Chapter Four: The Ties That Bind
Kagome peered into the black depths of the bone eaters well, the eerie sense of foreboding crawling along her skin. Leaning forward just a bit more, she felt a slight breeze lift the bottom of InuYasha's hoari, and just as the blush crept to her cheeks, she heard Miroku's whistle travel the air currents to her ears. Straightening suddenly, she turned to see the red-faced monk held a good foot in the air by the enraged hanyou. InuYasha's clawed fingers ready to strike should Miroku make a move.
“InuYasha, osuwari!”, Kagome shouted.
“Kuso, wench!” InuYasha howled as the rosary pulled him to the earth.
A grateful Miroku quickly scrambled out of the hanyou's reach, only to find another more dangerous creature.
Wincing as he spoke, “gomen, Sango…”
The taijiya glared at the cringing monk as she let the boomerang bone thunk his head.
“But Sango, my love…How could I resist…” Miroku stuttered, then stopped as fire lit the demon slayers eyes. The monk gulped audibly as InuYasha's howl permeated the very air. “I'm gonna kill you monk!”
“Oh, I think I hear Keade calling…I think I'll go meet her.” With that, Miroku bolted from his cower and ran towards the elder priestess's voice.
“Damn lech, how dare he think he can look at my mate!” InuYasha roared as the subduing spell wore off. Just as he was ready to chase after and beat the amorous monk to a pulp, Kagome gently grabbed his wrist. Whirling around to face her, he became even more outraged at the smile on her face. “What's so funny?”
“So, I'm your mate now?” She teased him.
Reaching forward to pull Kagome into his arms, InuYasha flinched. Swacking at his nose, he saw the annoying object float slowly onto his opened palm.
“Miyoga ji-chan!” Kagome welcomed.
“Whaddaya want, you cowardly insect?” The hanyou glared.
“Ah, InuYasha-sama. I'm so glad I found you. Something terrible has happened!”
“What's going on Miyoga?” Sango asked as she crept up behind the pair, Shippo perched on her shoulder.
“The ancient darkness has been awoken.” The flea chirped.
“Ancient darkness, what's that?” Kagome questioned.
“It is the root of all the misery and pain in the world.” Keade chimed in as she shuffled up to the small group.
“So, what're we supposed to do about it?” InuYasha growled.
“I do not know master InuYasha.” Miyoga said solemly.
“What the fuck does that mean, you damn flea!” The hanyou shouted as he held one clawed finger over the bug.
“What he means, InuYasha, is that he does not have the answers you seek.” The elder priestess answered softly.
“Well,” Kagome offered, “Who would have the answers?”
“There is talk of one who might know how to defeat the darkness, for he is said to live in the place of its birth. Mt. Eien no yoru.” Miyoga said as he hopped onto Kagome's arm.
“The mountain of eternal night…” Miroku spoke from beyond the huddle.
“Yes, but it is a treacherous journey, and there are many things of evil that you must pass to reach the mountain.” Keade said.
Slamming his fists together, “Bring em' on.”
“InuYasha, one does not go blindly into the heart of all darkness.” Miroku piped up.
Glaring at the monk, InuYasha howled, “What then?”
“Before you run off, Lord InuYasha, you must know that there is another half to this story. The root of all desire seeks freedom as well, and Kagome-sama knows this.”
“What?” The young priestess cried.
“Kagome, do you not sense the shift in the air around you?” Keade said calmly.
Thinking of the feeling emanating from the well, Kagome shook her head in agreement. “It's the gem” she whispered.
Sango and Miroku both gasped, as they had been pulled into the shining jewels vortex and knew its power.
Worry filled InuYasha's heart as he stepped protectively by Kagome. “What can we do then?” he said quietly.
“I am uncertain, lord InuYasha. But it seems that destiny is pulling you and Kagome-sama toward this path.” Miyoga's defeated words filled the air.
“Well, you two aren't goin' without us.” The furry kitsune shouted, Miroku and Sango nodding their heads in agreement.
“Well, I guess it's settled then. Tomorrow you will depart for Mt. Eien no yoru. You should gather your supplies then get some rest, for it will be a long journey.” Keade said as she turned to head for the village.
Kagome…I swear I will keep you safe. InuYasha thought as he watched the group head back to the village, claws digging into the palms of his hands. I will not lose you too!
“InuYasha.” The hanyou peered up through the bangs shading his eyes to see Kagome holding her hand out toward him, that gentle smile of hers welcoming him.
Growling softly, he stomped over to her, and took her hand in his and pulled her towards the retreating group. “C'mon wench, we got work to do.” The widening grin on Kagome's lips did not escape his notice as she happily trudged after him.
