A Past Revealed Ch. 3

Nine years have now passed since InuToshiro has started looking after Inuyasha.

------------------------

'Dammit,' thought Shiro as he ran through the woods in pursuit of wolves that were chasing a frantic half demon. Inuyasha had been out in the forest and didn't realize that he had stumbled into a whole bunch of wolves.

Shiro had heard the little hanyou yell and soon was in the woods with his concealment ring off, so even if someone saw him they would not know who he was. Once he caught up with the wolves and was parallel to them, he began to take out the slowest ones. Before long there was only one wolf left and it was right behind Inuyasha.

The wolf never even saw the demon come from the side and rip its throat out. After Shiro had finished off all of the wolves he quickly found a stream and rinsed the blood off of him. He could tell Inuyasha had picked up his scent and was trying to track him. But, he was still just a pup and could be confused easily. Shiro rolled around on the ground in one spot and then leaped into the air and grabbed the highest branch he could get ahold of.

He tried to hold in his laughter as he saw the young hanyou approach and start to look around wondering were his savior was. Not long after, Inuyasha soon gave up the search and made his way back to the village. Shiro watched over him all the way, jumping from tree top to tree top. When Inuyasha was safely back in the city, Shiro jumped to the ground and put his ring back on, resuming the identity of Kainen. He was able to watch over Inuyasha in the village as he made his way back to his mother.

The people in this village had not taken a liking to the poor inu hanyou. He was mistreated and badly spoken of, though not around the Kainen. Nearly everyone knew that he looked out for the little hanyou when he was around him. Inuyasha always liked to hang around at the smith's shop.

Yeah, the smithy belonged to Shiro now. Aiono had died of sickness over seven years ago. Shiro had not liked loosing the poor man, but he didn't mind taking over the smithy. Shiro had made a name for himself as Kainen, as one of the finest sword smith's around. Kainen even made swords for demons when he was commissioned to. No one knew why Kainen was always accepting of youkai or hanyou, not many humans got along with them. When asked, Kainen would just smile and say that everyone deserved to have a decent weapon.

Inuyasha woke up one day to find his mother gone, she was nowhere to be seen. He got dressed and began to sniff around in order to find her. Once InuYasha found her at the table, he joined her for breakfast. He loved being with his mother - she was always kind and gentle, not to mention her scent calmed him and made him feel safe.

All through breakfast Inuyasha couldn't forget the event of what happened to the wolves that were chasing him that day. One moment, he had a full pack after him. The next, he was running with nothing behind him. He had picked up a strange scent and had tracked it to a stream and then it had disappeared. Inuyasha had given up looking for the origin of the scent and returned to the village.

Izayoi realized that Inuyasha was not paying any attention to her when she spoke his name and put a hand on his shoulder. When he jumped she had asked him if he was ok. When he nodded she smiled and told him to go play or go and see Kainen.

Izayoi liked Kainen, he was one of the few people that didn't despise Inuyasha for what he was. She also knew that he defended her and her son in arguments, she had listened one day when no one knew she was there. It was one of the only reasons that she allowed Inuyasha go to the smithy and be with the smith.

"Thanks mom, I am going to go see Kainen." Inuyasha said excitedly, he hopped down out of his chair, gave his mother a hug, and was out of the Manor gates in a flash.

He got to the smithy just in time to see Kainen finish talking to a demon. The demon looked at Inuyasha and said something in a language Inuyasha wasn't familiar with. When Kainen smiled Inuyasha figured it couldn't be too bad. Inuyasha went over to talk to Kainen when the demon had left.

"Kainen, what did that demon say?" Inuyasha queried.

"Oh, she was just saying how cute your ears were." Shiro said smiling.

"I hate them, everyone always wants to pull and touch them." Inuyasha said with an irritated tone.

"Now, now, Inuyasha. They aren't that bad are they? How many times have they helped you in the past?" Shiro asked.

Inuyasha just shrugged as he thought. That was something about Kainen that he always liked, the man knew what to say to make him happy and feel better about himself. Inuyasha just play growled at Kainen when he put his hand on the boys silver hair and ruffled his hair around. He knew Kainen thought it was great to mess his hair up, but Inuyasha didn't mind too much.

"Kainen, when are you going to make me a sword?" Inuyasha asked as he saw Kainen get the metal he needed to make his new order.

"Whenever your mother says you can have one." Shiro again smiled as he said this.

Inuyasha pouted, he knew his mother would never let him have a weapon. He did just fine with his claws and fangs, but he really wanted a powerful sword.

Inuyasha hung around at the smithy until lunch. When his stomach growled he said that he needed to get back to his mother. After he said goodbye to Kainen, he began to make his way back to the manor. Inuyasha got about half way back when he was grabbed from behind and was knocked out by the hilt of a sword.

Shiro had heard the distinct yip of the inu hanyou and grabbed his sword to go and see what had happened to the pup. He spotted a crowd of men and sneaked up behind them. What he saw enraged him.

Inuyasha had been knocked unconscious and was put into the middle of a circle of men were they proceeded to hit and kick him. By the time Shiro made it to the inside of the circle Inuyasha was already bloodied, badly bruised, and probably had a few broken bones. Once he made it to the circle he drew his katana and told all the men to leave the hanyou alone, and that he would strike down anyone who might cause harm to him.

Once everyone had backed off Shiro took Inuyasha in his arms back to the smithy. It had a hut connected to it that Kainen used as a second house in case he needed it, though he still mainly used his hut outside the village to live in. Shiro laid Inuyasha down on a futon and began cleaning his wounds and bandaging him up. When he was about halfway down with the bandaging, Inuyasha chose that moment to regain consciousness.

Inuyasha awoke to extreme pain. He hurt everywhere, when he began to try and move he felt a hand push him down and a pain erupted over his chest as something was put across it. Reacting out of fear, Inuyasha swiped his claws and gutted whatever it was that was hanging over him. When he opened his eyes he was frightened even more. He had just gutted Kainen, he could see the man's wide eyes back away with his hands over his stomach and then collapse to the floor. Inuyasha realized that the man was just trying to bandage him. He jumped from the futon and quickly dashed out the door and ran into the forest.

Shiro realized what had happened and cursed himself for not thinking. He should have been faster to protect himself but due to his lack of self concern he had let himself be gutted, by a pup no less. It hurt, but then Shiro remembered that Inuyasha could only see the human form of Kainen. So Shiro acted as a human would if he had just been gutted.

When Shiro decided that he could stop acting he rose up and started to clean and bandage his own wounds. Once he was finished, he grabbed a clean dark blue kimono and slipped it on. If he kept it on no one would notice the bandages. With that he went outside and began to close down the smithy, he would be out of commission for a day or two.

Inuyasha had returned to the Manor that night with his eyes puffy and bloodshot. His mother came up to him and quickly took him to the healer were he was re-bandaged and given something to drink to calm him down. Inuyasha just let his mother think that he was just hurting because of his wounds. He never told her what had happened to Kainen.

It had been a week since the incident and Inuyasha got up the courage to go and see how Kainen was. He believed he was still alive because no one had said anything about his death. When Inuyasha arrived he peeked steadily around the corner of the smithy and saw Kainen working on a beautiful blade.

He stepped into the smithy and ran over to Kainen, and was surprised when the man ruffled his hair and greeted him as always. However, he must have noticed Inuyasha's worried glance.

"Inuyasha, about what happened a week ago. Did you tell anyone what you did?" Shiro asked, his tone serious.

When Inuyasha shook his head, he saw Kainen let out a sigh of relief and smile at him.

"That's okay Inuyasha. It was an accident, I will heal soon. How about we just pretend that never happened, Ok?"

Inuyasha again nodded and this time it was his turn to breath a sigh of relief. If anyone in the village knew what he had done, he would be hated even more.

"Alright, Pup. How about I show you how to craft a beautiful sword?" Shiro asked knowing it would make Inuyasha feel better.

He then cursed himself when he realized his slip of the tongue, he shouldn't have said pup. That's not what humans called their young. But, hopefully Inuyasha wouldn't catch that.

He was wrong however. Inuyasha had caught it and was about to ask why we called him that when he got distracted by the blade that Kainen was showing him. Inuyasha spent the whole afternoon with Kainen showing him how to properly craft a magnificent blade.

That night when Shiro was in his hut he couldn't stop thinking about what a wonderful day it had been with Inuyasha. He loved the pup, it was like he was the son that Shiro never had. Shiro had decided to talk to Inuyasha's mother and see if the pup could spend more time at the smithy and learn about smithing. With that idea in his head, he went into a deep and peaceful sleep that he had been unable to achieve since his mate had died.
