Chapter 3: Not There

God gave my world to me,
And I rebelliously
Cried out, “How small!
And is this all?”
His words were sad, yet mild:
“All that you love, my child.”

~C. R. Piety (Excerpt from “My World”)

She didn't come today…and I became mad because I had my sketchbook with me-and new pencils I had bought for this very occasion. I almost didn't come but I couldn't help the longing I have to see her again. I want to capture her soul…and stick it into my drawings - just to get one true picture of her beauty! It seems that no matter what I do, my sketches seem flawed…nothing is quite as luminous and radiant as this woman herself. I imagine her in my head, but she is blurred somewhat and I cannot remember the distinct lines of her face. I curse myself inwardly because of it. I cannot go on without her there.

“So he came to work last night?”

“Yeah…”

“Kagome why aren't you happy then? Has he been abusing you?!”

“SANGO!”

“Well since when is a girlfriend supposed to be so depressed when her boyfriend comes home early from his mother's funeral to be with her?”

“Well that's the thing…I'm glad! Really I am, it's just that he didn't want to do anything…”

“Kagome he had to drive like five hours.”

“So? If it was so important to come see me why was he so…distant when we saw each other in the locker room?”

Sango sighed, shaking her head as Oni rested his head in her lap.

They were sitting on the living room floor in Kagome's apartment. The animals around them both, mainly the dogs with Buyo casually surveying the proceedings from his perch on top of the couch. All in all, it was quiet except for the snow storm raging outside. When it had started blowing really hard Sango had come over because she knew about Kagome's dislike of being alone during storms. Something along the lines of being left alone when she was little and the storm being so big it blew in one of their windows. So...ever since she had been uncomfortable whenever they happened. There must have been three feet of snow already on the ground outside...and it didn't look even close to sopping.

“Your just downing yourself because of that sick kitten.” Sango said with a frown at her friend.

“No…I'm downing myself because he's gone a lot and when he's here he never really wants to do anything.”

“Do you like him?”

Kagome shifted uncomfortably, hesitating in her answer.

“I guess…”

“Do you have fun when you're with him?”

“I guess…”

“Do you sleep with him?”

“I-hey!”

Sango laughed, putting her hands up in the air in her defense.

“Sorry, sorry! But I told you I wouldn't let you go about it!”

“What is it with your obsession with me sleeping with people? Its Miroku isn't it? He's converted you!”

“NO!” Sango said, blushing heavily.

Kagome laughed, Nikkou whining quietly as she rolled onto her stomach. Obediently, Kagome rubbed her belly.

“Ha! Now who's hesitant?”

“Whatever.”

“Now you sound like Inuyasha!”

“He says `whatever'?”

“More then I say his name.” Kagome said, rolling her eyes.

“Wow…that's a lot…”

“Shut up, Sango!” Kagome said laughing as she hit her with a couch pillow.

Sango ducked, Oni and Daisan woofing happily as they chased after her, Daisan tackling her to the floor the first chance he got.

“Back! Back! Off! Down! Sit! Anything!” Sango laughed as they proceeded to lick her to death.

Kagome, ignoring her friend in need, lay on her stomach, her legs kicking back and forth behind her as she snuggled Oni.

“So, pretty much my reason for all this moping is that he turned down lunch today after work. Something about a really stressful surgery. Not that I can blame him…they 'can' be stressful…”

“But…?” Sango asked finally gaining the upper hand over the two dogs that were still trying to maul her.

“But he promised we would spend time together…and we never do. There always seems to be an excuse.”

Sango scooted over to sit next to her, fending off the vicious animals licking and snuffling the life out of her.

“Don't be so sad Kagome…I rarely see Miroku.”

“I'm sorry…I knew that…oh Sango, that's horrible of me to complain when you see Miroku even less then I see Inuyasha!” Kagome said, tears coming to her eyes.

Sango reached over and hugged her gently.

“Don't…its fine. We both knew the problems when we started going out…so it's okay.”

“I know…I just shouldn't be selfish…”

“Bah! You don't have one selfish bone in that petite body of yours! Now you stop crying and go fix me a sandwich! These mutts have nearly gnawed off my skin so I need something to put it back on.” She said as they both looked at the three dogs licking different parts of her body. Oni currently had her calf while Daisan and Nikkou her left arm.

“Gnaw?” Kagome asked with amusement as she got up.

Sango glared sourly at her and then back down at the dogs.

“Well fine! Let them chew me to death!” She said grumpily.

“Yeah.” Kagome said over her shoulder as she went into the kitchen to make sandwiches.

“I'll call Miroku to tell him he needs to come back to help identify your body.” She called from the kitchen.

“THAT'S NOT FUNNY!” Sango screeched from inside the living room.

Kagome laughed.

“So have you found someone yet, Koga darling?”

“Kagura, it's been all of twenty-four hours.”

“So?” Kagura asked, pouting prettily.

Koga laughed.

“I have a few friends looking around with me. They'll probably have someone by either today or tomorrow.”

“Really?” Kagura asked hopefully.

He shrugged.

“I said probably, not defiantly. Besides, this thing isn't for a while right?”

“December thirty-first.”

He looked surprised.

“Ô Misoka?”

“Hai. I was going to have it Gannjitsu, but Ô Misoka seemed better.”

“Kagura, that's New Years Eve…”

“You have a problem with my decision, Koga?” She asked, giving him a sharp glance.

He put his hands up in defense.

“As you wish. Ô Misoka, it is.”

“Good. Now go out and find me some new art.”

“Don't worry…I think I know someone.”

“Oh? Who exactly is that?”

“An old college friend of mine. You wouldn't know him.” He said as Kagura gave him an insistent look.

“Oh. Is he good?”

“He is…passable.” Koga said with a grin.

`Oh if she only knew. No, if only `he' knew. He'd kill me for calling him 'passable'…but still.'

“Fine…” She waved her ougi at him dismissively.

He bowed, and backed away, turned to the door and left.

Kagura smiled when he was gone, marching down the hallway, smiling at guests who were exploring the museum.

She needed to go plan the guest list again.

Notes - Sorry for such a short chapter but I was distracted…I was having Sesshomaru withdrawals. Yes! It's true, alas! But I know so much about him…well, kinda. Lol. Anyway, keep reading, and for god's sake, give me something to work with.
