Chapter Three: The Test

Sango sat just outside the hut, her head hung low as Kirara mewed by her ankles. `Oh, hoshi-sama, why were you saying that about me in the well?' The mere thought made the blood rush to her face. `Why are you upset about it, you love that damn lech! But it scares you just the same. To think what might happen if you just let your guard down.' Sango's eyes shot wide with the thought. “If I just knew you would stay with me Miroku…” She muttered softly, as the fire cat rubbed gently against her side.

Looking up, she could see a hint of red in the distance as Shippo bounded towards her, his fiery hair aglow in the bright midday sun. Sango pushed away her fears and stood, waiting for Kagome and Miroku. As the group grew closer, she could see that Kagome was wearing InuYasha's hoari and that the two were holding hands. `What is going on here?' the thought cut short by Keade's appearance from the hut.

“Ah, I see they have returned. Good.” Keade announced.

Sango just stood there, confusion in her thoughts as the group arrived. Looking up, she found herself facing pale lavender eyes.

“Gomen, Sango.” The monk whispered before entering the hut.

Sango stood there speechless as Shippo tugged gently on her leg. Shaking her head, Sango looked down at the grinning fox demon.

“I made sure Miroku didn't get into anymore trouble.” The kitsune said with a wicked glint in his eye, “But I don't know about Kagome and dog-face.”

“Hey, I heard that you little runt!” InuYasha howled before knocking Shippo over the head.

“Wahhhh…Dog-face hit me Kagome!” he howled.

“Why you little…” the hanyou hollered.

“InuYasha…” Kagome's voice rang out.

Wincing in anticipation. “Osuwari”, the rosary turning bright purple as it pulled him to the ground. `One day I will get this damn thing off, and that little fox is gonna pay,' InuYasha thought as the ground came up to meet him.

“I am glad ye have returned Kagome, we seem to be having some strange occurrences with the appearance of this disk. Let's go in and discuss it.” With that Keade ushered the group into the hut, InuYasha spitting some dirt from his mouth before entering.

Kagome held the shining disk-like object in her hands, feeling the energy, but no ill effects. Running her fingers across the surface, she could feel some sort of marking, but was unable to make them out upon looking at them. Handing the gem to InuYasha, he just sighed, then gave it back to her. `Some help you are,' she thought sourly. Looking up at the elder miko, “Keade, do you mind if I try something?”

“What are you thinking of child?” She replied.

“Miroku, can you take the gem please?” Kagome asked.

Miroku looked at the priestess, suddenly flustered as he waved his hands and grinned self-consciously. InuYasha and Shippo could be heard snickering at the monks response. Kagome shot them a glare of warning.

“How about you Sango?”

Leaning forward nervously, the taijiya slowly lifted the glowing light from Kagome's hand as the world went fuzzy around her. The sound of waves bombarded her senses, as she felt the soft caress of lips on her neck. Turning her head, deep lavender eyes bore into her own with such intensity she though she would fall beneath them. As her legs became jelly, two robed arms wrapped protectively around her. “Hoshi-sama?” the question a mere whisper. “I only want you Sango, my love.” His voice like silk against her restraint. Finding her walls falling, Sango gave herself to the sensation that the waves brought as Miroku's lips claimed hers.

The group sat silently in the hut, watching as the effects of the jewel overtook Sango, her gaze clouding over instantly. Sango muttered something softly as the dream claimed her. The group watched in quiet fascination, as the disk in Sango's grasp grew brighter, the glow intensifying. Kagome had seen enough. Reaching for the gem, she pried it from Sango's tightening fingers just as a wave of blinding energy pulsed outward, making everyone in the small hut gasp.

“What is that thing?” InuYasha said in a voice bordering between fear and morbid fascination.

“Whatever it is, it seems to pull one from themself.” Kagome heard herself say, the pulsing energy still humming faintly in her head.

“It was like a dream…” Sango spoke softly.

Everyone looked at the demon exterminator, not realizing she had come out of her trance.

“What kind of dream?” Miroku couldn't help himself.

Coming to her senses, Sango glared at the monk. “One where I got Kohaku back.”

Slightly crestfallen, the monk sighed inwardly. `Of course it would be Kohaku,' he thought dismally.

Sango looked down at the floor to hide her slight smile. `He's upset.'

Kagome shrieked slightly as InuYasha suddenly pulled her up. His gaze that of intense determination. “Whatever this damn thing is, it came from the well, so we should go check it out.” InuYasha commanded. `If it came from the well, then it's probably tied to Kagome somehow.' He thought with worry.

The group all looked at InuYasha in shock, but agreed that checking out the bone eaters well would be the best thing.

The next thing Kagome knew, she was on InuYasha's back rushing along the ground towards the well, and the mysterious origins of the dream inducing gem.
