Chapter 4: I Love You Kagome, Can You Ever Forgive Me?
When Inuyasha awoke the fresh scent of the forest surrounded him, and the feel of the dirt below him was more comforting than he could have ever imagined. He clutched his hands against the dirt, feeling the coolness against his skin, and for the first time in what seemed like ages, a smile was on his face. The forest was his home and there was nothing more comforting than the smell and feel of it around him.
Sliding his pained eyes open, he was nearly blinded by the glare of the sun. Being trapped in that dark room blindfolded made his eyes very sensitive to the light, and he shielded them as he stood slowly up.
The sun was sitting high in the sky, and the sound of the life of the forest around Inuyasha brought even further comfort to him. He turned to look behind him, and saw an ominous castle that was set behind him. As he focused further on the castle, he watched as the sight of it began to fade before him until there was no trace of it. He sighed deeply and turned back to face forward.
The birds chirped happily around him, and he closed his eyes once more to enjoy the freedom he felt. The cool wind breeze was licking his face, and causing a low rustling sound in the trees.
He had almost forgotten completely about his purpose for being to set free, when a low rumbling voice from a nearby tree caused him to snap back into reality.
“I see you are awake Inuyasha.”
The voice was the same as that horrible man, but this thing did not look the same as him. It had a white fur cowl coving the majority of its body, and what appeared to be a baboon-like(1) hood that covered his face.
“I sure hope you have not forgotten our agreement Inuyasha,” the voice murmured, “I did not take mercy on you without reason. You are to bring me the girl called Kagome.”
Inuyasha gritted his teeth slightly. Something from his memories told him that killing this thing in the tree before him would not do anything but anger the man. He would have to wait for his opportunity for a strike at another point.
“How am I supposed to find h–“ A sharp pain in his chest caused him to stop his sentence midway and fall to one knee clutching his heart.
“Don’t play me for a fool Inuyasha. I’ve placed a corrupt shard of the Shikon no Tama directly into your heart. Should you fail to complete my task, I will kill you instantly. We both know you can track that human with her scent.”
Her scent. Inuyasha could barely recall what Kagome smelled like. He would not have an easy time finding her again.
“You have until sundown tomorrow to have her for me. Should you fail you know what is already at stake,” the figure faded into the shadows of the forest. A fading whisper echoed into Inuyasha’s ear, “If you tell the others about this agreement, I will kill them all…”
Inuyasha sighed deeply, and raised his nose to the air. He spent several seconds scanning the surrounding area until suddenly Kagome’s powerful scent flooded his mind. As he let her smell wash over his body, he felt every muscle in his body relax, and his mind was cleared of all doubt and worry as a vision of her smiling at him overtook his senses. The slight tinge of pain that still ached in his chest reminded him to get moving.
He reluctantly looked at the spot where the castle has been before, noting its location for further reference, then jumped into the trees and headed towards Kagome.

After what seemed like an eternity of travel, Inuyasha landed in a tree near a clearing. Night had set sometime during his journey. He perched himself strategically on a branch where he could observe the area without being seen. There was a small fire burning nearly the middle of the clearing, and he saw three humanoid figures hunched over the fire, and beside them two smaller figures. The smaller of the humanoid figure sat apart from the others, its head buried in its arms. Inuyasha could smell tears. There was a low conversation that was occurring between the group and Inuyasha strained to hear what they were saying.
“… and I am sure that he is fine,” said a male voice, “We know Inuyasha is much tougher than a human is. It would be irrational to think he would have died from such an injury.” The tone of his voice failed to convey his confidence in his words.
Inuyasha could make out the slight sobs of the distanced figure. “I-I never got to tell h-him though…” the voice said. Inuyasha knew for a fact that this voice was that of Kagome, and his heart warmed to hear it.
Kagome shifted uncomfortably, “He was j-just so insensitive all the time. He w-would never have admitted it to m-me even if he did feel the same about me.”
In pained Inuyasha to listen to her say the words she was. He couldn’t remember why he never told her how he felt before. The way his body was reacting to just the thought of her, he knew that he could not have mistaken this love for anything else.
Kagome spoke again, “I-I love him…”
Inuyasha could feel the tears streaming down his face before he even realized he was crying. How could he tell Kagome that he was giving her to another man when not only did he love her, but she loved him? He growled angrily and punched the trunk of the tree.
“What was that?” he heard one of the voices say, realizing he had made more noise than he had originally intended. He quickly ducked behind the tree out of view.
Kagome’s soft voice came clear, “I may be crazy but it sounded like Inuyasha…” he could hear the hint of hope coming from her voice. He couldn’t let her see him, not like this. But as he turned to make an escape, two words that he hated rung out through the forest.
“Sit Boy”
Inuyasha fell from sixty feet up in the tree and face planted into the hard dirt, grumbling softly. A squeal of delight turned his attention to the group coming towards him.
“Inuyasha!” cheered Kagome as the small party followed closely behind him. She tackled him on the ground and hugged him tightly, the tears still streaming down her streaked face.
“Oww! Why did you have to go and do that Kagome?” Inuyasha whined.
Kagome’s words turned from happiness to annoyance, “Where the hell have you been? You had me so scared Inuyasha! I thought you were captured by Naraku, or worse!”
Naraku! Now things were coming back together in his mind. Naraku was the name of the man that had captured him.
“Inuyasha are you all right?” she asked. Inuyasha could not look into her eyes, because he knew that he was going to have to betray her love to save her life. He only hoped she would understand why he had to do what he did.
“I love you Kagome, can you ever forgive me?”
Kagome looked startled and confused by his words. He bit his lip, and scooped her up before jumping back into the trees away from the other group members. He ignored their cries that followed him as he jumped from tree to tree.
“Inuyasha?” she looked up at him, a bright and caring smile across her face. He could tell she was searching for his eyes, but he couldn’t look into hers. “I love you too.”
A single tear rolled down Inuyasha’s face.
