Chapter 42
Clearer Memories

Three days have passed and Inuyasha was still ignoring Kagome. She knew he was close by but she hadn't seen him at all. She never imagined that it would be this bad or that she would miss him so much. Finally she got tired of waiting for him and went into the forest to find him.

Before she could get too far she heard growling. It didn't sound like Inuyasha. She turned around to see a wolf staring straight at her, teeth bared, growling loudly. She slowly backed up but the wolf stalked her step for step. Not being able to see behind her she tripped over a small hole and fell to the ground.

The wolf took advantage of the fall and ran towards her, but before it could reach her Inuyasha had jumped in front of her and kicked it a few feet away. Inuyasha picked her up and jumped onto a branch of the nearest tree. He checked her foot to see if there was any damage from when she fell, but there was none.

“You don't think before you act do you?” Inuyasha sighed.

“I guess not.” Kagome said. Then realized that Inuyasha was there. She threw her arms around him in a hug. “Inuyasha!”

“Who'd you think it was?” Inuyasha asked as he hugged her back.

“I thought you were still mad at me.” She said.

“I am still mad at you!” Inuyasha yelled. “You left by yourself with no protection whatsoever! It doesn't matter how safe you think your going to be! Anything could've happened!”

“I'm sorry.” Kagome said. Inuyasha was taken aback. She usually didn't back down so easily. “I didn't think and I'm sorry.”

“You'd better be! Don't ever do anything like that again!” Inuyasha yelled once more.

“Hai.” Kagome lowered her head. “Nothing happened though...”

Inuyasha leaned forward and nipped her neck. Kagome gasped and put a hand to where he bit her. “I told you, I don't want to hear any of your excuses.” Inuyasha said strictly. “It's bad enough I backed out on the silence.”

“What?” Kagome asked.

“I wasn't going to show myself until later but you decided to go into the forest unprotected.” Inuyasha said.

“I can't help it. I don't want to have to be escorted everywhere I go. I don't like being defenseless. That's why I came here.” Kagome explained. “Besides that dream has been bugging me.”

“You dreamed it again?” Inuyasha asked.

“No, but it just bothers me.” Kagome said.

“Quit thinking about it. Did you at least ask Kaede what you needed?” Inuyasha asked.

“Not everything.” Kagome said.

“You've been here for three days and you didn't ask her?” Inuyasha asked.

“Well I was worried about you.” Kagome said. “I know it was only three days but I missed you...”

Inuyasha leaned forward and gently kissed her. “I missed you to but you have to listen to me!” He said with a light growl.

“Hai.” Kagome said in a small voice. “Does that mean you'll come back with me?”

“I guess. I mean it! You're not going by yourself anywhere!” Inuyasha scolded. “I'm your fucking mate you don't need to be running away from me!”

“I wasn't ru-” Kagome began but was once again quieted when Inuyasha nipped at her neck.

“No excuses. It's too late for anything now.” Inuyasha said. He suddenly jumped down to the ground causing Kagome to scream.

“I hate it when you do that!” Kagome shouted. “Every time! I'm not getting in any more trees!”

“Your lucky you got off your punishment easily!” Inuyasha nipped her neck once again.

“Will you stop that!” Kagome grabbed her neck.

“No.” Inuyasha smirked and walked into the hut.

“Ah Inuyasha how have you been these past few days?” Miroku asked as Inuyasha and Kagome sat down.

“Fine.” Inuyasha replied.

“Where were you?” Kaede asked.

“Around. Someone needs to learn to take care of herself.” Inuyasha glared at Kagome.

“Inuyasha is right.” Miroku said. “You have no way of protecting yourself unless one of us is with you.”

“That's what I don't like.” Kagome sighed.

“Well let's not dwell on that and have some dinner.” Kaede said and began giving out food.

-------------------

“This...is not good.” Kagome said as she looked down at the ground.

“What? You've been up in trees before.” Inuyasha said.

“I know but I said earlier that I wasn't going to go in anymore trees.” Kagome pinched his thigh. “No thanks to you! I'm up in a tree again!”

“No one forced you.” Inuyasha shrugged.

“You did! All I did was walk out of the hut and you grabbed me!” Kagome shouted.

“We've been apart for three days. I'd like to spend some time with you alone. Since Miroku and Sango can't climb trees this is the best place to be.” Inuyasha said. “You can suffer in a tree for a while.”

“I don't think I'm going to like it. We'll end up sleeping here and then in the morning you'll jump to the ground without warning again and I'll scream again.” Kagome sighed. “You have the upper hand right now.”

“Fine, we'll sleep on the ground then.” Inuyasha suddenly jumped to the ground without warning.

“Well you'd think for someone who was pinned to a tree you'd hate being in them.” Kagome said once she settled herself after the scream.

“Like I care.” Inuyasha sat against the base of the tree. He pulled Kagome against him, wrapping his arms securely around her.

“You don't remember anything? Nothing about how you got pinned to the tree?” Kagome asked.

“Nope, nothing.” Inuyasha said. After a couple of seconds a flash appeared before them.

~~~MEMORY~~~
“Inuyasha watch out!” A young Kagome shouted.
“Just run baka!” Inuyasha yelled as he dodged another arrow.
He heard a scream and looked behind him. As soon as he turned around an arrow pierced his chest. He flew back against a tree. His vision became blurry and all he could see was a figure of a girl wearing miko robes with long black hair tied back with a white ribbon. She had a bow an arrow in her hand.
“Inuyasha!” Kagome shouted as she ran up to him. She began to pull on the arrow. A blue light surrounded the arrow when Kagome began to pull on it.
“Run baka!” Inuyasha used what little strength he had to swing her away. An arrow just barely missed her hitting the tree an inch away from Inuyasha's upper thigh. If Kagome were still where she was, she would've been hit in her right shoulder blade.
“Inuyasha!” Kagome cried. Tears began pouring from her eyes.
“I'll be right behind you! Get out of here before she hits you!” Inuyasha yelled. “Run!”
Kagome took one last look at him before doing what he said. He would be right behind her. He'd have to be. Kagome took off in a run changing directions constantly to avoid the arrows being shot at her. She finally lost the lady and stopped to catch her breath. As soon as she could catch her breath she sensed something behind her. She turned around in time to see Naraku smirking at her.
“All alone now little miko?” He asked.
“No, Inuyasha's behind me.” Kagome said.
“I think not. He's bound to the tree. Only a miko can release the arrow that seals him there. Too bad you won't live long enough to help him.” Naraku chuckled.
Kagome quickly turned around and began to run. Before she could get too far there was a blast not two feet behind her. The force of the blast caused her to fly forward.
~~~~END~~~~

Kagome snapped out of the memory with tears in her eyes. So that's how it all happened. She sat up to wipe the tears from her eyes and then wrapped her arms around Inuyasha. “I can't believe it happened that way.” She cried.

“It's alright.” Inuyasha rubbed her back soothingly. “It's over now.”

“I can't believe Naraku is that twisted.” Kagome buried her face in his chest. “Who was that lady?”

“I don't know. My vision was blurry. I could only tell she was female. She looked young though.” Inuyasha said. “I wonder where Miroku and Sango were. In the first memory we had he attacked us as a group first.”

“They must've gotten away.” Kagome said. “They had to have, they're here now.”

“We know the battle was somewhere around your village, the one where your mother found you. Somewhere near a river.” Inuyasha said. “Miroku was washed up on the shore of his village. Sango too.”

“We should probably head over to your village. If your okay with that.” Inuyasha said.

“I'm fine with it. Why wouldn't I be?” Kagome asked.

“Your family...” Inuyasha said.

“Oh, I'll be fine, really.” Kagome assured him.

“We need to talk to Sango and Miroku. See if they saw what we did. Or if they had a memory themselves.” Inuyasha said and stood up with Kagome.

They walked to the hut and found Miroku and Sango sitting against the hut wall. Miroku had his arm around Sango. “Did something happen?” Kagome asked.

“A memory.” Miroku said. “It took a lot out of us. Did you see a memory as well?”

“Hai, it actually made me really tired.” Kagome sank to the floor. She was trying to hide it.

“Damn it! Why don't you say these things?” Inuyasha growled lightly.

“You know why.” Kagome said. “What did you guys see?”

“Apparently we were separated when Naraku attacked us. It was just us two and Kirara near the river when a blast came from behind us. I assume we landed in the river.” Miroku explained. “What did you see?”

Inuyasha explained what they saw in their memory. “I see.” Miroku said. “That still doesn't give us much.”

“We know Naraku is our enemy. The female in the miko robes too. I don't know who it is and Kagome doesn't recognize her.” Inuyasha folded his arms. “Where's the old lady?”

“Inuyasha!” Kagome hit his chest.

“She's staying with one of the villagers. She's due for a baby and she's staying in their hut just in case.” Sango said.

“We should get some sleep then. These memories are becoming stronger each time we see them.” Miroku said.

“Miroku's right.” Inuyasha said. “We'll figure out what to do in the morning.”

Miroku and Sango laid down on the futons that were set up for them. “There's an extra futon in the corner.” Sango said before lying down.

Inuyasha grabbed the futon and laid it out. He motioned for Kagome to lie down. “What happened to sleeping in trees?” Kagome asked.

“Your tired and this is more comfortable for you.” Inuyasha said.

“What about you?” Kagome asked as she pulled the blanket around her.

“Don't worry about me just go to sleep.” Inuyasha said.

“Hai.” Kagome yawned. “Oyasumi nasai.”

Inuyasha leaned against the wall for a while making sure there were no threats around. When he thought it was safe enough to sleep he laid down on the futon next to Kagome and wrapped his arms around her.
