Chapter 3 - Explanations

Inuyasha and Kagome sat watching the fire. Both were lost in their own thoughts. Both were thinking about the same incident. The kiss. Kagome was wondering if she had acted too rashly. Inuyasha was wondering if Kagome was regretting it.

"I…"

"I…"

They both started at the same time, then started to laugh.

"You go first, Kagome."

"No, you go ahead."

"I don't want you to regret that kiss. I believe that we both enjoyed it. Kagome, I love you no matter what."

"Inuyasha, I love you so much. I wasn't sure what you thought of me. I mean even for my time I was fairly bold, especially for this time.

"Kagome, don't ever believe that I would ever think that of you. I love you."

"Inuyasha, I was wondering…?"

"Yes, Kagome?"

"Why are we going to Sesshoumaru's palace?"

Inuyasha nearly face faulted. "Because I made a promise to visit Ume once a year."

"Who's Ume?"

"Jealous?"

"No, just curious."

"Ume was a human. She was my nanny."

"What happened?"

"She was killed at the same time as my mother, whose grave we will also visit. There was an attack on the palace. My brother was away and the enemy got past my father and the defenders. They somehow found their way into the family wing. My mother, Ume, and a few maids made a stand. They shoved me in a hidden compartment in my room. It was charmed so only certain people could open it; obviously, I was not one of them. They took out more of the enemy than they were in number." Inuyasha looked at the stars sadly, "I have always believed that if Sesshoumaru was there they would have made it."

"Inuyasha, I'm sorry. I shouldn't have asked."

"No, its ok, Kagome. You have a right to know why I am taking you into what for all intents and purposes is enemy territory. I wonder what Ume would say about the battles that Sesshoumaru and I have. She would probably have a fit," he finished with a sad smile.

"Why do you say that?"

"When Ume was alive, my brother was a totally different person. He was happy. When he smiled, it was genuine. He was actually an excellent older brother. After she died he turned cold, he quit acting like a brother or a son. He rarely came home. As soon as our father died he threw me out, though he allows me back on the anniversary of the attack."

"Inuyasha?"

"Yes, Kagome?"

"Would you…? I mean if you don't mind could we…?"

"Yes, Kagome, I'll kiss you again."

And he did. This time though Inuyasha took control of it. Kagome could not believe the sensation. He was so gentle. Inuyasha ran his tongue along her lower lip, begging for entrance. Her lips parted and his tongue slid in. Kagome moaned and Inuyasha growled then broke the kiss.

"Did I do something wrong?"

"No, Kagome, you did everything right. It's just we both know that nothing can come of this. We need to stop before it's too late."

"Inuyasha, I don't care what happens in the future. All I know is I love you and this feels right. What's wrong with stealing a little happiness if we can?"

"Kagome, I can't ruin you like that. You deserve a mate and children."

"Inuyasha, I come from a different time. We don't value virginity quite as much, you wouldn't be ruining me. If I ever wanted to marry when I return home, I wouldn't have a problem."

"Still, I can't, Kagome. I'm from this time, as you put it. What we're doing goes against everything I believe. I can't go farther then friendship without making you completely mine."

"Inu…"

"Kagome, I can't take you as a lover. The only way I want you is as a mate. If I make you my mate, I won't be able to leave you and I would lose my honor. Kagome, please understand, I love you, but I am a hanyou, all I have is my honor. If I lose that I am truly nothing."

"I'm sorry, Inuyasha, I'm being selfish and I know it. I will go back on my own tomorrow. I've already caused enough problems in this period. I love you." She turned her back on him so he did not see the tears, but he could smell them.

"Kagome… Kagome, please don't cry. Kagome, I will not let you go anywhere without me until I must fulfill my promise or until you tell me that you no longer want love me. Anyway, Sesshoumaru probably already knows that you're with me. He'll use you against me. Not that that is the only reason, but I'm afraid of losing you. I love you so much it scares me."

"Inuyasha, could we just pretend for tonight that we can be together and you hold me while we sleep."

"I believe we can do that. Come here, we need to get going early in the morning."

`So the fool refuses to mark his bitch,' thought Sesshoumaru. `A bigger fool then I ever believed possible. Perhaps I should mark her. Filthy human won't live long after I get done with her.' He once again neared the plum tree. It seemed to droop in despair. "I have had enough of this Ume! You abandoned me. I have the right to take a new mate of my choosing and after I mark the miko, I will cut you down in front of them! You will never be able to haunt me again!"
