“Are you sure that this is what you want, Kagome?”
The monk let the question hang in the air. He knew that something
like this was bound to happen since the arrival of the dead miko,
but now that the time had come, he suddenly had the urge to beg her
to stay. Did the little miko realize how important she was to
them?
“Yes, I have to. It's the only way.” She gave him a sad
smile.
“Al…alright. If you're sure that this is what needs to
be done.”
Kagome nodded. “It's the only way.”
He recalled their earlier conversation, where she begged him for
his assistance. She explained that Kikyou no longer wanted
Inuyashas soul, but to fulfill their dreams of 50 years ago.
“But… but Kagome, shes dead! How can she simply
think she can pick up where they left off and ask to be his wife!
Shes not even flesh and blood!”
“Ah, Sango, there are more ways to please a man than the
traditional way. Have you ever thought about-“
“SHUT YOUR MOUTH YOU PREVERTED MONK!”
“Ah, yes, the mouth was exactly the body part I was
referring to!”
He felt her boomerang become reacquainted with his head. He had
done this on purpose. His poor slayer was overflowing with emotion
and anger, and she had no outlet. If he could direct it at himself,
it would be worth it to take the resulting lumps.
“Have you ever considered that it is fate that you're here
Kagome? I mean, you fell into a fell from the future, with the
Shikon jewel inside of you. I think you were destined to meet
Inuyasha!”
Kagome smiled.
“I used to think that as well. And in a way I still do.
But what if I was brought here, not to be with Inuyasha, but so
that part of my soul could be given back to Kikyou? She couldn't be
fully recalled into the clay body because her soul had already been
reincarnated. What if I had to come back to give that piece back to
her, so that way they could live the life they
deserved?”
It was clear that they couldn't convince her otherwise. They simply
exchanged looks and pitied both Kagome and themselves.
Miroku gripped his staff, making the bells jingle. He suddenly felt
as if he had to steady himself. Not only was the dog demon going to
be in an uproar once he figured out what happened, he was going to
lose someone he loved. Kagome moved to him and wrapped her arms
around the monk. He didn't even run his hands along her bottom. He
just wanted to hold her close.
She turned to Sango and wiped the tears from her eyes. She
immediately put herself in the slayers arms.
“I can't believe your leaving us Kagome… I swear I'm
going to kill Inuyasha for this!” She clenched her teeth in
anger.
“No, please don't take this out on him. I… I want him
to be happy.” She bit her lip and saw that that her friends
temper had not subsided. “I know that me leaving is hard. I'm
going to miss you all like crazy. There isn't going to be one day
that passes that I'm not thinking about you, and worrying about
you, and missing you… but Inuyasha needs you too. He has been
alone for so long, and he finally has people in his life that enjoy
being with him, for him. He's going to need you to be there
for him. So, please, for me, stick by him. Don't take this out on
him. I'm the one choosing to go, its not his fault.”
Sango shook her head at the woman before her. Even though she was
in pain, and making the hardest decision of her life, the miko was
still the most selfless person she knew.
Kagome reached behind her neck and unfastened the clasp of her
necklace. She placed the jewel shards in Sangos hands.
“Your going to defeat Naraku! I may not be there to see it,
but I know it in my gut.” She gave the slayer one last
hug.
She kneeled down to the fox. This was the farewell she had been
dreading. She had explained to the kit why she had to go, and tried
to reassure him that he would be okay, that Sango would hold him at
night, that he would be on her mind daily. He didn't want to hear
any of it.
He was mad.
She picked him up despite his struggle and held him close. “I
love you Shippo.”
“If you loved me, you wouldn't be leaving Kagome!” With
that, the kit took off, leaving the miko with tears streaming down
her face.
“Don't worry Kagome. We will talk to him. He will understand
someday.” Sango said, taking her hand in Kagomes.
“I guess we better go to the hut then.”
The trio walked in silence with heavy, sad footsteps.
~.~
Inuyasha was sitting inside the hut, arms stuffed into his sleeves,
watching Kaede sort herbs.
“So Inuyasha, ye have let my sister join your group. Did ye
not predict any problem with this arrangement?”
“Feh! What was I supposed to do old woman?”
“Ye know that my sister is not the same woman from 50 years
ago. Perhaps it is best to consider why she has asked to join ye
now?”
“All I know is she said that to defeat Naraku we have to band
together. That makes sense right? She hasn't done anything, or said
anything for that matter, to make her suspicious. I wish everyone
would fucking stop treating her like the enemy!”
“I did not mean-“
“Feh! No one ever means it. I don't know why the hell
the wench wants to join us when everyone treats her so damned
coldly!”
He wasn't sure what sparked this anger. He couldn't stand it when
people spoke badly about Kikyou. It wasn't her fault that things
had turned out the way they had. He wished people could have known
the woman he had 50 years ago.
True, he knew he wasn't in love with her, but he sure as hell
wouldn't stand for anyone bad mouthing her!
“Ye misunderstand, and are quick to anger as always,
Inuyasha. Speaking of my sister though where has she gone too? Ye
said she had business with me, but she has not seeked me
out.”
He was about to retort, but the mat was pulled from the doorway. He
saw Kagome enter. He could smell the scents of Sango ad Miroku
outside, but thought nothing of it.
“Kikyou is in the fields gathering herbs, Kaede.” She
smiled at the older woman as brightly as she could. “Do you
think I could talk to Inuyasha for a moment?”
“Of course child. Take all the time ye need.” Kaede
rose to her feet. Kagome watched in sympathy; she knew the older
miko was getting on in age and fully feeling its effects. She
wondered if Kikyou would take over or her once Naranku was
defeated. Then Inuyasha would have a place in the village; he would
have a place to lay his head at night and feel safe.
Once the woman retreated, she looked at the hanyou, who was
obviously uneasy. She walked over to him and drank in the sight. He
was so beautiful, so handsome, exotic, and pure man. She knew she
would never meet another person like him as long as she lived. She
knelt down to make herself level with him.
“Wh-what is it Kagome?”
She leaned in closer to him, startling the hanyou, causing him to
arch an eyebrow. As he opened his mouth to question her again, she
crashed her lips against his. Inuyasha was shocked at first, but
quickly lost himself in the sensation of her tongue running over
his. It was slow and filled with passion. It was as if she was
trying to memorize every inch of him as her tongue fought for
dominance. The only thing that brought him out of his stupor was
the feeling of her lifting the rosary off his neck. He tore his
lips away, looking at her in disbelief.
“Kagome!” He tried to push her hands down, to make her
relinquish her control of the necklace. She bit her lips before
leaning in to kiss his quickly. She lifted the beads over his
head.
“Its time Inuyasha. You haven't needed these for a long
time.”
“But Kagome, its not about me attacking you for the shards.
What if I turn into a demon and-“ She placed her hand on
either side of his face, making him took into her eyes.
“I always knew you wouldn't hurt me. I'm sorry I abused
them.”
She leaned in and kissed him once more before standing.
“Besides, I'm the only one who can take these off right? I
don't want this stuck on you when-“
“What are you saying Kagome? His voice was low, dangerous.
His bangs covered his eyes, his claws scraping against the floor
boards.”
“I'm leaving Inuyasha.” She bit her lips at the harsh
words.
“Don't fucking say that to me! How can you fucking say that?!
Damn bitch!” He shot to his feet, anger rolling off of
him.
Kagome looked at him with tears in her eyes. “I'm really
sorry Inuyasha. I'm doing this for you.” The miko
pushed past the mat in the doorway. The hanyou quickly tried to
follow.
“GET BACK HERE BITCH! I AINT DONE TALKING TO-Ah!”
He was pushed back. He couldn't leave the damn hut!
“What the fuck is this? KAGOME! KAGOME!”
“Inuyasha,” the male voice said, heavy with grief,
“Kagome has left. She is making her way to the well as we
speak.”
“Damn it! Let me the fuck out of here!”
“I can't. Kagome asked that I place sacred sutras on the hut
so she could get there without interruption.”
“And you're fucking letting her get away? LET ME THE FUCK
OUT!”
“I will when you've calmed down and Kagome has had a head
start to her time.”
“How the hell am I supposed to be calm when you've let Kagome
get away?”
“Inuyasha, this is just as hard for me.” Miroku cut in,
anger seeping into his voice for the first time.
Kagome ran to the well as fast as her legs would carry her. She
rubbed the tears from her eyes to clear her vision. She stopped
short when she saw Shippo waiting on the lip of the well.
“Ship-Shippo- What are you doing here?”
“I came to say good bye.” His gaze down cast, voice
quivering. “I wouldn't be able to forgive myself if I- if
I-“
Kagome swooped the kit into her arms and held him close as hey
openly cried together. She could hear the shots of Inuyasha in the
back ground becoming more furious.
“I love you Shippo. But, I have to go.” She held him
closer, placed a kiss on top of his head and muttering an `I'm
sorry'. She placed her legs over the lips of the well, took a deep
breath, and plunged into the time slip, leaving behind the world
she held so dear.
~.~
It took several hours before he calmed down. His demon was ready to
flood and take him over. He honestly had no idea why he hadn't
completely lost control, he could feel it at the edge the entire
time. He just kept repeating to himself that if he lost the battle
with his demon blood, that damned monk would never take the sutras
down. The sooner he was let out of the fucking hut the sooner he
could get to the well and get his bitch back. He didn't care if he
had to drag her kicking and screaming!
“Inuyasha, Im going to take the sutra down.” Mirkou
warned. “Please do not be violent. We are all too tired to
deal with this today.”
Once the dog demon was able to leave the hut he shot out quickly as
he could. His eye narrowed dangerously as he growled at his
`friend'.
“I will not ever forgive you for this, you
bastard.”
“Kagome had her reasons, Inuyasha.”
“I don't want to fucking hear it from you bastard! This was
all a waste of time. Im going to that well and dragging the wench
back!”
“Inu-“ he tried, but the demon was gone. Miroku shook
his head, rubbed his eyes and sighed. He began the walk to the
well.
~.~
He tried again. He jumped into the well and nothing happened.
He leapt out to repeat the process, finding only solid ground
instead of the time slip. Why the hell was it rejecting him now?!
He stiffened as he caught Kikyous scent.
“Inuyasha, it is time that we spoke.”
The hanyou jumped out of the well, the pads of his feet landing on
grass softly.
“I don't have time to talk. I have to get Kagome.”
“Why? Why must you retrieve that girl? Is she really so
important to you?”
“I! Well- I!” He was having trouble forming his word,
his tongue felt thick.
“It is impossible you know. That girl has sealed the well in
her time.”
“Feh, bitch tried that once before and that didn't stop me
from getting through! Her grandfathers weak talismans are
useless.”
“It was not her grndfathers, but her own that have sealed the
well, Inuyasha.”
“Wh, what are you talking about?”
“I gave them to her. With her power of a miko as my
reincarnation, they would naturaly be effective, even if she does
not have proper control of her ability.”
“Why would you do that Kikyou?”He asked, disbelief in
his voice.
“She has given us gift, Inuyasha. I have been recalled from
my grave, and have the opportunity to walk among the living- to
walk with you. I no longer have the desire to unite us in Hell. I
wish to do it now, by your side, as your wife.”
