TwoThe meal at the palace that night was a bit tense but Kagome figured it was probably the best that she could hope for given the situation. She and Rin chatted happily while Sango glowered at Miroku for eyeing a pretty demon maid. Inuyasha stuffed himself earning glares from Sesshoumaru for bad manners."Sesshoumaru-sama" Rin chirped brightly and the stoic lord graced his ward with his full attention, "Will Kagome-sama and the other be staying with us?". Sesshoumaru nodded slightly, "Yes Rin, they shall remain here to look after you while I am away."Wide brown eyes filled with tears, "You are leaving?" she asked, her little lip trembled. He reached out and patted her head, "Rin, there will be no crying. I won't be gone for very long and you can torment Inuyasha as much as you like, but you must behave for Kagome and Sango. And stay away from that monk." he told her. Both males sputtered with indignation. The child was soothed, at least for the moment and a short time later he called Jaken to take her to bed. "I'll be along soon Rin". She nodded, bowed to her lord and their guests and hurried after the little green toad."Hey Sesshoumaru I've been meaning to ask you something" Inuyasha announced when the doors had clicked shut, "How come you put us together in rooms?" Sesshoumaru stared hard for a moment, then stood, "You are an idiot Inuyasha. I know that Kagome won't let you wreak havoc in my castle and the slayer will keep the monk in check around my maids. I had hoped that you might be more creative but I see that I was wrong. Good night"Now, an hour later Kagome stepped from the bath and into the confines of the large room. Inuyasha stared out the window. "Hey," she called watching his ear swivel toward her, "I'm all done in the bath. Thanks for letting me go first".Inuyasha huffed, "Don't I always?". Kagome rolled her eyes, so much for being pleasant. He stalked past her to the bath, his eyes somewhat troubled, but she held her tongue...for now. Her gaze turned to the bed,it was huge. She supposed there was no harm in sharing it. Not like they hadn't both slept in her bed a time or two. She wondered how Sango and Miroku were handling the arrangement."I am finished in the bath Miroku, all yours" Sango announced from the door. Miroku nodded and smiled, "Thanks Sango, I am a bit sore and a hot bath would feel wonderful, I don't suppose that you would consider rubbing them for me, there is one in particular that really...OW!"Sango smiled at the bright handprint on his face. "Not a chance lecher." The monk hung his head in defeat and walked into the bathing room. "I suppose you are going to make me sleep on the cold hard floor too?" he muttered. Sango eyed him and eyed the bed, "No I think I can manage something." she replied and the monk shut the door smiling.Sango went to the bed and firmly wedged hiraikotsu between the head and foot board, effectively making a small wall between them. "That should do it. I can't believe he put us in a room together." she grumbled. Miroku made quick work of his bath and opened the door with a wide grin only to let it droop at the sight before him. Sango curled warmly in bed, smiling quite smugly at him from over the edge of her weapon. "Night Miroku!" she said brightly and settled beneath the covers. She almost giggled at the groan from him.Kagome waited in the bed, her thoughts a jumble in her head. Inuyasha must be having a hard time here. This is the home that should have been his. How different he would have been. Would he have been like Sesshoumaru? Or was Sesshoumaru not really like this? Was it the loss of his wife that made him so cold? What had happened? There was only one person who could answer her questions and she had no intention of tripping down the hall to the Taiyoukai's bedroom and asking. She could wait. The door slid open to her left and she closed her eyes, feigning sleep. She head the soft padding of Inuyasha's feet against the floor as he came closer. He paused and she supposed he was looking around for a pile of blankets on the floor, finding none. She heard the creak of the wardrobe door, where they had been told sleeping robes were kept and then the rustle of his clothing. The bed sagged a bit from his weight when he climbed in and she felt the covers lift then fall.He had kept a careful eye on Kagome as he changed his clothes and got into bed. She appeared to be asleep but her heart rate said otherwise. It was beating far too fast. She was awake. He said nothing as he settled himself on his back, golden eyes fixed on the high ceiling. Today had been too strange, too much new information and he needed to sort through it, try to make some sense of it. A slight movement caught his attention. Kagome had shivered. He glanced at her from the corner of his eye. "I know your awake" he said then, and the figure stiffened. Inuyasha sighed, "Are you cold?" He didn't see how she could be, he didn't think it was, but then women were like that he'd noticed."A little," came her almost shy answer. She felt Inuyasha shift, "Come here" he commanded, his voice gruff. She supposed he was tired and she was keeping him up. Slowly she turned to look at him, he was frowning of course, "Are you gonna lay there and shiver all night?" he asked her. She shifted closer to him.Inuyasha tucked an arm around her and pushed her head onto his shoulder, tugging the blankets up once again. "Now go to sleep". Kagome was stiff in his arms, but the warmth from his body and his familiar scent began to calm her. Inuyasha felt her tension and gently rubbed her upper arm. In no time, she was yawning and drifting off to sleep. He liked the weight of her against him, liked the way she clung to him when she slept. He was certain she was asleep now, her heart beat slow and steady. Turning his head to the side, he nuzzled in her still slightly damp hair. He inhaled that cool clean scent and closed his eyes for a moment. He loved her, more than his own life, more than anything he'd encountered in his life. And he couldn't tell her that, there was still a quest to finish... a war to fight. He couldn't tell her, just couldn't. And that meant he couldn't have her either. It was enough to make him want to get up and black his brother's eyes. This was sweet torment, to have her so close. He suspected that if he attempted, she'd allow and that was a temptation that he didn't think he would walk away from. No it was better to leave it alone, so of course here he was with a scantily clad Kagome draped over him in bed.Sesshoumaru was wrong, Inuyasha was plenty creative. Unfortunately for him, fate just had really shitty timing.Sesshoumaru had finished his time with Rin and returned to his chambers. He paced before the long wall of windows that looked out over his domain. Almost time, almost time. The gate would open at dawn and he'd be gone. He had located her, only had to get her to come home with him. Too much was at stake for him to fail.Walking to the dark corner which was covered in heavy drapes, he tugged the material aside. There was the mirror which allowed him to pass, which had aided her escape from him, and just behind it on the wall, hung the portrait of his long absent mate. Dressed in her wedding finery. He stared up at her, even now, his hunger for her raged. "You must return now Ayeka. If you do not, our battles will be for nothing." Her portrait smiled down him, eyes warm with love that he had once seen here in this palace, in the bed just beyond. Love that he saw across battlefields now. With a low growl, he tugged the drapes to cover her. Then he sat in the chair before the mirror and waited, waited for the glow that led to a new world.
