Before He Bites
Her head ached and the Shikon was speaking softly to her, as if to reassure her. But the voice didn’t make the pain hurt any less. Its voice did, though, lull her into a numb world where fog covered the rocky ground and where a figure stood off into the distance. Kagome placed a hand to her forehead, trying to feel the scrape that Hayate had landed to her. Blood didn’t run along her cheeks any longer, and as Kagome lifted a hand to her chest, she no longer felt broken ribs.
She had certainly thought that Hayate had chosen not to be overcome by Shikon Hunger, she thought for sure he would turn out to be pure of heart. But now, she finally saw how easily it was for demons to want that power. And she knew that InuYasha was coming after her, she didn’t know if it was for the fact that she had gone against him or because he too had been overcome with lust for the Shikon.
The voice of the Shikon spoke softly once more, trying to get her gaze back to the figure. Looking up she felt her gaze waver then steady on the now approaching figure. The figure came into view, the fog separated. She saw dark, midnight hair and eyes so translucent that they were almost clear. White robes flowed around the women, and plump lips lifted in a gentle smile.
“Protectoress, we now meet.” Kagome finally was able to put the voice of the Shikon to a face. A face so familiar Kagome had to look more closely before clarity came to her. The face reminded her of her own. The same small nose, lips, and almond shaped eyes.
“Hai…but whe-where am I exactly?” Her voice turned prim. The woman’s eyes lit with amusement. She let out a laugh full of humor.
“You are in the Jewel.” Kagome felt her eyes widened and looked around her once more. The setting around her neither disturbed or comforted her. It felt…neutral.
“How is that possible?” Her inquisitive nature wanted her to cut straight to the point. She watched the woman in front of her bend down, her back curving as she sat on a rock behind her, one Kagome didn’t realize was even there.
“We will get to that soon, but first I will introduce myself.” Kagome looked at the woman waiting for her to continue and felt an ancient aura settle over both of them, centering around the strange woman. “I am Midoriko, the Priestess of the Shikon Jewel: The Jewel of Four Souls.”
Kagome made her expression remain impassive, giving no hint of the surprise underneath the surface. Midoriko turned her gaze to Kagome, and she felt a sliver of sadness in her heart.
“Why are you here?”
“Kagome…we both know that you know of the Shikon.” Kagome nodded her head and folded her arms over her chest. She felt the fabric on her arms for the first time, and it felt heavy. The normal clothing she wore, the ones that she had on with the fight with Hayate were replaced with the white, square shirts and red pants of the traditional Miko.
“Hai…I know of the Shikon.” Her voice wavered and she lifted her chin in determination, wanting to know why she was here. “The question is Midoriko, why am I with you in the Shikon?”
“You were always one to get straight to the point, eh? Hai, we are in the Shikon, but your soul is the one that decided to come here, I did not force you.”
Kagome’s eyes brow slanted upward, and she grumbled underneath her breath, something she never did before meeting InuYasha. She titled her head questionably, and Midoriko answered:
“During your fight with the youkai Hayate, you experienced a demonic power of your Hanyou, InuYasha. Has he got closer, both of your souls were confused, so in that confusion, and with the pain of your fighting with the youkai, your soul decided to keep you safe…here in the Shikon.”
The world twisted in the horizon and Kagome’s feelings turned worried. She glanced over to Midoriko, and the women did not looked worried at all. The twisted horizon took on a familiar shape, as red and white started to bleed into the twisted mass. A face started to come through, as did the shape of a person. Golden eyes, bleak and dull, looked on and roamed over to them. The triangular face of InuYasha took shape, as did the howl that came from his mouth. Those dull golden eyes bled red as they locked onto Kagome, and the horizon settled behind his lone figure.
“Kagome!” His voice rang out, and Kagome’s head snapped towards Midoriko.
“What is he doing here?” Her question was hurried and her gaze glanced sharply back towards the enraged hanyou.
“His soul is connected to yours, he followed you here Protectoress, he is still your Protector. And in the end you will need him so that you can enter the Cave.”
