InuYasha Fan Fiction ❯ Betrayal's Gift ❯ Chapter 17

[ Y - Young Adult: Not suitable for readers under 16 ]

A/N: Thank you animelover4ever for you review. I am so sorry that it took me forever to post the story. I am truly and deeply sorry. With two kids and a full time job of taking care of them, sometimes my personal time gets cut in half, and when I have a moment to sit down I am usually watching anime. = ^ __^ =

I had just finish watching steel angel Kurumi, I liked the first season better. Second season sucked except for the part where her master is now a girl and the funny things that happens to her, but other than that, second season was a bust. So, if anyone is going to watch Kurumi, just watched the first season.

Well, enjoy and please review I enjoy reading them, when I get reviews it also helps me to post faster as well, when I see nothing, I think people aren't reading it so I watch anime's and take my time. So, animelover4ever this is for you.

Warning: Talk of abortion, so if this offends you skip that part, another thing good people get hurt everyday remember that! I'll leave you to find out what that means.

Bwah hahaha bwaha haha

Hotaru had gone back home to get more supplies after spending a week in the village the fall season was ending fast and the cold was fierce for a girl who was used to central heat and air. When Hotaru came back through the portal of time it was for her to come face to face with magnificent white snow. Everything was so clean and crisp.

Her soft shoes crunched on the snow as she made a path to the village with her foot steps.

She went to the hut that she shared with the village healer Naoko. She had brought lots of heavy comforters and blankets for the old woman and some for the mothers with very young children. She brought with her some more medications to give out to people who had bad colds or flu.

Hotaru opened the covering of the hut and set the stuff down.

“Good morning Naoko.”

“Ah, good morning child how fare thee?”

Hotaru looked up at the woman sitting by the fire.

“What ales ye child ye look sickly.”

“Oh, it's nothing; I might be coming down with the flu. If I do have it than I plan on staying home for a while til I'm better, I don't wish to infect the entire village with something that may not be common here.”

The older woman looked at her closely.

“What are the symptoms?”

“Huh, oh, well, every morning for this past week I've been throwing up or just plain nausea, I've been achy and tired, but no coughing or sneezing yet.”

Hotaru smiled up at the woman to reassure her but when she looked up she frowned, she wasn't expecting the stern look on the other woman.

“Naoko, what's the matter?”

“Child do ye not know that you are with babe?”

Hotaru gave up an unlady like snort.

“What, no Naoko why I had my cycle just…well let me see…let me pull out my pocket calendar.”

Naoko looked at the girl as she went through her back pack. When Hotaru finally pulled out her calendar she checked the date and than pulled the calendar up to her eyes til they crossed. Than pulled it away from her again and paled.

“No, this can't be…I can't…”

“There there child, it is not so bad. Young women all the time get themselves into trouble just tell the young man and he'll do the honorable thing.”
Hotaru laughed bitterly.

“Naoko, our times are different, that boy is far from honorable. He hurt me against my wishes. I thought he loved me but he lied. Look I have to go back home and really check this out I mean it might just be the flu after all.”

The young girl stood up shakily with fear and anger. She didn't turn around to look at the older woman before she said good bye.
-------------------------------------------------

“Thank you Saori for this information.” Said a husky voice from the center of the room where the fire pit was located.

“My lord, I only tell you because I think she is unfit for you.”

“That is not your decision, I want Hotaru and if she doesn't have me…well, it matters not she will have me.”

The girl Saori who is the healer in training got down on her knees in front of the village headman's son. She was in love with a man who didn't love her and she now felt like a fool.

She was bitterly jealous of the strange priestess Hotaru and she already knew that there was something different about this girl. She wasn't normal by any standards, not after what she saw when the girl was taking a bath.

But when Yuy claimed to make Hotaru is wife she couldn't take it anymore. At first she smiled when Hotaru turned him down but he seemed to become obsessed with her.

Now she just seemed a fool. Even though she told him that she was pregnant and that the other man used her Yuy still wanted the purple eyed, raven headed girl and that left Saori with nothing but contempt for the young priestess.

“She'll deny you again you fool.” She said with spite.

Yuy stood up and smacked her. Saori fell to the floor with shock. Than looked up at him with a trickle of blood running down her chin.

“You…you hit me, but why?”

“Don't you ever call me a fool again wench, I'm Yuy the son of the head village master here, your just a woman know your place.”

With that the young man turned around and left her sight with an evil grin playing at the corners of his slim lipless mouth.

~Flash Back~

He asked Hotaru one more time to be his wife. It was fall and the last leaf fluttered to the ground between them.

“Lady Hotaru, who better to be my bride than you, I'm Yuy the village head master's first son. You and I can build an empire here.”

“I'm sorry Yuy, I'm just not interested. Aren't there any other girls in the village who would make a better wife? I'm not ready to be married yet.”

“I am tired of being turned down Lady Hotaru, I have been lenient with you since you don't understand my power, but, I will not ask you again. This offer is final.”

Hotaru looked up at him, her dark violet orbs bore through him with boredom.

“I am tired of telling you no Yuy. I am not interested. Please find someone else. I don't want to be a wife to anybody.”
At this Yuy became angry and shouted at her.

“You want to waste away with no one to embrace you, no one to give you children. Our children would be great! For the benefit of this village you should marry me and bare my children!”

Hotaru laughed which caused him to frown more. He was really embarrassed because she turned him down once again in front of his two best friends who always had a laugh at his expense.

“You dare to laugh at me woman!?”

Hotaru looked up again and apologized when she saw how upset he was. She had to remind herself that she wasn't in the present day but in Feudal Japan where a woman was beaten for such a show of disrespect.

“I'm sorry Yuy, it's not you really, it's just that where I come from…giggle…well…that sort of talk is just out dated that's all. I meant no harm. I'm going to go now I have some things to do before I go back to my home ok. Bye Yuy.”

Yuy watched her form retreating onto the path that led to the bone eater's well.

“Yuy?” said Waka who was his childhood friend and cousin.

“Shut up Waka, and don't you start in on me Nobi…mark my words she will take me as her husband or die.”

Now Waka his cousin stepped forward and placed a hand on his shoulder but Yuy shoved it off and walked away.

~End Flash Back~

Yuy smiled evilly for the forces of unseen things brought fate to his door. Hotaru was with child and she has no husband. He had her now for she'd have no choice but to marry him. He'll provide for that child because he knew that if he didn't she'd leave to her own place and never return, but if her child were to accidentally die by lets say a youkai well then that was an entirely different story.

He starts to chuckle as he plotted to gain the one thing he desired the most…that purple eyed beauty.
-------------------------------------------------
Hotaru sat on the toilet of her bathroom looking stupidly at the stick in her hand. She then picked up the box and read it again.

One purple line negative
Two purple lines positive

She looked at the stick one more time and though she saw two purple lines she had to believe that she was imagining things.

`I can't be…but…it was just that one time…I didn't…'

Hotaru hung her head and began to cry. After a few moments she picked up her head and decided to make certain that the stick was defected. She grabbed her stuff and went off to the clinic.

She now sat in the office looking at magazines but not really reading them. Her mind was racing with thoughts of having a baby and how would her parents react, how would the kids at school react once she was confronted with them out in public.

Her grandmother at least told the school that she was home schooling now since the incident, but, there were still questions from students who would pop up to the shrine in the pretense of getting good luck charms or other such things.

“Watanabe Naoko” called out the nurse. At first Hotaru didn't know they were calling her since she forgot that she had given them false identification.

“Naoko? Is Naoko still here?”

“Oh, I'm sorry I was lost in thought, here I come.” Hotaru said in a hurry trying to pick up her purse but it kept falling.

She followed the nurse through the double doors into the nurses' station.

“Please stand on the scale.”

Hotaru did just as she was asked. From there she sat on a chair and had her vitals tested, blood pressure was fine, weight was good and then the question came from the nurse as she brought Hotaru to the little examination room.

“So, what is the purpose of your visit today Miss Watanabe?”

Hotaru turned red as she felt the heat rise up to her face.

“I'm here for a pregnancy test. I…I took one at home, but I don't think I did it right.”

The nurse smiled gently and prompted the girl to answer the question to the last time she menstruated.

Hotaru gave her the information, but than let the nurse know that she was going through a lot of stress during that time.

The nurse smiled again and told Hotaru that the doctor would be in shortly. However, it seemed like eons had passed before the doctor finally made her appearance.

“So, Naoko you're here for a pregnancy test?”

“Yes.”

“Well, would you mind answering a couple of questions first?”

“No…no problem.”

“Ok, first when was your last menstrual?”

“Um, about two months ago I can't remember the date exactly.”

“Alright, the second question is how old are you?”

“I'm seventeen.”

“I see. I take it your parents don't know?”

Hotaru was becoming irritated. She didn't come here to be interrogated.

“No they don't know. Look, I've been…well…I had a situation and they know about it ok, if I am pregnant it's a result of that situation.”

The doctor looked at the young girl with a sad frown.

“Were you raped Naoko?”

Hotaru looked away in shame, how many times would she have to relive that dishonor before she could live in peace.

When Hotaru didn't answer her the doctor sighed.

“It's alright you don't have to answer that question, but, I am here to help you and right now you need all the friends you have by your side.”

“I don't have any friends. You want to help me than please tell me that I am not in this condition. Tell me so that I don't have to continue with this nightmare. I want it over. I am tired of trying to escape it but it never lets me go!”

Hotaru balled up her fist and pressed them into her legs. She was not going to cry, no not in front of a total stranger who probably thinks she's a freak too, that she deserves to be in this condition.

“It's ok, well let me go check the urine sample you left us and I will be right back alright? Please relax.”

Hotaru nodded no longer wanting to talk to anyone. Her nerves were shot and when the doctor finally returned to tell her that she was indeed pregnant about two and a half months along, Hotaru began to cry she just couldn't hold it in any longer.

“It's alright dear, it's alright.”
“How can it be alright? I'm pregnant! I've brought dishonor to my family, I've degraded my family name…my parents their in a mess all because of me…and now this!”

The doctor took the young girl by her shoulders and gave her a hug.

“I am here to help you. It's not your fault, you were a victim but, there are choices you have to make. If you don't make them then you will find yourself holding a child in no time at all.”

Hotaru looked up at the woman.

“What are you saying exactly?”

“I'm saying that you can put the baby up for adoption, you can keep the baby because like you it's only a victim of circumstance.”

“Or I could abort?”

“Well, that is really up to you, but that and everything that I told you would have to be brought to your parent's attention. They'll understand, they love you, they would want to help you Naoko.”

Hotaru laughed for how could her parents love her after all that she has done and said to them. How can they love her when she is the only person in the family to have brought shame onto them in the form of a child to a unwed teenage mother.

Hotaru left the clinic in despair. What was she going to do? She walked all the way back home and up to her room. She totally ignored her mother's hello and message that her uncle Souta was visiting.

She looked at herself in the mirror and kept thinking about what she was going to do.

`You can abort it; you don't want to shame the family with this untasteful ordeal do you? I mean really Hotaru, haven't you caused enough drama in this family?'

“Shut up! I can't do that I can't abort this baby, it may be Ken's but…it's innocent like me!”

The evil voice laughed back at her in the reflection.

`Your not innocent Hotaru, humph, you just want to humiliate your family more don't you? You want to make them pay for creating a monster like you. You had no friends, you left yourself open for Ken to take advantage of, you dropped out of school and now your going to bring home a baby? Yeah, I can see your parents jumping for joy. You must really loath them.'

“No, that's not true…”

`Oh, it's not? Don't you hate your mother for nearly purifying you; don't you hate her for being a crazy drug addict who embarrassed you at school? What about your lecherous father? You don't hate him? Didn't you tell him so, didn't you tell them both?'

“But I didn't mean it…honestly…”

`Do you think they believe that?'

Hotaru looked down tears spilling from her eyes. She did tell her parents those things. She is angry with them for making her different from other kids at school. Wasn't it their fault that all this happened, but, then she should have known that Ken was up to something. All the things he told her, that fake argument with Fuu just to trick her, so really it was her fault.

“What should I do then?” Hotaru said looking up at her reflection in defeat. She was truly tired after all, tired of fighting, crying and being alone and now this. The voice within her answered.

`Take a rest for awhile; let me out to handle things.'

“But you'll abort the baby.”

`Hotaru you need to let me take care of you, you'll never have to know what I did ok. Trust me I'm the better half of you, the stronger half…let me out Hotaru. You don't want to cause more shame for your parents do you? They already dislike you enough, you caused them enough problems. Let me out.' Said the alter ego in a smooth dark voice like velvet cake.

All was silent in the room and when Hotaru opened her eyes and looked at herself in the mirror it was no longer the sweet sad eyes of the lonely girl, but the evil malicious glint of her alter ego Hitomi.

Hitomi danced around the room singing that she was free and when she had enough of that she went into thought.

She got on the phone and dialed 411 for the number to an abortion clinic. Once she got it she began making her appointment.

Meanwhile, downstairs Ms. Higurashi sat on the sofa weeping silently. No one was home because her daughter was getting things prepared for Souta's visit and Miroku had been working at the shrine all day with visitors. She had no idea that someone was in the house. All she knew was that her poor grand daughter was pregnant and knew that she had to be upset because of it. Than she wondered how Hotaru's parents were going to take the news, surely they would blame themselves since they blamed themselves for everything lately.

She heard a loud noise upstairs that startled her out of her dark thoughts.

“Hotaru? Are you home?”

She thought it was weird that the girl sounded so happy. She picked up the test that she found in the bathroom waste basket when she was cleaning up the rooms like she usually did and walked upstairs.

“Hotaru? Is that you?”

She stopped in front of the door and was ready to knock when the door flew opened and Hotaru was standing in front of her. She looked a little different, but, than why wouldn't she the girl was pregnant now.

“Hotaru? I found this would you like to talk about it?”

She raised her hand with the test stick and Hotaru looked at it than back at her grandmother.

“Not really, why were you snooping through my shit anyway?”

Ms. Higurashi stood there with shock on her face. `Hotaru why are you acting this way with me?'

The young girl seethed as she pulled the stick from the wrinkled hand.

“Why don't you mind your own damn business?”

“Where are you going Hotaru?”

“No where old lady, move I'm late for something.”

Hotaru began to walk but the old woman blocked her path by staying in front of her.

“Hotaru look at me.”

It was a simple request one that wasn't denied. Hotaru looked at her with contempt in her eyes. They stood there like that for several seconds when Hotaru noticed a revelation in the woman's eyes.

“What is it grandmother?”

“Your…your not Hotaru…who are you?”

Hotaru gave her a dark smile as her amethyst colored eyes sparkled with malice.

“How perspective, you noticed the difference. I guess you're not as stupid and naïve as you look. I'm Hitomi…how did you guess?”

Ms. Higurashi gulped, she felt a strong aura about this girl and fear was wracking her old bones. She grabbed on to the upper stair well rail for support.

“My Hotaru would never talk to me that way, she loves me and I love her.”

Hitomi smirked evilly. “How touching my heart warms with a bubbling feeling.”

“You…you need to bring Hotaru back!” Ms. Higurashi began to mumble some words of a mantra that her father had taught her.

However, Hitomi grabbed the woman by her sweater and pulled her up to her face.

“That spell won't work on me old hag. This is boring and your making me late.”

And with that she shoved the old woman down the stairs and laughed while she slowly walked down.

When she reached the bottom she squatted next to the woman on the floor who was now unconscious, she noticed a little bit of bruising already starting to form on the woman's head and smiled morbidly.

“Well old hag, it's been fun.” She laughed evilly as she began to walk over the woman when she heard a voice in her head. It seemed far away. She squinted as she clutched her head with both hands.

“No Hotaru, you're not getting out now.”

She took long breaths and cleared her mind, once she knew the voice was gone she grabbed her jacket and put on her shoes and headed to the clinic.
-------------------------------------------------
~at the clinic~

Hitomi sat there waiting patiently to be called on. She looked at the other people who were there and relished in the thought that they were suffering.

Some girls were crying in fear while others were crying because they weren't sure what they wanted to do. But, they were all there to do the same thing. Terminate the life of an innocent.

Hitomi didn't care either way. She loved to bring suffering and she had further plans for the rest of civilization. She seemed to be sitting there taking in the nervous energy being given off by the other patients.

Finally her name was called.

“Hotaru Higurashi please come with me.”

“Gladly.”

The nurse looked at the young girl curiously. This one seemed weird and freaked her out. Her aura was pouring off her in waves and she could feel the negative energy flowing from her.

The nurse deposited the girl in the room right away.

“Hey, when do we start this process I don't want to spend my whole day here.”

The nurse looked at Hotaru again puzzled.

“I'm sorry miss, first the doctor is going to tell you about the procedure and make sure that this is something you want to do.”

Hitomi growled and the nurse edged closer to the door.

“I already now what I want to do I am not going to change my mind hurry up and give me the hospital gown and lets get this over with I haven't got all day.”

“I'm sorry miss, but it's the clinic's policies.”

With that she quickly departed and went to get the doctor.

When the doctor came in she studied the chart of the young girl. Then looked up at her. She could see way the nurse was afraid of this girl, there was something about her that was off.

`Hmm, maybe this girl has some mental disability.'

“Hi, I'm doctor Izumi. I have some questions to ask you.”

Hitomi sat in the chair tapping her foot impatiently. The doctor looked at her and thought to continue.

“Do you know what the procedure is?”

“No not really and I don't care I just want it done.”
“Well, it's my job to tell you anyway. First you will listen to the procedure than I will ask you a question. I will let you think about it for twenty-four hours and then if you still feel the same we will schedule the operation any questions?”

“No.”

“Alright then, we shall begin.”

As the doctor was explaining the entire procedure something was creeping back up into Hitomi's head. She got up and started to pace the small room. The doctor looked on quizzically than asked:

“So, Hotaru is this still what you want.”

“Of coarse it is!”

Than she clutched her head with both hands and began to growl. Than big round purple eyes looked at the doctor beseechingly.

“No, don't listen to that it's an innocent baby.”

“Shut up!” Hitomi growled out than looked at the doctor.

“Fucking consciences.” Hitomi said with a sheepish smile and a shrug to her shoulders.

But the pain in Hitomi's head began to grow hot and white light started hit her like a migraine hard behind the eyes.

`I can't let you do that, didn't you hear what she said, that's horrible.' Hotaru voiced out.

“I thought we both agreed to let me take care of you?!”

`No, not like this…not like this…give me back my body now.'

They fought internally while the doctor took some notes as she looked on. Finally the body of Hotaru stood still and her hands had fallen to her sides.

“I'm sorry doctor; I know what this looks like. I'm getting treated. Ever since I was physically assaulted I've been acting weird…I don't want to have an abortion. I don't know what I want to do yet, but, I can't do this I'm sorry I wasted your time.”
-------------------------------------------------
Hotaru went back home wanting to go back down the well. She couldn't wait to get back to the village where she felt more like herself. This was the first time that she had let her voice take control and the moment she did she witnessed the evil that lay within her.

Before going to the well house she saw a note stating that her parents had gone to the hospital that her grandmother fell down the stairs. Hotaru rushed out of the house feeling really scared for her grandmother's condition.

Hotaru flew through the hospital doors and asked for the directions to Ms. Higurashi's room. The nurse explained that she was on the third floor in room 345a.

When she found the room she noticed that her parents and her uncle were sitting on the little chairs that were provided.

“Hotaru where have you been?”

“I…I went out…momma what happened?”
Kagome turned tearful brown eyes onto her daughter, her hair was distraught and she was so pale.

“Momma fell down the stairs. I came home with your uncle from the grocery and I saw her at the bottom of the steps. Your father was already calling an ambulance.”

Souta came and put his arms around his big sister when she couldn't finish the sentence.

“She bruised her head really bad and at her age the doctors are worried about her concussion. They're not saying anything to us yet and so we have to wait. Their running some test. Momma also broke her leg and arm from the fall.”

Hotaru gasped as fat tears welled up in her eyes. She looked over to her grandmother and saw her father gently pushing some of her hair from her now gray looking face.

Hotaru went up to her and clutched her creased hand into her warm smooth one.

“I'm sorry grandma.” Hotaru whispered so softly. However, it didn't go unnoticed by Miroku.

“Hotaru would you come with me please. Leave your mom and uncle in here with her alone for a moment.”

Hotaru nodded her head yes solemnly and with her head down followed her father out.

“Thank you I needed a bit of fresh air.” He said this as they went out side to the side of the hospital.

They were alone and Hotaru looked at her father.

“I don't understand what happened? How did she fall?”

He looked at her. Than folded his hands together as he sat on the bench provided to them. They sat quietly for awhile before Miroku opened his eyes and looking up at the moving white clouds asked:

“What did you mean when you told your grandmother that you were sorry Hotaru?”

She gasped momentarily and than looked down. She honestly couldn't remember.

“I don't know, I guess I'm just sorry that she hurts and that she is suffering.”

She looked at her father unsure of where he was going. She saw his profile and noted that even though he was in his middle years, he was still strikingly handsome, then the memory of him in the alley filtered through her mind.

“Daddy?”

“Hmm.”

“Why…why were you there…with that woman?”

He closed his eyes, he knew the question was going to come and honestly what answer could he give her? Without looking at her he had to come clean with it.

“I really don't have a straight answer to give you Hotaru other than I was very foolish. In my youth I had traversed with many women asking them to bare my child. I was cursed back then by a nasty half demon. I had only so long to live before he took my life away if I didn't take his first. Honestly, it was good that he enjoyed toying with people's lives for it lengthened mine.

Anyway, sweetheart, I've lost someone who I had honestly loved with my whole soul and vowed to stay true to her if I survived, yet she didn't. Your mother well she filled that void, but somehow I stupidly believed that she didn't love me. We had both made mistakes. Why was I with that woman or any other woman for that matter…”

Hotaru was looking at him; this was the most he has ever revealed of himself and his past. Her eyes were now big and sorrowful she continued to look at him holding her breath waiting for him to continue.

“The only thing I can say is that I am a big idiot and your mother should have let me to rot where I was.”

Than he looked at his daughter with eyes so much like his own.

“But, if she did, I would have never had the chance to look upon a child as lovely and as beautiful as you.”

Hotaru just sat there for she didn't know what to make of his revelation. But anger still welled up inside her. Than she thought about what he had said and than thought about her mother. He thought that her mom didn't love him, so it must have been her mother's fault that he was running around. Hotaru than got mad thinking about all the times that her mother was gone from the world because of her drug addiction.

`No wonder he sought comfort elsewhere.'

The anger now for her mother evolved so much that she sobbed into her father's robes. He cradled his daughter and relished in her feel. He thought he would never feel his baby girl in his arms again. When they let go he wiped away his own tears.

He sighed and looked at her again.

`Hopefully, what I have to ask her won't make her distance herself from me again.'

“Hotaru sweet heart, can I ask you a question now?”

Hesitantly Hotaru nodded her head.
Miroku pulled out of a pocket hidden in his robes the stick that he pried out of Ms. Higurashi's hand. When Hotaru saw it she paled, her large lavender eyes seemed to swallow her head as her mouth set a straight line. Terrified eyes looked up at another pair of lavender that showed his worry.

“Where…where did you get that?”

“I took it from your grandmother when I saw her at the bottom of the steps…she said your name before passing out again…Hotaru sweetheart, are you?”

Hotaru began to cry. She cried hard and tried to run away from her father but he grabbed her wrist and pulled her into an embrace within his strong arms and hard chest. He soothed her back and head and cooed some words to her to calm her nerves. When she began to hiccup he let her go and they continued to have a seat on the bench.

“I'm sorry daddy, really I am, I didn't mean too…”

“It's not your fault, the blame lies with me. I should've been there to make sure that the bastard who did this did not have the opportunity. I should've been chasing him away I should have done so many things…baby I'm sorry.”

Hotaru looked at him bewildered, not for a moment did she think that he would blame himself and it made her feel worse than anger filled her heart again.

“Does mom know?”

“No, not yet, it took your mother a lot of effort not to take that damn drug when she saw her mother at the bottom of the stairwell. If I told her now, I'm afraid that she'd be back in the hospital.”

“I'm sorry daddy. But it's not your fault…it's mom's if she wasn't doing drugs…than you wouldn't have…and I wouldn't be…I would have a normal life!”

Miroku became worried and shook his head in the negative at his daughter.

“It's not like that Hotaru…”

“Don't stick up for her, everyone knows it's her fault, she let you down and she let me down.”

“Hotaru don't speak about your mother that way.” Miroku said with heat in his voice than he continued.

“You'll not disrespect your mother.”

“No that's your job right?”

She stood up abruptly, getting ready to leave his presence

“Sweetheart, where you going?”

“I have to go…I'll be gone for a few days…I…I need some time to think about all this. If grandma wakes up please tell her I'll be back and please daddy tell her…tell her I'm sorry, she'll understand.”

With that she went running off tears falling from her face unchecked.

“Wait Hotaru!”

But it was too late she already was out of earshot. He sighed and looked up into the clouds and prayed.
