InuYasha Fan Fiction ❯ A Mother For Rin ❯ For my pup ( Chapter 19 )
[ Y - Young Adult: Not suitable for readers under 16 ]
Sesshoumaru sat with his back against the wall at Kagome's head. He looked down at the sleeping miko and then down at the tiny girl that rested in his arms. Rin hadn't responded to him once and it worried him like nothing else had. Before nightfall he had taken off his armor and undone his haori, placing Rin inside, tucked against his chest and had retied his haori. He looked down at the small head that peeked out of his white silk haori and bent his head, his lips resting against Rin's hair as hugged her close. He was glad that she was resting against him, her eyes closed as she dreamed whatever it was that children dreamed.
The taiyoukai knew that he wouldn't be gaining any rest or any sleep tonight; he had far too much on his mind to even find the silence of the night to be peaceful. His golden eyes watched as Kagome's chest rose and fell with each breath, the movement slow and steady. Kaede had left that afternoon after revealing the problem, being away from her village for so long had made her nervous, especially with the impending births. She had left telling them that there was nothing more they could do except wait, time was their only opponent now.
Sesshoumaru's thoughts were brought back to Rin as he felt her shift inside his haori as she moved and curled her body closer against his. He watched as her tiny mouth opened and she yawned in her sleep and her tiny hand clutched his under kimono. As her yawn came to an end and her tiny lips smacked together softly a thought hit him, his brows furrowing as he thought. Gathering an apple that had been plucked earlier that day, he broke a piece of it off with his claws and held it in one palm as he used the claws of his other hand to mash up the bit of fruit.
The crushed mass in his hand was sticky and wet, but if he could get Rin to eat it, then it would be worth it. He lightly dragged a finger, wet with the apple's juice, across her lips and watched in anticipation as the tip of her small pink tongue poked out of her mouth and licked at her lips. A light entered his eyes, that was the sign he'd been waiting and hoping for. He dipped his finger into the crushed apple and brought it to her lips, the clawed appendage slipping easily between her lips. He waited to feel what he'd been hoping for and there it was, she began to suck on his finger like a nursing pup would upon a teat and he smiled.
Sesshoumaru dipped his finger twice more into the juice, feeding her off his finger until he was certain that she would eat the small bit of apple without choking on it. It took nearly ten minutes, but she had eaten all of the crushed apple in his hand and seemed to be searching for more. He broke off another chunk of the apple and carefully skinned it with his sharp claws. Bringing the bit of apple to her mouth he held the edge as he dipped the white flesh of the sweet fruit into her mouth.
The taiyoukai smiled softly down at the girl tucked against his chest as he felt her bite off a bit of the apple and watched as her mouth closed around it and she ate the succulent piece of fruit. He held the apple to her lips and fed her until the chunk was gone, smiling softly as she ate.
“Here, try this,” his brother's whisper soft voice said and he looked at the proffered cup of water.
Sesshoumaru took it with a nod of thanks and held it one hand as he dipped his finger in the water and slipped the wet finger into her mouth, waiting for her reaction. Her lips wrapped around his finger as one tiny hand came up to hold his hand as she searched for more of the liquid in her sleep. Slipping his finger from her mouth, he brought the cup to her lips and tipped it until the water was just barely pouring into her mouth. The child in his arms drank until she had her fill and then her tiny hand pushed at his in her sleep.
The taiyoukai smiled and set the cup on the floor next to him and held Rin close in a hug. He heard a soft whine come from his brother and looked at the hanyou as he leant over the slowly wakening Shippou. The fox child blinked his tired green eyes and looked up at Inuyasha in confusion before tears filled his eyes and Inuyasha gathered him up in his arms.
“Hush pup, it's alright,” he said softly as he held Shippou close to him.
“I'm sorry,” the tiny kit said, his voice catching as he tried not to cry. “I saw the deer kick mamma. I just wanted to make her proud,” he quietly sobbed and whimpered as he clutched his head.
“Shippou?” Inuyasha asked as he watched the child in his arms cry softly while clutching at his head.
“It hurts,” Shippou whimpered softly as he buried his head against Inuyasha's chest as his tears came faster.
“I'm not surprised little one,” Tiynoko said softly, having been awakened while Sesshoumaru was feeding Rin. “I saw that hit. That buck slammed you pretty damn hard into that tree. You broke your arm sure, but your head took the worst damage, had you been human you wouldn't have survived the first night.” Shippou looked up at the strange inuyoukai as he listened to him speak. “As it was, you wouldn't have made it had it not been for your mother healing you in her sleep.”
“Mamma?” Shippou said and looked at Kagome.
His eyes widened as he saw her lying still and unconscious on the futon and the pain in his head was forgotten as he leapt out of Inuyasha's arms and moved to her side. He crept slowly up to her face and saw how pale and thin her face was from not healing, nor waking or being able to eat. Tears gathered in his eyes and fell from the green pools as he curled up in the crook of her shoulder, resting his head back on her arm as he looked up into her sleeping face.
“I'm sorry mamma,” he whimpered sadly as his tears fell. “I didn't want you to get hurt; I just wanted to make you proud. I wanted to show you I could take care of you. Please mamma, please wake up. If you want me to go I will, just please wake up. It's all my fault, I'm sorry mamma, I'm sorry,” he sobbed as he buried his face in her shoulder and cried, his tears soaking the light weight haori she was wearing.
Shippou cried for a long time and once his tears were spent he grew still against her, so still in fact that the others thought him to be asleep. Shippou's tiny fist came up to scrub at his eyes and he turned his head slowly to Inuyasha, the thumping and pounding in his head making it feel as though it would explode.
“Make her wake up,” he begged Inuyasha as the hanyou came up behind the kit. “Please Inuyasha, make her wake up.”
“I can't Shippou,” Inuyasha said as he looked on the kit sadly. “I know it hurts to see her like this, but there isn't anything we can do,” he said softly as his hand gently stroked the kit's loose red hair.
Shippou blinked tiredly up at Inuyasha and winced in pain as the throbbing in his head grew more vicious. Inuyasha saw the kit wince and noticed the pain in his eyes as well as the exhaustion. He sighed as he moved closer and then laid down on his side, curling up behind Shippou as he draped an arm over Kagome and Shippou's bodies, kissing the kit on his head.
“Go to sleep pup, who knows, maybe she'll wake up before we do.”
Inuyasha didn't have much faith in his statement, and neither did Shippou really, but the hanyou's attempt at comfort gave him the ok he needed in order to be able to sleep. Inuyasha slid his arm under Kagome's head, lifting her head to lay upon his arm as he too rested his head on his arm and held mother and child close as he slept, Shippou asleep before he was.
Sesshoumaru looked on in silence and was warmed by his brother's fatherly actions toward the kit. Yes what the kit did was careless, but the child also knew the pain of seeing his mother lying injured and unconscious, the mental torment the child would suffer at knowing his part in it all was punishment enough, more than enough for a child. He had heard from Kagome of how he had lost his father and how she and Inuyasha had come upon him. Her kind heart and caring soul always seemed to amaze him and he knew that had she been a miko born and trained in this time, that caring heart may have been stamped out in the teachings of youkai. She was lucky to have been born in another time, and as untrained as she was in her powers, they seemed stronger for it. Perhaps it was her strength of heart, and desperate need to protect those she loved that made her powers that much stronger rather than simply knowing and being trained in the arts. It was her heart, not her mind that led her; perhaps that was what made such a vast difference between her and all other mikos.
Sesshoumaru watched as Tiynoko returned to sleep and then looked to Kagome. He wanted to curl up next to her as his brother did but he couldn't, not with Rin inside his haori and he sure as hell was not going to relinquish his hold on her. He wrapped his arms around the tiny girl tucked inside his clothing and cursed himself for doing this to her. As much as both he and his youkai loved Rin, they had both neglected her when their intended was injured. He didn't understand how he could have let her get to such a state or more to the point how he could have neglected her in the first place. She was his little girl, how could he have done this to her?
He looked into Rin's face when he heard a soft moaning coming from her and saw that her face was scrunched up and her mouth was opening and closing in her sleep. He brought his hand to her face and stroked her pale cheek.
“It is alright Rin,” he whispered to her and was surprised when she turned her face and took one of his fingers into her mouth and began to nibble on it. “Oh, is that it?” he asked in a whisper with a silent chuckle.
Taking another chunk off the apple still sitting next to him, he skinned the piece of fruit and brought it to her lips. The tiny girl in his arms immediately wrapped her lips around the chunk and began to nibble on the fruit in her sleep and the taiyoukai smiled softly at her. This was his Rin, she was returning to him, slowly, but surely. Now his only problem would be getting her to respond while she was awake.

This is a short chapter I know, but it covered what I wanted it to cover. I'll be working on another chapter soon.
