Chapter 4: The Moonlight

(From Chap 2: Inuyasha turned serious "then stay here, with us. You can continue to visit your family."

Kagome's heart skipped a beat "do you mean that? Do you really want me to stay?"}…

`How can she even doubt that I want her to stay?' Inuyasha wondered as he glanced down at Kagome. "Yes, Kagome" he answered slowly "I would like for you to stay, if you want to".

Kagome couldn't speak, she was so stunned. Inuyasha had admitted he wanted her to stay. Tears continuing to stream down her face, Kagome said very softly "yes, I will stay." Kagome felt Inuyasha's arms tighten around her but he didn't say anything. She looked up at his face but it was hidden behind his silver bangs. Kagome brushed his bangs aside and smiled seeing the happiness in Inuyasha's eyes and on his face.

"Thank you, Kagome." Inuyasha said softly, kissing her forehead.

"For what?" Kagome asked.

"For not giving up on me, for not wanting me to change…" Inuyasha faltered.

Kagome placed a finger to Inuyasha's lips. "You don't have to thank me, you shouldn't feel like you have to change for anyone, for Kikyo, for me, or anyone. You don't. What about Kikyo?"

Inuyasha looked at Kagome. "She's at peace now, as she should have been a long time ago." Kagome nodded. She snuggled closer to Inuyasha with a happy sigh. Inuyasha looked up at the sky, the moonlight seemed to give the forest a magical, glow, the stars twinkling brilliantly. Neither spoke, content to enjoy the moment and the peacefulness.

Meanwhile back at the festival, a certain elderly priestess noticed the absence of four young people. "Humph, it's about time" she mumbled to herself as she headed for bed.

Inuyasha couldn't believe his luck, here with him was a beautiful woman, courageous, intelligent, and she cared about him as much as he did about her. He lightly stroked Kagome's hair and smiled. Kagome stirred "Inuyasha?"

"Hai?" He replied quietly, glancing down at Kagome.

"What's going to happen tomorrow?" the tone of Kagome's voice betrayed a feeling of nervousness. `Tomorrow will we be back to the same old routine? Or will it be different?'

Inuyasha looked confused. "What do you mean?"

Kagome sighed, `I'll have to explain it' she thought. "With us. What we discussed tonight. Will things be different tomorrow like they are right now, or will it be back to the way it was?"

Inuyasha looked at Kagome "Things will be different from now on. I shared a part of me with you tonight that I was scared to show for a long time. It took Kikyo's words to make me realize that I didn't want her, she never accepted me as I was. With you I can be myself and not feel unworthy."

"Inuyasha" Kagome breathed silently. In her heart Kagome knew things had changed between them, but where they would go from here, only time will tell. She reached up and pushed his hair away from his face and smiled. "Thank you, for talking to me and opening up to me, I'm glad."

Inuyasha slowly brought his lips to Kagome's. He stroked her back in soothing motions, as his tongue tasted her lips, seeking entrance. Kagome slowly began exploring Inuyasha's mouth with her tongue. With her free hand she reached up to caress a white ear on Inuyasha's head. Inuyasha growled lightly and began trailing kisses down Kagome's neck. Kagome moaned and smiled, turning her attention to the other ear. He paused to lok at Kagome, lightly panting, eyes closed, bathed in moonlight. `She looks so beautiful' he thought as he watched her slowly open her eyes.

"What's wrong?" Kagome asked.

"Nothing" Inuyasha replied, "just admiring the view." Gently stroking her cheek "you look so beautiful, in the moonlight."

Kagome smiled and blushed "thank you."

All of a sudden a shrill voice disrupted the quiet foret "Kaaggooommee-chan. Where are you?"

Kagome looked at Inuyasha "Shippo. I guess we should get back to the village. Someone already noticed we're gone."

Inuyasha rolled his eyes as the voice came closer "you're right. Let's go." He took Kagome's hand and they started down the path toward Shippo and the village.
