Chapter 39
Missing Voice
Inuyasha ran to Sesshomaru's office. He could smell his scent coming from the room. He threw open the door and slammed his hands onto the desk. “Something is wrong with Kagome!” He shouted.
“You have no clue what it may be do you?” Sesshomaru asked.
“No, she just...snapped earlier this morning, then apologized and passed out.” Inuyasha said. “We were going to go to Kaede's village but she's in no condition to travel. I don't know what to do...”
“I'll get someone to help. Go back to your mate.” Sesshomaru stood and walked out of the office.
Inuyasha sprinted back to the room. Sango and Miroku were both in the room with Shippo at Kagome's side. She was sweating and her face was red. “She looks worse.” Inuyasha said. He sat down next to her and grabbed her hand.
“She started breathing heavy earlier but now its better.” Sango said.
Sesshomaru walked into the room with an elderly man. They walked over to the bed. The man checked her heartbeat, forehead, and other numerous things. He finally sighed and stood up. “She's got a fever. I think it may have been caused by stress. The weather hasn't been bad lately so that's the only cause I can think of. Just put a cold cloth on her forehead for a while until she cools down. Let her rest for a day or so. Make sure she doesn't worry herself.”
The elderly man left without another word and without waiting for thanks. “It's just a fever. I'll have someone send some cold water and cloths up.” Sesshomaru said and left.
“At least its just a fever.” Sango sighed. “I thought it might have been something worse.”
“I guess we'll have to wait a while before we go see Kaede-sama.” Miroku sighed. “Well Sango and I will go get some breakfast. Would you like us to bring you some?”
“No.” Inuyasha said.
“I'm hungry.” Shippo said.
“Come with us Shippo. I'm sure Inuyasha wants some time with Kagome and we'll go get something to eat.” Sango said. She picked him up and they all left the room, shutting the door behind them.
A couple minutes later there was a knock at the door. Inuyasha answered it. It was a shy servant woman who handed him the cloth and cold water. He thanked her and walked back inside. He sat next to Kagome and dipped the cloth into the water. He wrung it out and put it on her forehead.
After a while Kagome moaned and opened her eyes. “Inuyasha?” She called for him.
“I'm right here.” Inuyasha grabbed her hand. “Are you feeling okay?”
“Hai, just a little tired and my head hurts. What happened?” She asked. She pulled the cloth off of her forehead and sat up.
“Take it easy. You have a fever. I told you not to worry so much, it's taken its toll on you.” Inuyasha said.
“I guess this means we won't be going to Kaede-sama's village for a while.” Kagome sighed.
“Damn right we're not. We'll go when I'm say your better. Not when you think your better.” Inuyasha crossed his arms, showing there was no room for argument.
“Hai, hai.” Kagome nodded. “Where's Shippo?”
“He's with Sango.”
“I wanted to apologize.” Kagome started getting out of bed.
“What are you doing? Did I not tell you, you had a fever?” Inuyasha pushed her back into bed.
“But-”
“I'll get him. Just stay in bed!” Inuyasha stood up and left the room. He sniffed around for Shippo and found him in the dining room with Sango.
“Is Kagome awake?” Sango asked.
Inuyasha nodded. “Oi, runt your mother is calling for you.” He said.
“Is she okay?” Sango asked.
“Yeah.” Inuyasha said.
Shippo jumped out of the chair and into Inuyasha's arms. As soon as they left the room Shippo broke the silence. “I didn't mean to call you `Oyaji'.” He apologized.
“I know.” Inuyasha smiled.
They both walked into the room and Shippo immediately jumped into the bed and into Kagome's open arms. “I'm sorry Shippo. I just had a bad dream and it scared me.” She hugged him.
“I'm sorry we woke you.” Shippo said. He smiled now that everything was okay.
“It's alright.” Kagome smiled. “Did you eat?”
“Hai, Sango took me to get something!” Shippo smiled. “Are you hungry? The doctor said you were sick.”
“I'm fine. Thanks for worrying.” Kagome smiled and hugged him again. “Inuyasha's in a bad mood so be nice to him ok?”
“Hai! I already apologized for calling him Oyaji.” Shippo said.
“I'm not in a bad mood.” Inuyasha looked at her.
“Sure...” Kagome shook her head.
“You need to eat something. It'll help you get better faster. The faster you get better the faster you can go see Kaede.” Inuyasha said.
“If it will make you feel better.” Kagome sighed.

Later that night, just before sunrise. Kagome awoke to a strange sound. She opened her eyes and looked in front of her. Shippo and Inuyasha were sleeping next to her, which was strange because they both had excellent hearing. So how could she hear something when they couldn't? Suddenly in front of her floating just before her eyes was what looked like a little tiger, but instead of its original color it looked like a red flame.
She sat up reaching her hand towards the little tiger. Before she touched it, it bit her but instead of feeling pain she felt warmth. Before she could say anything the tiger grew in size and then dropped onto the bed. Inuyasha and Shippo felt the sudden weight and opened their eyes. Shippo just stared at the tiger in awe.
“What the fuck is that?” Inuyasha immediately sat up and pulled Kagome back towards him.
The tiger jumped out of the window but instead of breaking it, it went right through it. “What the hell happened?” Inuyasha asked Kagome.
Kagome opened her mouth to answer but no sound came out. She grabbed her throat and tried speaking again. Her voice was lost. She turned to Inuyasha and pointed to her throat. “You can't speak?” Inuyasha asked. She nodded. “What the fuck was that thing? Stay here and don't leave this room.”
Kagome turned to stop him but he was already out of the window. `Stay in the room.' Like she was going to listen. She pulled the blanket off of her and stood. “Okaa-san?” Shippo called out. She turned to him, smiled and picked him up. She stepped out into the hallway to go outside.
“Kagome?”
She had only reached the stairs when the voice called out to her. She turned around to See Sesshomaru. She opened her mouth to say something only to remember that she couldn't speak. Instead Shippo spoke for her. “Okaa-san can't talk.” He said.
“Can't talk? Well why are you wandering around at this time? Where is that idiotic brother of mine?” Sesshomaru asked hoping for some hint of an answer.
“He ran outside from the window to chase after the youkai thing. He said to stay there but Okaa-san left anyway.” Shippo explained.
“A youkai?” Sesshomaru said. He hadn't sensed anything. “I guess as stubborn as you are, you won't listen to that baka. Well I shall accompany you to find him. At least then he won't be as furious that you didn't listen to him.”
Kagome smiled in thanks and followed him outside. Before she stepped out outside she set Shippo on the ground and gave him a stern look. Shippo understood and sat down near the door with his arms crossed and a disappointed look on his face. He watched as they left.
Sesshomaru sniffed the air trying to catch Inuyasha's scent. He finally caught it and followed the scent. He hadn't gotten very far. Inuyasha was waiting for them, sitting on a fallen log, looking a little angry. “What the hell are you doing here?” Inuyasha asked the both of them.
Kagome of course couldn't answer but she folded her arms and looked at him sternly. Her body language was enough to let him know how she felt about that question. Sesshomaru resisted the urge to give a little smirk at her attitude and kept his face unemotional. It was very amusing, their relationship. Many times he had to resist the urge to chuckle or smirk.
“You should know that she wasn't going to just sit back and wait for you. I on the other hand ran into her on the way out. Shippo explained what happened and I decided to accompany her. With that scowl on your face I assume you lost the mysterious youkai?” Sesshomaru asked.
“Keh. I didn't even sense the damn thing come in or smell it.” Inuyasha growled slightly. He stood up and walked over to Kagome. “Did anything else happen? Are you hurt?”
Kagome shook her head and smiled in reassurance. She made a gesture of writing and pointed in the direction of the castle. “Good idea. I believe she can write down what happened once we return. I will meet you there back in the study.” Sesshomaru said and took off in a run.
“You can never listen to a damn thing I say can you?” Inuyasha asked her before picking her up bridal style. Kagome just smiled and tweaked his ear in response.
They finally reached the castle and found Shippo waiting where he was, they then headed for the study. As he said Sesshomaru was waiting with paper and something to write with. He was sitting at his desk waiting for them. He pointed to the seat in front of the paper. “It took you long enough.” He said to Inuyasha.
Inuyasha just growled in response waiting for Kagome to finish writing. Now was not the time to argue with Sesshomaru as much as he may want to. Once she was finished him and Sesshomaru read what she had written and sat back. “I see.” Sesshomaru said.
“I can't believe you didn't wake me!” Inuyasha yelled.
Kagome rolled her eyes and sat back in the chair. Now she had to worry about how she was going to get her voice back. Inuyasha grabbed her hand. “I may know of a youkai that could steal people's voices. They are very rare and don't usually take voices without a motive. They must've taken a liking to your voice.” Sesshomaru explained.
“So then how do we get her voice back?” Inuyasha asked.
“The one who stole your voice will come back. I don't know when but unless the youkai gives her, her voice back you'll have to defeat them.” Sesshomaru explained.
“Fuck! She could be without her voice for who knows how long!” Inuyasha yelled.
“Patience is a virtue Inuyasha.” Sesshomaru replied, a hint of amusement in his voice.
Inuyasha growled before standing up and pulling Kagome along with him. She barely had time to make sure she had a good hold of Shippo before he dragged her out of the office to their room. He slammed the door and dragged Kagome to the bed. He laid down dragging her with him against his chest. Shippo fell to the side of them and curled up to go to sleep.
“Don't worry. We'll get your voice back somehow.” Inuyasha reassured her.
Kagome nodded and grasped his hand.

Sorry it took so long for this chapter to get out. A little bit of writer's block. I've been writing other fics to try and help the writer's block, which I guess it helped somewhat...well on certain fics anyway. I have no idea where I got the idea of her losing her voice. I was reading and it just popped in my head. Well hope you like it. Let me know what you think!
Thanks to readers and reviewers!
