9: The Story of the Souls

Beep! Beep! Beep! Kagome was pulled from her dream when her watch began to beep. She quickly opened her eyes and stopped the beeping. She looked up and saw an up-and-awake Sesshomaru growling at her watch. "What is that thing?" "This is a watch. It tells time and you can set an alarm on it so that it will beep at a certain time, Lord Sesshomaru." Kagome explained. "Where did you get this `watch'?" Kagome tensed when she remembered that she was from a different time. "I-It's a long story… I mean, it's a long story, Lord Sesshomaru." "Tell me." "You probably wouldn't believe me, Lord Sesshomaru…" "Tell me, wench!!!" "Well, it all began on my fifteenth birthday…" Kagome began to tell Sesshomaru about the well, how she met Inuyasha, and the days they spent traveling and searching for shards.

The camp was nearly set up when Shippo set down the firewood. "Koga's coming." They looked in the direction that the kitsune was pointing to. Instead of the huge tornado of dust that they always saw, there was only a small tornado. The lack of the Shikon shards slowed him down, but he was still one of the fastest youkai in the land. In a few seconds, he stood before them. "Where's Kagome? Where's dogbreath?" he asked curiously. "Inuyasha mated a corpse and Kagome ran away leaving us the completed Shikon Jewel. Inuyasha lied to us that he couldn't find Kagome and he obviously wanted to steal the jewel, so we left." Miroku replied with a sigh. "Dogbreath did what?! He mated a corpse and hurt Kagome like that? If you ever decide to kill the dumb puppy, call me so I can join you! `Till then!!!" Koga left in a slightly smaller-than-usual whirlwind of dust.

"I sense them! Now, I can have the Shikon Jewel with no worries!" Inuyasha smirked. He knelt down so that Kikyo could climb onto his back before he sped off, leaping from tree to tree.

"Interesting… So, you are the one who possessed the jewel at first. Why do you remain here when you could return to your time?" "The jewel is my responsibility. I was the one who shattered it. Besides, I want to help my friends, Lord Sesshomaru." Sesshomaru's respect for Kagome went up a notch. She was responsible, loyal, caring, beautiful… It took all of his control to resist mating this image of perfection in heat. What was he thinking? She was a human!

Mother Life sat her daughters down. "Fate, Destiny, do you know the reason why the souls must be together?" The two girls shook their heads. "Many years ago, I was asked by the Kami to birth the perfect soul. "What's a perfect soul?" Fate asked. "A perfect soul is kind, courageous, caring, beautiful, loyal, responsible, honest, and selfless. It kills when it needs to, it can be deadly, but it is merciful. Sadly, the soul was too great to be placed within one body. The soul was divided between two beings, a human and a demon. The human was a woman and she received three-fourths of the soul. The demon was a male and one-fourth of the soul was given to him to join his own soul. The human was a miko and she received a good portion of the soul, but the demon was only deadly and courageous. Together, the souls are powerful and good, but alone, the souls are useless. Those with part of the soul must be joined, for the good part of the soul keeps the deadly part under control. Only when the souls are joined can the Great Demon and Naraku be truly defeated."

"How are the souls joined?" Destiny asked confusedly. "Well," Mother Life sighed "the souls must be returned to their rightful bodies and the two bearers of the souls must be joined as mates. A fourth of the soul lies in the Shikon no Tama, a little less than half is in Kagome, a fourth is in Sesshomaru, and a small portion is in Kikyo." "Why must Sesshomaru die if they do not become mates?" "You see, if Kagome's part of the soul is not there to control Sesshomaru's, it could mean chaos and death in the world. Sesshomaru's own soul has control over his share of the perfect soul, but if he were ever to lose control over his demonic instincts, his deadliness could result in horrible things." Fate began to understand her Mother Life's words. "What you mean is, even though Kagome's duty is to become Sesshomaru's mate, the fate of the Shikon no Tama and Naraku also intertwines with her duty somehow?" "Hai."

"You will take this Sesshomaru to your time in the near future." Kagome grimaced at the thought of Sesshomaru in her time, killing off everything in his path. Still, she was under his control. "Hai, Lord Sesshomaru." Their conversation was interrupted when there was a sharp rap on the door. "Lord Sesshomaru, the Son of the Wolf-Demon Clan demands your audience." Jaken squealed. Sesshomaru immediately stood to leave the room as his servant followed.

Koga stood in the dining room when he sensed a familiar scent approaching. "Kagome?" he whispered. Sesshomaru walked into the room with a servant trailing behind him. The servant's head hung low as a servant's was supposed to, but that scent… `No, Kagome wouldn't be here. It's probably someone else.' Koga thought. The two youkai sat at the table as the servant stood behind Sesshomaru. "Lord Sesshomaru, Naraku has been causing trouble near my lands and is most likely heading here next." Sesshomaru narrowed his eyes. "That hanyou will never defeat me…" "Your half-brother and his group have separated.

The servant's head popped up. "What?!" "Kagome?" Koga stood up and ran over to the servant. "I saw the two humans and the two demons that day. They were searching for you. I was so worried! What are you doing here?!" Koga pulled Kagome into an embrace, but Kagome pushed away. "Why did they separate?" "Dogbreath…he wanted to steal the jewel." Kagome gasped in anger, horror, and sadness. "Please, Koga, watch out for my friends for me. Inuyasha…I don't know what he'd do…" "I promise you, Kagome. Besides, you're my woman… I'd do anything for you." Koga leaned over to kiss Kagome when Kagome stopped him. "Koga, I'm sorry, but I don't feel the same…" Koga looked slightly hurt. "It's okay, as long as I have someone like you as a friend, that's good enough."

Sesshomaru fought the urge to growl when the wolf tried to kiss his servant, but then stopped himself as he heard Kagome reject him. "Kagome, just give me one kiss before I leave. A…um…friendship kiss." Kagome smiled and stood on the tips of her toes to give him a peck on the cheek when they hear a loud growl. "Keep your paws off of my servant, wolf." Sesshomaru grabbed Kagome and dismissed Koga. He glared down at Kagome. "Wench, you are mine and no one else's, understand? No other male will touch you except for me." `What is this sudden feeling of possessiveness?' Sesshomaru thought. He quickly released Kagome and began his duties as a lord as she followed.

It was nearly nightfall as Sango prepared to sleep. Shippo had been asleep for the last hour and was now snuggled in her arms with the Shikon no Tama. Miroku was leaning back on a boulder and looking intently at his hand. `I wonder how it feels to know that you might die in a few years…' Sango thought sadly. `He must feel so miserable every single--.' Sango's thoughts were interrupted when Kirara began to growl. Danger was approaching…
