Chapter 20

 

“I would take it you are surprised to see me then?” The Lord of the Western Lands said with a curious smile.

“Sesshomaru? What are you doing here?” Kagome asked in a shocked voice. How was Lord Sesshomaru able to make it through the well to her time? And was he wearing an Armani suit!?

Sesshomaru chuckled, which made Inu-Yasha scowl. “Your not Sesshomaru, Sesshomaru is a cold bastard,” he said softly.

Sesshomaru shook his head and put his hands in the pockets of the very fancy business suit. “Actually I am Sesshomaru, given a much older Sesshomaru you do not know very well,” his eyes sparkled with mirth.

Kagome frowned and then shook her head. “I don't understand,” she said as she scooted over to make room for Inu-Yasha's older half brother.

Sesshomaru sighed and took the offered seat. “I figured you wouldn't. Miko, do you really think I will die in the past?” He asked cryptically. He couldn't say too much in order to keep the past the way it was, and to keep what would happen actually happen.

Realization dawned on Kagome, and for Inu-Yasha's sake, and said what she realized out loud. “You're the modern Sesshomaru?”

Inu-Yasha looked at his half brother in surprise.
“That I am Miko. It was I who suggested to your mother you and Inu-Yasha have dinner here,” he said with a slight smile. “I only stopped by to say hello.”

Inu-Yasha snorted. “You never just stop by to say hello. There has to be something to your visit.” Inu-Yasha said thinking of all the times Sesshomaru had interrupted his life.

Sesshomaru sighed irritatedly. “I am not like my past self little brother. I really did just stop by to say hello,” he sighed and then continued. “And to give you a warning…of sorts,” he said, his fingers laced beneath his chin.

Kagome hesitated and looked at Inu-Yasha and then back to Sesshomaru. “What is the warning?” she asked softly after a minute of thinking.

“The warning is this: choose wisely. There will come a time where you must make a very important choice for your own good, and your sister's,” He said as he got up to go. “I am afraid I can't tell you any more then that Miko,” he turned to Inu-Yasha. “Take care little brother.” With that Sesshomaru turned and left before Inu-Yasha or Kagome could ask for any more details.

Inu-Yasha nearly jumped from his seat to go and demand what Sesshomaru meant, but was halted by Kagome's hand. “Inu-Yasha…wait…” she murmured.

Inu-Yasha growled softly. “Why? That bastard makes no sense! I'm going to go shake some sense out of him,” Inu-Yasha threatened, his hands clenching and unclenching into fists.

Kagome sighed and gently pulled Inu-Yasha back into his seat. “I don't quite understand what Sesshomaru is saying either, but I do understand why he didn't tell us much. If he did, he could change the past and that would change the future…my home Inu-Yasha.”

Inu-Yasha took a deep breath to calm his anger and then leaned against Kagome. “Alright, so what do we do now?” he asked softly.

“We go back to my house for right now, and we talk like you wanted,” Kagome said, wrapping her arms around Inu-Yasha.

Inu-Yasha stiffened. He had almost forgotten about what he wanted to talk to Kagome about. “Alright, let's go then,” He murmured. He stood and helped Kagome from her seat.

 

Kagome and Inu-Yasha waited in the garden as their carriage was summoned. He tilted his hat to make sure it was on right and sighed. He could hear the carriage coming closer and he wanted, no needed to tell Kagome what was bothering him. “Kagome…we've known each other for 4 years now,” he whispered as Kagome leaned against him for warmth.

“I know Inu-Yasha. I was 15 when I fell through the well,” she giggled and fingered the rosary that was still around his neck. She frowned inwardly; she should really remove it now. She knew she really didn't need to use it anymore, except when Inu-Yasha lost control of his demon half.

“I've…I've grown really attached to you Kagome,” Inu-Yasha said softly, blushing as Kagome's small, delicate fingers ran across the rosary beads around his neck.

Kagome blushed deeply. “I've grown really attached to you to Inu-Yasha,” she murmured lovingly.

Inu-Yasha hesitated and was almost going to forget what he was about to ask her, but plunged in headfirst. “I'm nearly 100 years old Kagome, my instinct and my demon have been telling me to…to take a mate,” he whispered, his own cheeks burning from embarrassment. But then again what was embarrassing? It was demon instinct to want a mate in later years.

Kagome blushed and her hand hesitated on one of the fangs on Inu-Yasha's rosary. She didn't say anything, too surprised.

“Kagome…I…I want you to be my mate,” His head was tilted down and his eyes were covered by his bangs. His ears were pressed flat against his head in fear that she would reject him. He had admitted his love for her before, but not the fact he wanted her for his mate.

Kagome opened her mouth several times to say something, but each time she snapped her mouth shut. She didn't know what to say. She couldn't refuse, but was she ready to mate with Inu-Yasha. “Inu-Yasha, I…I don't know what to…to say,” she whispered, her voice breaking slightly.

Inu-Yasha shivered from what he heard. He quickly wrapped his arms around her, pulling her tight against his chest. “Please Kagome, say yes! I've never loved anyone else like I love you, you mean more to me then anyone else ever has. Please,” his started begging, his forehead resting against Kagome's, his eyes meeting hers. “Please say yes,” he whimpered softly as her eyes filled with tears.

Kagome heard the whimper and threw her arms around his neck. “How can I say no Inu-Yasha? This is what I want,” She stood on her toes and kissed him gently, but lovingly.

Inu-Yasha's ears perked up and his eyes went wide as Kagome, his Kagome, started kissing him. His eyes momentarily closed and he returned the kiss with as much love as she was giving him.

They resentfully pulled apart as the sound of the carriage stopped and the door opening. Kagome sighed and laid her head on Inu-Yasha's chest for a moment, thinking that maybe this was all just a wonderful dream.

“We'd better go,” he whispered gently, his hand smoothing down Kagome's hair.

Kagome nodded slightly and turned to go to the carriage, her hand clasped around Inu-Yasha's. She smiled serenely as she took her seat in the carriage.

Inu-Yasha followed closely and took his seat by Kagome. He leaned over to nuzzle her neck as the door was closed. “There's something else,” he murmured as Kagome leaned into his embrace.

Here it was, she was going to wake up from her dream now. “What is it Inu-Yasha?” she asked softly, her eyes closed in a relaxed state.

Inu-Yasha sighed. “I asked you to be my mate now Kagome, is because tomorrow is the start of the mating season,” He whispered as he held Kagome tightly.

Kagome stiffened slightly, but then quickly relaxed. “Why are you telling me this?” she asked softly.

“Because I want you Kagome, I want you more then anything else in this world,” He told her, his voice deepening in his chest.

Kagome blushed and then looked up into his face slowly. “How often is mating season?” She asked hesitantly.

“Once a year. This is the only time females have a higher chance of becoming pregnant. Female youkia don't always get pregnant during mating season,” he told her. “I have heard of a few females that became pregnant a couple months before mating season, but that occurrence is very rare.”

Kagome nodded and then frowned. “I don't want to become pregnant right now Inu-Yasha, at least not until Naraku has been defeated.”

Inu-Yasha nodded and sighed sadly. He knew it would be a bad idea to have pups before the jewel was completed and the threat of Naraku gone. His demon on the other hand wanted pups. “I understand Kagome. You're not a youkai, and you won't become pregnant for at least another month.”

Kagome frowned. “What do you mean I won't become pregnant for another month?”

Inu-Yasha shifted nervously. “You just finished your…monthly heat,” he said, his face burning crimson from embarrassment.

It took Kagome a moment to figure out what Inu-Yasha meant. Then it hit her, he meant her period! “Oh! Um, well…yeah I guess I did,” She should have known he would have smelled her blood during her periods.

“Mating season will only last 3 months. I have better control over my instincts then most youkai because I'm part human, but during each of your heats I might loose control,” he wanted to tell her this now instead of when a mistake was made.

Kagome nodded slowly, she could possibly talk to her mother about birth control. She blushed at the thought, she knew her mother must have figured something might happen but it didn't make talking to her mother about it any easier. “I think I have a solution for not getting pregnant,” she whispered hesitantly as the carriage continued on.

Inu-Yasha kissed the top of her head. “We don't need to worry about it for now, but perhaps tomorrow morning we can talk to your family.”

Kagome nodded and cuddled against him, this had probably been one of the most romantic days of her life.

 

Morning came and Kagome swung her hand around as she reached to shut off that damned alarm clock. `Where is that button,' her mind thought blearily as she finally found the disturbance and slapped the snooze button. She moaned and snuggled back into her blankets against the nice warm presence against her back. She sighed glanced over her shoulder at the silver haired hanyo that had stolen her heart. She sighed and turned over onto her side so she could bury her face into his chest. She giggled at the memory of last night.

 

*Flash Back*

 

Before Kagome could reach for the door when the carriage stopped, Inu-Yasha scooped her up and swiftly jumped up the shrine steps. Kagome shouted a thank you over his shoulder with a giggle. She could tell he was extremely happy with what they had been talking about, and she couldn't blame him. They had decided that tomorrow, after they spoke with Kagome's mother about “birth control” they would go back to Inu-Yasha's time to avoid any…embarrassments that might have occurred in her own time.

Kagome sighed as she was set down onto her feet at the front door. She hesitated and then gently pushed the door open. Nobody was awake at this time of night, so Kagome and Inu-Yasha made their as silently as they could through the house and to Kagome's bed room. Again Kagome hesitated, not sure on what to do next. Did Inu-Yasha want to…to mate now? Before she could even ask or think to ask Inu-Yasha picked her up and deposited her onto her bed.

“You should sleep,” He said with a wicked grin. “You'll need all the rest you can get for tomorrow,” he added with a gentle voice.

Kagome blushed and then stood back up and walked to her dresser. “Um…let me get changed ok?” she said glancing at him, her cheeks flaming with embarrassment. When Inu-Yasha did not take the hint, she huffed softly. “Could you turn around please?”

Inu-Yasha watched her for a moment and then turned with a sigh. For a girl that new she would have a mate tomorrow, she was still pretty shy about how she looked. Besides, he already knew what she looked like. He smirked slightly from all the memories he had collected when he had chased after Miroku when the houshi had gone off to spy on Kagome and Sango.

Kagome quickly pulled out a pair of pajamas and pulled off the dress and accessories. She set them carefully onto her dresser and tugged on the pajamas. “Do you want to get changed Inu-Yasha?” She asked as she turned around, blushing as a nearly nude Inu-Yasha was sitting on her bed. He was wearing boxers, red silk ones, but his entire outfit had been thrown rather unceremoniously to the far corner of her room.
Kagome flushed and slowly made her way to the bed.

“Just relax Kagome, we're not going to do anything tonight,” He whispered, his cheeks tinting pink slightly as he whispered those words to her. As she lay down, he wrapped an arm around her and pulled her back flush against his chest.

After about fifteen minutes, the two fell asleep in that very position.

 

*End Flash Back*

 

Kagome giggled again as she came back to the present time. `Best go take a shower before breakfast,' she thought slowly to herself. If she knew Inu-Yasha, and she did, then he would want to talk to her mother as soon as possible so they could get back to Feudal Japan.

“Oy, wench, what are you giggling about?” Inu-Yasha asked gruffly, his eyes shut rather leisurely. Oh did he have plans for tonight!

Kagome grinned and shyly kissed his cheek. “Morning to you too Inu-Yasha,” she said pleasantly as she pulled away from him and quickly darted for the door.

Inu-Yasha grinned and sat up on the bed. He knew what she wanted and he would let her have it for now. When her bedroom door closed behind her, his slight smile turned into a sad frown. Unbeknownst to many people, Inu-Yasha really did have a mind and he used it frequently. He sighed as once again thoughts and plans invaded his present mind.

He had been thinking long and hard about Kagome and their future relationship. He had been thinking about her happiness and her safety. He knew what would make her happy, to be with her friends from his time, but he knew she really wanted to finish school and live in her time. He knew, even though she sometimes denied it, that she wouldn't be able to live in the feudal time after the jewel was purified. She wouldn't be able to put up with it. She was a modern girl used to modern conveniences. She wouldn't be happy in any other time other then her own. He rubbed his head gently. He did like it here, and he wouldn't mind living here. He could easily get used to the dreaded scents and, if those stupid dragons helped him, maybe he could get a disguise charm like Ether's. `That way I won't have to wear those stupid hats,' he thought vaguely to himself.

In his mind he laid out what could and couldn't happen. In one part of their mind they defeated Naraku and Kagome chose to stay in the past. He knew she would put up a brave front for him, and pretend everything was perfect, but she would miss her family and time too much. The other option was that the two of them stay in her time. He rubbed his head again; he would have to have Kagome decide. He could adjust to this time, heck at least he wasn't being hunted and hated in this time! But the question was, could Kagome really adjust to living full time in his world?

During his thinking rampage he had swiftly dressed in his traditional attire. That was another thing that he would have to adjust too, not wearing his fire rat hitoe and hakama all the time. `Well, maybe when we're not doing anything important,' he added in an after thought.

Kagome walked through the door just as this last thought ended and huffed slightly, standing out of the way of the door. Inu-Yasha grinned and walked by, barely making a motion with his hand that slit the towel in half and made the pieces fall to the floor. Before he could hear a shrieking sit, he dashed from the hall and towards the kitchen, a huge grin covering his features.

 

Kagome fumed angrily for a moment as she slammed her bedroom door shut. He had ruined her towel on purpose! She sighed after a moment and tossed the two pieces of the towel off to the side as she pulled out a variety of clothes to wear. She frowned as she fingered her old school uniform. She now had a high school uniform and the skirt was just a tad longer then the junior high uniform. She set the uniform aside and chose some every day wear to take with her. She picked out an outfit that suited her and pulled it on, noticing for once how the top was just a tad snug. `How long have I had this shirt?' she thought idly to herself as she packed the rest of the outfits, minus the school uniform, into her old yellow bag. She had patched that thing up so often she wondered how it could still be as useful as it was.

Grinning and excited for the day to come, she shouldered the slightly empty bag and then dashed from her room. She still had some supplies to pack from the kitchen.

 

It took very little time to eat breakfast and to pack the rest of her supplies. She hummed softly as she ticked off her mental list as she packed away food supplies, repacked the first aid pack, and double checked to make sure everything was there. During this time Inu-Yasha had already spoken with her mother about a couple things, little did Kagome know.

 

“Will it work though?” Inu-Yasha asked softly as he glanced shyly at Mrs. Higurashi. He had already asked for her permission to mate Kagome, much to Mrs. Higurashi's surprise. Now he was asking her about this `birth control' that Kagome had mentioned the night before.

“I don't see why it wouldn't. I could call up a few of the demon contacts the orphanage gave me the other day…” Mrs. Higurashi murmured as she started thinking deeply.

Inu-Yasha looked at Mrs. Higurashi funny. “Demon contacts?” he whispered.

Mrs. Higurashi snapped from her thoughts for a second. “Yes. Even though not many people know about demons, it seems the government does. Since the orphanage was government run, it knows exactly what Ether is and they gave me a list of demon contacts to use in case of emergencies. There is a youkia doctor on the list as well. I could call him up and ask him about what kind of birth control Kagome would have to use,” she said with a sweet, motherly smile. “I've already spoken with a few and I've found out a lot about the youkia community here in Japan as well as around the world.”

Inu-Yasha nodded and looked up quickly as Kagome walked in.

“Momma, I have something to ask you…” Kagome started to say shyly and nervously.

Mrs. Higurashi waved her hand to one side. “Don't even mention it Kagome. Inu-Yasha and I have already discussed it and I will look into birth control for you right away.”

Kagome blushed and sent a slightly angry glare over towards a cowering hanyo.

Mrs. Higurashi laughed and stood to give her daughter a large bear hug. “Sweet heart, to be honest I was getting worried you and Inu-Yasha were never going to get together. I'm so happy for you dear, and I will do everything in my power to help you. Haven't I been doing just that for the past 4 years?” she asked with the largest smile possible.

Kagome returned the smile and nodded. “Yes you have momma. I don't think I could ever repay you,” Kagome said while giving her mother a bear hug in return.

As mother and daughter exchanged hugs and words, Inu-Yasha started to squirm. He could already start to feel the pull of mating season on his body and youkia. Now that he knew Kagome wanted to be his mate he wouldn't have to push her away now like he had been doing for the past 4 years. For the past 4 years mating season had been getting harder and harder to ignore.

“You two better get going sweet heart. I think Inu-Yasha is anxious to be off.” Mrs. Higurashi said as she pushed her daughter gently towards the door.

Kagome took the hint and started off. She opened the door and hesitated for one last second before opening it and walking out. She didn't even have to look to know Inu-Yasha was right behind her. She could feel the heat of his stare as they walked silently towards the well. When they came to the door of the well Kagome eeped as strong arms lifted her up. Before she could say or do anything the two of them were falling down the well and blue light had surrounded them. Privately Kagome thought the well understood Inu-Yasha's urgency and she could have sworn the trip to the past was much shorter then usual. They came out of the well before any other thought crossed Kagome's mind.

It was several minutes later that Kagome noticed that Inu-Yasha was not taking her towards the village. “Where are we going Inu-Yasha?” She asked as she snuggled into Inu-Yasha's chest to keep her face warm.

Inu-Yasha didn't take his eyes off the path as he ran and jumped from place to place. “There is a cave I used to live in 50 years ago. I also used to go there when you returned home or when I needed some time alone. It's not much farther,” He said as he stole a look at the beauty in his arms. Her cheeks were flushed slightly from the cold wind that he created from running. He grinned as he looked ahead of them. Not much longer now, soon Kagome would be his.

Alright, next chapter Kagome and Inu-Yasha mate…I swear…Then we'll go back to Sesshomaru and Ether. Then maybe we'll take a quick look at Sarah and Richard, but that will only happen if people ask really nicely. d
