took joy in the rhythm of his beating heart. Her fingers clenched round a handful of fire-rat fur as her head was tucked under a chin.

“Kagome.” Face still buried in his chest, Kagome smiled.

“You’ve haunted my dreams for seven years, Inuyasha. Why is it that this time it feels so real?” She laughed, and even to her, it sounded hollow.

“’Cause it is.” Bottom lip trembling unconsciously, she looked up at him, brows furrowed. “You’ve.. finally come. I’m glad.”

“What do you mean?”

“Kagome.” Inuyasha smiled down at her. Closing his eyes, he sighed. “You could have allowed me to visit your dreams five years ago. But... But you weren’t ready to see me. I guess it took you so long because you didn’t know that I’d died.”

“Inu--”

“Shh. I know Sesshoumaru showed you the memory of my death. You know... That I really did love you, right? I know you loved me too.” Kagome nodded, a fresh batch of tears running down her face. “I know you blame yourself for my and Kikyo’s deaths. But it couldn’t be helped. It was our fate, our destiny.”

“But--”

“No buts. I died. There’s no changing that. And I couldn’t be brought back. Sesshoumaru didn’t tell you, but he tried resurrecting me with Tenseiga... But it never worked. I know now that my destiny is not meant to be played out in the land of the living.”

“What are you saying?”

“You’ll understand.. Just not right now. Anyway, we have other things to talk about.” He released the distraught miko and leaned back against the railing. “So you mated the bastard, huh? I suppose it shouldn’t come to a surprise. You two were getting pretty close. You had to get over me anyway.” Kagome looked away, throat constricting. “It’s alright though. At least I know he’ll take care of you. And it’s not like I have any say in it, I’m dead. Besides, you and that asshole are the prophecy. Keh.” He rolled his golden eyes. Kagome frowned, thoughts turning to the scroll that had spoken of the propechy of the Youkai Lord and the Miko from another world. “But.. You love him. And he loves you.” Inuyasha glanced at her over his shoulder. “I’m running out of time here. I just wanted to see you one last time.”

“Last time?” The Hanyou pulled her into a hug.

“I have to go now.” Kissing her forehead, he smiled sadly and let go of her. Turning around, he began to walk back the way he came from. Kagome ran after him, pulling on his haori.

“Where are you going?! Inuyasha! Inuyasha! Please!! Don’t leave me!! Inuyasha! Will I see you again?!” Hugging his waist tight, she sobbed into his hair as he stopped.

“I... I really don’t know. Maybe I will see you again.” His voice grew pitchy. “Kagome, be strong alright?” Kagome only sobbed harder, whispering broken pleas for him to stay. He began to fade, and soon, she was clutching nothing but air. Collapsing onto her knees, she held herself up on her hands, tears coursing down her face and creating tiny pools on the bridge floor. Tossing her head back, she cried out, voice bleeding with her pain.

“INUYASHA!!”

Sesshoumaru blinked, pulling back the hand that had been hovering over her shoulder. Face completely blank, he stood slowly and pulled on a pair of hakama. Not bothering to dress properly, he walked out to the balcony. Summoning his Youkai Sphere, he took off in a flash of light, heading towards the mountains behind his palace. He made a beeline for the waterfall going down the tallest peak, and landed at the base. The icy water roared here, and he waded though the frigid pool to the waterfall itself, standing beneath the cascading water. A good twenty minutes later and still he remained beneath the falls. His blood just as icy as the water, his heart frozen once again, he stepped out from the torrents and looked up at the rising sun. Tossing his head back, he howled; voice colored with pain and grief.

-End Chapter-

A/N: Aww man, I’m real evil. Poor Sesshy... don’t you hate misunderstandings? Anyway, I hope this chapter was okay. I decided to post this chapter a little earlier than planned. I've been in a great mood lately. My Bf is back from his ROTC program, and im officially fourteen again. (for the third time.) I may be a junior now, but I'll be a freshman for life. Okay, I know I've been big on the whole, I promise to respond to every review thing, but I've decided to follow the flow and just put responses to my reviews at the end of each chapter. Is that okay? So that you dont have to check your email for my responses?

half demon cat kagome: I'm glad you share my excitement about our miko and taiyoukai being mated. You can't believe how hard it was for me to actually wait for nineteen chapters before letting them do the deed. Ah, you've noticed Toyoharu and Sanyu. Quite sly arent they? They are catalysts in this story that I weave; my pawns, my messengers, my... hahha, you get the point. And I'm very jealous. I start school on the 2nd, grr. Let's both have great school years. You and I will enter our junior year together this time! Thanks so much love!

Miss Mischief: Whoo! You and me both! Hehehe.. that's why this chapter took so long, I had to find some, ahem, inspiration. Yeah, just wallow in that lemony goodness. ^___^ Mmm, can anyone say lemonfest?? You're first on thie list, my dear!

Nyuka: Yup, yup, yup! That was our very troublesome Mareo at that village. I know you don't like him much, but I have more in store for him. He hasn't run out of usefulness yet! And aww thank you! I've got a question. Are you lemon-shy? It's okay!! Everyone needs a little citrus now and then, some more than others. For example, i like to get a daily serving of citrus, preferable steamy lemon. Mmm.. ;]

Inuyashalover161: Wow! You are amazing my dear! This is your first time reviewing my fic and yet your review is VERY long! To be honest, I blushed! You make me sound so good! Thank you Sheena! I'm glad you like my story, and yes, i hate myself for making Inuyasha die too. But he'll still be a part of this story, I'm just not sure how yet. I hope we'll get to become good friends as well. My email is tsukaidate@yahoo.com and i do have a myspace page just for this, http://www.myspace.com/teishou. *hugs back happily*

Chase65: You are so very right, good things do come to those who wait! Thank you very much for your generous compliments! And I just realized now that I made mistake about the whole 'seven moons' thing. What's supposed to happen is that when Rin returns to the Western Palace, Sanyu will go back with her, to serve under her Lady Kagome. But yes, she will serve as Kagome's midwife. So seven days after the SessKag mating, Rin and Sanyu will arrive home. Sorry for the mistake, and thank you VERY MUCH for bringing that up.
