Days later they finally reached the castle. Sesshomaru greeted them at the gate and they all went into the dining room for lunch. “How was your travel?” Sesshomaru asked.

 

Kagome visibly cringed and pushed her plate aside. “I'm not hungry. Excuse me.” She said and left the room.

 

Inuyasha would've gone after her if she didn't look like she needed time alone. He watched as she exited the room and sighed. She was still mourning and probably would be for a while. He hated that he couldn't do anything for her. So far all he did was try to comfort her but that always led to worse situations.

 

“I take it something happened.” Sesshomaru said.

 

“Kagome's family was murdered.” Inuyasha said.

 

“I see. Was the murderer caught?” Sesshomaru asked.

 

“No, there was no clue as to who did it or why.” Miroku said. “We have not crossed paths with anyone who holds a grudge against any of us.”

 

“There was no scent around.” Shippo said and lowered his head. “She's really sad.”

 

“Well I guess I have some news for you all. It may cheer her up.” Sesshomaru said. “I searched for the woman Kaede while you were gone. The nearby villages didn't really have many leads but there was a woman about a day away that had an elderly miko named Kaede. Whether or not she knows Kagome I do not know but it may be something you'd want to check out.”

 

“Thanks.” Inuyasha said. He pushed his plate away and stood. “I'm going to see how Kagome is.”

 

“When she is troubled he is troubled. His emotions get the best of him.” Sesshomaru said. “He is indeed like our father.”

 

“Is he now?” Miroku asked curiously.

 

“They both had an infatuation with a human at some point. From what I remember Kagome has been his love interest since they first met. I believe her scent has a strong hold on him. It is pleasant even for a human.” Sesshomaru said.

 

“Coming from you I guess that's a compliment.” Sango said.

 

“Emotions serve me no purpose nor do compliments.” Sesshomaru said.

 

“Yet you've clearly expressed some feelings towards your mate and brother.” Miroku said.

 

“Half brother. Family is a different story. Displaying emotions reveal weaknesses. Something a lord cannot afford to show his enemies. There are many youkai who wish to claim my lands.”

 

“I'd think so. The Western Lands are the most beautiful that I've seen in all my travels.” Sango smiled.

 

“I've finished my meal. If you'll excuse me, I have other matters to attend to. Don't hesitate to ask for anything you may need. Your rooms were left as they were.” Sesshomaru said as he stood up to leave.

 

“Arigato for your hospitality Sesshomaru-sama.” Sango said before he left.

 

Sesshomaru nodded and shut the door. “Hmm Kaede in another village.” Miroku said. “An elderly one at that. She may be who we're looking for.”

 

“It seems to fit but we can't be too hopeful can we? Kagome may not be ready to leave yet.” Sango said. “Mourning over family is never an easy thing to get over, especially to someone in her position.”

 

“Ah yes, she is in a very complicated situation, but if she is as I think she'll quickly bounce back to her old self soon. She's not one to dwell in the past and stay disheartened for long.” Miroku said.

 

“I hope your right Houshi-sama.” Sango drank from her glass.

 

“I hope she gets better soon. I'm tired of Inuyasha telling me to go somewhere else.” Shippo huffed.

 

“I'm sure she won't mind if you're around Shippo.” Sango laughed.

Inuyasha walked into their room and found Kagome leaning against the wall with tears in her eyes. She wasn't sniffling just silently crying. Inuyasha walked over and picked her up to carry her to the bed. Sitting in the position she was couldn't be good for her back. She didn't need any more problems.

 

Inuyasha sat on the bed and held her. She clutched his haori and buried her face into his chest. He rubbed her back in a soothing motion waiting for her tears to stop. “Gomen, I can't stop crying.” Kagome sniffled.

 

“Don't apologize.” Inuyasha said. “You have every reason to cry.”

 

“I don't want to cry anymore. I want things to go back as they were.” Kagome said. “I didn't even get to tell Okaa-san that I was thankful for her being my mother after she found me. That I was glad that she cared for me.”

 

“I'm sure she knows.” Inuyasha said. “She wouldn't want you to mourn over her or Souta. She'd want you to be your usual self.”

 

“Okaa-san and Souta would probably want me to be happy.” Kagome wiped the tears from her cheeks. “Arigato Inuyasha. I'm glad you're with me.” She said as she hugged him.

 

“Keh, who else could take my place?” Inuyasha returned the hug and then sighed. “Come in brat I know your there.”

 

The door slowly opened and Shippo poked his head in. “Okaa-san are you alright?” He asked.

 

“I'm fine Shippo.” Kagome turned around and held her arms out indicating for him to go to her.

 

Shippo smiled happily before shutting the door and bounced into her arms. He cuddled close and stuck his tongue out at Inuyasha when he heard the jealous growl. Inuyasha was the one who was supposed to comfort her and get all the attention. Shippo just barged in and was taking up Kagome's time.

 

“Does this mean I'm like you and your Otou-san?” Shippo asked.

 

“What do you mean Shippo?” Kagome asked.

 

“After you left Sesshomaru said that Inuyasha and his Otou-san were alike because they were both infactuated with humans.” Shippo said.

 

“I think you mean infatuated. I don't think that means the same thing.” Inuyasha folded his arms and looked away.

 

Kagome blushed and glanced at Inuyasha. “What else did you guys talk about after I left?” She asked.

 

“Sesshomaru said he liked your scent. He said it was pleasing for a human.” Shippo said.

 

“He said what?” Inuyasha growled and jumped up.

 

Kagome blushed a darker shade of red as she patted Inuyasha's arm. “I'm sure he didn't mean anything by it.” She said.

 

“That bastard! He has a mate! Better fucking keep his hands off mine!” Inuyasha growled.

 

“Sit.” Kagome said calmly.

 

“What the hell was that for?” Inuyasha growled from the floor.

 

“Watch your language around Shippo.” She said. “He's too young to hear that kind of language.”

 

“He's old enough to know not to repeat it. He's older than he acts you know.” Inuyasha said.

 

“I'm a little kid.” Shippo crossed his arms and stuck his tongue out at Inuyasha.

 

“Oi!” Inuyasha stood up and flicked his nose.

 

Stunned, Shippo just looked at Inuyasha and slowly brought a hand up to his nose. He huffed and bent his head. “Gomen.” He said softly.

 

“What did you do?” Kagome asked.

 

“It's discipline.” Inuyasha stood when the spell wore off and took a seat behind Kagome wrapped his arms around her waist to pull her closer. “He's old enough to know better than that.”

 

“Discipline? Since when are you being mature? You usually just chase him around.” Kagome turned her head to look at him.

 

“I don't know it just came to me.” Inuyasha shrugged his shoulders.

 

“Did you tell her about that Kaede?” Shippo asked.

 

“Kaede? Did you find anything out?” Kagome asked.

 

“Sesshomaru said that he found some lady named Kaede who's elderly.” Inuyasha said. “About a day away he said.”

 

“Can we go?” Kagome asked.

 

“Are you up to it?” Inuyasha asked.

 

“I'm fine now.” She turned her head and smiled. “Arigato.”

 

“Well if the others are up to it we can leave tomorrow.” Inuyasha dipped his head and licked her neck.

 

“Inuyasha!” Kagome blushed and turned to face him.

 

“What?” He asked innocently.

 

“Not in front of Shippo!” Kagome set him down next to her.

 

“Don't do what in front of me?” Shippo asked. He jumped onto Inuyasha's head. “What did you do?”

 

“I just-”

 

“He did nothing!” Kagome grabbed the kitsune off of Inuyasha's head and patted his head. “Come on Shippo let's go and talk to Miroku and Sango!”

 

Inuyasha chuckled and followed after them. Luckily they didn't have to go far. Miroku and Sango were both heading to their rooms the moment they came out of theirs. “Kagome do you feel better?” Sango asked.

 

“I'm fine.” Kagome smiled. “Thanks.”

 

“Did Inuyasha inform you about Kaede?” Miroku asked.

 

“Hai, I was going to ask you if you were ready to go and check it out.” Kagome said.

 

“We're ready when you are.” Sango answered.

 

“We leave first thing tomorrow then. I'll let Sesshomaru know later.” Inuyasha crossed his arms.

 

“Well since you're here Kagome would you like to join me in a bath?” Sango asked.

 

“But Sango I thought this time I'd accompany you.” Miroku said sadly.

 

“Hentai!” Sango slapped him and grabbed Kagome's arm. “Come on Kagome.”

 

“Baka.” Inuyasha shook his head.

 

“I can't restrain myself around such beauty and since Kagome is yours...” Miroku held his hands up in defense when he heard Inuyasha's growl. “I'm joking. Sango is much better!”

 

“Keh, Kagome is better.” Inuyasha said.

 

“What idiotic conversation are you chattering about now?” Sesshomaru asked as he walked up the stairs.

 

“We were arguing about who was better, Sango or Kagome.” Miroku said.

 

“Kagome's better.” Inuyasha crossed his arm.

 

“Can't you spend your time doing more important things than bickering about which woman is better? They're just human.” Sesshomaru said.

 

“Might want to tell that to Rin.” Inuyasha laughed as he pointed behind Sesshomaru.

 

He turned around and saw Rin glaring at him with her arms crossed, her foot tapping the floor. “Just human?” Rin asked. “Did you forget your own mate is human?”

 

Before Sesshomaru could say anything Rin stomped off and slammed the door to their bedroom that could be heard throughout the castle. The door opened once again and Rin stuck her head out. “Since you don't want to be associated with humans you can sleep somewhere else!” She shouted and once again slammed the door.

 

“Not again.” Sesshomaru shook his head.

 

“Again?” Miroku chuckled.

 

“Her mood swings are coming more often.” Sesshomaru sighed. “As much as I want an heir I sometimes think it's not worth it.”

 

“Rin's pregnant?” Inuyasha sniffed the air and found it was true.

 

“You couldn't smell it?” Sesshomaru asked. “Why do you think she hasn't been around lately?”

 

“I'd be careful of what you say. She may be around.” Miroku chuckled.

 

“Oi Sesshomaru before you get scolded again I'm just letting you know we're leaving tomorrow to go see that Kaede woman.” Inuyasha said.

 

“Kagome feeling better already?” Sesshomaru asked. “The village is north from the castle. It's small and you should be able to find it easily. Just ask around. She's the village miko so someone should know who she is.”

 

Sesshomaru left to go undo some of the damage with his mate. With her mood swings she was always in an unpredictable mood.

 

“So want to go listen to the girl's conversation?” Miroku asked.
