Sometime during the night the trio's positions had changed and Kagome now lay in between the two inu males, both curled up against her sides with their faces buried in her satiny midnight mane. Sesshoumaru awoke late in the night to the sound of painful moaning and whimpering and the heavy scent of tears. When he opened his eyes and propped himself up on his elbow he found his brother already awake and staring worriedly at the girl that lay between them.

Tears were streaming rapidly from beneath Kagome's closed eyes and her face was contorted in a painful scowl. Her head rocked back and forth on her pillow as she cried in her sleep, her sobs soon forming words.

“Mamma…”Kagome sobbed in her sleep.

Inuyasha's hand was stroking her face and forehead as he tried to smooth out the sad lines on her brow. He leant over her sleeping form and braced one hand on the bed on the opposite side of her as he covered her upper body with his and nuzzled his face into her neck. The move was instinctual by nature, a move designed to comfort and calm one's pack member or mate. Though for Kagome it seemed to be doing neither.

After a few moments of nuzzling her neck, Inuyasha pulled back and looked at the crying girl with sad eyes, a low whine pulling from his throat. He moved over her again and this time nuzzled the underside of her chin with the top of his head. This move had no more luck than the one before and if anything, Kagome's crying and whimpering seemed to increase instead of decrease. Another low whine issued from the hanyou as he pulled back and he looked helplessly upon the sleeping and distraught woman.

“Mamma…Souta…grandpa…Buyo…”sh e sobbed each name as though just saying the names alone caused her immeasurable amounts of pain and anguish.

Low whines continued to issue from Inuyasha and he was gently moved aside by his brother who attempted to wake Kagome by shaking her shoulder, though she was too lost in her dreams for the move to have any affect on her. As Inuyasha leaned in to nuzzle her again, she abruptly woke and shot up from the bed more frightened than Inuyasha could ever remember seeing her.

The hanyou's arms wrapped around Kagome when she collided with his chest and he held her securely in his arms as she struggled to free herself of his grip.

“Shh, hush, it's me Kagome,” Inuyasha said softly to her as he nuzzled his face into her neck in an attempt to calm her.

His words seemed to break through the haze of the dream that engulfed her mind and she clung to him tightly as she sobbed into his chest. He tightened his arms around her and stroked her hair as she sobbed her grief as Sesshoumaru looked upon the embracing pair. What had happened to upset the girl so? What could be so bad?

“Kagome,” Inuyasha said when her sobs slowed and quieted to hiccups. “Kagome what happened?” Inuyasha asked stroking her hair and holding her close.

She rubbed her face against his chest as she shook her head. He stroked her hair, his attention undivided as he did his best to comfort the distraught girl in his arms.

“Please tell me,” he begged as he held her.

“I can't,” she sobbed her hands tangled in the folds of his white kimono.

“Why not?”

“I can't.”

“Don't you trust me?” he asked knowing it may be a low blow but needing her to talk to him and willing to do whatever it would take to get her to talk.

“It isn't about trust,” she said her voice slurred with her tears.

“Of course it is. I trust you, don't you trust me?” he asked softly and she shook her head again, he began to think that she wasn't as much shaking her head as she was rubbing her face in his chest.

“I trust you with my life,” her voice was slurred and muffled by his shirt and she sounded so young and vulnerable.

“Than why won't you tell me what happened?”

“If I say it then it'll…”

“Then it'll be what?”

“Real.”

“Miko,” Sesshoumaru said gaining both his brother's and Kagome's attentions, her damp and tear reddened face peeking out from the circle of his brother's arms. “Speak it or not, in the end whatever happened is still and will continue to be real.”

“He's right Kagome,” Inuyasha said as her sad eyes locked with his.

Inuyasha's hands cupped her face in his hands and wiped at her tears with his thumbs, mindful of his razor sharp claws. He pulled her close and kissed her forehead. Kagome's arms wrapped around his neck and she nuzzled her face into the side of his neck much as Inuyasha had done to her earlier.

“What happened?” he asked again, the vibrations of his voice rumbling in his chest against hers.

Kagome sniffled as the memories assaulted her and she told her tale.

Kagome had just stepped out of the well house to see her mother standing in the kitchen fighting off a fire on the stove, whatever she had been cooking had boiled over and was now throwing flames. Kagome laughed and left her backpack on the ground as she drew closer to the house. Her mother looked up for a moment and saw her standing in the grounds and smiled and waved at her. Kagome smiled back and returned the wave - that was when it happened.

None of them knew that the hose for their gas oven had a leak and no one thought to check it before Kagome's mother turned it on moments before the stove fire had occurred. No one was expecting the loud boom or the flash of fire that engulfed her mother. Kagome didn't even hear herself scream as she saw the kitchen windows blow out and heard the boom.

Kagome watched as her mother was swallowed up by the fire, heard her mother's painful cries before her voice was drowned out by the roaring fire. Seconds later her grandfather and brother came into the kitchen to see what had happened. Kagome screamed for them to run but her words fell on deaf ears and soon her entire family was engulfed in the flames.

For hours Kagome stood there and watched as the fire engulfed her house and brought it to the ground in ashes. Everything was gone, her family, her pet, anything that ever meant something to her was gone. It was dark by the time she was able to shake herself out of her stupor and when she did, she began to walk in the ruble of the burnt and still smoldering house as she looked and hoped desperately to find any survivor.

Kagome burned her hands as she turned over a large piece of fallen wall and the sight that greeted her burned itself forever in her mind's eye. There lay her mother, grandfather, and brother burned and charred nearly beyond recognition. Kagome fell to her knees in the ashes and smoldering wood.

She didn't remember getting up from the ashes, didn't remember walking back and gathering her backpack, didn't remember going back through the well. She didn't remember anything for a couple days after that. Her next solid memory was of Sango dragging her out of the river after she had apparently walked in fully clothed.

Inuyasha crushed Kagome to his chest as her sobs began anew. She was shaking so hard in his arms that he was afraid if he didn't hold on to her that she would shatter into a million pieces. Seeing his mother lying in a pool of her blood was hard enough a memory for him, but to watch your entire family burn alive and then to see their charred remains? Inuyasha sighed and held her as close as he could, as tight as he could without hurting or suffocating her.

On the edge of her awareness Kagome felt Sesshoumaru's arms wrap around her from behind, felt him stroke her hair. She was barely aware of much of anything else as the exhaustion from the emotional monsoon took its toll on her and she fell back into an exhausted sleep in their arms.
