Chapter two: Secrets Revealed

Kagome let out a sigh as she turned over to look at the clock. She was grateful that Sango had thought of her and had brought by something to sleep in. Yawning, Kagome noted that it was 5:30. "I knew I shouldn't have went to sleep so early" she grumbled, scolding herself for not succeeding in staying up until at least 9:00.
She tried urging herself back into slumber before she rendered it useless. Sighing, Kagome threw the comfortable blankets off of herself and wiped the sleep from her eyes. She yawned and stretched her arms into the air as she sat up. The bathroom was beginning to look rather tempting as she sat there, unwilling to move from the comfortable warmth of the mattress.
"Grr!" She stomped angrily into the room she desperately wished didn't exist.
'I wonder how I'm going to get out of here?' Kagome sighed, peeking into the hallway. She didn't see anyone, might as well check the place out. "Kagome?"
“Damn.”
"Hey, Sango." She waited for the girl to catch up to her.
"I don't think Yash wants you out of your room." Sango said suspiciously.
"Oh. um. I was hungry." Kagome mentally applauded herself with her lie.
"I'll bring something up." Sango replied, understanding yet unwavering at her orders. "Besides, you don't want to run around in nothing but your shorts and that tank top," she said lightheartedly, thinking of Miroku. Sighing, Kagome nodded and slipped silently back into her room.
"Here you go." Sango gently shoved the door open and carried a tray to Kagome's bed, where she was seated.
"Thanks."
"No problem" To Kagome, Sango looked tired, but she passed it off as her not being the best morning person.
"Has anybody gotten a hold of Houjo or Souta?" Kagome asked hopefully.
Sango just negatively shook her head, "We've been busy." Was all she said. "Oh, Kagome, I don't know what you'll do to keep yourself company during the day, but we do most of our work at night and are usually sleeping when,” Sango paused, searching for a word, “normal people are awake. I just thought I'd mention it so you don't disturb anyone, although that should be near impossible anyway." Sango seemed to be thinking out loud more now.
"Why is that?"
"Hm? Oh, the walls are very well insulated. Not much can get by them." Kagome only nodded and began to pick at her breakfast. "So I'll be going now, okay? If you need anything just pick up the receiver and dial ‘1.’" She pointed near the post of the bed and Kagome looked carefully, noting the telephone that had gone unnoticed before.
"Okay, I probably won't though."
"Lunch will be brought up." Sango looked thoughtful, "Oh! And here!" She left the room, only to return a moment later with some clothing in her hand, "This will do for today; more ensembles will be brought up so you have them all here. Just place the ones you are wearing into the hamper in the bathroom and they'll be taken care of." After receiving Kagome's nod Sango left the room, closing the door behind her.
“A bath seems nice, maybe I can think of something in there.” She slipped off the bed without finishing her breakfast; she never honestly ate the meal. She turned the knob and plugged the drain, slipping to the closet to investigate the various bath salts and bubbles.
'Bubbles might not be the best idea.' she thought, wanting to soak without being distracted by the dissipating foam. 'I'll stick with the salts- this one.' She selected a jar of bath salts that contained a floral scent.
Kagome successfully managed to wash her hair and body without jarring herself. Sighing, she soaked her skin in the scented water a while longer before deciding she would rather try to find something else to engage her attention. She unplugged the drain and stood up, reaching out for a towel. Upon completely drying herself and wrapping her hair, Kagome began to sort through the outfits Sango had brought.
It was an outfit consisting of a simple pair of distressed jeans, which had a large hole in the knee, and a snug black tank top that she chose. She dried her hair thoroughly with the towel. Sighing, she decided she would do something with her mane.
'Hmm.' she contemplated as she examined herself in the mirror again, trying best to decide on a style that would suite her. Sighing in exasperation, Kagome found that it would suffice to leave it down, seeing as she had no products or accessories.
Kagome decided to browse her room out of boredom. She found a candle on the desk and lit it. After leafing through the stationary on the desk, she decided to examine the walls for any pictures before she found a door that had been overlooked in her confusion yesterday. It was partially concealed by a large decorative quilt, which she hastily moved.
The door was narrow and eerie looking. She supposed she wasn't supposed to find it when she opened it to reveal a long dank hallway. It reminded her so much of the room she was first placed in she let by an involuntary shiver. She thanked the gods that she had decided to keep that candle with her.
"Kagome?" She heard from behind, muffled slightly, yet still rather clear. It was Sango in her room. Turning around slowly, she found she had closed the door. She walked faster, hoping to come to some sort of exit. She walked quite a bit through the curving hallway before she came to a door that caught her attention.
It seemed to be the smallest and most hidden door, which is why she was baffled to why it caught her wondering eye so. She blew out the candle and set it on the floor. She then slowly edged the door open, keeping as quiet as best she could. The room that the creaky door revealed was designed much like her own, although it was very different.
The carpet was blood red and the walls were a silvery white. The bed was shaped much like the one in her room, also, although the drapes were black and the rest of the bed was obstructed from view due to their closing. The lamps that graced the two night stands on either side of the bed held sheer scarves over them, both red, to keep the light to a minimum. Kagome lightly stepped onto the red carpet and closed the door behind her before padding into a dark corner.
"The girl is not in her room." A voice came over the intercom and she nearly screamed. To make sure she didn't give her position away Kagome placed her palm firmly over her mouth, stifling any sounds she may have made. When the intercom turned off with an audible click she allowed herself to relax.
When curiosity got the better of her Kagome stepped across the floor, noting the red carpet with a picture of a large white dog, and stopped just inches from the closed off bed. She held her breath, straining her ears for the sound of breathing. When she heard no such noise she nearly panicked and reached a shaky hand out to pull back the curtains. For what seemed like eons to Kagome, she stood there, unsure of what to do.
Taking a deep breath she pulled the curtain over with an audible swish and nearly screamed at what she saw: absolutely nothing. The covers were rumpled and the pillows indented, indicating clearly that someone had been in that bed not long before. If the bed was empty then where was the-
"Miss Higarashi." She froze with her breath caught in her throat and her heart forgetting its duties to pound. She tried to force herself to turn around, finding it to be useless. She was caught, maybe dead. "What are you doing out of your bed?" It was nearly a hiss in her ear and the hairs on the back of her neck bristled from the breath. She absently wandered how the person behind her had made it from where they were moments before to having their mouth inches from her ear. On a subconscious level she wanted to snap at them for scolding her like a child, though her common sense told her better.
"You were told to stay there. But what I'm really curious about is how you managed to find the door." The voice was less menacing, though barely, and caught on a tone of actual curiosity. When she felt her heart had calmed down enough she took a deep breath and slowly turned around. What she saw nearly made her scream, though she stifled it down to a sharp gasp.
Inu Yasha was standing gravely over her, a dangerous glint in his eyes. "I, I," Kagome stammered, begging her voice to calm down and let words come out, but to no avail.
Smirking, Inu Yasha grabbed her wrist with force, dragging her around the room to a button near his bed. "Get Sango and Miroku in here." He barked after pushing the button. Minutes later the two requested came into the room, Sango nearly falling when she saw Kagome. "The girl seems to want to adventure during the day so she'll stay here during that time. She's not to leave until I do, and then she is only allowed in her room. Understand?" The two nodded; their expressions were unreadable. "Tell everybody she's been found and explain to them her schedule." Again they nodded and made their way to the door.
"Feh. Wench, you're too much trouble." Inu Yasha murmured.
"Yash?" Sango paused before leaving. "Do you want her lunch and dinner brought here, then?" He looked thoughtful.
"Lunch, yes. For dinner she can wait until night; she'll do fine." Nodding Sango opened the door and left, giving Kagome an apologetic glance before leaving. "Well then, wench." He closed his eyes and took a deep breath. "I suppose get into bed." She nearly fell upon hearing this. "What?" She asked meekly, barely able to breathe.
"Get into bed." He stated more clearly, "I'm tired, and you seem to want to go roving around the place every chance you get." He saw she was going to speak in protest before cutting her off, "I know about earlier." He said simply, getting exasperated. "So get into bed." She looked at the floor for a moment.
"Well?" He asked impatiently.
She looked up, unsure of herself, "I've nothing else to wear." She said, shifting her weight under his gaze.
"Oi." He sighed and got up, making his way to his wardrobe. Kagome stood dumbly, watching him as he rummaged through the clothing, finally deciding on one good enough. "Here." He threw her a very large T-shirt. She caught it and looked at it, her eyes widening at the thought of wearing only that piece of cloth in the presence of another.
He patiently turned around and she nervously changed, pulling it down nervously when she finished. It wasn't terribly short, reaching to between five and seven inches above her knees, though it was still rather short to be wearing with somebody she barely knew. To bed. "I'm done." She said quietly, turning away from his gaze.
Inu Yasha had seen her worried look over the shirt. He had gotten the largest one he owned, and he just was too tired to call someone to get her something to wear. When he had heard her voiced finish he turned around slowly, mostly from fatigue. "Oi, just put your clothes in the hamper in the bathroom." He watched her nod and make her way to the bathroom; he watched every muscle in her leg flex as she walked that short distance. Shaking his head, as if to clear it, he made his way to the bed.
When Kagome returned from the bathroom she had nearly fainted from the blush that was tinting her cheeks upon noticing for the first time Inu Yasha's state of dress. He was wearing a pair of sweat pants, which wouldn’t have been so indecent if he hadn’t looked so sexy in them. She shifted uncomfortably and made her way to the bed, stifling a shiver as she slowly sat on the opposite side of the bed as he, pulling the covers instinctively around herself.
Inu Yasha gave Kagome an inquisitive look as she neared him and her scent of embarrassment grew. The look went unnoticed, however, as she refused to look him in the face. He frowned when smell of her nervousness laced slight fear as it reached his nose when she sat on the bed. Was he really that big of a monster? Shaking his head, he too burrowed himself into the covers, lying on his back with the covers drawn only to his waste. He placed his hands behind his head as he stared at the ceiling, lost in his own thoughts of why this girl made him feel so... funny.
"Inu Yasha?" Kagome whispered, turning from her side onto her back.
"Hm?" She took a deep breath to douse her nerves as she turned towards him.
"You never did tell me what you were." She said uncertainly, not daring to raise her voice above a whisper. Inu Yasha turned towards her, broken out of his reverie. He took a deep breath through his nose and smelled nervousness and uncertainty overtop her natural scent. When he sensed no fear he spoke.
"It's confusing." She propped herself up and rested her head on her hand, bent elbow on the pillow.
"I catch onto things quickly, try me." She gave a small reassuring smile.
"Look, this probably isn't-"
"Oh, come on! You've forced me to stay in here, it's the least you could do!" His face remained drawn into thought, "Please?" Inu Yasha sighed before he too turned towards her and propped his head on his hand.
"My mother was mortal, and my father was" Kagome cocked her head, "I guess he's what you would call a 'vampire'." He snorted. Kagome sat a moment, drawing lazy circles on the comforter.
"So, you mean he drank people's...” she paused, forcing the word out, “blood?" She gulped.
"Something like that."
"Oh. Does that mean.? I mean, do you.?"
"No. I don't do humans. Especially now a days." He noticed she seemed to relax at this.
"So, you're serious, aren't you? Vampires really exist."
"Yeah, but not exactly how you picture them."
"Then how?"
"Oi. It's nearly seven o'clock and I'm tired. I'll explain when I wake up, okay?"
"Okay." She lay on her back and stared at the ceiling. She felt Inu Yasha do the same. "Inu Yasha?"
"What?"
She smiled at the exasperation in his voice, "Good night." She smiled into the darkness.
"Good night, Kagome. Go to sleep now." She nodded and closed her eyes at the sudden feeling of being extremely tired. She would have been furious if she knew it was induced, and this made Inu Yasha smile.
"Hey, wake up. You've slept all day." Her eyes fluttered open before closing again. "Come on. You've got to eat something." Inu Yasha frowned; he hadn't put that much energy into making her sleep, so why did it effect her so?
"Yeah, yeah, I'm up." She grumbled, wiping sleep from her eyes. "What time is it?"
"It's ten o'clock."
"At night!" she screeched, sitting up quickly.
"Yes!" Inu Yasha flattened his ears to his head in protection from the sudden noise.
"Why in the seven hells did I sleep until ten o'clock, Inu Yasha?" she asked accusingly.
"Because I made you, now get up."
Kagome narrowed her eyes. "Fine, but you have to answer my questions now."
"I know, get up."
"Here." He tossed her a ball of cloth. She shook it out and found it was a black tank top and shorts.
She picked at the cloth,"Inu Yasha?"
"What?"
"Whe- never mind. Could you turn around?" Inu Yasha snorted and did as she asked. Kagome quickly changed into the outfit, "Okay, I'm finished." She walked over to the bathroom and placed the T-shirt in the hamper.
"Now. About that whole topic you so carefully avoided last night." Kagome made her way to the bed and began making it. Inu Yasha gave her a strange look.
"What do you want to know?"
"Everything!" Kagome laughed.
"Even I don't know everything, wench."
"Hey, like I told you; it's Kagome!" She rolled her eyes and presumed smoothing the covers out.
"Fine, then I'll just ask questions. How are real vampires different from what we oh so lowly mortals see them as?" She pulled the curtains back securely.
"Well, for one thing we don't go around calling ourselves vampires. We're called children of the night; well that's what its been translated to." He sat at the chair in his desk, "We age a lot slower than humans and we need blood, though only a few times a month; and it suffices to use animal.
“Oi, now for the hard part. Okay; when the world was still pretty new and there were still very few animals and humans the forces-that-be seemed to think all these living things needed a counterbalance; something to keep their numbers down as they were growing so quickly."
He looked to Kagome who had shifted to lying on the bed, "There were two. One was the loveliest thing you would ever see. She had long ebony hair that flowed behind her when she walked and blue eyes of midnight. Her skin was the creamiest color and she was told to be small but strong. The man was designed to be her contrast; it's said he, like many qualities male "children" now possess, had white hair because he would be the protector; he needed to be fearless even in the night. His eyes were the color of the tree sap and glowed with inner warmth. The creation of these new beings brought about the forging of the shikon-no-tama;" As the powers-that-be had in mind, these two creatures fell in love. They went to have children that went to have children, and so on. Well, these two went on to fight a large battle when one of their offspring decided they needed to prove more powerful by creating human children; or converting humans into one of us. The two were against it and claimed that some children would use these humans as no less than slaves. Eventually the children began to choose sides and then the fighting began. In desperate measures the mother, who had a great love for humanity, decided the powers that be had made a mistake in creating their race.
"She was also sent to be guide of the jewel, which began the great turning point for us. The mother planned to use the jewel to destroy the race, though she found she couldn't do it. She was, after all, a mother. She then used the jewel to cancel out the ability to make human children. After she used the jewel, it consumed her. She and the jewel disappeared and nobody knows what happened. Well, that is until nearly a century later. One girl was being." He stopped to look at Kagome, "consumed,” once again he paused to judge her reaction-a wrinkle of the nose, “at a small farm. It was said her blood tasted the very best and she began glowing. The predator sensed a lot of power coming from a certain spot on her body and ripped into it." Kagome absently rubbed her side, granting in an odd look from Inu Yasha. "You okay?"
"Just finish the story." She said quickly.
"Oi, you don't gotta be that way.
"Any way, when he did that he found a jewel. It was the legendary shiko no tama, and he automatically took it to whoever it was he was leeching off of. This guy happened to be the infamous Naraku."
"Who-"
"No good. Any way, Naraku was one of the guys in favor of making human children; I think he was the one who planted it into everybody's minds. He used the jewel to make a wish. He wished that they would be able to create human children. Well, the jewel went poof again and of course the girl died. Through a lot of trial and error they figured out the jewel found a loophole to the wish. The only way they could make human children was if they had a special quality. Some sort of spirit thing; they 'called' to be turned after they were bitten. Their energy still lingers and it sends some sort of message type thing to the childe's mind. Only humans with strong wills who wouldn’t be easily dominated would be turned.
"It was later confirmed the girl was the reincarnation of the mother. They began to appear every once in a while; each one with a birthmark on their left side." He smelled fear grow into Kagome's scent, "What is it?"
"N- nothing. Just finish, please." He eyed her before continuing.
"Well, inside these reincarnations was the jewel. The hard part was finding these incarnations. The only person who got to use the jewel found that one. Usually the girl was finished being fed from by one of the people who were "watchers of the jewel" and it was their duties to burn the jewel and the body. Only if she was fed from, though- and usually they had to protect her during her life- if they could find her. It's said the girl with the jewel is back now, but mostly it's just said by power hungry Olde ones."
"Olde ones?"
"Yeah, they're the ones that were born before the human children were created. My father was one." Kagome shifted to sit on the bed.
"Wow. So, what's with the ears- I mean. they're like a dog's." Inu Yasha looked at her.
"Some of the strongest and oldest children were given the power to change their forms; my father's was that of a dog." Kagome nodded.
"That makes sense."
"Now, I've answered some questions and I've got to get a hold of your brother. Dinner's waiting for you in your room. You'll go this way, and no more using that passageway. I'll have more questions for you later." Kagome nodded and was led out of the room. Her eyes widened to how close their rooms were. "I'll be by later with those questions. No more wondering around, wench. I mean it."
Kagome padded back to her room across the hall and three doors away. She stopped at her door and turned around to glance at Inu Yasha’s door. Shaking her head, Kagome wondered why Inu Yasha had such an effect on her. “He doesn’t,” Kagome decided, “he’s just something new and exotic and I’m getting cold feet about Houjo. I really love him. Don’t I?” Kagome worried her lip. “You’ve got to stop these thoughts, girl! Of course you do. Just wait for him.” She exhaled deeply as she shook her head in confusion.

He watched her nod and make her way to the bathroom; he watched every muscle in her leg flex as she walked that short distance.
