Chapter 43
Red Mystery
The next morning everyone awoke and found Kagome leaning against the wall with her legs up and her head leaning on her legs. Her hair covered her face but everyone could tell she'd been crying. She even got up passed Inuyasha who was sleeping next to her on the floor. Even his sensitive hearing wasn't enough to hear her get up. Her movements couldn't be felt either.
For a while now they had been trying to console her or figure out what made her suddenly be like this. She wouldn't say a word or move a muscle. She just sat with her head down. Everyone just sat around her trying to think of something that would get a reaction out of the upset miko.
Finally Inuyasha couldn't take it. He grabbed her shoulders and gently shook her. “What's wrong?” He asked.
“Inuyasha, I don't think that's the best way to get her to speak.” Miroku said.
Kagome finally lifted her head with puffy red eyes and looked at Inuyasha. “I'm sorry.” She said quietly.
“I stand corrected.” Miroku said.
“Sorry for what?” Inuyasha asked glaring at Miroku for his stupid comment.
“I had a dream about the memory we had yesterday.” Kagome looked at the ceiling. “It felt so real. Like it was happening again.”
“It's alright.” Inuyasha pulled her into his embrace. “It's over and we're all fine now.”
“Inuyasha is right. We are all together again.” Miroku said.
“What will we do now?” Kagome asked. “We can't live in peace with Naraku out there. And now we may have to worry about the woman.”
“It seems to work well when we retrace our steps from our memories. Maybe we should find out where the battle was held and go there.” Miroku suggested.
“It has to be close to Kagome's village and a river. Her mother found her there and you two were washed up on your villages in a river.” Inuyasha said. “Are there any rivers near your hut?”
“Hai, there was one not too far from the village. It was in the forest. No one went there though. No one was supposed to go into the forest.” Kagome explained.
“It would make sense. You were attacked in the forest. The villagers must've thought it wasn't safe for anyone to go in afterwards.” Miroku said.
“Are you going to be alright? Going back so soon?” Sango asked.
“Hai, I'll be fine. The sooner this is over with the sooner we can go on with our lives.” Kagome said.
“The next thing to figure out is when do we leave?” Sango asked.
“I think tomorrow would be best. We can rest for today and leave at sunrise.” Miroku said.
“We'll wait until tomorrow then.” Inuyasha said.
“I'll start cooking breakfast then.” Sango stood up.
“I'll help.” Kagome began to sit up.
“You just rest.” Sango smiled. “I can make breakfast.”
“I'll go get some firewood.” Miroku stood up and left the hut.
“Are you sure? I can help.” Kagome offered once more.
“No, its fine. I'm just going to reheat what we ate for dinner last night.” Sango sat down near the fire to start it.
“What about Sesshomaru? Should we tell him where we're going?” Kagome asked.
“We can stop by the castle before we head to the village.” Inuyasha said. “We have to get more supplies anyway. We'll just head there tomorrow morning.”
“Hai.” Kagome said.
-----------------------------
The group ended up at the castle very early the day after. Sesshomaru was already outside the gate when they arrived. “What are you doing out here?” Inuyasha asked. He doubted it was to welcome them.
“Something's coming.” Sesshomaru replied and looked in the direction of the forest.
Suddenly the ground rumbled and through the forest came a bunch of youkai bats. They looked like regular bats but much larger. They were the size of humans with an even bigger wingspan. They all hovered around the group and then from the forest came a youkai that looked human.
The youkai had pointed ears. He had a long face with three green streaks on his cheeks and another streak above his left eye. He had short black spiky hair and dark green eyes. He was wearing a white sleeveless haori with forest green pants. He was tall and had a flute in his hand.
“And who are you to intrude on my land?” Sesshomaru asked.
“I am here for Sesshomaru and a miko who holds a precious jewel.” The youkai said. “I am Ryu.”
“Many youkai have come for my status and have failed. Your fate will be like theirs.” Sesshomaru said. “The miko will give no jewel to the likes of you.”
“We shall see.” Ryu smiled. “I have control over these youkai bats. I'm sure they will defeat you.”
Ryu then lifted the flute to his lips. As soon as he started playing the bats started to dive towards the group. Sesshomaru took out his whip and began slashing at the oncoming bats. Inuyasha pushed Kagome towards the ground and yelled for her to take cover before standing up and pulling out the tetsusaiga.
Kagome could only watch from the ground as everyone but her started to fight. She could do nothing and she had never felt so helpless before in her life. Before she could dwell on it any longer she felt pain in her back and she was suddenly lifted into the air. One of the bats had dug its claws into her kimono, scratching her back and was now carrying her away.
“INUYASHA!” She screamed. There was nothing else she could do.
Inuyasha growled violently before jumping onto the castle wall and slashed the bat with the tetsusaiga. The bat screeched and dropped Kagome but not before knocking the tetsusaiga somewhere out of Inuyasha's reach. He ignored his weapon and reached out for Kagome trying to grab her but couldn't quite reach.
She didn't hit the ground. Another bat swooped down close and grabbed her again, causing more scratches for her. Before the bat could get any further something wrapped around its neck jerking it backwards, making the girl fall out of its grasp. Instead of falling on the ground or into another one of the bat's grasp she fell into Sesshomaru's arms.
“Thank you Sesshomaru!” Kagome said before ducking.
“Just stay next to me.” Sesshomaru said and turned his attention back to the bats in the sky above them.
Inuyasha landed on the ground just in time to see Sesshomaru catch Kagome. She was now ducking, hands over her head behind Sesshomaru. He was relieved that she was safe but angry that she was put in danger in the first place. He now turned his attention to one of the bats that were trying to get to her. He felt incredible anger before seeing red.
Sesshomaru stopped fighting, as did everyone else when they noticed a shift in the air. Recognizing the scent Sesshomaru looked at Inuyasha. His assumption was right. His usually hanyou half brother was now a full youkai. Everyone noticed that he turned towards Inuyasha and also looked.
“Inuyasha?” Kagome said as she took a step forward. The Inuyasha she was looking at was different now. Sesshomaru stopped her movements by putting his arm in front of her.
The full youkai Inuyasha that stood before everyone had longer fangs, claws, and red eyes instead of his usual amber eye color. On his face was a purple jagged streak on each side of his face on the cheek. He stood menacingly, growling loudly. For a moment he looked confused and looked down at his claws, flexing his hands but then looked at the youkai with the flute in his hands. He too, stared at Inuyasha in awe. He'd never heard of the half demon being able to turn full demon.
Without wasting another second Inuyasha dashed to the youkai passing everyone else. He ran in such a speed that no one had realized the youkai was defeated until they heard his shout of agony. They looked behind them at the youkai and saw Inuyasha's hand through the youkai's stomach all the way up to his elbow. All of the bats that had hovered in the air were now gone, fleeing now that their master was gone. He dropped him and turned towards his companions.
“Inuyasha?” Kagome said again.
Inuyasha's head jerked in her direction and he sniffed the air. “Be careful. He's full demon now.” Sesshomaru warned. “Don't threaten him or he will attack.”
“But it's Inuyasha!” Kagome shouted.
“It doesn't matter. His demon blood craves bloodshed and won't until he returns to normal. Since you're his mate I don't know what his reaction will be now.” Sesshomaru stated. “If he charges stand back and I'll take care of it.”
“No, he doesn't need to fight! He's probably got wounds too!” Kagome defended him.
“He doesn't feel pain. Only the need to kill.” Sesshomaru said. “Without the tetsusaiga he can't return to normal.”
“But-” Kagome began but was cut off when Inuyasha growled violently. The only thing she could think of doing was to utter the word he hated so much. “Sit!”
Inuyasha hit the ground face first. As soon as the spell wore off he quickly jumped up. “What the fuck was that for?” He growled as he shook his fist.
“Inuyasha!” Kagome said happy that he was back to normal. She ran to him and jumped in his arms.
Inuyasha was confused but closed his arms to embrace her only to make her cry out in pain. She sank to the ground on her knees holding herself waiting for the pain to pass. He was so confused he didn't realize he could smell her blood. He was also confused about what happened but that could wait until later. He picked her up, careful not to hurt her again and headed for the castle.
“Inuyasha.” Sesshomaru said and waited for Inuyasha to stop and look at him. “Once your done taking care of each other's wounds we'll all need to talk.”
Inuyasha nodded and continued for the castle. “I'm confused.” Miroku said shaking his head.
“Me too.” Sango said and looked at Inuyasha and Kagome disappear into the castle.
“I'll explain later. Attend to your wounds. I need to find the tetsusaiga.” Sesshomaru said and headed in the direction he saw it fall in.
“Alright.” Miroku said and walked with Sango into the castle. He, of course offered to carry her but she refused to accept his help. He shook his head and followed her.

Sorry this chapter was short. I'm leaving on vacation on Wednesday for two weeks so I probably won't be able to update until after that. I wanted to get this chapter out before and thought this was a good stopping place. Hope you like it! Let me know what you think!
