Chapter 37

Tetsusaiga's True Form

 

It took some time to get Kagome to stop crying. After she did they went downstairs to get something to eat. It was well after breakfast time but they hadn't eaten since last night. It was unhealthy for them to skip a meal, especially after what they went through. When they reached the dining room everyone but Rin was present.

 

“Kagome!” Sango stood up and ran to her. “Are you okay?”

 

“Hai, I'm fine.” Kagome said. She braced herself for Shippo, she saw him getting ready to jump. She slid back a little bit when he collided into her. “Good morning Shippo.”

 

“Oi runt what did I tell you about that!” Inuyasha growled lightly.

 

Shippo didn't say anything and continued to snuggle into Kagome. “Why is everyone down here?” Kagome asked. She took her usual seat at the table.

 

“We wanted to see how you were. And find out what happened.” Miroku said.

 

“I would like an explanation.” Sesshomaru said.

 

“Some baka youkai jumped through the window of our room just after sundown. He kept attacking and we ended up in the forest, which was his mission. I disposed of him but Naraku showed up.” Inuyasha explained. “We need to be more careful.”

 

“He killed my family.” Kagome said. “Please be careful. I don't want to lose you guys too.”

 

“Kagome...” Inuyasha said softly.

 

“How did you get Naraku away then?” Miroku asked.

 

“Kagome must've tapped into her miko powers. She was surrounded by a blue light and then Naraku's hands were burned.” Inuyasha explained. “He said he underestimated us and that he would be back. All that evil bullshit.”

 

“The room will be fixed within a couple of days.” Sesshomaru said. “I don't think I've ever heard of this Naraku youkai.”

 

“He's been after us for a while apparently.” Sango said.

“There's not one youkai in the Western Lands that I don't know of.” Sesshomaru said with a hint of anger in his voice. “I will find out who he is. One more thing before I leave. Keep the tetsusaiga with you at all times. It may look like a rusted old katana but I assure you it is more. Appearances can be deceiving.”

 

Sesshomaru left making Inuyasha wonder what the hell he was talking about. The tetsusaiga was a rusted piece of crap that would serve no purpose to anyone. He had no choice but to believe him. He'd been right about everything so far. Inuyasha just wished he wasn't so fucking vague with all the information he'd given him.

 

“That bastard gets more and more smug each day.” Inuyasha growled lightly.

 

“You just let him get to you.” Kagome giggled.

 

“Well what shall we do now?” Miroku asked.

 

“We don't know anything about Naraku. He's our biggest threat. We need to deal with him first.” Inuyasha said. “If we have to we'll put off finding our memories.”

 

“I agree. As long as Naraku is out there looking for Kagome then we have to be aware.” Miroku said. “I think we should all start training. My fighting skills aren't what they used to be.”

 

“You're supposed to be a monk.” Sango said.

 

“The world today is a very dangerous place.” Miroku smiled.

 

“Miroku's right. I haven't trained in a long time.” Sango said.

 

“You guys can at least train. I don't know what I could do.” Kagome said sadly.

 

“You don't need to fight.” Inuyasha said. “I'll protect you.”

 

“I'm not going to sit around and do nothing while you guys do all the fighting!” Kagome said. “He's after me. There's no reason you guys should get involved!”

 

“I'm your mate! I'm the one that is supposed to protect you! You can't go fighting alone!” Inuyasha yelled.

 

“Inuyasha's right. He's your mate and he'll stick by you. Besides we're your friends. We are all linked together in this destiny.” Sango said.

 

“Sango is right. We were gathered together for a reason.” Miroku smiled. “You can't stop us from helping you either way.”

 

Kagome smiled and nodded her head. “Thanks everyone.” She said.

 

“Well I'm sure you both are hungry. Sango and I will have the cook bring in your food. We asked her to keep it warm for you.” Miroku said. “We'll be training if you need us.”

 

“Bye!” Sango waved before joining Miroku towards the kitchen.

 

“Quit thinking about it. There's nothing you could think of to get rid of me.” Inuyasha said.

 

“I-I wasn't thinking about anything.” Kagome said. He actually guessed right.

 

“You're a bad liar. I'm your mate remember I know these things.” Inuyasha smirked.

 

Kagome sighed and smiled. “So then what other perks are there since we're mates?” She asked.

 

“Not much. If the feeling is strong enough we'll be able to sense each other when we're in trouble. Not that I'd ever get into anything I couldn't handle.” Inuyasha said.

 

“So full of yourself.” Kagome shook her head.

 

“I've been wondering...You don't regret becoming my mate do you?” Inuyasha asked, afraid of what her answer might be.

 

“Of course not. What made you ask so suddenly?” Kagome wondered.

 

“Well the night of the new moon. You didn't know about it and its not like being mates is something you can go back on. There might be other things about me you don't know, that I don't even know.” Inuyasha explained.

 

“Inuyasha...nothing changes. No matter what.” Kagome smiled in reassurance.

 

“Keh.” Inuyasha turned his head, covering his relieved smile.

“Did anyone else feel that?” Miroku asked.

 

After Kagome and Inuyasha had eaten they joined Miroku and Sango in the training room. They had barely got there when the ground rumbled. “What is it?” Kagome asked as she unconsciously hugged Shippo closer to her for protection.

 

“Youkai.” Inuyasha said after he sniffed the air. “Dammit! Why is it when something bad happens it happens all at once!”

 

They all ran out of the room and outside the castle gates. Sesshomaru was standing there looking out to the forest. His hair was blowing in the slight breeze that had passed. Without turning around he spoke. “I assume you noticed the commotion.”

 

“Hai, we felt the rumble in the ground.” Miroku said. “What is it?”

 

“It's a centipede youkai. A whole fucking family of them.” Inuyasha growled.

 

“They're here.” Sesshomaru said. He flicked his right arm and he held what appeared to be a bright yellow glowing whip.

“Kagome get back!” Inuyasha shouted. Without warning a centipede burst from the ground directly beneath him. He was able to jump out of the way at the last minute. “Shit!”

 

“Watch your tongue Inuyasha.” Sesshomaru said as he jumped out of the way from the youkai's companion.

 

Inuyasha growled as he dodged the centipede's attack. It swung its tail at him and made its way closer to the castle. It screeched loudly as its mate and two fully-grown pack members joined him. They stood tall. Ready to attack at any moment, which was what they did.

 

Sango and Miroku both looked at each other and nodded. Miroku pulled an ofuda out from his sleeve. He threw it forward successfully latching onto one of the centipede youkai. He then held his hands up in front of his face and chanted a spell, leaving the youkai immobile. Sango then took advantage of the moment and threw her hiraikotsu, chopping the youkai in half.

 

This only served to make the youkai angry. They screeched at the loss of their companions and began to swing wildly at anything and everything in the way. Inuyasha saw one of the demons get closer to Kagome and Shippo. He jumped in front of them to shield them, but he didn't know how to block the attack. If he were seriously wounded then he wouldn't be able to protect them.

 

“Use the tetsusaiga.” Sesshomaru said. He stayed in his position merely watching, with his whip still in hand.

 

“Fine!” Inuyasha shouted. He reached for the weapon tied to his hip. He pulled it out of his sheath and held it out in front of him. How he was going to defeat anything with the rusty katana was beyond him.

 

The thoughts flew from his mind. The only thing he needed to worry about was protecting his mate. `Kagome' As soon as her name popped into his thoughts the tetsusaiga...pulsed. It pulsed once more before transforming into a huge blade that took the shape of a fang. At the hilt of the katana was a patch of fur all the way around.

 

“What the fuck?” Inuyasha looked at the katana in his hands. Before his thoughts could roam any further the centipede youkai screeched and moved towards him. He jumped into the air growling and brought the tetsusaiga down on the youkai. It fell to the ground cut in half. Inuyasha landed starting at the tetsusaiga.

 

Sesshomaru then decided it was time to take action. He slowly walked to the remaining youkai and swung the whip wildly, successfully getting rid of the remaining youkai. He flicked his hand and the whip disappeared. “Those who set foot on my castle grounds are shown no mercy.” He said before he began walking back inside the castle.

 

“I didn't know your katana could do that.” Kagome said in amazement.

 

“I was unaware that you had the katana in the first place.” Miroku said. “I've seen you with it but I assumed you were merely carrying it.”

 

“Sesshomaru gave it to me when we first came here.” Inuyasha explained. “I need to get some answer from that vague asshole.”

 

Inuyasha grabbed Kagome's free arm and dragged her inside. Miroku and Sango followed after a cleaning crew for the defeated youkai showed up and began working. They saw Inuyasha round the corner to the meeting room they were in a while ago. They caught up just in time to hear the commotion.

 

“What the hell are you hiding from me now?” Inuyasha growled.

 

“I hide nothing.” Sesshomaru said. He was sitting in the chair as if he were waiting for Inuyasha to follow him.

 

Kagome sat down knowing it would take a while. She patted Shippo's head and smiled. “Sesshomaru-sama, do you know anything about the tetsusaiga?” She asked.

 

“Of course I do. It was left in my care from Otou-san until Inuyasha was old enough to use it.” Sesshomaru said. “I was going to let the baka figure it out himself but seeing as how his intelligence has dulled over the years I'll explain.”

 

“OI!” Inuyasha shouted.

 

“The tetsusaiga was made to protect humans, more for your mother. I assume Otou-san knew his end would come soon and she would need protection. Not very many youkai liked the idea that the ruler of the Western Lands mated with a human woman. It transforms from the rusty appearance to the shape of Otou-san's blade. It's made from one of his fangs, as the tenseiga was.” Sesshomaru explained.

 

“I have a question. We just saw your skills first hand so why didn't you bring the centipede youkai down faster?” Miroku asked.

 

“Well then I would not have seen your battle skills.” Sesshomaru said. “I would've stepped in if things were too hard to handle. I get youkai attacks every so often.”

 

“Anything else I need to know about the tetsusaiga?” Inuyasha asked.

 

“Keep it close to you at all times. Never leave without it. It's the only thing that controls your anger.” Sesshomaru said seriously.

 

“Sesshy!”

 

“If you'll excuse me my mate is in need of attention.” Sesshomaru said. He stood up and left the room without another word.

 

“Vague isn't he?” Miroku said.

 

“That bastard enjoys doing this!” Inuyasha growled.

 

“At least he eventually tells us. I mean imagine how much harder things would be if we hadn't come across him.” Kagome said.

 

“Ah true.” Miroku said.

 

“I think I need a bath.” Sango said.

 

“Me too.” Kagome stood with Shippo still in her arms.

 

“I want to go!” Shippo exclaimed.

 

“How about we al-”

 

“Don't even think about it bouzo.” Inuyasha growled a warning.

 

“Hai, hai.” Miroku soothed the bump on his head.
