Chapter 19
It had only taken Inu-Yasha possibly 45 minutes to get ready. His shower, though pleasing, had been swift and it had taken no time at all to dry his body and his hair. In reality, it had been his clothes that had taken up all of his time. He just wasn't used to buttons and zippers. He was used to ties and folds! He cursed idly as he glanced down at his “modern” attire. He didn't like the feel of these clothes, sure they had been the most airy he and Kagome could find, but they were just too tight for him. He knew that if they were attacked his reaction reflexes would be cut in half, or his clothes might just rip from his fast movements.
He was currently sitting at the Kitchen table, where Mrs. Higurashi was giving him a crash course in fancy modern dinning etiquette. He mumbled foul curses under his breath as he looked at the two forks in front of him. To him, they were forks, a tool to help him eat faster, but in reality one was a salad fork and the other was a dinner fork. “I still don't see the difference,” Inu-Yasha said, his arms crossed across his chest, his black hat covering his ears. What had Kagome called that hat? A Mob hat or something, it didn't matter to him, a hat was a hat in the modern time and all he knew was that he needed to keep his ears covered.
Mrs. Higurashi sighed and then smiled gently. “I understand. You are used to chopsticks, and to be perfectly honest, I don't think it will matter which fork you will use at the restaurant,” She said warmly, patting a hand that was clenching and unclenching right beside the salad fork.
“Chopsticks would be so much easier,” he said quietly. He rubbed his arms, missing the feel of his fire rat Hitoe and Hakama.
“Don't worry, it's just for tonight,” Mrs. Higurashi said soothingly as she rose from the table. She had run down the basics with Inu-Yasha, to sit like a normal person, not like a dot, to eat slowly, to not get angry at the waiters, etc. She was just leaving the dinning room when she gasped.
Inu-Yasha heard the gasp and was instantly out of his chair, first thing on his mind to protect, second to see whom the hell it was. When he turned to face the stairs he froze mid battle mode. It wasn't a demon that Mrs. Higurashi had gasped about; it had been Kagome, a stunningly beautiful Kagome.
Kagome had taken the hour to get ready at her own pace. Her shower was about 30 minute, and for the rest of the time she had been getting dressed, applying makeup and getting her hair to cooperate. To be honest, she would have rather taken a long shower, but she knew how long it would take to get her entire ensemble together. She twirled in front of her mirror for a moment to make sure the dress fell in all the right places. It was a shimmering emerald green dress that fell to just above her ankles. There was a slit on the left side that came up to about mid thigh. It had spaghetti straps and the chest area was loose and wavy. She had a midnight black stole that wrapped around her neck and fell across her shoulders. She had been worried about wearing green, since Inu-Yasha was wearing red. She didn't want to have a Christmas theme going on. `Then again, we both have a lot of black so hopefully the dark green and dark red won't be thought of as Christmassy
She pawed through her jewelry for a moment; she had a fairly nice selection to choose from after all. In the end she went with the dragon locket she had bought to go along with Ether's. `Well, let's see what Mother and Inu-Yasha thinks,' she thought nervously to herself. She walked silently from her room, her soft black shoes making little to no sound, her thoughts on tonight's events. She was nervous only because this would be the first real time Inu-Yasha would eat in a formal setting.
Her thoughts stopped as her mothers gasp reached her ears and Inu-Yasha rushed in. He froze on the spot and his eyes went wide as he looked over her. She felt a crimson blush creep across her cheeks as his eyes traveled her body. Her hands unconsciously wrapped across her chest and she avoided his eyes as she stood there. `Ok, perhaps the blue dress would have been better,' she thought. She was thinking he was looking at her that way because he didn't like the dress she had picked out.
Before she could turn around and dart back to her room, or descend the stairs, a pair of arms wrapped around her waist and she was pulled into a warm and loving embrace. “Wha?...” she mumbled as she squirmed to look into shining golden orbs. Her blush deepened as his look of desire filled her heart.
“You're beautiful Kagome,” He whispered sweetly into her ear, rocking her gently against him. She truly did look like a vision of beauty. `How could I have ever loved anyone else?' he wondered to himself as he and Kagome descended the stairs.
Kagome and Inu-Yasha were sitting next to each other; Kagome's mother was outside and had told them to stay inside until she called for them. Kagome sighed softly and she began to wonder exactly what her mother had done in the order of transportation. `Maybe a limo,' she thought idly. That was the only type of car she could really think of. `I doubt there really is anything else.'
Inu-Yasha shifted nervously suddenly. Kagome wasn't talking and he was unsure about tonight. Kagome's mother had told him there was a lot to know about modern formal dinner customs. He had never really been to a formal dinner even in his time. He remembered a few meals with his mother, but back then, it had just been the two of them. `What if I do something wrong?' he thought quickly. He didn't want to embarrass Kagome, which would be very bad. He didn't want to look like an idiot in this time, which would be worse. He glanced at her and then looked away. Kagome's mother had tried to explain what a formal dinner was like, and so far he didn't like what was happening. The clothes just didn't have the loose feeling that his hitoe and hakama had, and he honestly didn't think he would remember what rules Kagome's mother had told him. He unconsciously pulled the brim of his hat lower.
Kagome clenched her hands in her lap and glanced at Inu-Yasha. She knew how he felt about being around lots of humans and he would be nervous and worried he would be hated instantly and hurt. She knew that there wouldn't really be a problem like that in her time; most people would think he was wearing a costume if they saw his ears.
“Kagome, Inu-Yasha, your ride is here,” A voice shouted from outside. Kagome was on her feet and felt Inu-Yasha's hand close around hers protectively.
The couple made their way outside and the first thing Kagome saw down in the street made her gasp. To her amazement, her mother had ordered a beautiful horse drawn carriage to take them to the restaurant. The carriage was closed, similar in style to an old European carriage, with ornate gold trimmings decorating the dark red wood. The horses were also amazing. They were both snow white and were so well behaved Kagome wondered if they were real. The driver hopped down and opened the carriage door for Kagome and Inu-Yasha. Inu-Yasha helped Kagome up and then jumped in himself.
The driver shut the door with a soft snap and climbed back up into his seat. He grabbed the reigns and flipped them across the two horses, making the carriage shift gently as the horses started off towards their destination.
Kagome was so excited! She had never ridden in a carriage like this one in fact, besides the horses from the feudal time; she had never even been around horses. She smiled happily and leaned out the carriage window to wave to her mother in thanks.
Inu-Yasha was also surprised and excited. He had never SEEN a carriage like this one, only the few from his time. He looked around, noting the beautiful wine red cushions, the dim lamps, and a small compartment on the floor, under the seat, to where Kagome was sitting. He looked at it questioningly and then shrugged. He smiled as Kagome leaned out the window. He was so tempted to run his hands over Kagome's back while she was distracted, but he didn't. He felt his ears try to twitch under his hat as the sounds of night time Tokyo filtered into the carriage. He could hear people whispering and talking about the ornate carriage making its way through the streets.
“I can't believe my mother would do this,” Kagome said as she leaned back in her seat, opposite from Inu-Yasha. She beamed at him and ran her hands over her silk dress, smoothing out her dress where it had wrinkled.
Inu-Yasha smiled back and, before he or she realized, leaned forward and captured Kagome's lips with his own.
Kagome's arms were wrapped around Inu-Yasha's neck before she even comprehended what had happened. Her eyes closed and she melted into the kiss.
They stayed like that for a minute before Inu-Yasha slowly pulled away from her lips, only a few inches. “Kagome, after the dinner, I need to…to talk to you about something,” he whispered, his body felt hot just at the thought of what he wanted to talk to Kagome about.
Kagome nodded, but before she could say anything, the carriage pulled up to a beautifully landscaped garden. She looked out the window and the door was opened by the driver. “We have arrived. When you are finished, have the restaurant message me and I will return to take you home.” He said as he stepped out of the way for the beautiful girl and her handsome companion. He watched as the two walked down the garden path and towards the sound of softly playing music. He envied those two, not many can get reservations at the Kakure Ro-Tasu. He sighed and jumped up into his seat, flipping his reigns to get his horses moving again. He would wait for those two down the street in a nearby park.
Kagome could feel her breathing pick up as she looked at her surroundings. Everything was just so beautiful! The garden was full of the most gorgeous flowers, the music was soft but warm, and the light was just light enough to allow people to see, but dim enough to add a romantic feeling. She took a deep breath and the scent of delicious foods wafted towards her. How much longer until they arrived at the actual restaurant and not just the outer garden? Just as she wondered that a beautiful entrance came into view. The entrance looked like something from a fairy tale, `or the past,' she thought idly as Inu-Yasha led the way through the door.
“Hello and welcome to the Kakure Ro-Tasu. May I have your names?” A light and friendly female voice said from just to the right of them.
Kagome looked the woman over and then smiled. She was in a beautiful pink summer kimono. “I am Kagome Higurashi and this is Inu-Yasha,” Kagome said with a slight bow, Inu-Yasha did the same.
The waitress smile and nodded, waving her hand towards the inner part of the restaurant, which was hidden by a golden curtain. Kagome glanced at the curtain and nearly jumped in surprise. The curtain had a picture of a great white dog. There were no markings on the dog, but it looked suspiciously like Sesshomaru. Kagome grabbed Inu-Yasha's sleeve and nodded towards the curtain, Inu-Yasha nodded back in understanding.
“Where did you get this curtain?” Inu-Yasha asked as lightly as he could.
The waitress looked at Inu-Yasha in surprise. “One of our founders and most frequent patrons had it made for the restaurant,” she said happily. “Mr. Setso has a great liking of dogs, he is a renown dog breeder,” She said her voice laced with pride. “Now, if you follow me, I will take you to your table,” she said with a respectful bow.
Kagome took one last look at the curtain before following the waitress. Inu-Yasha looked at the curtain and followed frowning slightly. The picture of the dog reminded him of something he had seen, a long, long time ago.
Kagome looked around excitedly as they followed the waitress. After a minute of being lead, she started to wonder where they were going. From the rooms she had been able to look into, there were open tables everywhere. Where was this waitress leading them?
As if reading Kagome's thoughts, the waitress said “Your table is in the private area of the restaurant. Only privileged guests get to go there,” She said with a smile over her shoulder. This made Inu-Yasha frown even more.
Finally, they came to a large door, inscribed on the door was another image of a great dog. “Here we are, your table is just through here,” She said as she pushed the door open silently. Kagome blinked in surprise, none of the other rooms had had doors, maybe sliding rice paper doors, but not a large wooden door.
`Why would our table be in here?' she wondered as she and Inu-Yasha walked in. The minute she stepped over the threshold she gasped. Demonic auras surrounded her, but she didn't feel threatened. If anything, the auras felt friendly and pleasant, not like many of the auras she had felt in Feudal Japan.
Inu-Yasha's hand clenched as the scent of demons became prominent when he stepped into the room. His hand moved as if to grasp Tetsusaiga, which Mrs. Higurashi had forced him to leave at home.
The waitress noticed the changes in her newest guests. “I am assuming Mrs. Higurashi did not mention the Kakure Ro-Tasu also serviced Youkai?” She asked softly and gently.
Kagome shook her head. “No she did not. My mother only told us she had made reservations,” Kagome said calmly. She did not sense any hostile auras here. She took Inu-Yasha's hand and she felt him slowly start to relax as well. Then a really big question hit her, why would her mother tell anyone Inu-Yasha was part Youkai? She would have to ask her mother when they got home.
“I apologize. If I had known you mother would not tell you, I would have told you sooner.” The waitress said with a deep apologetic bow.
“It's ok I guess,” Inu-Yasha muttered as he gripped Kagome's hand. Nothing was attacking them and the few demons he could see seemed to be immersed with their own meals.
The waitress smiled apologetically and led them to a large, secluded booth. “Mrs. Higurashi informed us that you were a demon, so we thought you would be comfortable here. Most demons that come here like to remove disguise charms and reveal what they really are here, in order to be comfortable,” The waitress said as Kagome and Inu-Yasha took their seats. The waitress handed them menus. “When you are ready, just press that button at the end of the table and I will come to take your order,” She said as she headed back towards the large wooden door.
Inu-Yasha looked around, taking in where the exits were, what kind of dangers would be able to reach them and if he would be able to protect Kagome. From what he could see, there were only two exits, the other Youkai here were tranquil, and it seemed they were seated in one of the best protected spots in the room. He relaxed and slowly removed his hat, his ears twitching this way and that.
Kagome giggled softly at had to force herself to keep from rubbing his ears. She busied her hands by lifting up he menu and reading over it. `So many choices,' she thought to herself. After a minute of looking through she glanced up at Inu-Yasha and was surprised to see him looking sullen. “What's wrong Inu-Yasha?” She whispered worriedly.
Inu-Yasha flinched and hung his head over the menu. He mumbled something and then sighed. “I can't read,” he said so softly that Kagome barely heard the words.
`Oh no,' Kagome thought sadly. `Living in the wild, without proper education, he never had the chance to learn how to read,' she set her menu aside and carefully lifted Inu-Yasha's face with her hand against his cheek. “I'll order for us ok? I know what you like,” She winked and was happy to see him cheer up a little. `Memo to self, steal Sota's kid books to give to Inu-Yasha,' she knew Sota still had a few of his kid books that helped kids learn how to read.
Inu-Yasha sighed and leaned back into his seat. It was really soft and comfy. The music and soft scents of flowers floated around him and he felt his whole body relax. He smiled softly and cracked open an eyelid to see what Kagome was doing. She was looking over the menu again. He felt his smile fade slightly. What did she think of him now? She was highly educated and knew more then he could ever hope to know, here he was and he didn't even know how to read. He sighed and shook his head slowly. He had always tried to learn, but no one had ever wanted to teach him. `Even Kikyo had hesitated when I had told her I couldn't read. She never taught me either,' he thought to himself as he watched Kagome flip the menu over.
Kagome grinned and looked up to Inu-Yasha, she frowned, and he looked upset again. “Don't worry about not being able to read Inu-Yasha, I'll help you. Sota has some old books that will be able to help,” she said with a loving smile. She reached across the table to run her hand across his cheek.
Inu-Yasha blushed and grinned. “You mean it Kagome?” he asked softly, but excitedly. To be able to read like Sesshomaru, he would be one step closer to proving himself worthy of his families honor.
Kagome nodded and then glanced down at the menu. “I think I know what you would like. Do you want me to order?” she asked with a warm smile.
Inu-Yasha nodded and reached out to gently grasp her hand. “Thank you Kagome,” He whispered holding her hand to his cheek, “for everything. You've done so much for me these past 4 years.”
Kagome blushed and she just couldn't move for a minute. She didn't know what to say. He had never really thanked her for anything, except for ramen. “I better order,” She murmured hesitantly, her other hand pressing the button the waitress said to press.
Almost instantly the waitress was there, a smile on her face. “What would you like to order?” she asked sweetly, not even bothering with a notepad.
“Well, Green Tea would be nice. Inu-Yasha would like Akami udon, and I would like sa-roinsute-ki,” Kagome said as she looked at the menu to make sure she was ordering the right things.
The waitress nodded and bowed, “I will be right back with your orders,” She said as she turned to go.
Kagome watched her go and then looked at Inu-Yasha, who had a hungry expression.
“Akami Udon sounds really good right now,” he said, nearly drooling.
Kagome giggled and placed her hands in her lap. “I thought you might like that. I told you I know what you like.”
Inu-Yasha nodded, barely containing himself now that he knew what his dinner was going to be.
After 3 courses of food Kagome and Inu-Yasha were happily stuffed. Inu-Yasha reclined where he sat in the booth and rubbed his stomach. They had eaten salad, his had chunks of chicken, the main dish, his noodles, and then a large fudge cake with vanilla ice-cream, which was a lot better then watermelons.
Kagome giggled and suddenly yawned. That much food made her sleepy.
“Excuse me Miss. Higurashi and Mr. Yasha, there is someone here that wishes to see you,” the waitress said with a bow.
Kagome stopped giggling and looked at Inu-Yasha in curiosity. Inu-Yasha looked at Kagome in curiosity as well. “Alright I guess,” Kagome said, Inu-Yasha feh'd.
The waitress nodded and bowed again, stepping out of the way.
Both Kagome and Inu-Yasha gasped, Inu-Yasha again reaching for his Tetsusaiga that wasn't there.
“I would take it you are surprised to see me then?” The Lord of the Western Lands said with a curious smile.

Not as long as the last chapter, but I think I had fun with this one. Hehehe…cliffies are fun.
Anyway, time for words:
Udon: Japanese noodles
Akami: Lean meat
sa-roinsute-ki: sirloin steak
Ok, well I have my 15 reviews, now I would like to ask for maybe 17. You know, when I was first writing this it was at 10 font size and I didn't realize it. While I was writing I was getting really worried about how big it was and if I would have to add to what I wanted to put in this chapter. Then I realized what size the font was at and I was like. “Oh wow…that's like…small” and I put it back onto 12 font size. Low and behold, it got two pages longer.
